Large folio hardbound in 3/4 leather over marbled paper covered boards, gilt title on spine, 16.5" x 11.5", 56 issues, 896 total pages, each issue has an engraved title page, occasional in-text engravings and illustrated advertisements.
The first four issues of Volume I have the engraved banner title TURF, FIELD, FARM, the remaining issues of Volume I and II have the engraved banner title TURF, FIELD, AND FARM and header title Sportsman's Oracle and Country Gentleman's Newspaper. Starting with Volume III, the engraved banner title remains TURF, FIELD, AND FARM, but the header title changes to The Turf, Field And Farm, dropping the Sportsman's Oracle &c.
Contents heavily weighted towards Horse Racing and Trotting, with extensive details on Thoroughbreds, Stud Book, Pedigrees, Jockeys, Races, Tracks, and Owners. Contains articles on Outdoor Sports and Pastimes including Base Ball, Foot Ball, Cricket, Angling, Racing, Shooting, Hunting, Big-Game Hunting, Dog and Horse Breeding and Pedigrees, Fox Hunting, Livestock, Billiards, Wagering, Boating, Games, Chess, Checkers, Veterinary Matters, Gentlemen Farming, Weird Science, Diseases, Pedestrianism, Theatre, the Stage, and several pages of ads per issue, some illustrated.
Of note, this volume predates the first appearance of the Bruce brothers compendium of thoroughbred foals, The American Stud Book, first published in 1868.
CONDITION: complete as issued, front board disbound but present, wear to the boards and spine covering, internally, some light foxing here and there throughout, small edge wear, closed tears, small chips, one leaf has a horizontal tear from edge to gutter which remains bound in and legible, a few issues are more toned than others, overall a respectable volume of these elusive horse racing journals published just months after the end of the Civil War.
