1890 RARE Antique Japanese HANGING Merchant ACCOUNT Book DAIFUKUCHO Handwritten Meiji period (1868-1912) Japan

Accounting records of an unknown merchant. Ruled pages filled with inked Japanese handwritten calligraphic entries and numerous ink stamp chops. There are numbers and dates on most pages, I would date this from 1890. I can't find definitive words describing what is being transacted. Many entries say deposit with the date and amount but no mention of for what. I saw overtime fee written here and there, some pages are records of labor payments. The many chops could be from supervisors or recipients of the money. There are random words such as melon, tea and measurement, there are over one thousand written pages, but I just can't read it.

16 volumes bound together into one very large hanging book, stiff textured paper covers, 7.5" thick, 6.25" wide x 9" long, front edge paper tabs, thick knotted hanging rope bound in.

Each of the 16 volumes has around 49 folded leaves (196 pages), for a total of approximately 3100 total pages. About 1500 pages have writing, the pages are folded with writing inward, perhaps for secrecy, so they were bound after the entries were made, clearly a ledger of great importance to the merchant. This is an unusually large and thick hanging Daifukucho, with the most volumes bound together, and thickest hanging rope I have ever seen. It weighs almost 6 pounds. A fascinating piece of Japanese history.

Excellent antique condition, the front cover has remnants of black writing covered with droplets of black and orange ink. There are some old inactive worm holes here and there. Overall, solid, tight, and bright, complete with no torn out pages. A unique Japanese Meiji artifact with great architectural presence. It would look stunning hanging.
