Two Volumes. Hardcover books, leather spine and cloth covered boards, spine titled in gilt, 6x9 inches. Pagination: Volume I: lxxvi, 472, with Errate slip bound in following page lxxvi. Volume II: 545 pages.

Contains the called for frontispiece, three folding plates (a map and two plans), and three engraved plates, as follows: Volume I: Frontispiece portrait of "The Author in his Dress when Among Indians"; fold-open Plan of Karlahue following page 218, and fold-open Plan of the Gardens at Schwetzingen following page 220. Volume II: Fold-open Map of the Mississippi River from Lake Superior to the Gulf of Mexico, bound in following the title-page; three PLATES of Indian Ornaments, with descriptions, bound in at the rear.

GOOD condition: The bindings have some spine end wear, rubbing to the spine folds, a couple light corner bumps, and a few small stains, but are solid, have bright spine gilt titles, and are doing their job well; internally, the text pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked, with just a little foxing and age toning here and there; the fold-open maps and plans are all solid and fold-open well (quite well preserved!); the three plates at the end of volume II are significantly foxed, as normal. Overall one of the nicer sets of these two volumes I have seen (often the folding map and plans are missing or significantly torn, especially the map of the Mississippi river).

******Giacomo Costantino Beltrami. b.1779 d.1855, was an Italian jurist, author, and explorer, known for claiming to have discovered the headwaters of the Mississippi River in 1823 while on a trip through much of the United States (later expeditions determined a different source). Beltrami, Minnesota (in Polk County) and Beltrami County are named for him. He had an extensive network of notable figures for friends and acquaintances, including members of the powerful Medici family.******
