1938 SOIL SURVEY of NAPA VALLEY REGION with LARGE FOLDING COLOR MAP Later Printing
SOIL SURVEY OF THE NAPA AREA, CALIFORNIA,s bly E. J. Carpenter and Stanley W. Cosby.
Published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, in cooperation with the University of California Agricultural Experiment Stations. The booklet and enclosed folded map state "Series 1933, No. 13" and "Issued January 1938"; HOWEVER, the look and feel of this booklet and the glossy folding map, and the excellent condition they are in, indicate they are more recent REPRINTS, perhaps reprinted in the 1960s. Though I could find no later dates or reference to additional publishers in the booklet or on the map, the paper and the lovely glossy map in no way have the feel of an original 1930s publication from the USDA. NONETHELESS, this reprint (by whomever) matches page for page with digitized copies of the original online, and the fold-open map is great.
Booklet: paper covers, side stapled, 6x9 inches, 76 pages. Map: 32 x 38.5 inches.
Condition: The booklet is in NEAR FINE condition, a bit of toning to the cover margins, else tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. The folding map is also in NEAR FINE condition, feels like it has only been opened once or twice.
This large folding map shows the famous Napa Valley in remarkable detail on a scale of one inch per mile. The map extends from Calistoga south to Napa, and was originally produced as the Prohibition era ended and Napa's wine industry began its recovery. Printed on glossy paper in full color, the map locates all towns, villages, roads, railroads, and even individual buildings. It locates Stags Leap Manor, Zinfandel, Oak Knoll, Rutherford, Myrtledale Hot Springs, the Pacific Union College and much more. An impressive 64 geological types are identified with different colors and patterns.
