FINE Condition: tight, bright, clean and unmarked, as new. Shrink wrap partially removed from slipcase which has a few light shipping dings to the front edge.

Sir Keith Thomas's magnum opus is the foundational text for the study of early modern witchcraft during the English Renaissance. A monumental historical monograph that examines the complicated relationship between the supernatural and christianity. In the beginning of the 1500s magic pervaded society. Religious faith, prayer and prophecies were magical. Outside the church magical power reigned in the healing arts, in astrology and alchemy, in the knowledge that ghosts, fairies, omens, spirits, and the devil exist, and in the obsession with witchcraft. Nothing happened by accident. Evil had to be willed. The air was full of demons who controlled everything, easily summoned by a malevolent witch. But by the time Sir Isaac Newton dropped that gravitational apple science was ascendant and most of the witches had been burned.

About Women in the Marines during the Korean War (from the USMC website):

"In 1950, fewer than five years after World War II ended, the United States found itself once again confronted by a war for which it was unprepared. As before, a downsized military establishment rushed to call up, draft and recruit manpower, but recruitment numbers fell short of military requirements.

And just as in previous wars, the services turned again to American women, asking them to leave their homes, jobs and families to serve their country.

In March 1950, at the beginning of the Korean war, there were only 28 regular officer and 496 regular enlisted women Marines.By June 1950, the women Marines were authorized to comprise 100 officers, 10 warrant officers and 1,000 enlistees. Officers were trained at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, while enlisted women were trained at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina."

The back page shows a b&w photo of LBJ and a Message of Support in his new role as President of the United States sent to him by union leader David Dubinsky.

Founded in 1900, ILGWU was one of the largest and most significant labor unions in the American Labor Movement and one of the first with a primarily female membership. It's role in the history of women and immigrant Jewish and Italian women continues to be relevant today. Justice was published in English, Italian, Spanish, and Yiddish with much variation in content.

***** About the ILGWU from the Kheel Center for Labor Management Documentation and Archives Cornell University Library:

The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union was founded in New York City in 1900 by mostly Socialist immigrant workers who sought to unite the various crafts in the growing women's garment industry. The union soon reflected changes in the sector and rapidly organized thousands of unskilled and semi-skilled women, mostly Jewish and Italian young immigrants. Exemplifying the "new unionism," the ILGWU led two of the most widespread and best-known industrial strikes of the early Twentieth Century: the shirtwaist makers' strike of 1909 in New York City and the cloak makers' strike of 1910 in Chicago. The union also tried to adapt to the fragmented and unstable nature of the industry. It adopted the "protocol of peace," a system of industrial relations that attempted to ensure stability and limit strikes and production disruption by providing for an arbitration system to resolve disputes.

The ILGWU exemplified the European-style social unionism of its founding members. They pursued bread and butter issues but provided educational opportunities, benefits, and social programs to union members as well. In 1919, the ILGWU became the first American union to negotiate an unemployment compensation fund that was contributed to by its employers. The ILGWU also pioneered in the establishment of an extremely progressive health care program for its members which included not only regional Union Health Centers but also a resort for union workers, known as Unity House. The Union also had an imaginative and pioneering Education Department which not only trained workers in traditional union techniques, but provided courses in citizenship and the English language.

About THE RHYMERS' CLUB (from Wikipedia):

******The Rhymers' Club, founded in 1890 by W. B. Yeats and Ernest Rhys, was a gathering of some of London's most distinctive poets, who met at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese public house, off Fleet Street, and in the Domino Room of the Café Royal, to drink and read aloud each other's work.

The Rhymers' Club published two volumes of verse. The first, entitled The Book of the Rhymers' Club was published by Elkin Mathews in 1892. The Second Book of the Rhymers' Club appeared two years later in 1894, published by the recently merged Elkin Mathews and John Lane Publishers. They had print runs of 450 and 650 respectively. Those of the group appearing in these two volumes included: William Butler Yeats, T.W. Rolleston, John Todhunter, Richard Le Gallienne, Lionel Johnson, Arthur Cecil Hillier, Ernest Dowson, Victor Plarr, Ernest Radford, Arthur Symons, G.A. Greene, Edwin J. Ellis, and Ernest Rhys.

The Rhymers' Club stopped meeting in 1895.

Yeats later in his autobiography Yeats sought to mythologize the collective, calling it the "Tragic Generation" whose members were destined for failure and, in many cases, early death.******

Bonhams is to display lost masterpieces from a private collection by Gutai and ZERO groups for the first time since the 1960s. It offers an opportunity to reassess these ground breaking art movements, both of which have recently been in the spotlight in exhibitions such as Zero: Countdown to Tomorrow at The Guggenheim, New York. Writing about the groups for Bonhams Magazine, Serpentine Co-Director, Hans Ulrich Obrist described the emergence of these artists as one of the great moments of the avant garde in the post war era.

Bonhams Head of Contemporary Art, Ralph Taylor, says, "To have the opportunity to host this museum quality collection at Bonhams is a rare and wonderful privilege. It is exactly where Bonhams excels; demonstrating connoisseurship and using the profile of an auction house to rediscover forgotten masterpieces and to champion the very best in Post War & Contemporary art."

Among the works to be on view in Bonhams headquarters on New Bond Street are: Three works from Yayoi Kusama's first solo European show in 1965: Macaroni Shirt, Red Dots and Phallic Bottle Tray; Kazuo Shiraga's Red Fan; A suite of four early and delicate works by Jan Schoonhoven; A large piece by Günther Uecker from 1967.

The first time ZERO and Gutai art were shown together was at the 1965 Stedelijk Museum's Nul exhibition. In 2006, this Nul 1965 show was reconstructed in the ZERO exhibition at Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf. This was the beginning of the revival in both ZERO and Gutai we have witnessed today.******
