The authors of these written "reports" are unstated. Many seem to be in the same hand. They are written in English.

The 60 signatures are on 4 pages with a "RAIVAAJA PUBLISHING COMPANY / FITCHBURG, MASS" letterhead, undated but likely c.1930. ("Raivaaja was a Finnish-language newspaper published from 1905 to 2009 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, by Raivaaja Publishing Company. For the first three decades of its existence the publication was closely associated with the Socialist Party of America." - Wikipedia)

Did these handwritten reports come from a Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Finnish Labor Society time capsule??? Maybe. There is a typed page, in Finnish, on "Finnish Labor Society SAIMA" letterhead dated 1933 that precedes the rest of the pages in the binder, which states (translated by Google):

******"That part of the Finnish people, who in the storms of time moved to this city of Fitchburg, during the last decades, would like to preserve for posterity some incidents from their phase-rich journey. As can be seen from the contents of the box, they were Finnish migrants, mostly young men and women who hoped that on this continent they would be able to partake of the warmer sunshine of a happy day than in the country of their birth. However, hard work was a condition of livelihood here as well, and that is why many of them became attached to the labor movement, whose struggles are described in detail in the various reports herein.

The box will be buried in the ground on Thursday evening, May 11, 1933, in a place known as Saima Park. Naturally no one knows when it will be found, but it is supposed to remain in the ground for several generations and after emerging will be solid material from the past for researchers of the Labor cause. In Fitchburg, Massachusetts, May 11, 1933. / Lauri Moilanen / Saima scribe of the Finnish Workers' Association."******

Each of the manuscript pages, the signature pages, and the "time capsule" page, are in plastic sleeves and collected in a three ring binder.

Condition: The signature pages and the "time capsule" page all have rust stains at the top, likely from metal clips or pins. The manuscript pages are all in remarkably good condition, bright, clean and clear. Like they've been archivally stored in a time capsule or something!

About the FINNISH SOCIALIST FEDERATION (from the University of Minnesota Libraries website:

******"The Saima Workers' Society of Fitchburg, Mass. was founded in 1894 as a Finnish workers' organization. In 1905, it joined the Socialist Party, thus making it the oldest Finnish Socialist chapter in the United States. In 1906, it joined the Finnish Socialist Federation, and by 1924-1925 was the largest such chapter in the country, with over five hundred members.*****

SCARCE and IMPORTANT WORK by the CHINESE / HONG KONG ARTIST ONG SCHAN TCHOW. This book almost never comes up for sale, the last copy I am aware of was incomplete - missing plates.

About ONG SCHAN TCHOW (from Wikipedia):

******Ong Schan Tchow, b.1900 d.1945, was born in the Longyan prefecture, Southern Fujian Province, China. He was known for Chinese ink wash painting, color paintings of flowers (Chrysanthemums in particular), and Calligraphy. He was one of the first Chinese artists to study in Paris and one of the early artists to integrate traditional Chinese and Western art techniques,

In Paris, Ong studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In addition, he obtained a Master of Arts in Law, French and Political Science from the University of Paris.

In Nanjing Ong produced one of his MONUMENTAL WORKS - a compilation of paintings of chrysanthemums with accompanying poems and commentary from well known persons. This compilation was succinctly called the "BOOK OF CHRYSANTHEMUMS" [and un-succinctly titled WATER-COLOUR PAINTINGS OF CHRYSANTHEMUMS AT DR. SUN'S MAUSOLEUM]. The book contained paintings of the vast variety of Chrysanthemums planted at the newly completed mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the "Father of Modern China", at Nanjing, the former Capital of China.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Professor Ong exhibited his works extensively and gave all the proceeds to the war relief effort. The war destroyed many of his paintings but he managed to salvage some important works. The advancing Japanese army forced him to move his exhibitions to Hong Kong and later to Singapore and Malaysia.

Ong died in 1945, at the age of 45, while exhibiting his works in Ipoh, Malaysia. In the Annals of Longyan, Ong is considered one of her most famous citizens.******

The production of THE JAPANESE BOX was conceived of by printer Gerhard Steidl and fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld to celebrate the avant-garde of Japanese photography of the late 1960s and early 1970s. A vanguard of that movement was the publication of PROVOKE magazine by Takuma Nakahira in 1968.

Includes a select group of facsimile reprints of six rare photographic publications of the Japanese Provoke era, plus a descriptive introductory pamphlet by Schifferli. The publications are handsomely presented in a specially designed wooden box with metal clasps. The books inside the box are nested in black crepe paper, and there are two thick rubber bands, one with the printed words "The Japanese Box". The inside of the box's lid is a label with the limitation and printing information. The box set with its original cardboard shipping box.

From the Foreword: THE JAPANESE BOX presents six publications by a remarkable group of Japanese photographers and writers whose work was a response to the climate of political and moral unrest in Tokyo around 1968. The publications include three issues of PROVOKE (1968-1969) plus For A Language To Come by Takuma Nakahira (1970), Sentimental Journey by Nobuyoshi Araki (1971), and A Farewell To Photography by Daido Moriyama 1972).

VERY GOOD condition, just lightly used. The covers of some of the issues have a few scrapes and rubs, internally all are tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. The specially designed wooden box is excellent, the inner crepe paper remains intact, the thick rubber bands have split and are disintegrating with age, as rubber bands are wont to do.

After placing your order you will be notified of the additional charges and be able to accept or reject them before your payment is processed. COMES WITH A GUIDE / INDEX compiled by Eric Bott at the University of Hawaii under the supervision of Stephan and Patricia Polansky, and published by the Berlin State Library in 2004. The Guide provides the full table-of-contents for each of the 41 issues, and a comprehensive Index for all the issues. It has 73 photocopied pages printed on one side only, bound in clear vinyl covers. It is signed in German at the top of the first page "Schöne Grüße / (??)".

CONDITION: The issues are in GOOD to GOOD MINUS condition, the covers have soiling, scrapes and wear to the spines, and some tender spine folds; some of the early and latter signatures are pulling from the staples but holding; some of the pages have edgewear and edge flakiness; otherwise the issues are complete with pages that are lightly toned at the margins and still bright, clean and unmarked. The exception is the last issue, V.8 N.6, which has disbound covers, light shorelining to the covers and pages, and general signs of wear, otherwise it too is complete. The Guide / Index is in Fine condition.

The Berlin State Library called The XXth Century "particularly remarkable because it is completely free of Nazi propaganda." Far from the truth.

A RARE COMPLETE RUN of Klaus Mehnert's Nazi backed, Shanghai published journal. The University of Hawaii holds one of the few complete runs of this influential publication.

About KLAUS MEHNERT and the XXTH CENTURY magazine (from Wikipedia and the University of Hawaii website):

******Born In Moscow in 1906, Mehnert's family left Russia in 1914. He received his PhD from the University of Berlin in 1928. Mehnert traveled frequently, to America, the Soviet Union, Japan, and China. He was fluent in Russian, German, and English. He married Enid Keyes (d.1955) in California in 1933, and in 1934 returned to the Soviet Union as an author and German newspaper reporter. In 1936 Goebbels ordered German newspapers to stop printing Mehnert's news reports, so he moved to America where he taught at UC Berkeley then at the University of Hawaii.

In June 1941, six months prior to America's entry to World War II, he left for Shanghai, China, where he published an English language journal The XXth Century with financing from the Nazi German Foreign Ministry and Joseph Goebbels' Third Reich Propaganda Ministry.

The XXth Century was an influential promoter of anti-Allied reports and commentary in Asia, The XXth Century was later described by American intelligence as "one of the slickest bits of propaganda work that has been done anywhere". In its four years, Menhert "steered his publication cunningly along a sophisticated path that eschewed overt pro-Axis advocacy", according to the British historian Bernard Wasserstein, with "a wide range of contributors, few of whom were publicly identified with Nazism". The journal was discontinued at the end of the war in 1945, and Mehnert was briefly imprisoned before returning to Germany.******

    About TSUNEKO NAKAZATO (from Wikipedia):

******Tsuneko Nakazato, b.1909 d.1987, was the pen name of a novelist in Showa period Japan. Her real name was Nakazato Tsune.

Nakazato was born in Fujisawa city, Kanagawa prefecture and graduated from the Kanagawa Girls' Higher School. When she was 17 years old she met Tatsuo Nagai and started writing, publishing multiple novellas before her marriage at age 19.

In 1938, Nakazato became the first woman to win the prestigious Akutagawa Prize, with her short story Noriai bashi. After World War II, she came to be known for a number of works addressing the issue of international marriage, including Mariannu monogatari (Maryann's Story, 1946) and Kusari (Chain, 1959), which were drawn from her own daughter's marriage to an American. Her novel Utamakura (Song Pillow, 1973) was awarded the Yomiuri Prize. In 1974, she received the Japan Art Academy Prize, and became a member of that institution in 1983.

Nakazato was a resident of Zushi, Kanagawa from 1932 until her death due to colon cancer in 1987. Her grave is at the temple of Engaku-ji in Kamakura.******

ASSOCIATION COPY: This set was previously owned by WINFIELD SCOTT WELLINGTON, b.1897 d.1979, with his bold and florid signature on the front pastedown of volumes 2-9. Wellington was a noted San Francisco Bay Area Architect, Museum Director, Artist, and Professor of Decorative Arts at UC Berkeley. He was also a noted collector of ceramics.

Each volume covers a different period in East-Asian Ceramic History:

    (1) Japan: Pre-Historic, Proto-Historic and Early Historic Periods. (2) Japan: Ceramics in the Nara to Muromachi Periods. (3) Japan: Ceramics in the Momoyama period. (4) Japan Ceramics in the Edo Period (part I).

    (5) Japan: Ceramics in the Edo period (part II). (6) The Edo period (part III). (7) Tea Ceremony Implements. (8) From Ancient China to Six Dynasties. (9) China: Sui and Tang Dynasties. (10) China: Sung and Liao Dynasties. (11) China: Yuan and Ming Dynasties. (12) China: Ch'ing Dynasty and Annamese and Thai Ceramics. (13) Korea: Pre-Koryo and Koryo Periods. (14) Korean Ceramics in the Li Dynasty.

Volumes 15 and 16 which ARE NOT part of this set, were the only volumes not related to East-Asian ceramics. Volume 15 is on the ceramics of "Europe & Others" and. Volume 16 is on Contemporary Ceramics (mainly non-Asian). As a collector of indigenous East-Asian ceramics perhaps this is why Professor Winfield Scott Wellington was not interested in those last two works.

CONDITION: Volume 1 is in GOOD condition: The back cover of has the ghost of a large sticker that was removed, the front and rear covers have some small stains, and there is a bump to the top of the spine; internally, there is some waviness to the bottom margin of the first few pages, and there are small rust stains and light offsetting to the rear endpapers from the laid-in English language booklet, otherwise the book is tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

VOLUMES 2-14 are in VERY GOOD condition, just a bit of soiling to some of the covers; tissue guards have been removed from most of the frontispieces, else tight, bright, clear, clean and unmarked.

ALL THE PLATES (1800+ in the 14 volume set) are brilliant.

A couple of the laid-in booklets are wavy, and a couple have pulled from their staples but are complete.

Considered to be one of the most extensive published works on East-Asian ceramics.

About WINFIELD SCOTT WELLINGTON (from the University of California "In Memoriam" website):
