Timely Typography's original typefaces helped to define San Francisco's iconic counterculture graphic design and greatly influenced psychedelic poster art.

Timely Typography was a prominent San Francisco mid century type foundry and typesetting house. They provided professional typesetting services and type specimens to local advertising agencies and specialized in custom type designs for graphic designers, print shops, top ad agencies and publishers across the Bay Area. They produced specimen catalogues and even created their own proprietary dry transfer lettering system called Modi-Film, a unique local alternative to London based Letraset. Timely was at its peak in the 1960s and early 1970s making the transition from metal type to photo typesetting, but computer technology was growing and agencies began doing their typography in house leading Timely to shutter.

Published by Chez l'Auteur Rue du Lycée M.on de l'Athénée N° 2, Pres le Palais Tribunat. Paris, n.d. circa 1806-1810, first editions. Two volumes, printed terracotta pink wrappers, 9" x 13.75", complete with a total of 31 copper engraved plates on watermarked laid paper including title pages, advertisements and 27 plates with decorative letterforms, volume 1: [2 leaves] 14 numbered pages; volume 2: [2 leaves] 13 numbered pages. VERY GOOD Condition: spines perished, gatherings loosened but holding, small oval German library ink stamp to front covers and title page versos, a few pencil marks, light edge chipping to covers, author's signature stamp to title pages, internally excellent. Scarce, only two copies in OCLC collections worldwide, both volumes found together at the Bibliothèque National de France, and just volume 2 at the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art, Paris.

Early French Empire typography was influenced by new styles of ornamental handwriting and their engraved reproductions. The engraved decorative letterforms (chiffres) that fill these two volumes include ornate monograms with lavishly curved scripts, ciphers, and rococo lettering with thinly sculpted lines. These books were used by artists, artisans, calligraphers, goldsmiths, and stamp carvers for their wealthy clients. Personalized ciphers, decorative letterforms, monograms and heraldic initials were major status symbols in 19th century France. During the Empire and Bourbon Restoration periods they were used to elevate ordinary possessions into extensions of identity. For the French elite, these bespoke interlaced initials were stamped onto stationery, silver, and wax seals, clearly broadcasting lineage and social standing in a rapidly shifting societal landscape.

H. Desnoyers (Auguste Gaspard Louis Hilaire Boucher Desnoyers; Baron Boucher Desnoyers) (French, 1779-1857) Born in Paris, he became one of the foremost engravers of his era, given the title of Baron and favored by the courts of Napoleon and Louis XVIII. He was the official draftsman and engraver of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (brother of Napoleon I), who became King of Holland in 1806.

In 1806, Napoleon appointed his brother, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, King of Holland. A short lived tactical decision which did not go according to plan. In 1810 Napoleon forced his brother to abdicate and annexed Holland to the kingdom of France. Louis was the Netherlands' first king, and it would be five years until they found another when William of Orange Nassau declared himself King of Holland in 1815, in direct response to Napoleon's return from Elba and the impending threat that reached its bloody climax at Waterloo.

This appears to be a smaller paper bound issue from the original publisher using a cut down version of the original dustjacket as the wrapper, with the same architectural plans. A seminal book of small house plans and designs by famed Southern California architect Paul R. Williams. Very Good Condition: spots of foxing to the covers, title page and inside front cover has off-setting from laid-in paper, otherwise, tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

Paul Revere Williams, FAIA (1894-1980) Legendary, trailblazing Black architect known as the "Architect to the Stars." Over his 50 year career, he designed more than 3,000 buildings, primarily in Southern California, and broke monumental racial barriers in the field of architecture. He designed the homes of numerous celebrities, such as Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Lon Chaney, Barbara Stanwyck, and Charles Correll. He also designed many commercial, institutional and civic buildings.

ALAMEDA COUNTY SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTS 1916. An Exhibition of Alameda Architecture designed by members of the Society. Includes buildings, schools, homes, etc. Architects include W.H. Ratcliff, C.W. Dickey, Julia Morgan, John Galen Howard, William Knowles, and others. The exhibition took place at the Oakland Civic Center in 1916.

Hardcovers, paper covered boards, gilt embossed title to the front cover, 8x10.5 inches, 126 pages, 58 of which contain photographs of Alameda buildings and the names of the architects who designed them. There is a section of ads at the rear from sponsors of the exhibition, most relating to the building trade.

GOOD condition: The covers are toned at the margins and spine, the front spine fold has a 4 inch thin split starting at its top edge, and there are a few small edge nicks, otherwise the covers are doing their job well. Internally, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A solid, presentable copy.

A SCARCE look at the ARCHITECTURE of ALAMEDA COUNTY a la 1916.

Original working 1936 Blueprint Technical Drawing Plan of the Berkeley Aquatic Park and Adjacent Improvements, issued by the City of Berkeley Department of Public Works, Harry Goodridge City Engineer, Plan No. 1640. Scale is 1 inch = 100 feet. This is not the final plan, it is a late stage working plan with Drawer 21 printed in the margins. The blueprint is printed with purple ink on yellow ground, the verso is white and the size is 83.5" inches long by 19.5" inches wide. CONDITION: folded in half lengthwise, then folded 10 times down to a manageable 8" x 10" inches, there are relevant penciled additions, toning at the the folds, some tearing at the centerfold where the folds intersect, signs of light use and wear, and some edge tears, otherwise a legible solid copy of this rare early Berkeley Aquatic Park Plan.

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) built the mile long, 100 plus acre Berkeley Aquatic Park on the bay front south of University Avenue between 1935 and 1937. It was created along with the Berkeley Yacht Harbor in a waterfront makeover and was used as a water park for water sports, canoeing, sculling and model yacht racing, the lagoon was largely protected from the wind and offered a unique marine environment for human and sea life. The Park's 1937 opening celebration was called "The Pageant of Land and Sea" and the festivities were shared with The Berkeley Yacht Harbor. The park lies between the freeway (Interstate 80) and the former Southern Pacific Railroad tracks (now Union Pacific). Tidal gates under the freeway keep the water level constant and refresh the basin with water from San Francisco Bay. The aquatic park project grew out of the Eastshore Highway, a feeder road for the new San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, which created a causeway/barrier farther out in the Bay. When the park was built, the lagoon was connected to the San Francisco Bay by eight 24 inch diameter clay and concrete tide tubes running under the highway that allow a regular cleansing action between ocean and inland waters. Aquatic Park and the Bay Shore Freeway (Interstate 80) remain lasting results of the WPA and served to define both West Berkeley's physical boundary and link it to the port cities of Oakland and Richmond.

CHAN RADER ASSOCIATES 1961-1975

Published by Chan Radar Associates, San Francisco, California, June 1975. First edition. White card wrappers with raised title on the front cover, 11" x 8.5", 64 pages. A record of their work, filled with architectural drawings, plans and black and white photographs of their projects. VERY GOOD CONDITION: tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Scarce, only 3 copies in OCLC collections worldwide.

In 1961, Lun Chan and his colleague Morton Rader, founded Chan/Rader and Associates in San Francisco. In addition to large-scale projects, they designed many Chinese restaurants which were influenced by Lun Chan. They designed the famous Mandarin Restaurant in Ghirardelli Square (1968) and Beverly Hills (1975), and many Polynesian themed Trader Vic's Restaurants and Señor Pico Restaurants in the 1960s and 1970s. The first Trader Vic's Restaurant Chan designed was their headquarters in Emeryville, the Tiki design was originated by Hollywood set designers but expressed in built form by Chinese American architects like Chan who integrated Tiki culture into architectural practice and shaped Tiki style restaurants creating an era defining kitschy alternative to mainstream Modernism.

Pioneering Chinese American architect Lun Chan (1927-2011) was born in San Francisco to a traveling herbalist, he studied architecture at UC Berkeley and joined with Morton Rader (1926-1978) to open their private practice in 1961. At the time, Chan could not open his own architecture firm and had to partner with a white architect. They took on projects ranging from campuses, healthcare facilities, restaurants, and residences. After Rader's death in 1978, the firm became Lun Chan Associates

Folio, hardbound in Publisher's textured brown cloth with embossed gilt printing on the front cover, 13.75" x 10.5" inches, brown endpapers, 70 un-numbered pages, richly illustrated with 20 architectural plates (one printed in color) printed on one side only, plus 17 pages of advertisements (including several printed in color, the final leaf being a full page color ad for Minton's floor tiles). GOOD CONDITION: Covers have edge, corner and spine-end wear, light bubbling/wear to the cloth, but remain solid and the gilt bright. Internally, hinges are tender but holding, some smudges in the margins from age/use, otherwise the inner pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Uncommon.

This separately issued supplement to Bicknell's Village Builder (1870) includes designs by Architects D. B. Provoost, T. Thompson, C. Graham & Son, C. T. Rathbone, Lyman Underwood and B. H. Brooks. The plates provide scaled drawings of elevations and floor plans and include the estimated costs to build the homes at 1870 prices!

Bolon was established in 1949 and is a third generation family owned Swedish design company that created woven vinyl flooring. Their products are designed and produced in Sweden and are quite expensive.

Published by Bolon AB, Ulricehamn, Sweden, no date, circa 1980s. Folded portfolio, paper covered heavy board, 12" x 8.75", metal front corner guards, folds open to 33" x 12", there are 54 different color samples pasted down, and 26 pages of technical data at the rear in English, German, French, and Spanish. The swatches range from 1.5" x 1.5" squares to 2.25" x 1.75" rectangles and two large 6.5" x 4.75" rectangles. VERY GOOD CONDITION: some small scrapes to the front cover, silver label from Floor Designs, Inc., At Showplace Square, San Francisco on the rear cover, a few penciled notations otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Uncommon.

******Juan O'Gorman's most celebrated work due to its creativity, construction technique, and dimensions, are the four thousand square meters murals covering the four faces of the building of the Central Library at Ciudad Universitaria at UNAM. Flexible card covers with illustrated dustjacket, large format, 10x14 inches (26x35 cm), 32 pages of b&w photographs +13 pages of text in Japanese. Laid in is a flyer in English that briefly describes the Taima-Ji Temple and each of the photographic plates in the book.

Condition: GOOD book, toning to the cover's margins, some creasing to the upper spine corner, otherwise tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked; in a GOOD dustjacket that has toning to the spine and spine margins, a 4 inch closed tear to the back panel starting at the top edge (repaired on the blank backside with clear tape), and some quarter size remnants of thin plastic adhesive on the backside (probably from an old dj protector), else the dj is solid, attractive, and doing its job well.

A presentable copy of this scarce photographic study of the Taima-Ji Buddhist Temple.

Yoshio Watanabe, b.1907 d.2000, was a noted Japanese photographer of architecture.

The purpose of the Northern Waterfront Plan is to guide future development in all areas on and contiguous to the harbor in a manner consistent with the interests of San Francisco. GOOD condition, the covers are rubbed and scraped but still solid and doing their job well, there is some wear and a small hole to the front free endpaper, some of the inner hinges are cracked and a bit weak but still holding (this book is known for its weak glue binding), otherwise the inner pages are bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

This is the plan that guided the transformation of San Francisco's Northern Waterfront from the ugly, elevated freeway, desolate area that it was, into the techie mecca of expensive lofts, sailboats, and foodie playgrounds, that it is today.
