NAUMKEAG DIRECTORY for SALEM, BEVERLY, DANVERS, MARBLEHEAD, PEABODY, ESSEX, AND IPSWICH, MASSACHUSETTS. Containing a List of the Inhabitants and Business Firms of the District and Other Matters of General and Local Interest. Published by the Henry M. Meek Publishing Co., SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS, 1905. Original hardcovers, printed paper covered boards and cloth covered spine, spine printed in gilt, 6x9.5 inches, thick volume, 1489 pages, including lots of pages of cool ads, many illustrated, including a great ad on the rear pastedown for WITCH CITY BOTTLING WORKS. A later directory contained a fold open map, there is NO map in this directory, it is either lacking or was never bound with a map. This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. There is a shelving number on the spine, and Sutro Library ink stamps and some associated library stamps and marks here and there throughout. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books originally collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until, in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home at SFSU the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it is just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time. CONDITION: The covers are worn, the spine covering has a shelving label and is pulled with small tears at its ends, the boards are worn through at the edges and corners, and the boards are rubbed, scraped and have some toning and soiling; nonetheless the covers are original and are doing their job. Internally, the front and rear hinges are cracked but holding, there are Sutro library stamps and marks as noted above, the ink stamp of "ADDRESSING CO. OF N.Y." is stamped on the top margin of a number of pages, the title page of the directory, following 16 pages of ads, is worn, scraped and has some closed tape repairs at its gutter edge, the text block is split at a few places where the book was over opened but always remains well bound, there are some small tears, chips and marks here and there, and the pages are all lightly toned, otherwise a complete and solid copy with printing that is bright and clear. Did I mention that the ads are really cool? An Original SALEM & VICINITY City Directory from 1905. A treasure trove of Witch Town Genealogy. About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned): ******The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S. Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.****** INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This book is heavy and will require substantial additional shipping charges.
