Archive of RADICAL FINNISH SOCIALIST FEDERATION of FITCHBURG, MASS. 1914-1922

    Includes:

80+ MANUSCRIPT PAGES (and two typed pages) describing STRIKES, CALLS TO ACTION, RED FLAG MARCHES, LABOR PROTESTS, POLICE BRUTALITY, etc. + 4 pages with over 60 SIGNATURES of FINNISH SOCIALIST FEDERATION MEMBERS including OSKARI TOKOI (see his Wikipedia page), and an interesting page from 1933 indicating this written archive may have come from a "time-capsule".

The 80+ manuscript pages (and 2 typed pages) are an important "I was there" look at many of the strikes, rallies, marches, speeches, battles with police, etc, that took place during the Finnish Socialist Federation's most radical era 1914-1922. The 80+ manuscript pages (and 2 typed pages) are an important "I was there" look at many of the strikes, rallies, marches, speeches, battles with police, etc, that took place during the Finnish Socialist Federation's most radical era 1914-1922. The authors of these written "reports" are unstated. Many seem to be in the same hand. They are written in English.

The 60 signatures are on 4 pages with a "RAIVAAJA PUBLISHING COMPANY / FITCHBURG, MASS" letterhead, undated but likely c.1930. ("Raivaaja was a Finnish-language newspaper published from 1905 to 2009 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, by Raivaaja Publishing Company. For the first three decades of its existence the publication was closely associated with the Socialist Party of America." - Wikipedia)

Did these handwritten reports come from a Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Finnish Labor Society time capsule??? Maybe. There is a typed page, in Finnish, on "Finnish Labor Society SAIMA" letterhead dated 1933 that precedes the rest of the pages in the binder, which states (translated by Google):

******"That part of the Finnish people, who in the storms of time moved to this city of Fitchburg, during the last decades, would like to preserve for posterity some incidents from their phase-rich journey. As can be seen from the contents of the box, they were Finnish migrants, mostly young men and women who hoped that on this continent they would be able to partake of the warmer sunshine of a happy day than in the country of their birth. However, hard work was a condition of livelihood here as well, and that is why many of them became attached to the labor movement, whose struggles are described in detail in the various reports herein.

The box will be buried in the ground on Thursday evening, May 11, 1933, in a place known as Saima Park. Naturally no one knows when it will be found, but it is supposed to remain in the ground for several generations and after emerging will be solid material from the past for researchers of the Labor cause. In Fitchburg, Massachusetts, May 11, 1933. / Lauri Moilanen / Saima scribe of the Finnish Workers' Association."******

Each of the manuscript pages, the signature pages, and the "time capsule" page, are in plastic sleeves and collected in a three ring binder.

GOOD Condition: The signature pages and the "time capsule" page all have rust stains at the top, likely from metal clips or pins. The manuscript pages are all in remarkably good condition, bright, clean and clear. Like they've been archivally stored in a time capsule or something!

About the FINNISH SOCIALIST FEDERATION (from the University of Minnesota Libraries website:

******"The Saima Workers' Society of Fitchburg, Mass. was founded in 1894 as a Finnish workers' organization. In 1905, it joined the Socialist Party, thus making it the oldest Finnish Socialist chapter in the United States. In 1906, it joined the Finnish Socialist Federation, and by 1924-1925 was the largest such chapter in the country, with over five hundred members.******

About ARNO WERNER (from his New York Times Obituary):

******Arno Werner, a German-born master bookbinder who was credited with keeping the craft alive in the United States, died on July 28, 1995, at his home in Hadlyme, Connecticut. He was 96.

His work, often executed in painstakingly hand-tooled morocco leather, was marked by a sturdy yet elegant simplicity. Until 1982 he was chief bookbinder for rare editions at the Houghton Library at Harvard University. His association with the library went back almost to its opening in 1942. In the catalog of Houghton Library's 1981 Retrospective of Werner's work, James E. Walsh, the keeper of printed books, wrote: "There is scarcely a shelf in the Houghton Library that does not contain one or more pieces of Arno's work."

Arno Werner was born in 1899, in Mylau, Saxony, one of 10 children of a weaver. He was apprenticed to a bookbinder at 13. He came to New York in 1925 with $25 and his tools in a cigar box.******

WOUNDED SOLDIER'S WWI FRENCH HOSPITAL PHOTO ALBUM - YVETOT HOPITAL DE L'ALLIANCE c.1914. Likely the album of JOSEPH BROSSARD, 7th ZOUAVE BATAILLON, 6th Compagnie, who apparently spent time at the hospital recovering from wounds. There are two handmade cards related to him in the album.

There are twelve (12) photographs of nurses, patients and various other shots taken inside the hospital, varying in size from 2.75x4.75 to 4.75x5.75 inches. There are also six (6) other photographs of people who appear unrelated to the hospital, a man sowing seeds, a mother and child, two men in old traditional garb, a portrait of a woman who appears to be a matriarch of some sort, etc.

There are also two handmade cards laid-in. One card has the name of a soldier: Joseph Brossard, 7th Zouave, 6th Battalion, along with a bit of writing in French; and the other card - somewhat tattered - also has the name Joseph Brossard, and a decorative title: "Souvenir de 1914-1915".

These are unique photos of the Nurses and Patients at the Yvetot Hospital during WWI, plus two "I was there" handmade cards of one of the wounded soldiers whose album this likely was. Though real photo postcards of the Yvetot hospital can be found, these original photographs are unique.

GOOD condition: A few of the photographs are lightly faded, most are bright and sharp. The loose photo of two men in traditional garb has some tears. One of the handmade, hand colored, personal cards is in GOOD condition, solid but showing some age, the other card is torn and ragged along the edges but still lovely and informative.

A unique item related to the important WWI Yvetot Hospital, and Joseph Brossard of the infamous Zouave Battalions.

Planting oats, planting corn, planting everything, cultivating, cutting wood, building fences, fixing barns, painting everything, spreading manure, digging potatoes, oiling harnesses, rolling oats, waiting for rain, dealing with floods, freezing freezing freezing weather, impossible to stay warm, shoeing horses, cleaning pastures, draining swamps, feeding everything, killing "beef", selling turkeys, calves, bulls, attending many funerals, and LOTS OF BEES BEES BEES, selling honey, building frames, painting hives, taking "swarms" into the cellar for winter, harvesting honey and pollen, busy busy bees.

Abram Hunt was a successful farmer and beekeeper who seemed to hold a special affection for his bees. In fact, even his last entry on April 30, 1912, less than two weeks before his death on May 12, 1912, was about his bees: "Feeding the Bees / they brought in lots of pollen today". Pride in his bees until the end.

CONDITION: The 39 diaries vary in condition, a number are poor, with disbound covers, missing pages, stains, etc; some are fair, with foxing, loose covers, some waviness and soiling; many are good, with normal age toning, handling, wear and use. What is impressive about these diaries is the handwriting in the daily entries is almost always fully legible. Abrum Hunt, the patriarch, wrote with a clear hand so future generations (us) could read what he had to say.

July 3, 1904: "Bees, Bees, Bees, and lots of them / that & milking is all I can do. More rain."

May 7, 1891: "Cultivated in the Oats in Swamp & Rolled It / Done Now."

About ABRAM HUNT (from his obituary in the 17 May 1912 Watertown Daily Times):

On March 25, 1853, Mr. Hunt was married to Miss Betsey Jane Parker of Toronto, who has been a most worthy aid and helpmate in their long married life.

Mr. Hunt was a fine musician, especially on the violin, and was in frequent demand at numerous parties. HE WAS ESPECIALLY FOND OF KEEPING BUSY BEES AND HAD SOME 200 HIVES IN HIS CARE. About THE BLACK SCHOLAR Journal (from Wikipedia):

******The Black Scholar is a journal founded in California, in 1969, by Robert Chrisman, Nathan Hare, and Allan Ross. It is the third oldest Black studies journal in the US, after the NAACP's The Crisis (founded in 1910) and the Journal of African American History (formerly The Journal of Negro History, founded in 1916).

Robert Chrisman (1937-2013) and Nathan Hare (b. 1933) were active in the 1968-69 Black studies struggle at San Francisco State University. The experience motivated Chrisman and Hare to create a venue outside of the academy for Black knowledge production. In November 1969, Hare (publisher), Chrisman (editor) and Allan Ross, a white Bay Area printer (business manager) founded The Black Scholar: A Journal of Black Studies and Research, to cover issues of social, cultural, economic and political thought.******

The collection belonged to Anne Taylor Gibson and Annie Cheatham. Anne Taylor Gibson's signature is on the first page of the first issue, and issue #20 has "Annie Cheatham's Copy" written at the top of the first page. Laid into issue #20 are two relevant items. One is a 5 page article by Betty Friedan that was folded and sent to Ann Gibson by Annie Cheatham (based on her return address). The second item is a handwritten note to Anne from another woman thanking her for the loan of these issues, it is written on a lovely 1983 postcard from the Women's Peace Encampment at Seneca Army Depot. The back cover of this issue is of a man proudly displaying his tee shirt that says "Nuke The Bitches - The Women's Peace Encampment". Yikes.

All 26 numbers / 25 issues are in generally GOOD condition, there is some edge, spine end, and corner wear here and there to the covers, a few articles have some underlining and a bit of yellow highlighting, there is foxing to the page edges (page edges of the closed issues), the first issue has some clear tape repair to its bottom corner and a couple rusty paper clips to a couple pages; overall the issues are just lightly used, complete, bright, clean, and clear. A solid, nearly complete run (lacking only the last issue) of this hard-to-find feminist publication of the 70's, 80's and 90's.

Included is a second copy (duplicate) of the double 18/19 issue.

    About HERESIES (from Wikipedia):

******HERESIES was a feminist magazine published from 1977 to 1993, organized by a collective known as the Heresies Collective based in New York City. Each of the 27 issues (including the 18/19 double issue) was collectively edited by a group of volunteers interested in a single topic under the guidance of the "mother collective"; each issue had its own style and perspective. Subjects included feminist theory, art, politics, patterns of communication, lesbian art and artists, women's traditional arts and crafts, and politics of aesthetics, violence against women, working women, women from peripheral nations, women and music, sex, film, activism, racism, postmodernism, and coming of age.

The journal was seen not only as a major contribution to the feminist art scene, but as a forum for feminist thinking that experimented with an editorial format that asked contributors to grapple with hierarchical and societal issues of difference. And it created a public discourse in feminist thought and expression. Initial members of the Heresies Collective included Joan Braderman, Mary Beth Edelson, Elizabeth Hess, Ellen Lanyon, Arlene Ladden, Lucy R. Lippard, Marty Pottenger, Miriam Schapiro and May Stevens.******

About the SENECA WOMEN'S ENCAMPMENT FOR A FUTURE OF PEACE (from Wikipedia):

******The Seneca Women's Encampment for a Future of Peace and Justice was a women only peace camp formed to protest the scheduled deployment of Cruise and Pershing II missiles before their suspected shipment from the Seneca Army Depot to Europe in the fall of 1983.

The camp took place mainly during the summer of 1983, from July 4 through Labor Day, concluding with a Labor Day Action honoring workers and highlighting the inflation and job loss that militarism brings. Thousands of women came to participate and rally against nuclear weapons and the patriarchal society that created and used those weapons.******

MAI 68 - About the MAY 1968 FRENCH STUDENT & WORKER REVOLUTION (from Wikipedia):

******Beginning in May 1968, a period of civil unrest occurred throughout France, lasting seven weeks and punctuated by demonstrations, general strikes, and the occupation of universities and factories. At the height of events, which have since become known as May 68 (French: Mai 68), the economy of France came to a halt. The protests reached a point that made political leaders fear civil war or revolution; the national government briefly ceased to function after President Charles de Gaulle secretly fled France to West Germany on the 29th.

The unrest began with a series of far-left student occupation protests against capitalism, consumerism, American imperialism and traditional institutions. Heavy police repression of the protesters led France's trade union confederations to call for sympathy strikes, which spread far more quickly than expected to involve 11 million workers, more than 22% of France's population at the time. The movement was characterized by spontaneous and decentralized wildcat disposition. It was the largest general strike ever attempted in France, and the first nationwide wildcat general strike.

The events of May 1968 had a lasting impact and continue to influence French society. The period is considered a cultural, social and moral turning point in the nation's history.******

A unique index to one Basilius Vaentinus's important work on alchemy.

    About BASILIUS VALENTINUS (from Wikipedia):

******Basilius Valentinus (English: Basil Valentine), ostensibly a 15th century alchemist, possibly Canon of the Benedictine Priory of Saint Peter in Erfurt, Germany but more likely a pseudonym used by one or several 16th century German authors. Modern scholarship suggests that one author was Thölde, but that others were involved. Thölde published the first five books under Valentinus's name.

Whoever he was, Basilius Valentinus had considerable knowledge of alchemy. The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine is a widely reproduced alchemical book attributed to Valentine, first published in 1599 by Johann Thölde. It contains two parts, the second of which houses the twelve keys. These were accompanied by woodcut engravings from later publications in the early seventeenth century.
