HUNDREDS (550+) of HANDWRITTEN FORMULAS for CREATING PRODUCTS for TREATING WOMEN'S BEAUTY "DEFECTS" and for INCREASING A WOMAN'S BEAUTY. Handwritten by an unnamed Chemist or Pharmacist likely as a Book of Formulas Reference Guide.

Undated, however it is likely the formulas were written circa 1890. There are several note sheets "Hazard, Hazard & Co." letterheads laid-in at the front (Hazard, Hazard & Co. was active in the mid to late 1800s); the title page of the Burr's Medical Index in which the formulas are written is dated "Hartford, 1881"; the bookseller's label on the front pastedown states "Agent for The Henry Bill Publishing Company's Physicians' Account Books" - Henry Bill Publishing was founded in 1847 and dissolved in 1896.

Are you a woman with Freckles, Moles, Dark Spots, Warts, Bad Breath, Wrinkles, Dandruff, too much Hair, too little Hair, etc.? Do you need help making your breasts bigger, smaller, or firmer? Is your nose red and oily? Want darker eyebrows, want prettier eyebrows, want prettier eyes? Want to smell prettier, better, or just not stink? Want your face to be lighter, brighter, shinier, and your lips redder, fuller, and more delicious looking? This book has detailed formulas that can be prepared for you, products that will take care of all those, and hundreds of other beauty defects!!!

The detailed formulas are handwritten in a BURR'S MEDICAL INDEX, published by the J. B. Burr Publishing Co., Hartford, Connecticut, 1881. Likely by a chemist or pharmacist who would prepare a cream, lotion, spray, etc., based on the detailed formulas in this book.

Hardcovers, leather spine and corners with green cloth covered boards, 8.5x11 inches, filled with approximately 400 pages, indexed with alphabetical tabs. There are approximately 575 formulas for preparing beautification remedies for women, handwritten on 122 of the pages and arranged alphabetically for easy access by the chemist / pharmacist. The rest of the pages are blank.

Laid-in here and there are various slips of paper with handwritten ingredients and a couple relevant newspaper articles ("WILL POWER GROWS HAIR"; "Removal of Tattoo Marks"). The slips of paper and news articles have browned the pages they were inserted between, but the handwritten text remains bright and clear.

Laid-in at the front are three note sheets with the letterhead "Hazard, Hazard & Co., New York". The note sheets have lists of items, perhaps lotions being prepared by Hazard, Hazard & Co.

The formulas are handwritten in ink and arranged alphabetically within the tabs: e.g. within the "A" tab on page "AM" is a long formula for creating "Amandine Skin Cosmetic to Whiten and Soften the Skin"; on page "AP" are formulas for "Aphrodisiac Pastiles"; within the "B" tab on pages "BA" are lots of formulas for various "Bath Aromatics"; on page "BR" are formulas for increasing or decreasing the size of breasts, and lots of formulas for bad breath; within the "C" tab on pages "CO" are various formulas for "Complexion"; within the "F" tab on pages "FA" are formulas for various Face Creams and Face Beautifiers, on page FE are formulas for "FEET OFFENSIVE" and "FETID FEET", on pages "FR" are many formulas dealing with Freckles; etc. etc.

Handwritten on the backside of the front free endpaper is what seems to be the ""Raison d'Etre" for the formulas in this book:

******To be beautiful is the unwritten law of woman.. it is womans right and privilege to do all in her power to add to the bounteous gifts with which nature has endowed her..."

GOOD CONDITION: The covers have wear, some water staining, and have been professionally rebacked with portions of the original spine covering laid on; internally nice, some pages with browning from laid-in relevant paper items, otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear.

A wonderful, c.1890 manuscript "Book of Formulas" aimed at women who, according to this book, need help to fix and beautify every single part of their body.

WOUNDED SOLDIER'S WWI FRENCH HOSPITAL PHOTO ALBUM - YVETOT HOPITAL DE L'ALLIANCE c.1914. Likely the album of JOSEPH BROSSARD, 7th ZOUAVE BATAILLON, 6th Compagnie, who apparently spent time at the hospital recovering from wounds. There are two handmade cards related to him in the album.

There are twelve (12) photographs of nurses, patients and various other shots taken inside the hospital, varying in size from 2.75x4.75 to 4.75x5.75 inches. There are also six (6) other photographs of people who appear unrelated to the hospital, a man sowing seeds, a mother and child, two men in old traditional garb, a portrait of a woman who appears to be a matriarch of some sort, etc.

There are also two handmade cards laid-in. One card has the name of a soldier: Joseph Brossard, 7th Zouave, 6th Battalion, along with a bit of writing in French; and the other card - somewhat tattered - also has the name Joseph Brossard, and a decorative title: "Souvenir de 1914-1915".

These are unique photos of the Nurses and Patients at the Yvetot Hospital during WWI, plus two "I was there" handmade cards of one of the wounded soldiers whose album this likely was. Though real photo postcards of the Yvetot hospital can be found, these original photographs are unique.

GOOD condition: A few of the photographs are lightly faded, most are bright and sharp. The loose photo of two men in traditional garb has some tears. One of the handmade, hand colored, personal cards is in GOOD condition, solid but showing some age, the other card is torn and ragged along the edges but still lovely and informative.

A unique item related to the important WWI Yvetot Hospital, and Joseph Brossard of the infamous Zouave Battalions.

    About MATHIEU ORFILA (from Wikipedia):

******Mathieu Joseph Bonaventure Orfila, b.1787 d.1853, was a Spanish toxicologist and chemist, the founder of the science of toxicology.

If there is reason to believe that a murder or attempted murder may have been committed using poison, a forensic toxicologist is often engaged to examine pieces of evidence such as corpses and food items for poison content. In Orfila's time the primary type of poison in use was arsenic, but there were not any reliable ways of testing for its presence. Orfila created new techniques, refined existing techniques and described them in his first treatise, TRAITÉ DES POISONS, Paris, 1813, (TREATMENT OF PERSONS WHO TOOK POISON first American edition, 1819).******

About Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg (from Wikipedia, roughly translated from the German by Google):

    ******Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg, b.1871 d.1936,

was a German bacteriologist and first director of the Bacteriological Institute at the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy.

From 1897 he was employed in the vinegar department at the Institute of Fermentation in Berlin. From 1906 he headed the bacteriological department of the technical scientific laboratory of the Institute of Fermentation. In 1922 he was appointed to Kiel to head the Bacteriological Institute of the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy Farming. In the eleven years as a university professor in Kiel, he supervised more than 80 dissertations and wrote several textbooks on the bacteriology of milk. Henneberg initiated the founding of the Federation of Technical Bacteriologists .

For bacteriological diagnostics, Henneberg invented new methods of investigation, such as the Chinese blue water agar developed especially for dairy farming, the spring stick culture and the cover glass agar method.

In his last years he devoted himself to the study of the saprophyte flora of the intestine and the human intestinal flora, in particular their conversion by the consumption of dairy products such as yoghurt and acidophilus milk.******

    About LOUIS JURINE (from Wikipedia):

******Louis Jurine, b.1751 d.1819, was a Swiss physician, surgeon and naturalist. He lived in Geneva.

He studied surgery in Paris and quickly acquired a great reputation for his expertise in medicine and natural history. He taught courses in anatomy and surgery at the Société des Arts in Geneva and was made honorary professor of zoology at the Academy (today: University of Geneva). He also founded a maternity hospice in 1807 and was awarded prizes for his work on the gasses of the human body, artificial feeding of infants, and pectoral angina.

Upon learning of Spallanzani's experiments with bats, in which Spallanzani showed that bats do not rely on sight when navigating in darkness, Jurine conducted a series of experiments from which he concluded that bats use sound to navigate in darkness. Jurine's collections of Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Hemiptera are in the Natural History Museum of Geneva.******

This Two Volume 1847 First Edition Set with the ORIGINAL ATLAS with its 20 HAND COLORED PLATES is SCARCE. About FÉLIX-ARCHIMÈDE POUCHET (from Wikipedia): ******Félix Archimède Pouchet (b. 1800 d. 1872) was a French naturalist and a LEADING PROPONENT of the SPONTANEOUS GENERATION of LIFE from

NON LIVING MATERIALS, and as such an opponent of Louis Pasteur's germ theory. From 1828 he was director of the Rouen Jardin des Plantes. In 1838 he became professor at the School of Medicine at Rouen. In 1847, Pouchet effectively launched the study of the physiology of cytology. His major scientific work Hétérogénie was published in 1859. He also wrote a layperson's encyclopedia The Universe, published in 1870, which gives an overview of the sciences, but in which Pouchet ridicules Louis Pasteur's theories. Pouchet was 60 years old while Louis Pasteur was 37 years old when the heart of the debate about spontaneous generation began. Their opinions on generation originated from two competing theories. Pouchet believed in HETEROGENESIS, which assumed that NEW LIVING ORGANISMS CAME FROM INANIMATE OBJECTS, SUCH AS AIR. The parents of these new organisms were not the same species as the new organism. Pasteur supported the germ theory that said microorganisms arose from germs and those microorganisms came from parents of the same species. He supported the idea that germs were mostly everywhere, including things like air and those germs explained the appearance of microorganisms on different inanimate things.****** You can read much more about Félix-Archimède Pouchet on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet. I believe this is the perfect time to bring the SPONTANEOUS GENERATION OF LIFE theory back to life, given our ruling government no longer believes in real science.

This is as the Two Volumes were originally published - probable printer's error. Both volumes have been collated by me with rare copies from major National Libraries that have been digitized online.) PRESENTATION COPY. Each Title-Page is INSCRIBED with a HAND-WRITTEN PRESENTATION by THE AUTHOR: "JEAN CHARLES GROSSARD... ex Dono auctoris". CONDITION: TWO BOOKS. The leather covers of both volumes are rubbed and scraped, the spine ends are chipped, the bottom of the spine of Volume Two is peeling, the front spine hinge of each volume is split but holding well; overall the covers are worn but remain attractive and are still doing their job well. Internally, the front pastedown has a long vertical scrape, as if from the removal of a piece of tape at some point. I do not know who might have written them, but they are certainly by someone carefully studying the work. The inner pages of both volumes have a bit of toning, foxing and some margin shorelining, here and there throughout, but overall the inner pages are tight, bright and clean, a remarkably well kept, sharp, clear and lovely printing of this scarce book. ILLUSTRATED with 19 ENGRAVED PLATES: ENGRAVED PORTRAIT by Thomiers at the front of Volume One, Lovely FRONTISPIECE ENGRAVING by Bacheley at the front of Volume Two (showing Women using all five senses: Sight - looking in a mirror, Sound - playing music, Taste - pouring wine; Smell - smoke from an incense burner; Touch - toughing a newly hammered helmet); PLUS 17 additional engraved PLATES (16 of which FOLD-OPEN). In 1736 he established a school for anatomy & surgery in Rouen. The 'Traité Des Sensations Et Des Passions'; is considered to be Le Cat's most important work. The work grew as much out of his researches in physics as in physiology. In it Le Cat presented a theory of the propagation of light contrary to that of Newtonian attraction. He further reported on the pigmented choroid coat of the eye and assigned it a common embryonic origin with the pigment of the skin. Le Cat's reputation in France and Europe is reflected by his numerous academic awards, publications, and by surgical renown.******
