About LEHMANN PRINTING and LITHOGRAPHING CO. of SAN FRANCISCO (from the CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY website):

******Exhibition of Labels December 10, 2016 - April 23, 2017. This exhibition explores the California Historical Society's exquisite collection of vintage beverage labels produced by the now-forgotten LEHMANN PRINTING and LITHOGRAPHING COMPANY of SAN FRANCISCO. Designed during the terrible privation and unrest of the Great Depression, Lehmann's labels graced hundreds of thousands of bottles of mass manufactured beverages, invoking deliciously unrealistic fantasies of peace, plenty, and the high-class life. Marrying design with consumer ideology, the Lehmann oeuvre represents a forgotten high point of American commercial art.

Founded in 1911 by Adolph Lehmann with an initial investment of $190, the firm expanded into a major industrial printing operation by 1935. One journalist called Lehmann "the printer who hasn't heard about the depression." The company employed one hundred people, including a permanent staff of anonymous artists who designed each custom label with skillful care. To meet an ever increasing demand for labels, Lehmann also pioneered a stock label service in the mid-1930s, creating catalogs of generic labels with stock vignettes that could be applied to a wide variety of products.

The Lehmann art department flourished in the fast pace of mass production, finding in their daily grind opportunities for seemingly inexhaustible creative invention. Their visual vocabulary included certain recurring motifs - parted curtains, heavy vines, and peaceful fields - and surprisingly effective combinations of Art Deco design with romanticized references to the Middle Ages, the Mission Era, and the Gold Rush. The labels mythologized both California's past and present, illustrating a vision of social and industrial harmony from which the bitter realities of history were excluded.

The exhibition features hundreds of colorfully illustrated labels, ephemera, and label catalog books from Lehmann Printing.******

These are followed by a photograph of the school building and the school's principal. Then comes the autograph section.

Some of the kids who signed and left comments in the book include: Harriet Rothberg, Lorraine Olanoff, Seymour Boom, Sol Wishnick, Meyer Meltzer, Seymour Weintraub, David Simon, Frieda Scharfstein, and many others.

The owner of the autograph book was named Murray, though some referred to him as "Moish or Moe".

The autograph book is in VERY GOOD condition, all the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. The zippered case is sturdy and functions well, but the gilt embossing on the front cover has substantially faded.

Everything is in generally GOOD condition, lightly used, handled and aged. Nice.

A wonderful and intimate look at the San Francisco Ballet in its early years, and during its early world tours, seen mainly through the eyes of Barbara Adams, Ballerina. I leave it to you to really dig through, discover and enjoy.

A couple notes about the S.F. Ballet during the years Barbara Adams danced and toured the world with the Company (from the S.F. Ballet website):

1957 - The Company makes its international debut with an 11 nation tour to Asia and the Middle East sponsored by the U.S. Department of State as an effort to present American culture around the world. The tour is so successful that it is followed by a four month tour of Latin America in 1958, and a three month tour of the Middle East in 1959.

1958 - To celebrate the Company's 25th anniversary, Lew Christensen creates Beauty and the Beast, his second full-length ballet for San Francisco Ballet, which becomes one of the most popular works over the next decade.

******Stanley Foster Reed, b.1917 d.2007, was an entrepreneur, inventor, and publisher who founded Reed Research Inc. in 1940, the journal Mergers & Acquisitions in 1965, and the magazine Campaigns & Elections in 1980.

In 1940, at age 23, Reed started a scientific research company, renting a two story building next to a junkyard in Georgetown. Over the next 20 years he built "Reed Research Inc." into a multi-million dollar company. He worked on issues ranging from safe land mine removal to electrocardiography to language learning laboratories to designs for shipping containers for missiles, obtaining scores of patents in the process. Based solely on his work experience he was admitted to membership in the Society of Naval Architects and received certification as a Professional Engineer.

In 1962, after selling Reed Research to Log-Etronics, Inc., he started Tech-Audit as well as the Reed Research Institute for Creative Studies in the RCA Building on K Street in Washington, where he ran a number of publishing businesses.

Reed started the publications "Directors & Boards" and "Export Today". He was the author of several books, including the best-selling "The Art of M&A" (co-authored with his daughter, Alexandra Lajoux), and "The Toxic Executive".

In the 1960s, he was actively involved in social issues, including sponsoring programs to encourage inner-city entrepreneurship, writing about the poor of Appalachia, and lecturing on ethics.******

Raymond Armsby was a San Francisco socialite, Member of the BOHEMIAN CLUB, and, at the time, an Insurance agent for the rich and famous.

Single Page Typed Letter, Signed by Armsby, on Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York stationery. The letter is dated May 20, 1954. The letter comes with its original mailing envelope.

In the letter Armsby suggests to Marquise de Pins that her property (i.e. wines) stored in an expensive to insure Champagne Cellar be moved to one of the buildings on her Vineyards where FIRE INSURANCE rates would be less expensive, implying that the$30,000 in insurance she currently held should be returned to a $50,000 level. From the letter: "...you desired only to insure the personal property stored in the Champagne Cellar for $30,000...It is unfortunate...that the property was moved from San Francisco for storage in a building on which the Fire Rating Bureau had placed such a high premium rate...I suggest you look over your buildings at the Vineyards, indicate to me the one in which you wish to place the property...a building with a low fire rate..."

Condition: The letter has several folds from where it was folded to fit into a small envelope, and some corner tip creases. Overall the letter is tight, bright, clean. The envelope is well used, lots of postal stamps, a forwarding label, and wear from being opened, but still clearly shows the return address and the name of Marquise Helene de Pins.

About the Marquise Helene de Pins, aka Madame de Pins, and the Beaulieu Vineyards (from Wikipedia):

******Marquise Helene de Pins, the widow of the Marquis de Pins and daughter of the late Georges de Latour, who founded Beaulieu Vineyard in 1900 after immigrating to the United States from the Perigord region of southern France, inherited the Beaulieu Vineyards after the death of her husband.

In the 1950s and 1960s Beaulieu was considered one of the Big Four Napa Valley producers, along with Inglenook, Charles Krug, and Louis Martini.

The winery was purchased by international conglomerate Heublein in 1969. Heublein was later acquired by RJR Nabisco, then sold to Grand Metropolitan in 1987. Grand Metropolitan became Diageo plc in 1997 through a merger with Guinness. In 2016 Diageo sold Beaulieu Vineyard to Treasury Wine Estates.******

Report by this THOROUGHBRED HORSE RACING TRACK on its new, and at the time novel, plan to film races at the Park for promotional and news purposes, as well as on the expansion of its still photography capabilities. The report goes into detail as to how the Track Organization intends to make the films unique enough that TV stations will want to show them without the Track having to pay for play. Condition: Some wear and staining to covers, including coffee cup rings, droplet stains, soiling, and some edge and corner wear. Internally very nice, the pages and photos are bright, clean, clear, and unmarked. One of a only few, perhaps even a one of a kind report. An interesting, rare item related to the history of Delaware Park. About DELAWARE PARK THOROUGHBRED HORSE RACING TRACK (from Wikipedia): ******Delaware Park (also known as DelPark) is an American horse racing track, casino, and golf course in Stanton, Delaware. It is located just outside the city of Wilmington, and about 30 miles from Philadelphia. William DuPont, Jr. a designer of twenty three racing courses, designed and built Delaware Park Racetrack in partnership with Donald P. Ross. Phillip T. Harris of Media, PA., was hired as the architectural engineer. The facility opened on June 26, 1937 and today is the only thoroughbred horse racing track in the state of Delaware. Races are run from May to October. In recent years, near Triple Crown winner Afleet Alex and Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, both won their career debuts at Delaware (Barbaro did it on the grass at 7-1), and the sprint champion mare Xtra Heat was based there. The track is now home to many horses who routinely ship to and win at the major circuits in New York, Florida and Kentucky.******

About A MAJORITY OF ONE (from Wikipedia): ******The play is a drama concerning racial prejudice involving Mrs. Jacoby, a Jewish widow from Brooklyn, New York, and Koichi Asano, a millionaire widower from Tokyo. Mrs. Jacoby is sailing to Japan with her daughter and foreign service officer son-in-law who is being posted to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. She still considers the country the enemy responsible for the death of her son during World War II, but her feelings change when she meets Mr. Asano on board the ship. When she advises her family of Mr. Asano's desire to court her, Mrs. Jacoby's daughter, whose loyalty is to her mother rather than her husband, objects to the possibility of an interracial marriage. The 1959-60 Broadway production was directed by Dore Schary and ran for 3 previews and 556 performances, with Gertrude Berg and Cedric Hardwicke. In 1961 Spigelgass adapted his play for a Warner Bros. film starring Rosalind Russell, Alec Guinness, Madlyn Rhue and Ray Danton and directed by Mervyn LeRoy.******

Archive Related to a Privately Published Book that was designed and printed by San Francisco Fine Printer Lawton Kennedy titled THE SINGINGS AND SAYINGS OF PATTY JANE - Two to Six Years Old.

The printing of the book was privately commissioned by the HOHFELD FAMILY, a prominent San Francisco family, and was published by the Hohfelds as a gift to be sent to family and friends. It consists of a collection of sayings, songs and poetry uttered by Jane Hohfeld Galante, as a child in San Francisco in the late 1920s and early 1930s, collected by her mother. Jane went on to become a leading Bay Area chamber musician and philanthropist. The book itself was printed by Lawton Kennedy in a very limited number and is quite scarce.

This small archive contains the book, letters and ephemera related to the book, and a pair of illustrated manuscript books upon which the printed book was based. Includes:

    1) The Singings and Sayings of Patty Jane Two to Six Years Old. Said and Sung by Jane Hohfeld Galante, Written Down By Her Mother Lillian Devendorf Hohfeld. Drawn and Hand Colored by Alice Wilkins Neilson.

Designed and Printed by [Lawton Kennedy], San Francisco, 1960.

Hardcovers, plain cloth covered boards, 6.5x10 inches, 49 unnumbered pages.

GOOD condition: Offsetting and a couple small damp stains to covers, fraying to cloth along edges.

    2) Two HAND DRAWN and HAND COLORED manuscript books by Alice Wilkins Neilson, pairing sayings by a young Jane Hohfeld with original drawings. These appear to have been the manuscripts that formed the basis of Lawton Kennedy's published book.

"Patty Jane Hohfeld Age Three Years" and "Patty Jane Hohfeld Age Four Years." [San Francisco]: Circa 1960. 8vos, 20pp and 26pp, string bound.

GOOD condition: Small tears along spine, toning and creasing to wrappers. UNIQUE and QUITE LOVELY.

    3) Eight handwritten letters addressed to Jane and her mother in the early 1960s, from friends who had received the book, congratulating the authors and praising the book. These Include:

A SIGNED handwritten note from Mr. and Mrs. LAWTON KENNEDY on their personal notecard, enclosing a small hand drawn music score which was published as a drawing in the book.

A SIGNED handwritten letter from ALBERT ELKUS, a well known Bay Area composer and pianist.

A SIGNED handwritten two page letter from CONRAD BECK, a Swiss composer. The letter is written in French.

A letter with a drawing from Ruth Tooze, an author; a letter from Mrs. Leonard Bacon, widow of the Pulitzer Prize winning poet from Rhode Island, and more.

The letters are in generally GOOD condition, some creases and bends, but all are clear, clean and fully legible

    4) A handwritten list of 65 friends to whom the book was sent, on Jane Hohfeld's personal stationery

    5) A photograph of Jane, several pages of poems, (some by Jane), a get well soon card, and two articles from a magazine on the work of Lawton Kennedy.

RARE small archive relating to Lawton Kennedy, the Hohfeld Family, and Jane Hohfeld Galante. Especially interesting with the TWO LOVELY ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT BOOKS and the SIGNED HANDWRITTEN LETTERS from Composers.
