WOUNDED SOLDIER'S WWI FRENCH HOSPITAL PHOTO ALBUM - YVETOT HOPITAL DE L'ALLIANCE c.1914. Likely the album of JOSEPH BROSSARD, 7th ZOUAVE BATAILLON, 6th Compagnie, who apparently spent time at the hospital recovering from wounds. There are two handmade cards related to him in the album.

Flexible covers, decorated cloth, cord bound, 7x9 inches (18x23.5 cm) oblong, photos mounted on heavy stock leaves, most with tissue guards, approximately 24 leaves (48 pages). There are 18 photographs plus two handmade cards. Most of the photos are glued-in, the cards are laid-in. Twenty of the album's pages have photos or cards, the rest are blank.

There are twelve (12) photographs of nurses, patients and various other shots taken inside the hospital, varying in size from 2.75x4.75 to 4.75x5.75 inches. There are also six (6) other photographs of people who appear unrelated to the hospital, a man sowing seeds, a mother and child, two men in old traditional garb, a portrait of a woman who appears to be a matriarch of some sort, etc.

There are also two handmade cards laid-in. One card has the name of a soldier: Joseph Brossard, 7th Zouave, 6th Battalion, along with a bit of writing in French; and the other card - somewhat tattered - also has the name Joseph Brossard, and a decorative title: "Souvenir de 1914-1915".

These are unique photos of the Nurses and Patients at the Yvetot Hospital during WWI, plus two "I was there" handmade cards of one of the wounded soldiers whose album this likely was. Though real photo postcards of the Yvetot hospital can be found, these original photographs are unique.

GOOD condition: A few of the photographs are lightly faded, most are bright and sharp. The loose photo of two men in traditional garb has some tears. One of the handmade, hand colored, personal cards is in GOOD condition, solid but showing some age, the other card is torn and ragged along the edges but still lovely and informative.

A unique item related to the important WWI Yvetot Hospital, and Joseph Brossard of the infamous Zouave Battalions.

Previously owned by the 19th century New York physician Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh, with his ink stamp on a number of pages: "Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh / Physician and Notary Public / Sharon, N.Y.". An Internet search indicates Dr. J. Van Valkenburgh was a member of the "Eclectic Medical Society of New York" in the late 1800s.

Also previously owned by Gilbert R. Seigworth, MD, b.1932 d.2019, with his ownership label on the front free-endpaper: "Gilbert R. Seigworth, MD / Vestal, New York". An Internet search indicates Dr. Seigworth was an avid collector of antique medical equipment and antiquarian medical books.

CONDITION: The original covers are worn and not pretty - rubbed, scraped, stained, frayed at the spine ends, and splitting for 2 inches at the front fold; nonetheless they are solid and doing their job. Internally nice, the front and rear inner hinges are cracked but holding well, the thin endpapers have some light creasing, the text pages are lightly age toned as normal, otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid, complete, copy with well-worn but original covers.

ORIGINAL 1882 EDITION with interesting provenance.

Yes, electric shock therapy is making a comeback, but who knew

    it could cure everything!

SCARCE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of this IMPORTANT WORK on TOXICOLOGY.

    About MATHIEU ORFILA (from Wikipedia):

******Mathieu Joseph Bonaventure Orfila, b.1787 d.1853, was a Spanish toxicologist and chemist, the founder of the science of toxicology.

If there is reason to believe that a murder or attempted murder may have been committed using poison, a forensic toxicologist is often engaged to examine pieces of evidence such as corpses and food items for poison content. In Orfila's time the primary type of poison in use was arsenic, but there were not any reliable ways of testing for its presence. Orfila created new techniques, refined existing techniques and described them in his first treatise, TRAITÉ DES POISONS, Paris, 1813, (TREATMENT OF PERSONS WHO TOOK POISON first American edition, 1819).******

A TREASURE TROVE OF NORTH CAROLINA, ROWAN COUNTY, GENEALOGY!

About DR. HILDA BAILEY (from her Obituary):

******Dr. Hilda Hart Bailey, b.1921 d.2018, was the first woman pediatrician in Salisbury, NC. Dr. Bailey owned a private pediatric medical practice in Salisbury for close to 50 years.

Dr. Bailey attended UNC School of Medicine from 1942-1944. She transferred to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1944, where she received her medical degree in 1946 at the age of 24.

Dr. Bailey entered the North Carolina university system and its medical school during a time when women students had very limited opportunities in Chapel Hill.

(Women in the 1940s encountered many barriers when trying to enter medical school. The average quota for women medical students in 1941 was 5 percent nationally. Women gained a foothold in medical schools during the early 1940s because World War II called men to service. The number of hospitals accepting women interns increased by 400% from 105 in 1941 to 463 at the end of 1942. As easily as the barriers were lowered during the war, they were once again raised after the war. In 1945, women physicians were removed from hospital staff to make room for returning male veterans. By the fall of 1946, a full page advertisement appeared in the New York Herald Tribune under the caption: "Doctors Wanted: No Women Need Apply." Nationally, the period from 1949 to approximately 1960 has been called the "era of hostility" for women in medicine.)

In 1952, during the height of the polio epidemic, Dr. Bailey opened her private pediatric practice in Salisbury. The only other pediatrician in Salisbury at the time, Dr. William Kavanagh, ended his practice soon after Dr. Bailey opened hers.

Dr. Bailey's dedication to children endeared her to Rowan County families and nursing staff. A hospitalized child received her tireless attention. She was sometimes seen rocking an unhappy hospitalized child, even if the child was not her patient. Every parent of her "children" has at least one Dr. Bailey story, some of them bordering on heroism.******

(You can read her full obituary online by searching "Dr. Hilda Bailey obituary".)

About Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg (from Wikipedia, roughly translated from the German by Google):

    ******Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg, b.1871 d.1936,

was a German bacteriologist and first director of the Bacteriological Institute at the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy.

From 1897 he was employed in the vinegar department at the Institute of Fermentation in Berlin. From 1906 he headed the bacteriological department of the technical scientific laboratory of the Institute of Fermentation. In 1922 he was appointed to Kiel to head the Bacteriological Institute of the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy Farming. In the eleven years as a university professor in Kiel, he supervised more than 80 dissertations and wrote several textbooks on the bacteriology of milk. Henneberg initiated the founding of the Federation of Technical Bacteriologists .

For bacteriological diagnostics, Henneberg invented new methods of investigation, such as the Chinese blue water agar developed especially for dairy farming, the spring stick culture and the cover glass agar method.

In his last years he devoted himself to the study of the saprophyte flora of the intestine and the human intestinal flora, in particular their conversion by the consumption of dairy products such as yoghurt and acidophilus milk.******

    About LOUIS JURINE (from Wikipedia):

******Louis Jurine, b.1751 d.1819, was a Swiss physician, surgeon and naturalist. He lived in Geneva.

He studied surgery in Paris and quickly acquired a great reputation for his expertise in medicine and natural history. He taught courses in anatomy and surgery at the Société des Arts in Geneva and was made honorary professor of zoology at the Academy (today: University of Geneva). He also founded a maternity hospice in 1807 and was awarded prizes for his work on the gasses of the human body, artificial feeding of infants, and pectoral angina.

Upon learning of Spallanzani's experiments with bats, in which Spallanzani showed that bats do not rely on sight when navigating in darkness, Jurine conducted a series of experiments from which he concluded that bats use sound to navigate in darkness. Jurine's collections of Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Hemiptera are in the Natural History Museum of Geneva.******

He also wrote a layperson's encyclopedia The Universe, published in 1870, which gives an overview of the sciences, but in which Pouchet ridicules Louis Pasteur's theories. Pouchet was 60 years old while Louis Pasteur was 37 years old when the heart of the debate about spontaneous generation began. Their opinions on generation originated from two competing theories. Pouchet believed in HETEROGENESIS, which assumed that NEW LIVING ORGANISMS CAME FROM INANIMATE OBJECTS, SUCH AS AIR. The parents of these new organisms were not the same species as the new organism. Pasteur supported the germ theory that said microorganisms arose from germs and those microorganisms came from parents of the same species. He supported the idea that germs were mostly everywhere, including things like air and those germs explained the appearance of microorganisms on different inanimate things.****** You can read much more about Félix-Archimède Pouchet on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet. I believe this is the perfect time to bring the SPONTANEOUS GENERATION OF LIFE theory back to life, given our ruling government no longer believes in real science.
