Each issue came with a thin glassine overwrap, these have been removed from about half of the issues.

ILLUSTRATED with PLATES, including one tipped in color plate at the beginning of each issue.

Text in JAPANESE, but the rear wrapper of each issue gives a brief English description of the plates within.

These copies were presented "With the Compliments of PROFESSOR YUKIO YASHIRO", with his presentation card laid on top of the first issue. (Yukio Yashiro, b.1890 d.1975, was a Japanese academic, art historian, Botticelli scholar and Director of the Institute for Art Research in Tokyo. - Wikipedia.)

GOOD Condition: The glassine overwrap was removed from about half the issues, the glassine on the other issues has yellowed with age (it can easily be removed if desired); the spines have some wear and chipping; there is light dampstaining to the wrappers and on some of the inner pages of a few issues; overall the issues remain tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. Internally, there is worming throughout, heaviest at the gutter area and the bottom margin, but also with worm holes and long worm lines on the face of some pages; nonetheless the pages are quite legible (except maybe some characters) and the drawings and printing are sharp and clear.

An original 1712 volume of the Wankan Sansai Zue.

About WAKAN SANSAI ZUE (from Wikipedia)

******The Wakan Sansai Zue (Illustrated Sino-Japanese Encyclopedia) is an illustrated Japanese leishu encyclopedia published in 1712 in the Edo period. It consists of 105 volumes in 81 books. Its compiler was Terashima or Terajima (Terajima Ryoan), a doctor from Osaka. It describes and illustrates various items and activities of daily life. As seen from the title of the book (wa), which means Japan and (kan), which means China), Terajima's idea was based on a Chinese encyclopedia, specifically the Ming work Sancai Tuhui ("Pictorial..." or "Illustrated Compendium of the Three Powers") by Wang Qi (1607), known in Japan as the Sansai Zue. Reproductions of the Wakan Sansai Zue are still in print in Japan.******

About ROBERT M. HARTWELL, b. 1932 d. 1995 (from a Harvard University website): ******From the beginning of his career at the University of Chicago and continuing during his tenure at professor of Chinese history at the University of Pennsylvania and into his retirement in Wyoming, the late Robert M. Hartwell was intensely concerned with the study of social and economic change in Chinese history. Working mainly with middle-period sources (mid-Tang into Yuan), he produced a number of unusually helpful research aids and a series of influential research articles. Readers of Hartwell's work will immediately notice that his research involved the citation of an unusually large number of sources on any given point and the collection of a considerable body of supporting data. Hartwell preferred to rely upon the preponderance of evidence; he rarely argued from the isolated example. He was in fact devoted to the collection of large sets of data and, finding a lack of this kind of research in the scholarly literature, he set out to create a body of extensive data sets himself. By the mid-1970s he had defined a program to amass the most extensive prosopographical data set ever created for the study of Chinese history for any period, and he continued his work with the help of students and especially his wife and collaborator Marianne Carlson Hartwell until his untimely death in 1995. The Hartwells willed their estate to the Harvard-Yenching Institute, in the conviction that Harvard would see to the preservation and dissemination of their research.******
