Fold-open broadside, folded measures 9.5x12.5 inches oblong, folds open to show two inner panels, the entire sheet can fold open to show all 4 front facing panels, the backside is blank. Folded open the sheet measures 19 x 25 inches.

The broadside was made by ANSEL ADAMS for his friend and patron, ALBERT M. BENDER. Printed by Johnck & Seeger, Printers, San Francisco, as stated on the bottom corner of the rear panel of the folded broadside.

FAIR PLUS condition: there is creasing around the center fold, corners and edges; the rear panel (when folded) has a 1 inch closed tear to the bottom edge where the printer's information is printed; there is light soiling here and there; still a solid and bright copy. The folded broadside came in a plain heavy stock envelope, which remains in good condition.

About ALBERT M. BENDER (from Wikipedia):

******Albert Maurice Bender (born Dublin 1866 died San Francisco 1941) was a German-Irish-American art collector who was one of the leading patrons of the arts in San Francisco in the 1920s and 1930s. HE PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN THE EARLY CAREER OF ANSEL ADAMS and was one of Diego Rivera's first American patrons. By providing financial assistance to artists, writers, and institutions, he had a significant impact on the cultural development of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

A lover of literature from an early age, Bender began collecting rare books and helped create the Book Club of California in 1912. Inspired by his cousin Anne Bremer, a professional artist, Bender began collecting art,

Bender enjoyed giving things away even more than he liked acquiring them, and he became a prolific donor to Bay Area museums and libraries. Beginning in 1932 he donated 260 pieces of art to the National Museum of Ireland in memory of his mother. He gave important collections of rare books and fine printing to Mills College, Stanford University, the University of California, and the San Francisco Public Library. Stanford University has a Bender Room in its library.

Bender helped launch the career of many artists and photographers, including Ansel Adams. He financed the publication of Adams's first portfolio (Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras, 1927) and his first book (Taos Pueblo, with author Mary Hunter Austin, 1930).******

JOINT SHOW. Large and Psychedelically Amazing Poster by WES WILSON created for the Joint Show, exhibition that took place at the Moore Gallery, San Francisco, in 1967. The artists in the show were five of the major psychedelic artists of the time, Wes Wilson, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, and Rick Griffin.

Brilliantly colored, ink looks and feels fresh and vibrant, large 25x37.5 inches. Published by [NEON ROSE, San Francisco, 1967], later printing with no statement printed along the bottom edge.

NEAR FINE condition, a touch of edge wear, bright and lovely.

The poster has been stored in a rolled state (note the books in the photos holding down the poster's edges to keep it flat). It will be sent in its rolled state in a very sturdy mailing tube.

Nothing says 1967 quite like this poster! Would look great mounted and framed.

1975 THIRD ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL SAN FRANCISCO BOOK FAIR POSTER / BANNER, ink stamped on felt. Measures 17x34 inches. Image on one side only. Probably was meant to be hung like a banner.

Only FAIR condition, there are a couple big holes at the upper corners (probably from where it was originally hung), lots of other holes and tears throughout, some from handling, some perhaps even from moths (you can see the holes when the banner is held up to the light); there is soiling, especially at the lower section. Nonetheless a still solid poster /banner from the San Francisco International Book Fair poster of 1975.

A scarce item from back in the day when there were actually major book fairs in the city of San Francisco!

PUBLIC OUTCRY - Broadside Poem by JOYCE CAROL OATES. SIGNED beneath her printed name.

An unusual broadside poem by Oates published in 1976 the year of America's Bicentennial. The work focuses on the triviality of what the press defines as "Outrageous" and the trivial ways in which the press advises its followers to take action. The poem is surrounded by images of newspaper articles, including one that notes the Bicentennial "Color Your Yard Red, White and Blue".

Published by the SLOW LORIS PRESS, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1976. Printed in an edition of only 65 signed and numbered copies, this being copy 60.

The broadside poem is 11x17 inches (28x42.5 cm), and is professionally dry mounted on a 16x22 inch (40x55.5 cm) stiff mounting board. It is thus ready for framing.

VERY GOOD condition, a bit of edgewear to the mounting board, overall solid and nice.

Something about this poem shakes me, it is so relevant to today's world. Please keep at it Joyce.

From the Broadside: "Within a very few years of the publication of my Collected Poems (1938)... I renounced further trying the way of poetry... saying: I would write no more poems - and I wrote no more poems... (however) I wrote for (a close friend), in the 1978 Christmastime, a poem, marked as a poem for him only, giving it the title HOW A POEM CAME TO BE. I kept no copy of this privately written and given poem, and forgot the writing and the giving of it... I chanced, recently, to tell my friend of receiving a request for a poem to publish in broadside form from the Lord John Press, indicating my feeling some surprise that Mr. Yellin, the Press's director, should not have been aware that FOR FORTY YEARS there had been NO NEW POEMS of mine. But my friend reminded me that about a year ago there HAD been a new poem - the one I wrote for him; and he urged me to let him release it to me from its private status of being a poem for him only... I give here the poem, given him, to be out in the world..."

LAURA RIDING JACKSON, 1901-1991, was an iconoclastic American Poet. She left New England at the age of 25 to live with ROBERT GRAVES and his wife, Nancy Nicholson. The triangle did not suit her, and Laura Riding tried to commit suicide in 1927. Thereafter Robert Graves divorced his wife and lived together with Laura Riding in Majorca, France, England and Switzerland, and even went with her when she returned to the United States. They bitterly broke up in 1939. In 1941 Laura Riding Jackson renounced poetry, married Schuyler B. Jackson, and lived quietly with him in Wabasso, Florida, until her death in 1991. In the 60s, 70s and 80s she wrote a number of pieces explaining her reasons for renouncing poetry, but no poetry. This is apparently THE ONLY POEM written by Laura Riding Jackson since 1941.

Broadside with b&w illustration, printed on fine, watermarked, cream colored, rag paper, 12.5x17.5 inches. The watermark is an image of a hammer and anvil.

NEAR FINE condition. Some waviness to the edges where the broadside was "pulled" in the hand press printing process, as normal. A Lovely Broadside.

This broadside came from the estate of Dennis C. Turner, a San Francisco Doctor who was a Friend of Many Poets and Artists, and who was also a Fine-Printer and broadside publisher in his early days at Harvard when he was involved as one of the student printers at the LOWELL-ADAMS HOUSE PRINTERS. He was a longtime friend of Cecil Day Lewis, Albert Gelpi, and a number of other poets and writers. He died in 2013.

These LOWELL HOUSE, COLLEGE YARD (Harvard) broadsides from the mid 1960s, especially those by important American poets, are SCARCE.

EXHIBITION POSTER featuring a RISQUE ROARING 20s PHOTOGRAPH by ALBERT ARTHUR ALLEN. The photograph shows a line of NUDE WOMEN in a stylized pose. The photograph was likely taken in the midst of the Roaring Twenties when Albert Arthur Allen was most active (and at his most scandalous).

Poster, 20x24 inches, mounted onto stiff card backing. Will be mailed flat. Ready to be framed.

Published in 1978. The bottom right corner of the poster states "Copyright 1978 Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Titelman". It is presumed this was a poster announcing an upcoming exhibition of Allen's photographs that took place in 1979.

VERY GOOD condition, there is a very light 1x2 inch water stain at the bottom margin, otherwise bright, clean and clear.

This poster is much more uncommon than the "Chorus Line" poster that appears for sale from time to time.

About ALBERT ARTHUR ALLEN (from Wikipedia):

******Albert Arthur Allen, b.1886 d.1962, was an American figure photographer and film director known for nude portraiture.

Allen was born to a wealthy New England family in 1886, and was educated in Boston. At the age of twenty-one, he moved to California and spent years traveling and studying art. In 1916, he opened the Allen Art Studios in Oakland, California. The studio later became known as the Allen Institute of Fine and Applied Art, before it was destroyed by a fire in 1925. The following year, Allen rebuilt the studio and called it the Classic Motion Picture Corporation, a venture that lasted two years before declaring bankruptcy.

A motorcycle accident in 1923 left Allen permanently disabled, but he continued to work. His nude photographs were considered scandalous by American standards during the Roaring Twenties. He was indicted for sending obscene materials through interstate mail, and spent years in litigation.

Little is known about Allen's later life. His first commercial exhibition did not take place until 1979, seventeen years after his death. Allen died in Hayward, California, at the age of 75.******

NEAR FINE CONDITION. This copy is from the personal collection of Donald Allen. Scarce, only one copy held in institutional hands located in the Lew Welch Papers at Special Collections & Archives UC San Diego, which was originally acquired from Donald Allen.

LEW WELCH (1926-1971) prominent Beat and cult figure, one of a handful of poets including Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and Michael McClure, who emerged from the San Francisco Renaissance of the 1950s. Welch was a misfit even among the Beats. He wrote for the hipsters, Beats and beatniks who gathered nightly in San Francisco to listen to jazz, drink cappuccinos and sip red wine. In 1971 he wrote a suicide note that read, "I never could make anything work out right and now I'm betraying my friends." Then, with gun in hand he wandered into the forest surrounding Gary Snyder's home in the Sierra Nevadas, his body has never been found.

DONALD ALLEN (1912-2004) Lew Welch's literary executor, Grove Press editor, publisher, and author of The New American Poetry 1945-1960, the landmark literary anthology that has come to define the canon of early Beat poetry.

FOR PEACE IN INDOCHINA, END MILITARY AID.

POSTER, 2 color offset printing, unmounted, 17x23 inches. Art by Lucia Vernarelli, with her printed signature on the right side of the image, and her artist's monograph on the left side of the image.

This poster was published by a large coalition of peace groups supporting the Paris Peace Accords to end the war in Vietnam, c.1973.

The Paris Peace Accords were signed in 1973, however the U.S. Congress never ratified the accords and the treaty was broken numerous times. The U.S. ended up fleeing Vietnam in 1975.

Published by Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco, California, 1983. Featuring the Paste-up titled QUONDAM QUIDDITIES. First edition (edition size unknown) unsigned, un-numbered, color off-set lithograph on paper, 24.5" x 18", machine folded twice for mailing (one vertical and one horizontal fold), JESS Paste-ups 1954 to 1982, Opening May 11 through June 11, 1983 and Gallery Paule Anglim return address printed on the verso. VERY GOOD CONDITION: original large folded sheet, pinhole at center fold, some light creasing from handling, otherwise clean and vibrant, a lovely example of this scarce vintage exhibition poster, it would look great framed.

Painter and Collagist Jess (1923-2004) was a leading light of the San Francisco art scene from the 1950s until his death. One of the most original artists of the second half of the 20th century, his collages evoke comparisons to Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters, and Joseph Cornell. He was married to San Francisco Renaissance Poet Robert Duncan for four decades. Jess's work is held many museum collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and the National Gallery of Art.

However, it is known to have been published by NATIVE DANCER PRESS, OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, 1975, as noted by WorldCat and others. Broadside, 16" x 20" (40cm x 52cm). Printed on fine, RAG, watermarked paper. Printed on one side only. SIGNED and HAND NUMBERED by ROBERT CREELEY at the bottom. This is COPY 1 OF 26. Worldcat states that ONLY 13 OF THE 26 COPIES ARE NUMBERED AND SIGNED BY THE POET. If so, this is 1 of only 13 Signed and Numbered Copies. GOOD PLUS condition, creasing to the margins and edges from handling, some light creases from perhaps having been rolled, a light vertical crease from handling, perhaps from the printing process of this large broadside. Still a Solid, Sturdy Broadside, with no tears or chips. Would be look great framed. Scarce. A wonderful broadside from one of America's Great 20th Century Poets, Robert Creeley. MACUNAIMA (1969). A Brazilian Cinema Novo masterpiece, considered one of the most important films in Brazilian history. Directed by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, in Portuguese with English subtitles. A box office hit in Brazil, it was released in a dubbed version for American audiences in 1972 by New Line Cinema.

Illustrated by underground New York psychedelic comic artist Frank Mell. His incredible work is similar to legendary R. Crumb Comics, but much less known. His work is in the collection of the Oakland Museum, he illustrated psychedelic album covers, posters, and his work can be found in counter culture periodicals.

Original MOVIE POSTER, Offset lithograph on paper, 37" x 24.5". GOOD Condition: stored rolled for decades, so the colors remain very bright, the bottom margin has some waviness and shorelining/staining, the top edge has some light creasing, there are a few light smudges here and there and a few signs of wear, but overall the poster is solid, bright and clear.

An epic psychedelic adventure fantasy on Brazilian themes and myths, based on a Modernist novel written in 1928 by Mario de Andrade (no relation to the film's director), the metaphorical, savagely satirical film has drawn comparisons to the work of Fellini, John Waters and Lina Wertmuller. A revealing allegory of Brazil's complex racial and cultural history with subtle references to its repressive military rule. Like the musical style Tropicalia gave the world a uniquely Brazilian beat, Macunaima exhibits a strong Brazilian identity.

When the film was first released in the United States, its most sensational elements were played up. In a comprehensive 1976 essay about it in the media review journal Jump Cut, author J.R. Molotnik wrote that the movie had been dubbed "Jungle Freaks" for its U.S. release and was advertised in the Village Voice as "95 Minutes of Brazil Nuts." "New Line Cinema, the film's U.S. distributor, was clearly seeking to attract the Voice's avowedly offbeat readers with promises of an exotic spoof," Molotnik wrote. "The movie buff likely to attend such an 'underground' film was thus readied for a far-out lighthearted film, one bearing little resemblance to the 'heavy' classics of Latin American revolutionary cinema."
