You can read all about the amazing French bibliophile, writer and publisher OCTAVE UZANNE on his wikipedia page and many other places on the Internet.

Here is some information about the lesser known Minnesota bibliophile JAMES CARLETON YOUNG (from the Hennepin County Library website):

******James Carleton Young, b.1856 d.1918, was an internationally known Midwest American

book collector. He graduated with an M.A. from Cornell College in 1876, and in 1909 Cornell presented him with its first-ever Doctor of Literature degree. He became wealthy buying and selling mid-west real estate, and used almost all of it to acquire first edition books.

Young collected first editions of both contemporary and non-contemporary authors, often sending the contemporary books to their authors with a request that they inscribe them. In Europe Young was given the title "Le Roi des Livres". Young was named honorary commissioner to the Paris exposition of 1878, elected as one of the three foreign members to the Société Des Amis Des Livres in Paris, awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1910, made a Fellow to the Royal Geographical Society of London, and received awards from many other important European and American book clubs and societies. The books in his library ultimately numbered in the tens of thousands and required the services of a full-time librarian, bookkeeper, several assistants, catalogers, translators, and agents.

Mounting obstacles to his dream of keeping the collection together and eventually donating it to the Smithsonian forced him to allow it to be auctioned off in installments by the Anderson galleries in New York in 1916. Young took consolation that his books would "pass into the possession of my fellow collectors and enrich hundreds of public and private libraries." He ended up being much better known abroad than in America, and relatively unknown in Minneapolis.******

    About FRITZ EICHENBERG (from Wikipedia):

******Fritz Eichenberg b,1901 d.1990, was a German-American illustrator and arts educator who worked primarily in wood engraving. Eichenberg was born to a Jewish family in Cologne, Germany. In 1933 he fled the rise of the Nazis and emigrated with his wife and children to the United States, where he settled in New York City for most of the remainder of his life. He taught art at the New School for Social Research and the Pratt Institute and was part of the WPA's Federal Arts Project.

In his prolific career as a book illustrator, Eichenberg worked with many forms of literature but specialized in material with elements of spiritual and emotional conflict, illustrating such authors as Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Charlotte and Emily Brontë, Poe, Swift, and Grimmelshausen. He also wrote and illustrated books of folklore and children's stories.******

About LILI WRONKER, to whom the book was inscribed (from an online obituary):

******Lili Cassel Wronker, b.1924 d.2019, was born in Berlin, Germany. She and her family fled the Nazi regime and immigrated to the United States in 1940, settling in New York. She illustrated her first children's book, The Rainbow Mother Goose, in 1947. It was described by the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) as one of the "Fifty Best Books of the Year". She later taught calligraphy at the New School.

In 1952 she married Erich Wronker with whom she would later run a small private press from their home.

A typophile par excellence and in deep love with Judaism, Lili Wronker was a founding member of the Society of Scribes in New York. Her typographic work can be seen in hundreds of book jackets between the 1940s and 1960s. Her love of Judaism found artistic expression in her Hebrew calligraphy, which appeared in many fine art books and magazines.******

    About MARTIN STONE (from Wikipedia):

******Martin Stone (11 December 1946, Woking, Surrey - 9 November 2016, Versailles, France) was an English guitarist and rare book dealer. He was a resident of Fingest in Buckinghamshire and, later, of Paris.

Educated at Whitgift School, Stone initially wanted to be a journalist and began as a cub reporter on The Croydon Advertiser, interviewing Jimmy Page when he was still a session musician. Martin Stone played in many groups, including Junior's Blues Band, Stone's Masonry, Almost Presley, The Action, Savoy Brown Blues Band, Mighty Baby, Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers, Southern Comfort, The Pink Fairies, and The 101'ers. His last album, which he called his legacy album is LIVE FROM THE TERMINAL CAFE with Michael Moorcock and the Deep Fix (Cleopatra Records, Autumn 2019).

Subsequent to his musical efforts Stone achieved international notoriety as a bookscout. He is a major player in John Baxter's memoir A Pound of Paper: Confessions of a Book Addict. He is the subject of a limited edition book Martin Stone, Bookscout by the California rare bookseller Peter Howard of Serendipity Books. He appeared in the television documentary Without Walls: The Cardinal And The Corpse (Iain Sinclair / Chris Petit 1992). He is also known to be the basis for the character Nicholas Lane in Sinclair's novel White Chappell, Scarlett Tracings (1987).

About THE ASHENDENE PRESS (from Wikipedia):

******The Ashendene Press was a small private press founded by St John Hornby, b.1867 d.1946. It operated from 1895 to 1915 in Chelsea, London and was revived after the war in 1920. The press closed in 1935. Its peers included the Kelmscott Press and the Doves Press. These three presses were part of a "revival of fine printing" that focused on treating bookmaking as fine art. The Ashendene Press was famous for producing high quality works by Dante. Ashendene books were carefully printed with large margins, and despite their lack of extravagant decoration, they were considered spectacular works of art. Two original typefaces were created for the Ashendene Press: Subiaco and Ptolemy. The Press was also known for handwritten, colored initials by Graily Hewitt. The Press' main customers were fine book collectors.******

Contains 100 PRINTED SAMPLE PAGES with GORGEOUS ILLUSTRATIONS using various INKS, each sample printed on its own leaf.

Published jointly by the Ink Manufacturer GEORGE MORRILL COMPANY, Norwood, Massachusetts; and the Distributor NATIONAL PAPER & TYPE COMPANY, New York; undated but likely c.1920.

Hardcovers, cloth covered boards, printed titles and design on the front cover and devices of George H. Morrill Company and National Paper & Type Company on the rear cover, printed endpapers, 5.5x9.5 inches, 112 pages of which 100 are sample pages printed using various inks of George Morrill Co.

TEXT ENTIRELY IN SPANISH, including the captions of the sample pages, the introduction, etc.

There is a stamp on the front free endpaper that states: "Cataloga de Tintas de Imprenta, Numero 868", indicating this is copy #868 of an unstated limited edition.

GOOD Condition: The covers are worn through at the corner tips, rubbed at the edges, have some soiling, a few small stains, and the cloth hinge of the front cover has completely split but is holding. Internally, the front and rear inner hinges are split but holding, the endpapers have a couple spots, there are a few spots to the bottom of the first few plates, otherwise the inner pages and all the plates are tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

A wonderful look at printing inks used by publishers in South America, Mexico and the Caribbean in the early 1900s. Though English language Morrill printing ink catalogs are not difficult to find, Morrill Spanish catalogs aimed at South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean are quite scarce.

About GEORGE H. MORRILL COMPANY (from the Norwood Historical Society):

******George H. Morrill Company made ink for the printing industry. Founded in 1845 in Massachusetts by Samuel Morrill who invented and produced a superior ink compared to what had been on the market. The company grew rapidly, new products were added, and sales expanded. By the early 1900s they had offices in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Chicago. Their product line had grown as well. They started out making just black ink, around 1874 they began to make colored ink. By 1890, the company had enlarged its Norwood facilities to fourteen buildings. By 1910 it was said they were the largest producer of printing ink in the United States.******

About the CRANACH PRESS (from various Internet sources):

******The Cranach Press was founded by Count Harry Graf Kessler (1868-1937) with the undertaking to print the finest possible editions of the world's greatest literature in new and important German translations. Kessler employed print-men and illustrators of outstanding ability and produced some of the world's most beautiful books.

In 1913 Kessler commissioned Edward Gordon Craig, an English theatrical designer and theoretician, to make woodcut illustrations for a sumptuous edition of Shakespeare's Hamlet for the Cranach Press. A German translation by Gerhart Hauptmann, with illustrations by Craig, was finally published in Weimar in 1928. The English version, edited by J. Dover Wilson, came out in 1930. This book, printed on fine paper, using different type-faces, with marginal notes with source quotations, and featuring Craig's woodcuts, is regarded by many as one of the finest examples of the printer's art to have been published in the 20th century.******

About TENRI CENTRAL LIBRARY (from Wikipedia):

******Tenri Central Library is the library of Tenri University. It has notably extensive collections in antiquarian material, including original manuscripts from 13th century Japan, and artifacts of European exploration and early visits to Japan. Dating to 1926, the library predates the University itself. It has its origins in the private collection of the family of the foundress of Tenrikyo, Oyasama.

The library specializes in religion, Oriental studies, Near Eastern studies, anthropology, ethnology, topography, language, and Japanese literature. Among the valuable Japanese materials in its rare book collection are six volumes designated as national treasures (such as the Oyo Bunchuko Shu) and over seventy volumes designated as important cultural properties.******
