About THE ASHENDENE PRESS (from Wikipedia):

******The Ashendene Press was a small private press founded by St John Hornby, b.1867 d.1946. It operated from 1895 to 1915 in Chelsea, London and was revived after the war in 1920. The press closed in 1935. Its peers included the Kelmscott Press and the Doves Press. These three presses were part of a "revival of fine printing" that focused on treating bookmaking as fine art. The Ashendene Press was famous for producing high quality works by Dante. Ashendene books were carefully printed with large margins, and despite their lack of extravagant decoration, they were considered spectacular works of art. Two original typefaces were created for the Ashendene Press: Subiaco and Ptolemy. The Press was also known for handwritten, colored initials by Graily Hewitt. The Press' main customers were fine book collectors.******

    About COLIN FRANKLIN (from Wikipedia):

******Colin Ellis Franklin, FSA, b.1923 d.2020, was an English writer, bibliographer, book-collector and antiquarian bookseller. He was born in Notting Hill, London. He worked for some years in publishing, at Routledge in London, before moving into antiquarian bookselling. He specialized in the study of private presses and the book arts, but also wrote on Shakespeare, Japanese books and prints, Lord Chesterfield, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and on printing techniques and media. He was Honorary President of the Oxford University Society of Bibliophiles, Patron to the Oundle School Society of Bibliophiles, and President of the Private Libraries Association and the Double Crown Club.******

This is the First Edition of The Billings Rollography, self-published as a three volume set in 1990. Softcovers with tape covered spine, clear vinyl cover protectors, and photocopied pages. The set was later issued in a hardcover edition as well.

VERY GOOD condition, some scratches and shelf rubs to the clear plastic over-covers, overall lovely, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

    The three volumes are:

VOLUME ONE: Two complete listings of all 88-note QRS Word Rolls, from the beginning (R No. 100, issued in 1916) to Roll No. 6000, issued in November 1934, one numerical by se number and one alphabetic by title. 357 pages.

VOLUME TWO: A history of the roll companies included in Recordo and QRS; tech information on Recordo; a complete listing by roll company of all Recordo-coded and So Carola-coded expression rolls, numeric by serial number and alphabetic by title, then a separa combined section of classical music listed alphabetically by composer; and finally, a compen composite listing of all Recordo-coded rolls, alphabetic by title. 382 pages.

VOLUME THREE: A complete listing of all pianists credited in the above two groupings, biographical information and photographs where possible, including an alphabetic list of all they played: QRS 88-note, Recordo and Solo Carola. 435 pages.

This sale is for the three volume set, Player Piano Music 1917-1934. Years later Ginny and Bob Billings compiled and published a volume 4, 5 and 6, comprising Player Piano Music from 1934-1994.

From the Introduction (on the verso of the title page):

******This three-volume set is the culmination of twenty years of combing available literature, grilling original artists, and basic research. Had the Editors worked another twenty years, the project still would not have been error free or completely to their satisfaction, but it is as close to that goal as can reasonably be expected.

The significance of QRS Word Rolls to Recordo is that most popular QRS Recordo rolls were first issued in the 88-note version before being coded with Recordo expression. The Editors hope that 88-note Imperial and 88-note U.S. lists will be compiled and published by someone else to complete the correlations.******

About the CRANACH PRESS (from various Internet sources):

******The Cranach Press was founded by Count Harry Graf Kessler (1868-1937) with the undertaking to print the finest possible editions of the world's greatest literature in new and important German translations. Kessler employed print-men and illustrators of outstanding ability and produced some of the world's most beautiful books.

In 1913 Kessler commissioned Edward Gordon Craig, an English theatrical designer and theoretician, to make woodcut illustrations for a sumptuous edition of Shakespeare's Hamlet for the Cranach Press. A German translation by Gerhart Hauptmann, with illustrations by Craig, was finally published in Weimar in 1928. The English version, edited by J. Dover Wilson, came out in 1930. This book, printed on fine paper, using different type-faces, with marginal notes with source quotations, and featuring Craig's woodcuts, is regarded by many as one of the finest examples of the printer's art to have been published in the 20th century.******

It appears that the books were bound with the previous owner's favorite issues.

    PHILADELPHIA: Crissy & Markley, Printers, 1852, 1853 and 1854.

The gorgeous plates are what make these works rare and wonderful. As the Publisher writes on the last page of Volume III: "Our Plates are unsurpassed. There is not a work of the kind published in London whose plates are more beautifully executed, certainly not in this country. There are in the Volume just furnished [Volume III], COUNTING EACH DOUBLE PLATE AS TWO, THIRTEEN PLATES, all colored, and of most beautiful subjects. The paper on which the Florist is printed is much superior to that generally for magazines: it is made for us at one of the best mills in the country..."

PLATES INCLUDED IN THE TWO VOLUMES:

VOLUME I (containing issues from Volume I and Volume II) has TWELVE HAND COLORED PLATES (10 single page plates, and 1 double page plate which the Publisher counts as 2).

VOLUME III: Contains TEN HAND COLORED PLATES (of the THIRTEEN called for), (4 single page plates, and 3 double page plates which the Publisher counts as 6)

    The ISSUES in the book titled VOLUME I (containing issues from V.I and V.II), published in 1852 and 1853, are: V.I N.2 TWO PLATES + pgs 33-64; V.1 N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.I N.6 pgs 127-192; V.II N.3 ONE PLATE + pgs 65-96; V.II N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.II N.6 ONE PLATE + pgs 161-192; V.II N.7 ONE PLATE + pgs 193-224; V.II N.8 pgs 218-256 (Publisher's incorrect pagination); V.II N.9 ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 257-288; V.II N.10 ONE PLATE + pgs 289-320; V.II N.11 pgs 321-352; and V.II N.12 TWO PLATES + pgs 354-388. The title page for the hardbound Volume II and the Index are bound in at the rear, pages numbered 389-392.

The hardbound VOLUME III has its overall title page, stating Publisher and the date 1854, but the title pages of the bound-in issues do not show their individual issue numbers or months of publication as did the issues of Volume I and II. The pagination of the issues in Volume III Is: iv; ONE PLATE + pgs 33-64; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 97-128; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 97-128; pgs 193-224; ONE PLATE + pgs 225-256; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 257-288; ONE PLATE + pgs 289-320; and ONE PLATE + pgs 354-380.

About The Great Morgani (from Wikipedia): ******The Great Morgani (aka Frank Lima) is an American street performer and performance artist from Santa Cruz, California. Although he is an experienced accordionist with 60 years of experience, he is most noted for his spectacular costumes. Frank Lima was born in 1942 in Los Banos, California. His family moved to Santa Cruz in 1946. Lima started performing at age 11, mostly in trios at Portuguese events. He enjoyed success in his first career as a stockbroker, but retired when he was 35. Almost two decades later in 1995, he embarked on a second career playing accordion as a street performer. In the first few years of his street performing, he performed with his face uncovered. Gradually, he developed more elaborate costumes, relying on the sewing skills he learned from his mother, a master seamstress. Although he performs barefaced privately, he performs in public with face covered, often by the material used in the rest of his costume. He has collected 42 accordions and assembled more than 130 costumes. In February 2014 Lima announced his retirement from street performing in downtown Santa Cruz due to city ordinances that regulate artists.******

Original vintage photocopied dialogue continuity screenplay, white paper covers, 45 numbered pages, 8.5" x 14", printed on one side only, bound with one staple at the top left corner. The Dialogue Continuity is a shot-by-shot / reel-by-reel breakdown of the script. VERY GOOD Condition: age toning and light wear, 3 pages pulled from the staple but all pages are present, bottom edgewear to one pulled page, in some areas of the page bottoms the photocopying has made the printing difficult to read, but it is still mostly legible, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Scarce, this is the only copy of the Dialogue Continuity Screenplay of The Magnificent Seven I have seen, there are none in the OCLC.

Continuity Scripts were an important part of the film industry in its early days. They were typically created after a film was "in the can", but before it was released, in order to create a written "copy" of the film. A good "Continuity" provided a transcription of every shot and scene in detail as it occurred in the finished film, something that could obviously not be known until a film was completed. Continuities were created both for copyright protection and for a "record" of a film. A true continuity script was therefore often the only archived, scene-by-scene, record of many early films.

The Magnificent Seven, the iconic western by John Sturges, is a celebrated adaptation of the legendary Akira Kurosawa film The Seven Samurai, transferred to the Wild West, and shot on location in Mexico. The Magnificent Seven has only William Roberts credited as the screenwriter, but both Walter Bernstein and Walter Newman contributed significantly to the creation of one of the greatest westerns ever filmed.

One of the earliest and most thorough studies about Black newspapers. In this study of African American newspapers in Kansas, Mr. Moten identified many factors that affected the development of the newspapers, including politics, the lack of coverage for Black issues and concerns by white newspapers, and the Exodusters Migration (Exodusters was a name given to African Americans who migrated from states along the Mississippi River to Kansas in the late 19th century as part of the Exoduster Movement. It was the first general migration of Black people following the Civil War). He found that the press created political alliances and expanded spheres of influence for Black leaders.

Rashey Burial Moten, Jr. (1913-2000) the first African American to lead a Catholic Charities organization, more specifically as the Executive Director at Catholic Charities Kansas City-Saint Joseph from 1970 to 1981. President Carter placed Mr. Moten on the Advisory Committee of the White House Conference on Families. Mr. Moten also helped launch Head Start in 1965, under the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson.

About the Russian Film WE ARE FROM KRONSTADT (excerpt from Wikipedia and IMDb):

******In 1919, during the post revolution Russian Civil War, a naval detachment (made up of communist Reds) defends the strategic city of Petrograd from the White Russian counterrevolutionary forces. Director Yefim Dzigan had himself fought for the Bolsheviks in the fleet, so the Red sailors are the heroes of the film. The young Soviet State was besieged by enemies on all sides, and the Revolution was fighting for its life. While clearly propagandistic, the film is often quite poetic visually, not naturalistic as was prescribed by authorities at the time. The film was honored at the 1937 Paris World's Fair.

Writing for The Spectator in 1937, Graham Greene gave the film a good review, characterizing it as being "in the tradition of boys' stories, full of last charges and fights to the death, heroic sacrifices and narrow escapes, all superbly directed", and summarizing it as an "unusual mixture of poetry and heroics". Identifying moments of humour and pathos, Greene claimed that a Fordian poetic sense (i.e. not melodic arrangement, but moral composition) had thoroughly impregnated the film from the first shot to the last, and that the writing resonated with Chekhov's definition of the novelist's purpose, "life as it is: life as it ought to be".******
