TWO BOUND BOOKS containing Issues from the FLORIST AND HORTICULTURE JOURNAL VOLUMES I, II and III. With numerous HAND-COLORED PLATES.

Two Hardcover Books, leather spines and corners with marbled paper covered boards, spines titled in gilt, marbled page edges, marbled endpapers, 6.5x9.5 inches (16x23.5 cm). Pagination by issue. The spines of the two books are titled Volume I and Volume III, though Volume I actually contains issues from Volume I and II, and neither of the Volumes contain a complete run of the year's issues. It appears that the books were bound with the previous owner's favorite issues.

    PHILADELPHIA: Crissy & Markley, Printers, 1852, 1853 and 1854.

The gorgeous plates are what make these works rare and wonderful. As the Publisher writes on the last page of Volume III: "Our Plates are unsurpassed. There is not a work of the kind published in London whose plates are more beautifully executed, certainly not in this country. There are in the Volume just furnished [Volume III], COUNTING EACH DOUBLE PLATE AS TWO, THIRTEEN PLATES, all colored, and of most beautiful subjects. The paper on which the Florist is printed is much superior to that generally for magazines: it is made for us at one of the best mills in the country..."

PLATES INCLUDED IN THE TWO VOLUMES:

VOLUME I (containing issues from Volume I and Volume II) has TWELVE HAND COLORED PLATES (10 single page plates, and 1 double page plate which the Publisher counts as 2).

VOLUME III: Contains TEN HAND COLORED PLATES (of the THIRTEEN called for), (4 single page plates, and 3 double page plates which the Publisher counts as 6)

    The ISSUES in the book titled VOLUME I (containing issues from V.I and V.II), published in 1852 and 1853, are: V.I N.2 TWO PLATES + pgs 33-64; V.1 N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.I N.6 pgs 127-192; V.II N.3 ONE PLATE + pgs 65-96; V.II N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.II N.6 ONE PLATE + pgs 161-192; V.II N.7 ONE PLATE + pgs 193-224; V.II N.8 pgs 218-256 (Publisher's incorrect pagination); V.II N.9 ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 257-288; V.II N.10 ONE PLATE + pgs 289-320; V.II N.11 pgs 321-352; and V.II N.12 TWO PLATES + pgs 354-388. The title page for the hardbound Volume II and the Index are bound in at the rear, pages numbered 389-392.

The hardbound VOLUME III has its overall title page, stating Publisher and the date 1854, but the title pages of the bound-in issues do not show their individual issue numbers or months of publication as did the issues of Volume I and II. The pagination of the issues in Volume III Is: iv; ONE PLATE + pgs 33-64; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 97-128; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 97-128; pgs 193-224; ONE PLATE + pgs 225-256; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 257-288; ONE PLATE + pgs 289-320; and ONE PLATE + pgs 354-380.

All the plates are protected with their original tissue guards.

CONDITION: The covers have scrapes and rubs at the edges, folds and spine ends, but are sturdy, attractive and doing their job well; there is a small previous owner's stamp at the top of a blank prelim of each volume "Pear Hill / J.W."; the early pages and plates of Volume I are age toned; otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked, and the plates are BRILLIANT.

RARE, EARLY AMERICAN FLORIST & HORTICULTURE BOOKS with GORGEOUS HAND-COLORED PLATES.

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: These two books will require additional shipping charges. After placing your order you will be notified of the charges and be able to accept or reject them before payment is taken. Thanks!

About BOUQUETS TO ART at the de Young Museum of San Francisco (compiled from Wikipedia and the book's Introduction): ******Bouquets to Art is an annual floral exhibition hosted by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Florists, designers and garden clubs are invited to present floral interpretations of works in the museums permanent collections, and the floral displays are presented in juxtaposition with the works that inspired them. Originally begun at the de Young Museum in 1984, Bouquets to Art later moved to the Legion of Honor where it flourished from 1996 to 2005. Bouquets to Art returned to the newly reconstructed de Young in 2006 commencing a marvelous new legacy. Bouquets to Art at the de Young showcases work by approximately 150 of the Bay Area's most talented and renowned floral designers. This select group of artists displays original creations ranging in style from the classical to the avant garde. Their floral designs draw inspiration from art pieces in the de Young's permanent collections, and are presented along with art at the Bouquets to Art event. In addition to pairing floral designs with the museum's artworks, the annual exhibition features an extensive program of floral design demonstrations and activities. Since its inception the event has become a cherished San Francisco tradition for both art and flower devotees and draws an avid following from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.******
