There are a few HAND CORRECTIONS by COOPER. There is a margin note and text correction on page 23, specifically "have already mentioned" is lined out at the end of page 23 and the beginning of page 24, and "shall assign in the notes" is handwritten in the bottom margin of page 23; also on page 23 "or" is changed to "of" and "are" is changed to "is"; the name "Accum" is lined out on page 88 (likely the French chemist Friedrich Accum); and the word "ruttlandis" is lined out and replaced with the handwritten correct spelling "rutilandis".

Hardcovers, marbled-paper covered boards, leather spine and corners, 5.5x8.5 inches (13x21.5 cm), viii, 236 pages, plus 2 front and 2 rear blank leaves.

Condition: The front and rear covers are present but disbound (i.e. laid on loosely), the spine leather is cracked, faded and worn but is still bound onto the text block except for 1/4 inch chipped off at the bottom, the spine lettering is mostly faded away but can be read upon close inspection. Internally, there is cockling and foxing throughout but the pages remain solid and the text is fully legible, the bottom corner of the leaf consisting of pages 107/108 is torn off, not affecting text, the inner hinge is starting to split at a few places but the binding is holding well, the ink inscription and corrections are oxidizing (see photos).

A RARE and IMPORTANT piece of AMERICANA.

    About Thomas Cooper (from Wikipedia):

******Thomas Cooper, b.1759 d.1839, was an Anglo-American economist, college president and political philosopher. Cooper was described by Thomas Jefferson as "one of the ablest men in America" and by John Adams as "a learned ingenious scientific and talented madcap." Dumas Malone stated that "modern scientific progress would have been impossible without the freedom of the mind which he championed throughout life." His ideas were taken very seriously.

In addition to Thomas Jefferson, he was friends with James Madison and several Governors of South Carolina. As a philosopher he was a follower of David Hartley, Erasmus Darwin, Priestley, and François-Joseph-Victor Broussais; he was a physiological materialist, and a severe critic of Scottish metaphysics.

Later in life, Cooper became an ardent and outspoken defender of slavery, and personally owned several slaves.******

    About CASPAR WISTAR (from Wikipedia):

******Caspar Wistar, b.1761 d.1818, was an American physician and anatomist. He was born in Philadelphia, the son of Richard Wistar and Sarah Wyatt. He was the grandson of Caspar Wistar, a German immigrant, Quaker and glassmaker.

Wistar was a friend of Thomas Jefferson, with whom he worked to identify bones of the megalonyx and through whom he tutored Meriwether Lewis, including recommendations for scientific inquiry on the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Wistar was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1803. In 1808 he was given the Chair of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania, which he retained until his death.

The Wistar Institute at UPenn was named in his honor.******

ERRATA SLIP tipped in at title-page. Illustrated with three plates including an illustrative floor plan of a brewery). The majority of the book is devoted to the production of beer, including recipes for different varieties. There is a small section on tanning at the rear.

CONDITION: The rear cover is disbound (present but laid on loosely), the front cover is hanging on by its sewn binding, the spine covering is lacking (i.e. the sewn binding and rear page edges are visible); the covers are soiled, have some shorelining, creases, chips and tears to the paper, etc; nonetheless the covers are original and present. Internally, there is foxing throughout, heaviest on the first and last few pages and a few other pages here and there, but otherwise rather mild; there is some shorelining to the bottom margin of the first few pages and to the upper area of the last few pages; one page has a closed tear across its face and another a 3 inch vertical tear starting at the bottom edge (neat tears, all text fully legible), and there are small tears, edge chips, edge wear, etc. here and there; otherwise the pages are bright, clean and clear, and the printing is sharp throughout.

JOSEPH COPPINGER initiated a correspondence with THOMAS JEFFERSON in 1802. In 1815 Coppinger sent Thomas Jefferson a letter and included a prospectus for the American Practical Brewer. Subsequently Thomas Jefferson wrote a number of letters to Coppinger inquiring about the book. The following is an extract from one of the 1815 Thomas Jefferson letters to Joseph Coppinger (published online by The National Archives):

"Monticello Apr. 25. 1815 // I am lately become a brewer for family use, having had the benefit of instruction to one of my people by an English brewer of the first order. I had noted the advertisement of your book in which the process of malting corn was promised & had engaged a bookseller to send it to me as soon as it should come out. We tried it here last fall with perfect success, and I shall use it principally hereafter. During the revolutionary war, the brewers on James river used Indian corn almost exclusively of all other. In my family brewing I have used wheat as we do not raise barley."

(The National Archives published four letters online from the correspondence between Joseph Coppinger and President Thomas Jefferson and two letters from the correspondence between Joseph Coppinger and President James Madison.)

About JOSEPH COPPINGER (extracted from The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Volume 38, published by Princeton, 2012; and the National Archives online):

*****Joseph Coppinger, emigrated from Harbour View, Ireland, to New York in 1802. He soon became a partner in the Point Brewery, Pittsburgh. In 1802 he initiated a correspondence with THOMAS JEFFERSON. In an "Address to the People of America" published in 1809, Coppinger praised Jefferson, calling him the "polar star," for his service to the country. In 1815, he wrote Thomas Jefferson soliciting support for the establishment of a national brewing company in Washington, D.C. and sent him a prospectus for a book he was writing entitled The American Practical Brewer and Tanner. Thomas Jefferson was very interested in the book and wrote to Coppinger repeatedly to inquire about the status of its publication.*****

    About LOUIS JURINE (from Wikipedia):

He studied surgery in Paris and quickly acquired a great reputation for his expertise in medicine and natural history. He taught courses in anatomy and surgery at the Société des Arts in Geneva and was made honorary professor of zoology at the Academy (today: University of Geneva). He also founded a maternity hospice in 1807 and was awarded prizes for his work on the gasses of the human body, artificial feeding of infants, and pectoral angina.

Upon learning of Spallanzani's experiments with bats, in which Spallanzani showed that bats do not rely on sight when navigating in darkness, Jurine conducted a series of experiments from which he concluded that bats use sound to navigate in darkness. If there is reason to believe that a murder or attempted murder may have been committed using poison, a forensic toxicologist is often engaged to examine pieces of evidence such as corpses and food items for poison content. In Orfila's time the primary type of poison in use was arsenic, but there were not any reliable ways of testing for its presence. PETER MORTIMER, b. 1750 d. 1828, was an English born Moravian organist, composer, conductor, and musicologist, who spent most of his life in Germany, in the Moravian settlements of eastern Saxony. In this work on the early church modes, or Gregorian modes, he explored the reasons for their superiority over the modern modes in the realm of choral music. Mortimer established that three modes governed Reformation chorale music, the hypodorian, hypophrygian (hypoionische), and hypomixolydian modes, and that the music had to be understood harmonically in that context. Considering the paucity of examples available to him at that time, Mortimer's musicological analysis was exceptionally astute, being fundamentally sound. (Eitner VII, 74-75; Kümmerle, Encyklopädie der evangelischen Kirchenmusik (1890) II:307-8).

A well used copy that is nonetheless complete and legible, with lots of great masonic occult imagery and musical scores.

GERMAN ROMANCE: Specimens of Its Chief Authors; with Biographical and Critical Notices by the Translator of Wilhelm Meister and the Author of The Life of Schiller (i.e. THOMAS CARLYLE). FOUR VOLUMES (Complete in These 4 Volumes). Edinburgh: William Tait, Prince's Street, and London: Charles Tait, Fleet Street, MDCCCXXVII (1827). FIRST EDITION. Original hardcovers, gray paper covered boards, brown paper covered spines, printed title information on spines, 5" x 8", 337, 317, 309 and 352 pages respectively.

Each Volume is complete with a half title and engraved title page. Early Thomas Carlyle book appearance, this was only his fourth work in book form. Carlyle greatly admired German writers and was instrumental in introducing them to the England through this, his 4 volume set of books. The four volumes are: Vol. I: Musaeus and Fouqué; Vol II: Tieck and Hoffman; Vol. III: Richter; and Vol. IV: Goethe (this 4 volume set is most renowned for this volume entirely on Goethe). All four Volumes were previously part of the CARLYLE COLLECTION of DR. SAMUEL A. JONES, with a decorative rubber stamp that states "CARLYLE COLLECTION

    / SAM'L A JONES" on the

front free endpaper of each volume, and a second such stamp on the front pastedown of the first volume. In addition, each volume is hand numbered according to its place in the collection.

The volumes are hand numbered 20, 21, 22 and 23, respectively. Dr. Samuel A. Jones was renowned collector of Thomas Carlyle. His entire collection was catalogued by the University of Michigan in 1919. The association gives this set a rather wonderful provenance. CONDITION: Volume I has a disbound front cover and is missing its spine covering. The spine covering of Volume II is almost completely chipped away, the spine coverings of Volumes III and IV are chipped, rubbed and worn, with the spine lettering only partially legible.

The covers of all 4 Volumes are worn at the edges, with most edges worn through, and the paper starting to peel away at a number of places. Volume I has a clipping from an old bookseller's catalogue pasted to the front pastedown. The clipping lists a similar set of Carlyle books for 1 pound 5 shillings. The bookseller was Alfred Russell Smith (Soho, London). Internally, there is foxing, offsetting, some spotting and some shorelining, mainly to the first and last few pages of each Volume, otherwise the inner pages are pretty nice - complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. SCARCE FIRST EDITION SET OF THIS IMPORTANT THOMAS CARLYLE WORK with a WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION to one of the most notable COLLECTOR'S OF CARLYLE.

Pagination as follows: blank leaf; half title page, printer information on verso; title page, blank verso; I-IV; Errata page, blank verso; ad for author's previous book, blank verso; 1-116 (text and index); blank leaf. This volume is from the library of SIR WILLIAM STIRLING-MAXWELL (b. 1818 d. 1878) 9th Baronet KT of Pollok, a historian, politician, and a renowned collector of books on proverbs. This book has his bookplate on the front pastedown and the bookplate of his Keir Collection of Books on Proverbs on the rear pastedown. This book is described by Stirling-Maxwell on page 10 of the book he wrote titled "An essay towards a collection of books relating to proverbs, emblems, apophthegms, epitaphs and ana, being a catalogue of those at Keir" (privately printed 1860). This book was Custom Bound for Sir William Stirling Maxwell by Maclehose, Glasgow. The binder's name is printed at the top of the front pastedown. This custom binding has Stirling's coat of arms and motto blind embossed on the front cover, and his monogram on the rear cover. A little research shows that William Stirling Maxwell used many different coats of arms and monograms on his bookplates and books over time. CONDITION: THE FRONT COVER IS DETACHED (i.e. laid on loosely), the covers are worn at the folds, corners and edges, the rear hinge is split but the rear cover is holding by the sewn binding; internally, there is foxing throughout but the pages and printing remain bright and clear; there is wear and roughness to some of the bottom page edges, possibly from being cut open roughly, not affecting text, there is a small silver bookstore label of LILLIPUT BOOKS / TOKYO on the rear pastedown with a price of 84,000 yen, equal to $758 as I type this (Lilliput Books, Tokyo, was the first bookstore in the world dedicated exclusively to miniature books, it closed in 2015). Overall, a quite nice copy with a detached front cover. RARE BOOK (WorldCat shows only one copy of this title, and that copy is held at

the Bibliothèque Nationale de France / the National Library of France), made ESPECIALLY RARE with the CUSTOM BINDING and BOOKPLATES of the proverb collector WILLIAM STIRLING MAXWELL. About William Stirling Maxwell (from Wikipedia): ******Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Baronet KT, of Pollok (8 March 1818 - 15 January 1878), was a Scottish historical writer and art historian, politician, and virtuoso. UNTIL 1865 HE WAS KNOWN AS WILLIAM STIRLING, and several of his books were published under that name. He was Chancellor of the University of Glasgow from 1875 until his death and was also a Knight of the Thistle, considered the highest honour which can be conferred by the Crown on a Scotsman.******

Rare booklet of Pierre Prévost (1751-1839), physicist and philosopher of Geneva, recognized in the field of science for his contribution to the theory of heat exchange (he explained Pictet's experiment by arguing that all bodies radiate heat, no matter how hot or cold they are). He was also a renowned Hellenist, who, among other things, contributed a translation of Euripides. Early on he held the chair of literature at the University of Geneva. In 1786 he became politically active and was a member of the Council of Two Hundred. In 1793 he was appointed to the Chair of Philosophy and General Physics at the University of Geneva, a position he held until 1823. In this booklet, MÉMOIRE SUR UNE APPARENCE DOUTEUSE DE MIRAGE, Prévost explains the scientific causes for visual appearances that seem real but are not (i.e. mirages). It is known that Prévost

himself suffered from mirages, which he considered a type of visual affectation.
