THE COCKETTES Les Ghouls 1970 POSTER Queer Halloween Horror UNDERGROUND DRAG SHOW San Francisco RADICAL SEXUAL ANARCHY

The Cockettes, a queer theatre drag ensemble, created a subversive series of late night underground film screenings followed by outrageous, campy, drug fueled midnight stage shows in San Francisco. Beginning in 1969 as Midnight Films and changing to Nocturnal Dream Shows until their last show in 1972. Short lived but highly influential, The Cockettes' radical sexual anarchy ("genderfuck") helped pave the way for gay liberation, the free expression of queerness and gender fluidity.
