(A year later, in 1768, a third volume was issued "La théorie de l'ouie" - "theory of the eye" - which is not here; but this work is complete as originally issued in two volumes in 1767.) TWO VOLUMES. Hardcovers, leather covered boards, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, marbled page edges, marbled endpapers, xcv, [1], 264; lvi, [4], 201-684. (Note that the numbered pages at the end of Volume One and the beginning of Volume Two are not consecutive - i.e. Volume one ends at page number 264, Volume Two begins with page number 201. This is as the Two Volumes were originally published - probable printer's error. Both volumes have been collated by me with rare copies from major National Libraries that have been digitized online.) PRESENTATION COPY. Each Title-Page is INSCRIBED with a HAND-WRITTEN PRESENTATION by THE AUTHOR: "JEAN CHARLES GROSSARD... ex Dono auctoris". CONDITION: TWO BOOKS. The leather covers of both volumes are rubbed and scraped, the spine ends are chipped, the bottom of the spine of Volume Two is peeling, the front spine hinge of each volume is split but holding well; overall the covers are worn but remain attractive and are still doing their job well. Internally, the front pastedown has a long vertical scrape, as if from the removal of a piece of tape at some point. There are relevant handwritten margin notes and marks, in pencil and in English, here and there throughout. I do not know who might have written them, but they are certainly by someone carefully studying the work. The inner pages of both volumes have a bit of toning, foxing and some margin shorelining, here and there throughout, but overall the inner pages are tight, bright and clean, a remarkably well kept, sharp, clear and lovely printing of this scarce book. ILLUSTRATED with 19 ENGRAVED PLATES: ENGRAVED PORTRAIT by Thomiers at the front of Volume One, Lovely FRONTISPIECE ENGRAVING by Bacheley at the front of Volume Two (showing Women using all five senses: Sight - looking in a mirror, Sound - playing music, Taste - pouring wine; Smell - smoke from an incense burner; Touch - toughing a newly hammered helmet); PLUS 17 additional engraved PLATES (16 of which FOLD-OPEN). Also ILLUSTRATED with lovely ENGRAVED VIGNETTES at the head of many chapters, and with ENGRAVED HEAD and TAIL PIECES. This specific work by LE CAT, TRAITÉ DES SENSATIONS ET DES PASSIONS, is VERY SCARCE. About Claude-Nicolas LE CAT (from Wikipedia): ******Le Cat (1700-1768) surgeon, anatomist, & physiologist. In 1736 he established a school for anatomy & surgery in Rouen. The 'Traité Des Sensations Et Des Passions'; is considered to be Le Cat's most important work. The work grew as much out of his researches in physics as in physiology. In it Le Cat presented a theory of the propagation of light contrary to that of Newtonian attraction. He further reported on the pigmented choroid coat of the eye and assigned it a common embryonic origin with the pigment of the skin. Le Cat's reputation in France and Europe is reflected by his numerous academic awards, publications, and by surgical renown.******

    About LOUIS JURINE (from Wikipedia):

******Louis Jurine, b.1751 d.1819, was a Swiss physician, surgeon and naturalist. He lived in Geneva.

He studied surgery in Paris and quickly acquired a great reputation for his expertise in medicine and natural history. He taught courses in anatomy and surgery at the Société des Arts in Geneva and was made honorary professor of zoology at the Academy (today: University of Geneva). He also founded a maternity hospice in 1807 and was awarded prizes for his work on the gasses of the human body, artificial feeding of infants, and pectoral angina.

Upon learning of Spallanzani's experiments with bats, in which Spallanzani showed that bats do not rely on sight when navigating in darkness, Jurine conducted a series of experiments from which he concluded that bats use sound to navigate in darkness. Jurine's collections of Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Hemiptera are in the Natural History Museum of Geneva.******

GOOD Condition: The covers have some peeling of the leather, scrapes, and are worn at the edges and corners; There are several ink ownership signatures on the front free endpaper, a blank prelim, and the title page, the most recent being Albert G. Welch, 1834. The blank front free endpaper has its upper corner area torn off, has a dime size ink splotch (mirrored on the front pastedown), and some offsetting and soiling. The rear blank free endpaper has a quarter size hole, a dime size hole, and offsetting. Both the front and rear endpapers are foxed. There is some light foxing throughout, mainly confined to the margins. Otherwise the inner pages remain tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Overall a solid, nice copy. An important and somewhat forgotten work on Malaria by a Renowned Scottish Geologist. About JOHN MACCULLOCH (excerpted from various online medical journals including the Cambridge Journal of Medical History, 1977): ******JOHN MACCULLOCH, M.D., F.R.S. (1773-1835), THE PRECURSOR OF THE DISCIPLINE OF MALARIOLOGY. The first time the term 'malaria' was used in an English scientific publication was in 1827 in a book by John Macculloch. Though renowned as one of the prominent, early British geologists, his works on "Marsh Fever" make him one of the first English physicians to develop the field of Malariology. His works on Malaria, though rather forgotten, were at the time both important and groundbreaking. (footnoted: In the eleventh edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, the following entry will be found: "Malaria, an Italian colloquial word introduced into English medical literature by Macculloch in 1827, as a substitute for the more restricted terms marsh miasm or paludal poison." See also H. Scott, "A History of Tropical Medicine"; and PF. Russell "Man's Mastery of Malaria".) There is a long Wikipedia page about John Macculloch's many important geological works, but Wikipedia does not mention a word about his medical studies.******

About FÉLIX-ARCHIMÈDE POUCHET (from Wikipedia): ******Félix Archimède Pouchet (b. 1800 d. 1872) was a French naturalist and a LEADING PROPONENT of the SPONTANEOUS GENERATION of LIFE from

NON LIVING MATERIALS, and as such an opponent of Louis Pasteur's germ theory. From 1828 he was director of the Rouen Jardin des Plantes. In 1838 he became professor at the School of Medicine at Rouen. In 1847, Pouchet effectively launched the study of the physiology of cytology. His major scientific work Hétérogénie was published in 1859. He also wrote a layperson's encyclopedia The Universe, published in 1870, which gives an overview of the sciences, but in which Pouchet ridicules Louis Pasteur's theories. Pouchet was 60 years old while Louis Pasteur was 37 years old when the heart of the debate about spontaneous generation began. Their opinions on generation originated from two competing theories. Pouchet believed in HETEROGENESIS, which assumed that NEW LIVING ORGANISMS CAME FROM INANIMATE OBJECTS, SUCH AS AIR. The parents of these new organisms were not the same species as the new organism. Pasteur supported the germ theory that said microorganisms arose from germs and those microorganisms came from parents of the same species. He supported the idea that germs were mostly everywhere, including things like air and those germs explained the appearance of microorganisms on different inanimate things.****** You can read much more about Félix-Archimède Pouchet on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet. I believe this is the perfect time to bring the SPONTANEOUS GENERATION OF LIFE theory back to life, given our ruling government no longer believes in real science.

About Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg (from Wikipedia, roughly translated from the German by Google):

    ******Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg, b.1871 d.1936,

was a German bacteriologist and first director of the Bacteriological Institute at the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy.

From 1897 he was employed in the vinegar department at the Institute of Fermentation in Berlin. From 1906 he headed the bacteriological department of the technical scientific laboratory of the Institute of Fermentation. In 1922 he was appointed to Kiel to head the Bacteriological Institute of the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy Farming. In the eleven years as a university professor in Kiel, he supervised more than 80 dissertations and wrote several textbooks on the bacteriology of milk. Henneberg initiated the founding of the Federation of Technical Bacteriologists .

For bacteriological diagnostics, Henneberg invented new methods of investigation, such as the Chinese blue water agar developed especially for dairy farming, the spring stick culture and the cover glass agar method.

In his last years he devoted himself to the study of the saprophyte flora of the intestine and the human intestinal flora, in particular their conversion by the consumption of dairy products such as yoghurt and acidophilus milk.******

This Master Plan...(is) a vehicle for communicating identified needs and preferred methods of resolving those needs. The information presented in this document is grouped into three general parts: 1) background information regarding the nature of the facility, services provided, history of growth, and description of the physical plant; 2) development plans for future growth; and 3) a study of the transportation circulation and parking needs of the facility."

Pages printed on one side only. An interesting book of abstracts of papers written by Scientists working at the FDA in the period 1930-1961. Includes abstracts for all sorts of scientific inquiries of interest to the FDA, including studies on Vitamins, DDT, DDD, Fish Oils, Whale Pituitaries, Cosmetics, Skin Absorption, Insulin, Insecticides, Food Toxicities, Sweeteners, Fat Storage, Shellfish Poisons, Additives, Nitrates In Cattle Rumen, and many more. COPY OF THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION, with an FDA blindstamp on the title page, an ink stamp stating: "Scientific Director / Jan 12 1962 / FDA Received DHEW (Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare)" on the front free endpaper, and a DHEW label glued onto the title page. Ex the FDA Pharmacology Library. The front free endpaper has the handwritten statement: "Division of Pharmacology Library", there is a shelving number written on the spine, and there is a card pocket on the rear pastedown. VERY GOOD Condition: Ex FDA Pharmacology Library, as noted above. Ex lib aside, just lightly used, a bit of light blue staining to the front page edges (page edges of the closed book), otherwise still tight, bright, and clean. A solid, presentable copy. RARE. I cannot find another copy online, the OCLC does not list a copy, and I have never seen another copy. It is possible this is a one off produced for the FDA, or a very limited printing. The pages are printed on one side only and many of the pages have a mimeograph or carbon copy type look to them, there is a chart on the very last page that is hand pasted on and a DHEW label on the title page that is pasted on. Plus, this copy was deaccessioned from the FDA DHEW Pharmacology Library, where, if it was a one off or very limited printing, is where you would expect it to be found. I do not know for certain, of course, if this is a one off or very limited printing; all I know is that, as of this writing, I cannot locate another copy and have never seen another copy. An important resource for anyone interested in early FDA research.
