1912 BENNINGTON, VERMONT, CITY DIRECTORY w/ Every RESIDENT & BUSINESS + Fold Open MAP

1912 BENNINGTON, VERMONT, CITY DIRECTORY.

Compiled and Published by H.A. Manning Co., Springfield, Massachusetts, 1912. This is an Original, Vintage Directory.

Rebound in Sutro Library hardcovers with black title and shelving info on the spine, the complete original volume is bound within including all the various sections and advertising pages, 5.5x9 inches, 238 pages. The fold-open MAP is bound-in facing the title page, it opens up to 18x24 inches..

Contains numerous advertisements of the day, including a large yellow page section at the front that includes many illustrated ads. The ads really take one back in time.

This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. There is a Sutro Library bookplate on the front pastedown, and Sutro and related library ink stamps, labels and marks on the front endpapers and here and there. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it is just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time.

GOOD CONDITION: The rebound hard covers are solid and doing their job well. Internally there are Sutro and related library labels, marks and stamps as noted above, one page of ads at the front appears to be lacking, the first page of ads has some tape repair, there are some red and blue line marks by and through a few of the names but even those names are clearly legible, otherwise the inner pages are tight, bright, clean, and clear. The MAP has several small holes where the folds intersect, and there is creasing to the upper and lower front corner area, but it remains solid, bright and clean, and it folds open well. A solid, nice, presentable copy with map.

A COMPLETE, ORIGINAL 1912 DIRECTORY of BENNINGTON, VERMONT. A treasure trove of genealogical information.

About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned):

******The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S.

Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.******
