1787 AN ESSAY ON ANGER - IT DESTROYS FAMILIES AND NATIONS, AND TRAMPLES LAWS

AN ESSAY ON ANGER, by John Fawcett.

LEEDS: Printed by Thomas Wright for the Author, and Sold by Mr. T. Wills, et al, 1787. First Edition.

Leather covered boards, gilt framing to the front and rear covers, gilt designs and gilt titles to the spine, 4.25x7 inches (11x17 cm). Pagination: xii, 13-150, [8].

GOOD condition, the covers' front fold is cracked, the rear fold is rubbled, the corner tips are worn, and there are some shelf rubs and signs of handling, but overall the covers are quite lovely; internally, the front and rear inner hinges are cracked but holding well, the first and last few pages have offsetting to their margins from the leather covers, otherwise the pages are very nice, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. One of the nicer copies of this ORIGINAL 1787 FIRST EDITION that I have seen.

From the Introduction:

"[Anger] has subjected nations to continual frights and losses, and made death and terror walk about in their most horrid forms. Then what desolation reigns! Rest is disturbed, property destroyed, families are broken, friends are suspected, enemies are feared, laws are trampled upon..."

"The miseries and mischiefs occasioned by lawless anger in private societies, and domestic connections, are without end...The disunion of nations, the breakup of families, and the disquietude of neighborhoods, arise in general from ungoverned anger - that root of bitterness, that fruitful source of human woes."
