Two complete books from the Second Folio Edition of the Bishops' Bible. A handsome, large printing. Includes a map on verso of leaf cv, captioned: "The description of the holy lande, conteyning the places mentioned in the foure Euangelistes, with other places about the sea costes - wherein may be seene the wayes and iourneyes of Christe and his Apostles in Iudea, Samaria, and Galilee: for into these three partes this lande is diuided."
Recent hardcovers, red cloth covered boards, paper title label, recent front and rear endpapers. Covers measure 400x280 mm (16x11 inches).
Contains 28 ORIGINAL LEAVES from the 1572 Bishop's Bible, lxxvii-cv, consisting of the First and Second Book of Maccabees. The bound in original leaves measure 391x267 mm (15 5/8 x 10 1/2 inches). Printed on rag laid paper, text in two columns, black lettering, woodcut initials, plus the wonderful engraved map on the last page.
There are rebound leaves from the 1572 Bishops' Bible held at the University of Iowa that, with some diligence, can be found online.
Condition: BEAUTIFUL CONDITION, NEAR FINE. A few spots, a small bit of toning here and there. I have never seen pages from the Second Folio 1572 Bishops' Bible in such lovely, bright, clean condition. The binding is solid and attractive, worthy of the pages it holds within.
