(All five volumes of this first edition state 1971 on the title page, however the Publisher's Note of Volume V states: "It took four years to complete the publication of this set. The Philippine Insurrection Against the United States is a foundational 5 volume collection of captured Philippine insurgent records. Covering 1896-1903, it documents the Philippine - American War, highlighting the struggle of the First Republic against U.S. occupation. Early in the 20th century it was twice withheld from publication by the U.S. government due to its sympathetic portrayal of the Philippine side.

Compiled by Capt. John R.M. Taylor of the U.S. Army, who, from 1901-1906, reviewed and supervised the translation of over 200,000 captured documents to create this archive.

The five volume set contains 1,534 selected documents, including telegraphic correspondence of Emilio Aguinaldo, official reports, and proclamations from 1898 to 1903. While titled an "Insurrection" by the U.S. government, the documents illustrate the intense Filipino resistance and desire for independence.

FIVE HARDCOVER BOOKS, blue cloth covered boards, titled in gilt on the front covers and spines, 6x9 inches.

The five volumes are:

Vol. I: 1571 to May 19, 1898, xxii, 525 pages;

Vol. II: May 19, 1898 to July 4, 1902, xii, 524 pages; Vol. III: May 19, 1898 to February 4, 1899, viii, 672 pages; Vol. IV: February 5, 1899 to November 13, 1899, xiii, 809 pages; Vol. V: November 13, 1899 to July 4, 1902, xviii, 829, 129.

CONDITION: The covers of all the volumes have light shelf rubs and a bit of wear to the spine folds, otherwise they are solid, sharp cornered, and attractive. All the volumes are foxed on their top page edges and only lightly so on the other page edges (page edges of the closed books). Internally, Volume I has the bottom-of-a-coffee-cup size brown stain to its front pastedown that has soaked through to some subsequent prelim pages, growing lighter on each page until it has fully disappeared (at least to my eyes) on page xiv. Otherwise all the pages of all the volumes are bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A very presentable set of this important work.

******In 1906 Taylor ordered the Government Printing Office to typeset proofs, with two volumes dedicated to his history of US - Philippine relations and three other volumes containing 1,340 supporting papers of original documents. Then Secretary of War William Howard Taft deferred its publication for fear of antagonizing both Americans and Filipinos. In 1909 a second attempt was made to publish the volumes when President Taft's former secretary James A. LeRoy wrote a critique objecting to its publication. The Bureau of Insular Affairs then abandoned the project. It was finally first published in the Philippines in 1971 by the Eugenio Lopez Foundation, with an Introduction by Renato Consantino.******
