LEAKE, for WALTER KETTILBY, at the Bishop's Head in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1700. First edition. Lacking covers though the spine leather covering is still partially present with its five raised spine bands, 4to, 6x7.5". The eight sermons are paginated individually, with the exceptions of numbers 4 & 5 and 7 & 8 that are paginated consecutively. PAGINATION: [2] (title page for this eight sermon book, blank verso), [4] (title page to first sermon, blank verso, author's dedication), 24 (first sermon); 30 (second sermon); [2] (ad and blank verso) 31 (third sermon), [1 ad]; 68 (fourth and fifth sermons); 36 (sixth sermon); 64 pages (seventh and eighth sermons). Condition: Lacking covers, as noted above; lacking the blank endpapers; textually complete including the two first title pages (see pagination above); the first 8 pages and the last signatures consisting of pages 33-65 of the final sermon are disbound (i.e. present but laid on loosely); the first title page is worn and chipped at the edges with a torn bottom corner that affects one word; the second title page (the title page of the First Sermon) is also worn and chipped along its edges, but not affecting text; the inner pages are lightly age toned with heavier toning at the edges; about half of the pages have noticeable shorelining / water staining to their front upper area, covering about 1/3 to 1/2 of the page, but the text is always clear and fully legible beneath; there is some edge wear, corner creases, corner tip loss, and a spot or two, here and there throughout. A great copy for a fine rebinding, being a complete copy with both first title pages, and text that is bright and clear throughout. A Scarce First Edition of this Important Work. ******Charles du Fresne, sieur du Cange, b.1610 d.1688, was a distinguished French philologist and historian of the Middle Ages and Byzantium.

Du Cange's pioneering work distinguished medieval Latin and Greek from their earlier classical forms, marking the beginning of the study of the historical development of languages.

Du Cange is one of the historians Edward Gibbon cites most frequently in his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. In one footnote he calls du Cange "our sure and indefatigable guide in the Middle Ages and Byzantine history."******

******The Wakan Sansai Zue (Illustrated Sino-Japanese Encyclopedia) is an illustrated Japanese leishu encyclopedia published in 1712 in the Edo period. It consists of 105 volumes in 81 books. Its compiler was Terashima or Terajima (Terajima Ryoan), a doctor from Osaka. It describes and illustrates various items and activities of daily life. As seen from the title of the book (wa), which means Japan and (kan), which means China), Terajima's idea was based on a Chinese encyclopedia, specifically the Ming work Sancai Tuhui ("Pictorial..." or "Illustrated Compendium of the Three Powers") by Wang Qi (1607), known in Japan as the Sansai Zue. Reproductions of the Wakan Sansai Zue are still in print in Japan.******

About FRANÇOIS DOUAREN (from Wikipedia): ******François Douaren (also sometimes spelled Duaren; Franciscus Duarenus; Francisci Duareni) b. 1509 d. 1559,

was a French jurist and professor of law at the University of Bourges. After studies in Paris under Budé and in Bourges, Douaren worked as an advocate for the Parlement of Paris. In 1538, he was called to teach at Bourges. Following a bitter dispute with Baro, he abandoned the chair for Paris until Baro's death in 1550, after which Douaren returned to teach at Bourges. Like his compatriots Jacques Cujas, François Hotman and Hugues Doneau, Douaren was one of the leading representatives of the legal humanist school of thought within the science of Roman law on the European continent. These 16th century French law professors applied the philological methods of the Italian humanists to legal texts. It was their aim to arrive at a historically more accurate understanding of the texts of the Roman Corpus Iuris Civilis. In addition to numerous commentaries on the Corpus, Douaren wrote a leading commentary on the Roman law of obligations, Commentarius de pactis (1544), which greatly influenced modern theories of obligations. His 1544 programme of studies, De ratione docendi discendique iuris epistola, was the first statement of the mos gallicus, the French Humanist approach to higher education. Its core contents - language studies, introductory classes on the base of the Justinian Code, a methodical approach based on the laws of the Corpus - came to be introduced at most European legal faculties.******

About SIR RICHARD STEELE (from Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet): ******Sir Richard Steele (bap. 12 March 1672 - 1 September 1729) was an Irish writer and politician, remembered as co-founder, with his friend Joseph Addison, of the magazine The Spectator. Steele became a Whig Member of Parliament in 1713, for Stockbridge. He was soon expelled for issuing a pamphlet in favor of the Hanoverian succession. When George I of Great Britain came to the throne in the following year, Steele was knighted and given responsibility for the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. He returned to parliament in 1715, for Boroughbridge. While at Drury Lane, Steele wrote and directed the sentimental comedy The Conscious Lovers, which was an immediate hit. However, in 1719 Steele found himself in agreement with Lord Oxford regarding The Bill Of Peerage, and wrote: A LETTER TO THE EARL OF O--D, CONCERNING THE BILL OF PEERAGE. This pamphlet and Steele's subsequent speeches caused him to fall out with Addison and, in 1724, he retired to his wife's homeland of Wales, where he spent the remainder of his life.******

VOLUME II ILLUSTRATIONS: Frontispiece + 63 Plates. Plates printed on one side only. Plus engraved headpieces, tailpieces, vignettes, and initials.

CONDITION: The pages and plates of both volumes are all present and suitable for rebinding, but the bindings are in poor condition and the books need to be rebound. The books are split into many sections, with many loose signatures, pages, etc. The front and rear boards are original and present but worn with peeling leather. The spines have split at numerous places and are in disrepair, and their leather coverings are chipping and flaking easily. The front and rear boards could be used in a rebinding with a new backing.

VOLUME I Condition of Pages and Plates: The first and last few pages have edgewear, soiling and some spotting, as do some pages here and there. The gutter edge of many pages of this volume have browned because clear tape (that browned with age) was applied to that edge to try and keep the pages bound in, some old tape still remains in many places, and there are brown tape ghosts on the blank rear endpapers. There is toning and foxing mainly to the pages facing the plates and the blank verso of the plates and to the first and last few pages, but some here and there throughout as well. Some (perhaps 1/4) of the plates have browned, and have dark areas in the margins. (Perhaps smoke damage from long ago? But no smoke smell, just the nice old paper.) A few of the plates and the pages facing them are heavily foxed. Despite the flaws to some of the plates, all the plates present, and are quite rare.

VOLUME II Condition of Pages and Plates: The pages and plates of this volume are in good condition. A few pages have some tape and/or tape browning at the left edge; there is a bit of foxing throughout but nothing significant on the pages or plates; there is no significant browning of the plates or margins; there is some offsetting, spotting, soiling, and edgewear to the first and last few pages. The fold-open frontispiece is splitting at the bottom of the fold, has some old tape repair on the backside, is toning and has some shorelining on the gutter margin. There is a pagination error following page 99, the facing blank backside of a plate is counted as a page. I have collated this book and all is present. Though many sections, signatures, and pages are loose, the volume is complete, and the plates are bright and clear.

There is a large old signature and inscription dated 1782 on a blank prelim of each volume and a very small one at the top of the title pages: "Given to me this day by my Mother / (?) Stephenson Junior / 10th April 1782".

These 300 year old books are complete including 133 plates. Despite their flaws these books are well deserving of preservation.

PLEASE NOTE: These heavy books will be expensive to ship internationally.

Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and a fold-open chart. CONDITION: The Vellum covers are split at the folds but holding well with the five cord bindings; the vellum from the top spine compartment has broken off (i.e. is missing), there is an edge piece of vellum missing from the second compartment (the compartment with the hand-written title) that partially affects one letter, and there is some cracking to the spine vellum; the front and rear vellum covers have some soiling, age toning, and spotting; overall the vellum covers show wear, but are still quite attractive in a Harry Potter Hogwarts Library sort of way. Internally very nice, some age foxing, corner creasing, toning and soiling here and there throughout, but overall the inner pages are complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A quite impressive copy. An Important 289 year-old book by an Renowned SCOTTISH Writer and Scholar. With its vellum binding, the book looks impressive on and off the shelf. A snippet about GEORGE BUCHANAN (from a much longer Wikipedia article): ******George Buchanan (February 1506 - 28 September 1582) was a Scottish historian and humanist scholar. Brown says that Buchanan was "the most profound intellectual sixteenth century Scotland produced." His ideology of resistance to royal usurpation gained widespread acceptance during the Scottish Reformation. Brown says the ease with which King James VII was deposed in 1689 shows the power of Buchananite ideas.******

About JOHAN FREDERIK CLASSEN (from Wikipedia):

******Johan Frederik Classen, frequently known simply as J. F. Classen, b.1725 d.1792, was a Danish-Norwegian industrialist, major general, landowner and founder of Det Classenske Fideicommis. He served as chancellery adviser to King Frederik V.

A patron of literature, Classen bought books at home and abroad until he had amassed a large library. In his will Classen left all his assets and possessions to a charitable foundation, Det Classenske Fideicommis. It was to be used "to educate good people...and to help to alleviate poverty and misery." The fund still has considerable assets.

The Classen Library (Danish: Det Classenske Bibliotek) in Amaliegade in Copenhagen was built at the time of Classen's death in 1792 to house his extensive library of some 20,000 volumes. It was a public library in Copenhagen, Denmark, the third largest library in the city, surpassed only by the Royal Danish Library and Copenhagen University Library. It existed until 1867 when it was merged with the Copenhagen University Library.****** (Read much more about J. F. Classen on his Wikipedia page.)

SCARCE 1740 BOOK by SCALIGER with Two Interesting BOOKPLATES. About JOSEPH JUSTUS SCALIGER (excerpted from Wikipedia): ******Joseph Justus Scaliger, b. 1540 d. 1609, was a French religious leader and scholar, known for expanding the notion of classical history from Greek and ancient Roman history to include Persian, Babylonian, Jewish and ancient Egyptian history. He spent the last sixteen years of his life in the Netherlands. During the first seven years of his residence at Leiden his reputation was at its highest point. His literary judgement was unquestioned. From his throne at Leiden he ruled the learned world; a word from him could make or mar a rising reputation. At the same time, Scaliger had made numerous enemies. He hated ignorance, but he hated still more half-learning, and most of all dishonesty in argument or in quotation. He had no toleration for the disingenuous argument and the misstatements of facts of those who wrote to support a theory or to defend an unsound cause. His pungent sarcasm soon reached the ears of the persons who were its object, and his pen was not less bitter than his tongue. He was conscious of his power, and not always sufficiently cautious or sufficiently gentle in its exercise. He made many enemies. The results of his method of historical criticism threatened the Catholic controversialists and the authenticity of many of the documents on which they relied. The Jesuits, who aspired to be the source of all scholarship and criticism, saw the writings and authority of Scaliger as a formidable barrier to their claims. Scaliger was known to be an irreconcilable Protestant and as long as his intellectual supremacy was unquestioned, the Protestants had the advantage in learning and scholarship. His enemies therefore aimed to attack him as a man and to destroy his reputation. This was no easy task, for his moral character was high. Nonetheless, in 1607 the Jesuits successfully attacked Scaliger by publishing a 400 page tome that purportedly exposed 500 lies in Scaliger's works. This was said to have broken Scaliger's spirit, and two years later he died.******

SCARCE 1747 TWO VOLUME SET on LAW by the highly influential BOHMER. These tomes would look great on the SHELF of any LAWYER or LEGAL SCHOLAR, or in the bookcase of anyone who appreciates rare, interesting old books! About JUSTUS HENNING BÖHMER (from Wikipedia): ******Justus Henning Böhmer (b. 1674 in Hanover, d. 1749 in Halle) was an outstanding German jurist, ecclesiastical jurist, Professor of the University of Halle; and also Geheimer Rat, Count Palatine and Chancellor of the Duchy of Magdeburg. In the judicial field initially he was a protectionist of the existing "territorial system" or Erastian theory of ecclesiastical government, but in the following years he tended towards the natural right and "Kollegialismus". In his first great work, "Jus Ecclesiasticum Protestantiun" he drew on the traditional Canon Law, but he reformed the law so that it was exempted from rigid orthodoxy, principles, resistance and dogmatism. Affected by the ideas of the Age of Enlightenment he represented an increasing critical and scientific development instead of a religious fundamentalism. Böhmer's legal thinking predominated in Protestantism church law of the 18th century, and was the basis for numerous church reforms yet to be. His results in the domain of civil law were of similar importance. In his next main work "Introductio in Jus Digestorum", a pandects-compendium which was maintained until the 20th century, he liberated the traditional German law from the influence of the old Roman law and thus prepared the basis of "general Landrecht (law code) of the Prussian states". A huge amount of further significant and notable works on civil and church law as well as expertises were penned by him, and were published by his son Georg Ludwig Böhmer after Justus Henning's death in the collected edition "Exercitationes ad Pandectas".****** INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: These two large books are heavy and will require substantial additional shipping charges.
