Condition:
The book has been professionally conserved with the covers and spine reattached, the inner hinges strengthened, and some pages repaired. The book is now solid and tight, in archival condition (i.e. showing its original wear).
The covers' leather spine and spine folds are scraped, cracked, and well worn; the leather corners are likewise worn. The front and rear boards show some scrapes, rubs, scratches, etc. but are generally nice, with gilt titling and designs on the front board and blind embossing on the rear board.
Internally, the inner hinges have been reinforced and strengthened, the first two leaves (title page and contents) and the last page have stiff creases and have been professionally repaired (repairs to the last page affects some sentences), the last plate has a stiff vertical crease but remains bright and clear, there are closed edge tears from handling, spots, marks, small areas of staining, and finger smudges here and there; overall the pages are clean and bright and the plates are lovely.
A solid, original 1879 first edition. Rare to find in archival condition and complete with all its plates, maps and original (though worn) covers.
