The Helpers Home and Workshop for the Mentally Retarded, located at 2626 Fulton Street in San Francisco was a pioneer in the Independent Living Movement for people with developmental disabilities. Helpers of the Mentally Retarded was originally founded in 1963 with residential homes for the developmentally challenged, revolutionizing their care by providing alternatives to the inhumane institutionalization that was common at the time and advocating for their rights to lead lives of dignity and respect. From 1963 to 2015, Helpers housed people living in a collection of homes near Golden Gate Park. In 2017 the charity became notorious due to embezzlement from the out-of-control socialite at the helm but that's another story.
