Copy of Edith and Bernhard Dohrmann of San Francisco, with their lovely bookplate on the front pastedown. A copy of the bookplate is held at the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts / Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. They describe it as "Anonymous (Netherlandish)".

Hardcover Book in Custom Slipcase, folio size 11x14.5 inches, 20 pages of text with in-text illustrations, followed by 36 TIPPED-IN COLOR PLATES each mounted on its own leaf (blank versos), all with tissue guards, each introduced by a separate leaf that states the plate number on the recto and describes the plate on the verso (the page facing the tipped-in plate). The Islamic bindings date from 9th and 10th century Egypt to 14th century Persia and Turkey. There are 4 final pages of text, including a Table of Contents.

The book is held in a solid, custom, folding case; burgundy cloth covered boards, gilt titles to the spine. Sturdy and quite lovely.

GOOD CONDITION: The front cover is bumped at its lower front corner, the inner hinges are cracked between signatures at a few places but always holding well, there are fingerprint size marks to the margins here and there; otherwise tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked, with gorgeous tipped in plates. An attractive, presentable copy, in a professionally made custom folding case that is in NEAR FINE condition.

The book is from the estate of SANDRA and MICHAEL GOOD. Sandra Good was a noted bookbinder and past President of the Hand Bookbinders of California. Michael Good was an antiquarian bookseller and one time President of the ABAA. Sandra Good did not write her name in the book. It is possible, even likely, that she made the custom folding case.

FIFTEEN BOOKS on FINE BOOKBINDING, BOOK MAKING and BOOK ARTS. From the estate of SANDRA and MICHAEL GOOD. Sandra Good, a noted bookbinder, was a past President of the Hand Bookbinders of California. Michael Good was an antiquarian bookseller and a one time President of the ABAA. Though the books in this lot are from the personal bookbinding collection of Sandra Good, she did not write her name in them.

VERY GOOD condition: The modern covers are FINE. Internally, there is a "University of California" blindstamp on the title page and first page of text, and a "Withdrawn" ink stamp on the verso of the title page; but these are the only ex-libris indications I found. Otherwise, the pages are lightly toned as normal, with a small tape repair, smudge, and mark here and there, overall the inner pages are tight, clean, clear and unmarked. A complete, beautifully bound copy of this original 1845 work.

******John Ramsay McCulloch, b.1789 d.1864, was a Scottish economist, author and editor, widely regarded as the leader of the Ricardian school of economists after the death of David Ricardo in 1823. He was appointed the first professor of political economy at University College London in 1828. McCulloch collected the early literature of political economy, and wrote on the scope and method of economics and the history of economic thought. He edited the 1828 edition of The Wealth of Nations.******

VERY GOOD condition: The hardcover binding has some scrapes to the leather at the spine ends, spine folds, and corners, but overall the fine-binding is solid and attractive. The bound-in original softcover book is very nice, the pages are lightly toned, as normal, otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear. The personal inscription by Octave Uzanne to James Carleton Young is bright and clear.

A lovely, presentation copy of this rare book that deserves to go from the home of one great collector, James Carleton Young, to another.

Here is some information about the lesser known Minnesota bibliophile JAMES CARLETON YOUNG (from the Hennepin County Library website):

******James Carleton Young, b.1856 d.1918, was an internationally known Midwest American

book collector. He graduated with an M.A. from Cornell College in 1876, and in 1909 Cornell presented him with its first-ever Doctor of Literature degree. He became wealthy buying and selling mid-west real estate, and used almost all of it to acquire first edition books.

Young collected first editions of both contemporary and non-contemporary authors, often sending the contemporary books to their authors with a request that they inscribe them. In Europe Young was given the title "Le Roi des Livres". Young was named honorary commissioner to the Paris exposition of 1878, elected as one of the three foreign members to the Société Des Amis Des Livres in Paris, awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1910, made a Fellow to the Royal Geographical Society of London, and received awards from many other important European and American book clubs and societies. The books in his library ultimately numbered in the tens of thousands and required the services of a full-time librarian, bookkeeper, several assistants, catalogers, translators, and agents.

Mounting obstacles to his dream of keeping the collection together and eventually donating it to the Smithsonian forced him to allow it to be auctioned off in installments by the Anderson galleries in New York in 1916. Young took consolation that his books would "pass into the possession of my fellow collectors and enrich hundreds of public and private libraries." He ended up being much better known abroad than in America, and relatively unknown in Minneapolis.******

Self-published and self-made artist's book. First edition and only edition, 1989. Limited to 75 numbered copies and 10 artist proofs. This is copy #41. SIGNED and NUMBERED by D'Ambrosio on the title-page.

FINE and UNIQUE binding, the covers are marbled paper covered boards with a hinged leather spine and a burnished copper plate overlaid on the front; the dustjacket is gray denim cloth with marbled-paper trim; the endpapers are handmade marbled paper. An extraordinary binding.

The book is 6x9 inches and has 129 pages plus the Colophon page.

There are 60 mounted color photographs illustrating D'Ambrosio's fine printing works, books and broadsides, which he produced from 1969-1988.

Condition: FINE book in NEAR FINE dustjacket that has light signs of edge and corner wear. A lovely copy.

Joe d'Ambrosio, b.1934 d.2009, was a fine-printer and book artist who first began designing unusual printed items in Chicago in 1969.

There is a stamp on the front free endpaper that states: "Cataloga de Tintas de Imprenta, Numero 868", indicating this is copy #868 of an unstated limited edition.

GOOD Condition: The covers are worn through at the corner tips, rubbed at the edges, have some soiling, a few small stains, and the cloth hinge of the front cover has completely split but is holding. Internally, the front and rear inner hinges are split but holding, the endpapers have a couple spots, there are a few spots to the bottom of the first few plates, otherwise the inner pages and all the plates are tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

A wonderful look at printing inks used by publishers in South America, Mexico and the Caribbean in the early 1900s. Though English language Morrill printing ink catalogs are not difficult to find, Morrill Spanish catalogs aimed at South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean are quite scarce.

About GEORGE H. MORRILL COMPANY (from the Norwood Historical Society):

******George H. Morrill Company made ink for the printing industry. Founded in 1845 in Massachusetts by Samuel Morrill who invented and produced a superior ink compared to what had been on the market. The company grew rapidly, new products were added, and sales expanded. By the early 1900s they had offices in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Chicago. Their product line had grown as well. They started out making just black ink, around 1874 they began to make colored ink. By 1890, the company had enlarged its Norwood facilities to fourteen buildings. By 1910 it was said they were the largest producer of printing ink in the United States.******

Volume Three also has an Index to the Pressmarks in all Three Volumes. Each volume is fully ILLUSTRATED with PRESSMARKS from many American Private Presses. There are also two pieces of related ephemera laid-in.

Compiled, Written and Published by James Lamar Weygand aka "The Private Press of the Indiana Kid", Nappanee, Indiana, 1956, 1959 & 1962. First Editions, Limited to 165, 250 and 250 copies. James Lamar Weygand was a noted Indiana private press printer and publisher.

All three volumes are in NEAR FINE condition, just lightly used, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. Lovely copies.

For some reason Volume One (1956) shows up from time to time, but Volumes Two (1959) and Three (1962) rarely appear.

(1) THE TYPE SPECIMEN OF THE VATICAN PRESS 1628. A Facsimile. AMSTERDAM: Menno Hertzberger & Co., 1967. Hardcovers, 5x7.5 inches. Pagination: 40 pages (title page, contents, introduction); 5 leaves (tables); 8-74 pages (the Facsimile). The title page of the facsimile is printed in red and black. GOOD MINUS condition: the covers are toned at the spine and edges, there is a light bump at the top of the spine and the front hinge is split at the top 1 inch; internally, the glue is old and cracking which means pages or signatures could come loose if opened wide (this is the case with every copy of this book I have seen - the binder used poor glue) but all the pages are currently holding, otherwise the pages are sharp, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

(2) TYPE SPECIMEN OF DELACOLONGE / LES CARACTÈRES ET LES VIGNETTES DE LA FONDERIE DU SIEUR DELACOLONGE [Lyons 1773]. Facsimile with Introduction and Notes by Harry Carter. Amsterdam (Van Gendt & Co.), London and New York,1969. Hardcovers, 4.75x7.25 inches. Pagination: 82 plus the 120 Facsimile (facsimile pages printed on rectos only). GOOD MINUS condition: there is wear and a bit of splitting at the top and bottom spine folds, the inner pages are lightly toned and, like the above copy, poor glue was used in binding this book and the binding is crackling when when opened somewhat wide), otherwise the book is complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

About the CRANACH PRESS (from various Internet sources):

******The Cranach Press was founded by Count Harry Graf Kessler (1868-1937) with the undertaking to print the finest possible editions of the world's greatest literature in new and important German translations. Kessler employed print-men and illustrators of outstanding ability and produced some of the world's most beautiful books.

In 1913 Kessler commissioned Edward Gordon Craig, an English theatrical designer and theoretician, to make woodcut illustrations for a sumptuous edition of Shakespeare's Hamlet for the Cranach Press. GOOD Condition: The covers have soiling, a few marks, edgewear, and finger smudges; the paper spine title label is chipped at its top edge affecting several letters; internally there is occasional marginal finger soiling (one can imagine a bookbinder's not perfectly clean fingers handling this book), otherwise tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

About ADRIAN WILSON (from a 1988 NY Times Obituary):

******Adrian Wilson, a book designer and scholar who was considered one of America's leading fine printers, died Wednesday in San Francisco. He was 64 years old.

Working out of a small San Francisco studio known as '"The Press at Tuscany Valley," Mr. Wilson designed and printed scores of books. His many volumes, while little known to the general public, are famous among print connoisseurs, and many are collectors' items.

In 1983, Mr. Wilson won a MacArthur Fellowship.

He is survived by his wife and by his daughter, Melissa Wilson Marshall, of San Francisco.******
