VNESHPOSYLTORG [AMTORG] had its offices in New York City. In 1971 its offices were bombed by the JDL.

PODAROGIFTS, representing products of VNESHPOSYLTORG [AMTORG], had a storefront in New York City. In 1971 the storefront was bombed by the J.A.R. "Jewish Armed Resistance".

About the 1971 PODAROGIFTS BOMBING (from the New York Times Dec. 6, 1971):

******A crude bomb exploded yes terday in the doorway of a Fifth Avenue gift shop specializing in Russian products. No injuries were reported.

About five minutes after the explosion at 5:45 P.M., The Associated Press reported it had received a telephone call from an unidentified man who said: "A Russian gift shop at Fifth Avenue and 27th Street has just been bombed by the Jewish Armed Resistance J.A.R. All those that trade with Russia beware. Let my people go. Good night"

Detectives of the bomb section said that apparently three or four aerosol cans taped together and set off by a lighted can of Sterno had caused the explosion.******

About the 1971 VNESHPOSYLTORG / AMTORG BOMBING (from the New York Times Apr. 23, 1971):

******A bomb In an attaché case exploded yesterday at the offices of the Amtorg Trading Corporation, the Soviet trade agency, on Lexington Avenue. No one was injured. The bomb went off about 20 minutes after the agency and The Associated Press and United Press International received telephone calls from a male caller who said:

"There have been several time bombs placed in the offices of Amtorg, at the Soviet freight office, at 355 Lexington Avenue. They will go off in less than 15 minutes. Free all Soviet Jewish prisoners. Let my people go. Never again."

Frank Hassett, engineer of the building at 40th Street, said he received a call just moments before the bomb exploded in the 19th floor stairwell at 5:37 P.M. He said: "They identified themselves as the Jewish Defense League. They told me to evacuate the building because the 19th floor was going to be bombed."

Amtorg takes up the entire 19th floor of the 22-story building. All floors between the 22d and 16th were evacuated. The explosion collapsed part of the ceiling on the 19th floor, blew out doors and windows, tore a hole in the concrete stairwell, destroyed chairs in the Amtorg office and touched off fires.******

About VNESHPOSYLTORG / AMTORG / PODAROGIFTS (from Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet):

******The All-Union Association Vneshposyltorg (All-Union Foreign Mail Order Trade Association) was an organization in the Soviet Union which handled trade in goods for hard currency. Vneshposyltorg sold consumer goods to foreigners with delivery within Soviet territory. This gave foreigners the opportunity to send gifts to their friends and relatives in the Soviet Union

Russian made goods could be ordered by catalog or through its Podarogifts Inc. storefront in New York City.******

    Russell Smith

Three Ring Binder filled with Handwritten Notes and Official Record Sheets on Mares Bred (Pacific Coast Quarter Horses) during 1965 and 1966. Horse names include: BLUE CACTUS, Jesse Bar, BLUE LEDGER, Blue Miller, BOLD MINUTE, (Copay?) Coleen, CAT SOX, and many many MORE. For each horse, or perhaps for each time a mare is bred, there is a page with some handwritten notes followed by what appears to be an official page filled with small boxes with handwritten code letters in many of the boxes (I assume breeders know what the code letters stand for). Approximately 150 - 200 total sheets, meaning 75-100 pages of notes with 75-100 official sheets with handwritten letter codes. There is no definitive information on…

There is no definitive information on the binder's owner, perhaps RUSSELL SMITH because there is a personal letter (apparently unrelated to horse breeding) laid-in the front on his letterhead which reads: "Russell Smith / R-S / Registered Quarter Horses / Paicines, California." Russell Smith was actively involved in the PCQHA, so it would make sense that the binder was his. However, the letter is dated 1955 and the horse information is from 1965-1966, so... GOOD condition, some of the pages have pulled away from the 3 rings and are torn at the holes, but they remain in their proper order; otherwise the pages are bright, clean, clear and fully legible. An interesting look at Quarter Horse Breeding in Northern California.

(Photocopying was, and often still is, how original copies of working budgets, with changes, were quickly produced and distributed to studios, producers, agents, directors, and others involved in a motion picture production.)

Every page has detailed information regarding the film's budget, including costs of extras, gaffers, stars, makeup and hairdressing, set designs, equipment, etc. etc. etc. This was truly a working budget, with white-out changes here and there throughout as cost estimates changed.

The budget pages are in VERY GOOD condition, lightly age toned, some signs of handling, and some white-out changes here and there (as noted above), otherwise the pages are bright, clean, clear and unmarked. The manila folder holding the budget breakdown has creases, wear, and some small stains.

A wonderful and intimate look at the breakdown of every cost involved in the production of a major motion picture in 1968.

    About THE SCALPHUNTERS (from Wikipedia):

******The Scalphunters is a 1968 American Western film starring Burt Lancaster, Ossie Davis and Telly Savalas. The film was directed by Sydney Pollack, with the score written by Elmer Bernstein. Davis was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film. Filming took place in Sierra de Organos National Park in the town of Sombrerete, Mexico.******

CONDITION: Both items are in VERY GOOD condition, just some signs handling and use, still solid, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

About the MEMPHIS MIRACLE (from Wikipedia):

******The Memphis Miracle was a 1994 meeting in Memphis, Tennessee, where representatives of Pentecostal and Charismatic denominations and churches came together to form the Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches of North America (PCCNA), an interdenominational and racially inclusive partnership. The PCCNA was created to replace the Pentecostal Fellowship of North America (PFNA) which was formed in 1948 by White Pentecostal Churches, but excluded Black Pentecostal groups. The PCCNA was created to remedy the situation, and it was at the Memphis meeting that the PFNA and its members apologized to the Black Pentecostal bodies.******

Abram Hunt Family of Rodman, New York

39 UPSTATE NEW YORK FARMING and BEEKEEPING FAMILY DIARIES - ABRAM HUNT FAMILY of RODMAN, NEW YORK 1864-1918 Successful Farm with 200 Hives

The years of the 39 DIARIES are: 1864, 1871, 1874-1878 (5), 1880, 1882-1884 (3), 1887-1888 (2), 1890-1897 (8), 1899-1913 (15), 1916-1918 (3). There are also a few pieces of ephemera, folk remedies written on scraps of paper, laid in, including a quite detailed 1896 recipe for dandelion wine.

Most of the diaries are in the hand of ABRUM HUNT, 1830-1912, the owner of the farm and apiary and the patriarch of the family. After Abrum Hunt's death in 1912 his wife, "Mrs. A. Hunt", carried on the diaries from 1913-1918, She died in 1919, and so ended…

Most of the diaries are in the hand of ABRUM HUNT, 1830-1912, the owner of the farm and apiary and the patriarch of the family. After Abrum Hunt's death in 1912 his wife, "Mrs. A. Hunt", carried on the diaries from 1913-1918, She died in 1919, and so ended the diaries.

This collection of 39 single family diaries is the most comprehensive daily record of a 19th and early 20th century upstate New York family farm and apiary that I have ever seen.

Planting oats, planting corn, planting everything, cultivating, cutting wood, building fences, fixing barns, painting everything, spreading manure, digging potatoes, oiling harnesses, rolling oats, waiting for rain, dealing with floods, freezing freezing freezing weather, impossible to stay warm, shoeing horses, cleaning pastures, draining swamps, feeding everything, killing "beef", selling turkeys, calves, bulls, attending many funerals, and LOTS OF BEES BEES BEES, selling honey, building frames, painting hives, taking "swarms" into the cellar for winter, harvesting honey and pollen, busy busy bees.

Abram Hunt was a successful farmer and beekeeper who seemed to hold a special affection for his bees. In fact, even his last entry on April 30, 1912, less than two weeks before his death on May 12, 1912, was about his bees: "Feeding the Bees / they brought in lots of pollen today". Pride in his bees until the end.

CONDITION: The 39 diaries vary in condition, a number are poor, with disbound covers, missing pages, stains, etc; some are fair, with foxing, loose covers, some waviness and soiling; many are good, with normal age toning, handling, wear and use. What is impressive about these diaries is the handwriting in the daily entries is almost always fully legible. Abrum Hunt, the patriarch, wrote with a clear hand so future generations (us) could read what he had to say.

July 3, 1904: "Bees, Bees, Bees, and lots of them / that & milking is all I can do. More rain."

May 7, 1891: "Cultivated in the Oats in Swamp & Rolled It / Done Now."

About ABRAM HUNT (from his obituary in the 17 May 1912 Watertown Daily Times):

******ABRAM HUNT of RODMAN [New York] DIES OF HIS INJURIES. HE WAS TRAMPLED ON BY A HORSE.

Watertown Daily Times, Rodman, New York, May 17. Abram Hunt, one of the earliest residents of Rodman, died at his home on Sunday morning, May 12. He was 81 years old. Some ten days ago he went to his horse barn to feed grain to his horses as usual, and while in the stalls a horse became frightened and commenced rearing and kicking. Mr. Hunt fell under its feet and was trampled and he shortly passed away.

Mr. Hunt was born on Oct. 18, 1830. and was nearly a lifelong resident of this town, living on his farm near the village of Rodman for 60 years. He was an enterprising and successful farmer. On March 25, 1853, Mr. Hunt was married to Miss Betsey Jane Parker of Toronto, who has been a most worthy aid and helpmate in their long married life.

Mr. Hunt was a fine musician, especially on the violin, and was in frequent demand at numerous parties. HE WAS ESPECIALLY FOND OF KEEPING BUSY BEES AND HAD SOME 200 HIVES IN HIS CARE. Besides his wife, Mr. Hunt Is survived by four children [including] Charles Hunt of Rodman, New York, and Mrs. Clara Hunt Howard, the well known singer of Wausau, Wisconsin.*****

Likely the collection of DELLA PEASE and/or JOHN ELLIOTT ROSS, as most of the photos are of her and her friends, and some others are of him and his friends. The two College of Emporia students may have taken these snaps of each other and their friends, and then combined the photos into this gathering when they later got married. The two College of Emporia students may have taken these snaps of each other and their friends, and then combined the photos into this gathering when they later got married. The marriage turned Della Pease into Della Pease Ross. They both graduated from the College of Emporia in 1912. Most of the photos seem to be from that year or earlier. One photo is very old, the backside info indicates it is a photo of the parents of one or the other. Della Pease and John Ross were married in 1916, a few years after graduating.

The photos are various sizes, from very small up to 3.5x5.5 inches. Included are many real photo postcards that are truly RPPC because the images are mostly of the students themselves. Good condition, some with edge wear, some fading, signs of light handling, overall clear images and legible information where found on the backsides and margins.

Rich in KANSAS GENEALOGY. What makes this Emporia Kansas photo collection interesting is that many have the FULL NAMES of the people in the photo written on the backside, and sometimes information about where they are and what they are doing.. Some of the names include: Della Pease, John E. Ross, Katherine Polk, Claire Boyle, George Merritt Polk, Grace Smith, and many, many more. Some of the photo postcards are unused, others were sent and have writing on the backsides, all relate to Della Pease, John E. Ross, or others of the College of Emporia.

In the photos Della Pease and her friends seem to be doing the usual fun college stuff. The back of one of the photos reads: "A picnic supper at the Chautauqua grounds at one of the girls' tents. We had a great time. Can you find me?" After graduating in 1912 it wouldn't always be fun for Della Pease or her school mate and future husband John Elliott Ross...

About JOHN ELLIOTT ROSS (from his Obituary in the Princeton Theological Seminary Alumni Report of 1920-1929):

JOHN ELLIOTT ROSS, b.1883 d.1925, was born near Smith Center, Kansas, son of Wilson Erskine and Mary Frances (Elliott) Ross. He made a public confession of his faith in the United Presbyterian Church of Sterling, Kansas. His preparatory studies were pursued in the Franklin Academy, Kansas, and he graduated from the COLLEGE OF EMPORIA in 1912. He entered the Seminary at Princeton in the fall of the same year, remaining more than two years. He completed his theological course in the Western Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1916. He was licensed by the Presbytery of Osborne and ordained by the same Presbytery, September 19, 1916. He sailed for India October 10, 1916, and engaged in missionary work at Ludhiana, India, and then at Saharanpur, from 1918 to 1923. He returned to this country on furlough, remaining a year from 1923 to 1924. He died January 15, 1925, in Kasur, Punjab, India, of heart failure, while sleeping, in the forty-second year of his age. He was buried at Ferozepur, India. He received the degree of A.M. from Princeton University in 1914. He was married August 17, 1916, in Pittsburg, Kansas, to Della Pease, who with two sons survives him.

About DELLA PEASE ROSS (from her Obituary in the EMPORIA GAZETTE of 10 February 1930):

Word has been received in Emporia of the death of Mrs. Della Pease Ross, a graduate of the College of Emporia, in 1912. She died Friday, February 7, at the Lahore hospital in India. Her husband, the late John E. Ross, was also a member of the College graduating class of 1912. They had been doing missionary work in India for about 15 years.

To be clear, the photos in this collection are all pre India missionary work, when there was lots of laughter in their and their friends' eyes.
