A hard-to-find book on the history of roller skating and its push to become an Olympic Sport, made SCARCE with the SIGNATURE, INSCRIPTION, and LETTER to M.M. Shattuck of Skateland-by-the-Beach.
About the Book (from the Back Cover): "Roller Skating for Gold chronicles the sport's history from both the recreational and competitive perspectives, from the invention of the roller skate to roller skat-ing's rise as a wildly popular pastime in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to the inclusion of roller hockey as a demonstration sport in Barcelona. David H. Lewis explores the many reasons why roller skating has thus far been unsuccessful in its long effort to gain a place at the Olympics: the prestige and earlier development of ice skating, the lowbrow reputation of roller derby, the political squabbles within the roller skating community, even the rise of in-line skates which, while making skat-ing more popular than ever, actually contributed to the decision not to make roller hockey a regular Olympic event."
About M.M. "Red" Shattuck and his Skateland at the Beach (from Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet): "Skateland at the Beach was a famous historic roller skating rink located in San Francisco at the corner of Balboa Street and Great Highway in San Francisco's Ocean Beach neighborhood. It opened in 1947 and closed in 1972. It was owned and operated by M.M. "Red" Shattuck."
