TWO LARGE SCRAPBOOKS kept by JEAN (Jeannie) LA BREE of CASSELTON, NORTH DAKOTA. 1950s-1980s.

The scrapbooks consist of two large, 15x13 inch, 3 ring binders with vinyl covers, each with approximately 30 leaves (i.e. 60 pages) that are covered with plastic. Almost every page is filled with glued or tipped in articles, photographs, cards, notes, letters, and other ephemera related to Casselton, North Dakota, and to the life of Jean La Bree from the 1950s through the early 1980s as a High Schooler in Casselton; a college student in Missouri, Miami and New York; an aspiring model and professional dancer in New York; etc.

One scrapbook contains a lot of pages filled with clipped articles and photographs related to Casselton, North Dakota, where Jean La Bree grew up and where her father was a lawyer; lots of pages filled with travel ephemera; and lots of pages filled with ephemera from New York including modeling photos, dance photos, Hunter College items, a Birdland Jazz Center item, etc. etc. While in New York was Jean La Bree a model, dancer, student at Hunter, a jazz aficionado? The dates range from the 1950s to the early 1980s.

The other scrapbook has a handwritten title on the spine that says: "JEANNE COLLEGE YEARS: Stephens [Stephens College] Columbia, Missouri; University of Miami; Etc." The first page includes an announcement of Commencement Exercises for the Senior Class of Stephens College. It is dated 1952 and has the signature of Jeannie Claire La Bree. Did she then take her AA degree and go to the University of Miami, then Hunter College (New York)? Looks like she did. Lots of college related ephemera including photographs of fellow students and friends, newspaper clippings (including a number of articles about Panty Raids that turned nasty), programs, banners etc. What's a cloth Confederate Flag doing in here? Hmmm.

The Scrapbooks are in VERY GOOD condition.

The 1940 census provides the following information on Jean La Bree - Age: 7; Born: North Dakota, Casselton; Gender: Female; Home in 1940: Casselton, North Dakota; Father Gordon La Bree 39, Mother Olga La Bree 35.

What happened to Jean Claire La Bree after 1940 is in these two filled scrapbooks. This Casselton, North Dakota, girl who moved on to live an adventurous woman's life is just waiting to be uncovered. By you.

******The present exhibition places on display a selection of outstanding ukiyoe paintings and woodblock prints, including Hiroshige paintings never before shown publicly, from the collection of Aoki Tosaku (1870-1946), a businessman from Tochigi prefecture.

For many years (the collection) remained inaccessible to the general public, but in 1997 it attracted nationwide attention overnight when it was donated to the town of Bato in Tochigi prefecture by Aoki Tosaku's son. The town is at present proceeding with construction of an art museum to house the collection, but we have been given special permission to exhibit a part of the collection before the official opening.

The forty-odd paintings by Hiroshige that are the collection's major attraction constitute the largest such group in the world. The exhibition brings together some two hundred carefully selected items from the Aoki Collection, including, in addition to these Hiroshige paintings, woodblock prints by Kunisada, Kuniyochi, Kobayashi Kiyochika, Innoue Yasuji; and oils by Kawamura Kiyoo.******

This is an UNPRODUCED SCREENPLAY by EVA BARTOK titled LETTER TO MY DAUGHTER or IMRE. Undated (1970s?) The screenplay seems to be Semi-Autobiographical. It tells the story of a Mother and Her Young Daughter in Nazi Germany. Eva Bartok had a Catholic mother and a Jewish Father, and so does the mother in this screenplay. The inner angst this caused Bartok (and the mother and child in this screenplay) during the Nazi years is on full display. Photocopied on plain white paper (copy machine copies were, and still are, common among draft, production and working screenplays; drafts could be quickly made and sent to the film's writers, agents, producers, directors, etc.), 8.5x11 inches, 136 pages plus a title page, pages printed on one side only. Plastic spiral bound. GOOD condition, the title page has some words covered with White Out and white label tape, the title is written in black marker on the front page edges; there are a few relevant margin notes (photocopied as is this entire draft); the last few pages have light staining at the left margin; there are the usual photocopying dust marks and some corner creases, otherwise the script is bright and clear. An Unusual and Rare Screenplay by the Actress EVA BARTOK, perhaps revealing some of what it was like for her as a Catholic / Jewish child married to a Nazi Officer in Nazi Germany. This is the only copy that I have or have ever seen. About EVA BARTOK (from Wikipedia): ******Eva Bartok (b. 1927 d. 1998), was an actress born in Budapest, Hungary as Eva Marta Szoke Ivanovics. She began acting in films in 1950 and her last credited appearance was in 1966. She is best known for appearances in Blood and Black Lace, The Crimson Pirate, Operation Amsterdam, and Ten Thousand Bedrooms. During World War II, a teenaged Bartok, the daughter of a Jewish father and a Catholic mother, was forced to marry Hungarian Nazi officer Geza Kovacs; the marriage was annulled after the war on the grounds of coercion of a minor. She had four other marriages, all of which ended in divorce, including her final marriage, to actor Curd Jurgens (1955-56). Her daughter Deana was born in 1957, shortly after the marriage to Jurgens ended. Three decades later, Bartok claimed Deana's biological father was actually Frank Sinatra, with whom she had a brief affair in 1956. Eva Bartok died on 1 August 1998 in London.******

Photo Album, softcover, printed dark grey paper wrappers, oblong, 10" x 6", 14 pages, side staple bound, to each page is adhered a 7" x 5" sepia toned photograph featuring different views of the interior and grounds of the Evan's Koronis Lake lakeside Summer Home, a total of 14 different photographs. Included are interior and exterior shots, Mr. and Mrs. Evans are in many of the images, standing near a gazebo next to the lake, sitting on a wooden bench amongst the trees and on the stairs leading up to the front door of their rather lovely house, sitting inside their well appointed home taking in the view, and reading a newspaper in front of a roaring fire, Mr. Evans showing off his wood cutting skills, and watching an antique Model T drive along the unpaved driveway. The photographs seem quite professional, it appears more like a real estate brochure than a memory book. The original photographs are very well composed and the house and grounds are beautiful. VERY GOOD CONDITION: the paper covers have some staining, the front cover has a 1" closed spine margin tear and the rear cover has a 3" closed spine margin tear, some spots of glue residue here and there, and the original photographs are bright and unmarked.

Two softcover issues and one accompanying book, 32, 24, 159 pages. The issues have b&w illustrations. All three items are encased in a two part slipcase.

The double issue 1-2 and issue 3 were originally published by the Berlin publishing house Skythen in 1922. They contain text and drawings of the Russian avant-garde, with contributions by Viktor Sklovskij, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Boris Pasternak, Sergej Esenin, Nikolaj Punin, Charles Vildrac, Ivan Goll, Jules Romains, Le Corbusier and others. Typographic design was by El Lisickij. The contributions were mostly in Russian, with a few in French and English.

VERY GOOD condition, the slipcase has some light sunning, still solid and doing its job well; the internal 3 books are in near fine condition, look and feel unused, a very presentable copy.

The publisher, lars-muller-publishers, is selling copies of this item for 850 Swiss Francs - $975 at the current exchange rate. Say what?!

In 1991, Nobuhiko Kitamura published his first photograph collection through his fashion brand Hysteric Glamour. Kitamura produced a "series of books with people who firmly believe they have the energy to elevate the feeling of HYSTERIC." Following similar pioneering works that blur the line between fashion and art such as Comme des Garçons SIX magazine. Hysteric Glamour's early photography books laid the groundwork for the collaborative culture that came to define Harajuku in the 1990s.

A solid, presentable copy.

From a Japanese review on a Japanese website (roughly translated by Google, edited for clarity):

******This is a book that my parents bought me about 30 years ago. As a train lover, I often pulled this book off the bookshelf and looked at the illustrations and photos of the trains. I lost the book more than 20 years ago, but I recently found it again and bought it.

There are many trains that have been abolished since this book was published in 1982, which makes the illustrations of trains (such as Shinkansen 0 series vehicles), all the more interesting. Not only the trains, but also train names and rail lines themselves have changed or been abolished, for example the Nagano Shinkansen is no longer running, and the steep slope Usui Pass between Karuizawa and Yokogawa in Nagano Prefecture is now pulled by heavy duty electric locomotives. There are also pictures of "Asama" of the L limited express and of the old Shinkansen's general command center.

There are technical details I still do not understand, such as "In the Moha 781 intermediate electric car, the control of the main motor is constant current control by thyristor continuous phase control." The end of the book is full of such details, including the technology of train power, speed control, brakes, signals, etc. Maybe you will understand them.

When I turned the pages after a long absence, I felt very nostalgic.******

An international association of Maoist Marxist Leninist revolutionary parties, the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement (circa 1984-2007) was a steadfast supporter of the Palestinian Intifada resistance movement in the West Bank and Gaza.

Off-set lithograph on newsprint, large format, 34" x 22.75". GOOD CONDITION: Folded, tiny tears where the folds meet at the center, toning to the edges and folds, tiny stab holes down the left margin about 3" apart, light edge wear, overall a solid, bright copy.

In Arabic and Spanish. Quite scarce, I have only seen an on-line version collected in The Palestine Poster Project Archives, an English and a French/Turkish edition of this poster were also printed.

Handy, the "Father of the Blues" composed the music for Phillis Wheatley poetry, and collaborated with Langston Hughes on a number of his poems as did Margaret Bonds, there are over 30 contributors including jazz luminaries Eubie Blake, James P. Johnson, Andy Razaf, Luckey Roberts and Ismay Andrews.

William Christopher Handy (1873-1958) born to former slaves, W. C. Handy was one of the first to compose, play and publish a steady stream of blues, spiritual arrangements, marches, hymns, and miscellaneous songs. His collections include Blues: An Anthology (1941), and A Book of Negro Spirituals (1938). His books include: Negro Authors and Composers of the United States (1936), Father of the Blues (1941), and Unsung American Sung (1944).

Substantial archive of genealogical materials, including handwritten notes, letters, charts, etc., lots of ephemera, articles, documents, photographs, computer printouts and disks, family trees, etc. etc. FOUR 3 RING BINDERS STUFFED with MATERIAL, plus two books, one on Early Fairchild Families and one on Lauderdale County, Mississippi. From the Estate of MAMIE WALTERS late of Crockett, California, b. 1947 d. 2018, who clearly was the gatherer, writer, and compiler of the materials. Appears to have been gathered and written by Mamie Walters for a book she hoped to publish on the WALTERS and related families. Much of the material seems to have been gathered and written in the 2000s, up until her death in 2018. What I can glean from the material is that her main genealogical roots are WALTERS and FAIRCHILD, and that her early roots include Mississippi, among other places. The materials are all either 3 hole punched and in the rings of the binder, or stuffed loosely into the binders. All are clean and legible though in various states of handling, showing creases and use. The two books have relevant handwritten notes and marks. A jumbled treasure of genealogy. Have Fun!!! ******Illan Palat was born on April 10, 1924, in Ukraine. When he was three, his family had their property confiscated and was forced to move to the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. They lived and worked in Birofeld, a local kolkhoz, until Palat's father learned accounting and relocated his family to Birobidzhan. Palat was drafted in October 1942, underwent infantry training, and was sent to the front. His first combat experience was in the Battle of Kursk, where he fought on the front line in a 45mm anti-tank artillery unit. The battles were brutal, and Palat's unit suffered heavy losses. There were intermittent shortages of food and water, but there was also a strong sense of camaraderie among all soldiers, regardless of their backgrounds. In late 1943, Palat was severely wounded in the leg; he was saved by another solider, who carried him off the battlefield and into a local house. After eight months of hospitalization and multiple surgeries, Palat returned to Birobidzhan on crutches. Of the forty-three young men who were drafted from Birobidzhan with him, only two would come back. After demobilization, Palat worked as a watchmaker in Birobidzhan, until doctors advised him to move to a warmer climate because of his wound. In 1947, Palat moved to Tbilisi, Georgia, where he worked in construction. In 1977, he moved to United States and lived in New York and San Francisco. In addition to working as a contractor, he wrote the books A SOLDIER FROM BIROBIDZHAN and THE WAR AND THE HOLOCAUST.******

Contains lots of monetary disbursements, sales and purchases of various stocks and bonds (including lots of Cyanamid Corp), dividends, etc. Dated, where signed by the Washburns, March and April 1936. VERY GOOD condition, some creasing to the edges of the covers, signs of handling to the pages, otherwise a solid document with printing that is bright, clean, clear and fully legible. (2) ESTATE of IRENE RUSSELL WASHBURN. Carbon Copy of a Professional Valuation of the Personal Property of Irene Russell Washburn, taken after her death, and dated January 1957. This piece by piece valuation was undertaken by a Professional Auctioneer retained by the Guaranty Trust Company of New York. 12 pages, carbons, 11x16 inch paper, stapled at the top. The personal property is in sections by room, i.e. LIVING ROOM, KITCHEN, UPSTAIRS FOYER, and sometimes by category, i.e. STERLING SILVER. Only FAIR condition, the paper has browned, some of the carbon typescript is blurred and hard to read, the pages are all tearing and chipping at the bottom blank margin and some at the top margin as well, there are relevant handwritten notes and marks throughout, there are numerous folds where this has been folded into a small size. Nonetheless a complete and interesting inventory valuation of the entire personal property of Irene Russell Washburn at the time of her death in 1957. Published by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco on the occasion of the exhibition that took place at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, June 10 - September 3, 2000, then traveled to other museums.

PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPH of the WELLESLEY COLLEGE CLASS of 1964. Hundreds of Wellesley women. NO MEN.

Approximately 7x27 inches. Mounted in a wooden, glass fronted frame.

The photograph is in VERY GOOD condition - bright, sharp, clear, lovely. The wooden frame is solid, but please be cognizant of the sharp metal points on the backside that are holding the cardboard backing tight in the frame. The cardboard backing has the name "Mrs. W. S. (Rowe?)" written in pencil.

Your job is to find COKIE ROBERTS in the photograph! She was in the Wellesley Class of '64 so I assume she is in the photo somewhere. Also note the very few instances of diversity (no need for Affirmative Action, right Supreme Court?!!!)

A wonderful female time capsule from 1964.

Their signatures are next to the printed statement "A YOLLA BOLLY PRESS BOOK". Carolyn and James Robertson founded and ran the Yolla Bolly Press, Covelo, Mendocino County, California. James Robertson died in 2001. I believe Carolyn Robertson is still involved with the Press.

Softcovers, 8.5x12 inches, ILLUSTRATED with 37 COLOR PLATES sandwiched between a few prelim text pages and the 24 page afterword by Laughlin. Each of the color plates is printed on its own leaf (i.e. blank backsides).

VERY GOOD condition, the covers have some light toning to the spine and margins, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. An attractive, very presentable copy.

SCARCE with the SIGNATURES of Miriam PATCHEN (b.1914 d.2000), James LAUGHLIN (b.1914 d.1997), Carolyn ROBERTSON, and James ROBERTSON (d.2001).

GOOD condition, there is a crease to the bottom front corner of the book, leaving a crease to that corner of the covers and inner pages; there is some edge and spine end wear; otherwise just lightly used, the spine is smooth, the pages are tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

The Little, Brown & Company Advance Reading Copy / Uncorrected Proof of this book is hard to find.

The book is GREAT, the movie is mediocre.
