To which are added, Explanatory and Practical Notes, from the Best Medicinal Writers...by John Swan, M.D.

LONDON: Printed by E. Cave at St. John's Gate, 1753. Third Edition.

Hardcovers, leather covered boards, 5x8 inches, 672 pages + Index at the rear.

CONDITION: Front and rear covers are detached but present, the leather spine covering is present, the covers and spine are rubbed and worn; internally the front free endpaper is loose, chipped, and has a very tender vertical fold-partial tear that runs through the inscription (holding now but give it a tug and it is a full tear), there is foxing and toning throughout, most noticeably on the early pages, light on most pages; the text is clear throughout and the pages are complete from the title page through the last page of the Index which ends with "FINIS"; the rear pastedown has some numbers written on it. Overall a textually complete copy with interesting early American provenance. Deserving of loving restoration.

PROVENANCE of Moses Brown, Jacob Maine (aka Jacob Main), and Thomas Wistar Brown. Early Americans, Physicians and Philanthropists.

The bookplate of "T. WISTAR BROWN" (Thomas Wistar Brown) is on the front pastedown. An early inscription, unsigned, is on the loose front free endpaper; it reads: "A present from my deceased friend Doctor Jacob Main - he presented me this book in the Spring of the year 1807 but little time before his death - He was my friend, faithful and just to me." At the top of the title page there are the signatures of "JACOB MAIN / 1802" and "MOSES BROWN / 1807", and an inked out signature.

About JACOB MAINE, aka MAIN (excerpted from an 1879 report on the early Doctors of New Hampshire):

******Dr. Jacob Maine, b.1772 d.1807, son of Josiah, and grandson of Rev. Amos Main, the first minister of Rochester, N. H., was born in Rochester; was graduated from Harvard College in 1800, studied medicine with Dr. Ammi R. Cutter, of Portsmouth, N. H.. married Sarah Ann, daughter of his preceptor and began the practice of medicine in Dover, in 1803. In addition to his medical practice, he kept an apothecary store on Main street. He died in Dover, of consumption, at the age of 35.******

About MOSES BROWN (from an Internet ancestry site):

******Moses Brown, b.1793 d.1878, married Mary Wistar, b.1807 d.1842. Mary was the sister of Caspar Wistar M.D., b.1801 d.1867, and the daughter of Thomas Wistar, b.1764 d.1851, and Mary Waln Wistar, b.1765 d.1844. Moses and Mary's children were Thomas Wistar Brown, b.1826 d.1916, Moses Brown, b.1829 d.1883, and Mary W. Brown, b.1831 d.1839.******

About THOMAS WISTAR BROWN (from the Bryn Mawr / Haverford College Library website - where his archives are held):

(A year later, in 1768, a third volume was issued "La théorie de l'ouie" - "theory of the eye" - which is not here; but this work is complete as originally issued in two volumes in 1767.) TWO VOLUMES. Hardcovers, leather covered boards, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, marbled page edges, marbled endpapers, xcv, [1], 264; lvi, [4], 201-684. (Note that the numbered pages at the end of Volume One and the beginning of Volume Two are not consecutive - i.e. Volume one ends at page number 264, Volume Two begins with page number 201. This is as the Two Volumes were originally published - probable printer's error. Both volumes have been collated by me with rare copies from major National Libraries that have been digitized online.) PRESENTATION COPY. Each Title-Page is INSCRIBED with a HAND-WRITTEN PRESENTATION by THE AUTHOR: "JEAN CHARLES GROSSARD... ex Dono auctoris". CONDITION: TWO BOOKS. The leather covers of both volumes are rubbed and scraped, the spine ends are chipped, the bottom of the spine of Volume Two is peeling, the front spine hinge of each volume is split but holding well; overall the covers are worn but remain attractive and are still doing their job well. Internally, the front pastedown has a long vertical scrape, as if from the removal of a piece of tape at some point. There are relevant handwritten margin notes and marks, in pencil and in English, here and there throughout. I do not know who might have written them, but they are certainly by someone carefully studying the work. The inner pages of both volumes have a bit of toning, foxing and some margin shorelining, here and there throughout, but overall the inner pages are tight, bright and clean, a remarkably well kept, sharp, clear and lovely printing of this scarce book. ILLUSTRATED with 19 ENGRAVED PLATES: ENGRAVED PORTRAIT by Thomiers at the front of Volume One, Lovely FRONTISPIECE ENGRAVING by Bacheley at the front of Volume Two (showing Women using all five senses: Sight - looking in a mirror, Sound - playing music, Taste - pouring wine; Smell - smoke from an incense burner; Touch - toughing a newly hammered helmet); PLUS 17 additional engraved PLATES (16 of which FOLD-OPEN). Also ILLUSTRATED with lovely ENGRAVED VIGNETTES at the head of many chapters, and with ENGRAVED HEAD and TAIL PIECES. This specific work by LE CAT, TRAITÉ DES SENSATIONS ET DES PASSIONS, is VERY SCARCE. About Claude-Nicolas LE CAT (from Wikipedia): ******Le Cat (1700-1768) surgeon, anatomist, & physiologist. In 1736 he established a school for anatomy & surgery in Rouen. The 'Traité Des Sensations Et Des Passions'; is considered to be Le Cat's most important work. The work grew as much out of his researches in physics as in physiology. In it Le Cat presented a theory of the propagation of light contrary to that of Newtonian attraction. He further reported on the pigmented choroid coat of the eye and assigned it a common embryonic origin with the pigment of the skin. Le Cat's reputation in France and Europe is reflected by his numerous academic awards, publications, and by surgical renown.******

    About LOUIS JURINE (from Wikipedia):

******Louis Jurine, b.1751 d.1819, was a Swiss physician, surgeon and naturalist. He lived in Geneva.

He studied surgery in Paris and quickly acquired a great reputation for his expertise in medicine and natural history. He taught courses in anatomy and surgery at the Société des Arts in Geneva and was made honorary professor of zoology at the Academy (today: University of Geneva). He also founded a maternity hospice in 1807 and was awarded prizes for his work on the gasses of the human body, artificial feeding of infants, and pectoral angina.

Upon learning of Spallanzani's experiments with bats, in which Spallanzani showed that bats do not rely on sight when navigating in darkness, Jurine conducted a series of experiments from which he concluded that bats use sound to navigate in darkness. Jurine's collections of Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Hemiptera are in the Natural History Museum of Geneva.******

    About MATHIEU ORFILA (from Wikipedia):

******Mathieu Joseph Bonaventure Orfila, b.1787 d.1853, was a Spanish toxicologist and chemist, the founder of the science of toxicology.

If there is reason to believe that a murder or attempted murder may have been committed using poison, a forensic toxicologist is often engaged to examine pieces of evidence such as corpses and food items for poison content. In Orfila's time the primary type of poison in use was arsenic, but there were not any reliable ways of testing for its presence. Orfila created new techniques, refined existing techniques and described them in his first treatise, TRAITÉ DES POISONS, Paris, 1813, (TREATMENT OF PERSONS WHO TOOK POISON first American edition, 1819).******

About FÉLIX-ARCHIMÈDE POUCHET (from Wikipedia): ******Félix Archimède Pouchet (b. 1800 d. 1872) was a French naturalist and a LEADING PROPONENT of the SPONTANEOUS GENERATION of LIFE from

NON LIVING MATERIALS, and as such an opponent of Louis Pasteur's germ theory. From 1828 he was director of the Rouen Jardin des Plantes. In 1838 he became professor at the School of Medicine at Rouen. In 1847, Pouchet effectively launched the study of the physiology of cytology. His major scientific work Hétérogénie was published in 1859. He also wrote a layperson's encyclopedia The Universe, published in 1870, which gives an overview of the sciences, but in which Pouchet ridicules Louis Pasteur's theories. Pouchet was 60 years old while Louis Pasteur was 37 years old when the heart of the debate about spontaneous generation began. Their opinions on generation originated from two competing theories. Pouchet believed in HETEROGENESIS, which assumed that NEW LIVING ORGANISMS CAME FROM INANIMATE OBJECTS, SUCH AS AIR. The parents of these new organisms were not the same species as the new organism. Pasteur supported the germ theory that said microorganisms arose from germs and those microorganisms came from parents of the same species. He supported the idea that germs were mostly everywhere, including things like air and those germs explained the appearance of microorganisms on different inanimate things.****** You can read much more about Félix-Archimède Pouchet on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet. I believe this is the perfect time to bring the SPONTANEOUS GENERATION OF LIFE theory back to life, given our ruling government no longer believes in real science.

    About O.S. FOWLER (from Wikipedia):

******Orson Squire Fowler, b.1809 d.1887, was an American phrenologist and lecturer. He also popularized the octagon house in the middle of the nineteenth century.

With his brother Lorenzo Niles Fowler, he opened a phrenological office in New York City and soon they became the foremost proponents of phrenology in the United States. Orson wrote and lectured on phrenology, preservation of health, popular education and social reform.

O.S. Fowler held forth for the equality for women at a time when women had virtually no legal rights, championed children's rights at a time when child labor was widespread, and through his publications called for the end of slavery which he called a "monstrous evil".

HOWEVER, MANY OF HIS PHRENOLOGICAL BELIEFS WERE ABHORRENT and were used to justify slavery and advance a belief in African-American inferiority. Based on his phrenological views, Fowler wrote that coarse hair correlated with coarse fibers in the brain, and indicated coarse feelings that, he wrote, suggested people of African descent had poor verbal skills and traits that were best suited for nursing children or waiting on tables. Fowler was also known to be antisemitic.

Fowler was a teetotaler and vegetarian. He promoted a vegetarian diet in his book Physiology: Animal and Mental and was vice-president of the American Vegetarian Society in 1852. He defended animal rights and opposed the slaughter of animals. His magazine The American Phrenological Journal also supported vegetarianism.******

Previously owned by the 19th century New York physician Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh, with his ink stamp on a number of pages: "Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh / Physician and Notary Public / Sharon, N.Y.". An Internet search indicates Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh was a member of the "Eclectic Medical Society of New York" in the late 1800s.

Also previously owned by Gilbert R. Seigworth, MD, b.1932 d.2019, with his ownership label on the front free-endpaper: "Gilbert R. Seigworth, MD / Vestal, New York". An Internet search indicates Dr. Seigworth was an avid collector of antique medical equipment and antiquarian medical books.

CONDITION: The original covers are worn and not pretty - rubbed, scraped, stained, frayed at the spine ends, and splitting for 2 inches at the front fold; nonetheless they are solid and doing their job. Internally nice, the front and rear inner hinges are cracked but holding well, the thin endpapers have some light creasing, the text pages are lightly age toned as normal, otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid, complete, copy with well-worn but original covers.

ORIGINAL 1882 EDITION with interesting provenance.

Yes, electric shock therapy is making a comeback, but who knew

    it could cure everything!

About AUGUSTINE CHRISTINE HAUB (from Woman's Medical Journal - A Monthly Journal Published in the Interests of Women Physicians, August, 1914):

******Dr Augustine Catherine Haub died November 13, 1913, at her place of residence on Beacon Street in Boston after a painful illness of nine months. She was 33. She was born in Gold Hill, Nevada, September 19, 1870. She graduated from Boston University Medical School in 1893. She served as an intern [at the Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital, Boston] the year after her graduation and showed a marked aptitude for surgical work. About Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg (from Wikipedia, roughly translated from the German by Google):

    ******Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg, b.1871 d.1936,

was a German bacteriologist and first director of the Bacteriological Institute at the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy.

From 1906 he headed the bacteriological department of the technical scientific laboratory of the Institute of Fermentation. In 1922 he was appointed to Kiel to head the Bacteriological Institute of the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy Farming. In the eleven years as a university professor in Kiel, he supervised more than 80 dissertations and wrote several textbooks on the bacteriology of milk. Henneberg initiated the founding of the Federation of Technical Bacteriologists .

For bacteriological diagnostics, Henneberg invented new methods of investigation, such as the Chinese blue water agar developed especially for dairy farming, the spring stick culture and the cover glass agar method.

In his last years he devoted himself to the study of the saprophyte flora of the intestine and the human intestinal flora, in particular their conversion by the consumption of dairy products such as yoghurt and acidophilus milk.******

From the Executive Summary: "This Institutional Master Plan for the San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center, submitted to the City and County of San Francisco, is a record of the Hospital's growth needs and development plans for the future as they are currently defined. This Master Plan...(is) a vehicle for communicating identified needs and preferred methods of resolving those needs. The information presented in this document is grouped into three general parts: 1) background information regarding the nature of the facility, services provided, history of growth, and description of the physical plant; 2) development plans for future growth; and 3) a study of the transportation circulation and parking needs of the facility."

An interesting look at the expansion plans for San Francisco General Hospital as they were envisioned in 1978.
