ERRATA SLIP tipped in at title-page. Illustrated with three plates including an illustrative floor plan of a brewery). The majority of the book is devoted to the production of beer, including recipes for different varieties. There is a small section on tanning at the rear.

CONDITION: The rear cover is disbound (present but laid on loosely), the front cover is hanging on by its sewn binding, the spine covering is lacking (i.e. the sewn binding and rear page edges are visible); the covers are soiled, have some shorelining, creases, chips and tears to the paper, etc; nonetheless the covers are original and present. Internally, there is foxing throughout, heaviest on the first and last few pages and a few other pages here and there, but otherwise rather mild; there is some shorelining to the bottom margin of the first few pages and to the upper area of the last few pages; one page has a closed tear across its face and another a 3 inch vertical tear starting at the bottom edge (neat tears, all text fully legible), and there are small tears, edge chips, edge wear, etc. here and there; otherwise the pages are bright, clean and clear, and the printing is sharp throughout.

JOSEPH COPPINGER initiated a correspondence with THOMAS JEFFERSON in 1802. In 1815 Coppinger sent Thomas Jefferson a letter and included a prospectus for the American Practical Brewer. Subsequently Thomas Jefferson wrote a number of letters to Coppinger inquiring about the book. The following is an extract from one of the 1815 Thomas Jefferson letters to Joseph Coppinger (published online by The National Archives):

"Monticello Apr. 25. 1815 // I am lately become a brewer for family use, having had the benefit of instruction to one of my people by an English brewer of the first order. I had noted the advertisement of your book in which the process of malting corn was promised & had engaged a bookseller to send it to me as soon as it should come out. We tried it here last fall with perfect success, and I shall use it principally hereafter. During the revolutionary war, the brewers on James river used Indian corn almost exclusively of all other. In my family brewing I have used wheat as we do not raise barley."

(The National Archives published four letters online from the correspondence between Joseph Coppinger and President Thomas Jefferson and two letters from the correspondence between Joseph Coppinger and President James Madison.)

About JOSEPH COPPINGER (extracted from The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Volume 38, published by Princeton, 2012; and the National Archives online):

*****Joseph Coppinger, emigrated from Harbour View, Ireland, to New York in 1802. He soon became a partner in the Point Brewery, Pittsburgh. In 1802 he initiated a correspondence with THOMAS JEFFERSON. In an "Address to the People of America" published in 1809, Coppinger praised Jefferson, calling him the "polar star," for his service to the country. In 1815, he wrote Thomas Jefferson soliciting support for the establishment of a national brewing company in Washington, D.C. and sent him a prospectus for a book he was writing entitled The American Practical Brewer and Tanner. Thomas Jefferson was very interested in the book and wrote to Coppinger repeatedly to inquire about the status of its publication.*****

VERY GOOD condition booklet, just lightly used and still tight, bright, clean and clear. The two laid in pamphlets have been folded, are toned, and both have a bit of handwriting at the top in German which I cannot translate.

About Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg (from Wikipedia, roughly translated from the German by Google):

    ******Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg, b.1871 d.1936,

was a German bacteriologist and first director of the Bacteriological Institute at the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy.

From 1897 he was employed in the vinegar department at the Institute of Fermentation in Berlin. From 1906 he headed the bacteriological department of the technical scientific laboratory of the Institute of Fermentation. In 1922 he was appointed to Kiel to head the Bacteriological Institute of the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy Farming. In the eleven years as a university professor in Kiel, he supervised more than 80 dissertations and wrote several textbooks on the bacteriology of milk. Henneberg initiated the founding of the Federation of Technical Bacteriologists .

For bacteriological diagnostics, Henneberg invented new methods of investigation, such as the Chinese blue water agar developed especially for dairy farming, the spring stick culture and the cover glass agar method.

In his last years he devoted himself to the study of the saprophyte flora of the intestine and the human intestinal flora, in particular their conversion by the consumption of dairy products such as yoghurt and acidophilus milk.******

Raymond Armsby was a San Francisco socialite, Member of the BOHEMIAN CLUB, and, at the time, an Insurance agent for the rich and famous.

Single Page Typed Letter, Signed by Armsby, on Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York stationery. The letter is dated May 20, 1954. The letter comes with its original mailing envelope.

In the letter Armsby suggests to Marquise de Pins that her property (i.e. wines) stored in an expensive to insure Champagne Cellar be moved to one of the buildings on her Vineyards where FIRE INSURANCE rates would be less expensive, implying that the$30,000 in insurance she currently held should be returned to a $50,000 level. From the letter: "...you desired only to insure the personal property stored in the Champagne Cellar for $30,000...It is unfortunate...that the property was moved from San Francisco for storage in a building on which the Fire Rating Bureau had placed such a high premium rate...I suggest you look over your buildings at the Vineyards, indicate to me the one in which you wish to place the property...a building with a low fire rate..."

Condition: The letter has several folds from where it was folded to fit into a small envelope, and some corner tip creases. Overall the letter is tight, bright, clean. The envelope is well used, lots of postal stamps, a forwarding label, and wear from being opened, but still clearly shows the return address and the name of Marquise Helene de Pins.

About the Marquise Helene de Pins, aka Madame de Pins, and the Beaulieu Vineyards (from Wikipedia):

******Marquise Helene de Pins, the widow of the Marquis de Pins and daughter of the late Georges de Latour, who founded Beaulieu Vineyard in 1900 after immigrating to the United States from the Perigord region of southern France, inherited the Beaulieu Vineyards after the death of her husband.

In the 1950s and 1960s Beaulieu was considered one of the Big Four Napa Valley producers, along with Inglenook, Charles Krug, and Louis Martini.

The winery was purchased by international conglomerate Heublein in 1969. Heublein was later acquired by RJR Nabisco, then sold to Grand Metropolitan in 1987. Grand Metropolitan became Diageo plc in 1997 through a merger with Guinness. In 2016 Diageo sold Beaulieu Vineyard to Treasury Wine Estates.******

******With this exhibition Museum Ritter is making a small departure from its normal exhibition programme and showing art relating to the subject of chocolate. The reason for this digression is the 100th anniversary of the Ritter company in 2012.

Apart from numerous works made of chocolate, the exhibition also contains a large number of works from a variety of disciplines which revolve around chocolate in the broadest sense. Thus the show with its almost 60 objects, paintings, prints, installations, photographs and videos by almost 40 artists from the 20th and 21st centuries gives insight into art made of chocolate and art done with chocolate as its motif. Historical approaches by artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys and Dieter Roth are every bit as present as "material pictures" or collages from the 1960s and 1970s, along with outstanding examples of cutting edge art done in chocolate. In short, this art has at least as many facets as there are varieties of chocolate

Artists in the Exhibition: Sonja Alhäuser, Peter Anton, Günter Beier, Joseph Beuys, Corrado Bonomi, Stephen Craig, Paul McCarthy, Marcel Duchamp, Maria Dundakova, Ulrike Flaig, Yang Ah Ham, Richard Hamilton, Al Hansen, Thomas Heger, Dagmar Hugk, Klaus Illi & Bettina Bürkle, Ruth Knecht, Karin Kneffel, Lernert & Sander, Anja Luithle, Guido Münch, David Neat, Mel Ramos, Thomas Rentmeister, Hans Peter Reuter, Dieter Roth, Judith Samen, Karin Sander, Roswitha Schaab, Rolf Schneider, Roswitha Schober, Kurt Schwitters, Timm Ulrichs, Cornelius Völker, Wolf Vostell.******

Listings sometimes incorrectly state that this book was published in 1969. Rather misleading given the fact that the final two interviews for this book were in 1973, the transcripts for this book were reviewed and edited in 1973, and the actual book was published by UC Berkeley in a first and numbered edition in August, 1974.

Hardcovers, blue cloth covered boards, gilt titling on the spine, 8.5x11 inches. Pagination: [3], v, 151 pages, pages printed on one side only. Includes an 4.5x5.5 inch b&w photograph pasted onto a prelim page.

VERY GOOD condition, the covers upper corner tips are bumped, overall tight, bright, clean and clear. A solid, very nice copy.

This ORIGINAL UC BERKELEY FIRST EDITION is Hard to Find.
