Harcovers, leather covered spine and blue cloth covered boards, the covers have blind stamped framing with corner designs, the front cover also has silver embossed titles; large format 9x13 inches oblong (23x33 cm). Pagination: [1] front free endpaper, [1] title page, [1] introductory page, 1-169 PHOTOTYPED PHOTOGRAPHIC ILLUSTRATIONS - each printed on its own leaf, [1] rear free endpaper.

A comprehensive photographic record of where Spain bred, healed and prepared horses for use in the Spanish-American War. Locations were primarily in autonomous regions in or near Andalucia, including: Jerez; La Rambla, Barcelona; Baeza; Valladolid; Zaragoza; Trujillo; Ubeda; Cordoba; and Moron.

During the Spanish-American War, Spanish soldiers primarily rode horses of Spanish origin, mostly Andalusian horses, which were renowned for their agility, endurance, and temperament, giving them a significant advantage in battle against American forces who may have had less experience with such horses; these Spanish horses played a key role in the cavalry operations of the Spanish military throughout the conflict, most notably in CUBA.

GOOD condition: The covers have some wear to the edges, spine folds and spine, including some indents and scrapes; the cloth covered boards have some light marks and shelf rubs; there has been some professional restoration to the corners, overall the covers are sturdy and attractive. Internally, the inner hinges have been professionally repaired, the pages have some toning especially to the margins, there are a few spots and smudges here and there, otherwise the inner pages are tight, bright and clear. A solid, nicely presentable copy.

Quite a rare, historic document. OCLC shows only one library worldwide with a copy, in Galicia, Spain. Horse remounting - the end of an era.

******Emanuel "Manuel" Sarkisyanz, b.1923 d.2015, was a political scientist, historian, and Southeast Asian studies scholar. He held a professorship at the University of Heidelberg.

Sarkisyanz, born in Azerbaijan, grew up as an ethnic Armenian in Iran. He studied at the University of Tehran, the Asia Institute in New York, and the University of Chicago. In 1952 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

In 1967 he became full professor of political science at the South Asia Institute at the University of Heidelberg. He was a member of the American Historical Association, the German Oriental Society, and the Association for Academic Freedom, and from 1959 a Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation.******

Three Ring Binder filled with Handwritten Notes and Official Record Sheets on Mares Bred (Pacific Coast Quarter Horses) during 1965 and 1966. Horse names include: BLUE CACTUS, Jesse Bar, BLUE LEDGER, Blue Miller, BOLD MINUTE, (Copay?) Coleen, CAT SOX, and many many MORE. For each horse, or perhaps for each time a mare is bred, there is a page with some handwritten notes followed by what appears to be an official page filled with small boxes with handwritten code letters in many of the boxes (I assume breeders know what the code letters stand for). Approximately 150 - 200 total sheets, meaning 75-100 pages of notes with 75-100 official sheets with handwritten letter codes. There is no definitive information on the binder's owner, perhaps RUSSELL SMITH because there is a personal letter (apparently unrelated to horse breeding) laid-in the front on his letterhead which reads: "Russell Smith / R-S / Registered Quarter Horses / Paicines, California." Russell Smith was actively involved in the PCQHA, so it would make sense that the binder was his. However, the letter is dated 1955 and the horse information is from 1965-1966, so... GOOD condition, some of the pages have pulled away from the 3 rings and are torn at the holes, but they remain in their proper order; otherwise the pages are bright, clean, clear and fully legible.
