During the Serbs war against the Bosniaks, the University of Sarajevo found itself torn in two. The Serb nationals who were part of the University either left or joined the Serbian aggressors, while the Bosniaks stayed to fight and to try to keep the University operating. The siege of the University of Sarajevo lasted 1479 days.

VERY GOOD condition, cover corner tips are bumped, otherwise tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A solid, nice, very presentable copy.

******About half the professors, lecturers and employees of the University of Sarajevo turned their backs on the University at the beginning of the Bosnian war in April 1992. Most of them had Serb nationality. Many fled the city to save themselves and their families, but a considerable number joined the Serb besiegers and supported the siege. This is the sobering conclusion of the book "1479 days - Siege of University of Sarajevo", which was prepared by scholars of the University and presented to the public in the Bosnian capital. In spite of the constant shelling, in spite of the snipers, in spite of hunger and cold, training and teaching were maintained by the professors and students who stayed at the risk of their lives.******

Filled with remembrances, signatures, and drawings, by men and women in post WWI. Most of the remembrances are from 1919, with some later ones being from 1920-1926. Many are from women soldiers in the Q.M.A.A.C, and other British Women's army corps;; and many are from male soldiers in the R.A.S.C. and similar army corps. It was a time of love and death, love lost and love being sought. Many of the signatures come from Curragh (a notorious training camp in Ireland).

There are some lovely and sad drawings and texts, dealing with parting and death. Including a lovely poem by Emily Dickinson with an associated drawing. One "poem" by a woman soldier is very racially offensive, but is the only one that I found..

I'm not sure who this belonged to, possibly Maria Macaulay, but clearly a woman in the Q.M.A.A.C.

Leather covers, 6.5x7 inches (17x18 cm), 60 leaves all with writing and/or drawings, some on both sides of the leaf, some on one side only.

VERY GOOD condition, tight, bright, clean and clear.

A look at post WWI, not from the perspective of battle weary men, but from that of an army woman who, from the tone of the comments in the autograph book, seemed to send soldiers off and bring them home with a friendly female touch.

Rare and Scary. Convair really wanted to make a lot of money off the Vietnam War and were hoping that the USAF officers who were part of the Military Industrial Complex would give them the green light.

1968-1970 SIX LETTERS from ADMIRAL THOMAS H. MOORER, CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS, to JAMES S. COPLEY, Publisher of a group of papers including the SAN DIEGO UNION, re: COPLEY MEDIA'S SUPPORT of THE MILITARY and U.S. CONSERVATIVE NATIONALISM. All the letters are personal and friendly, obviously the two men are friends, equally obvious is that the Very Conservative Admiral is courting the Copley Media through this friendship. The letters are all on official CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS stationery of various sizes (3 are 7x8.5 inches, 2 are 7.5x10.5 inches, 1 is 6x7.5 inches). The letters are all typed and hand signed.

The letters reference a couple of notable events, THE PUEBLO CRISIS and INVESTIGATION, and Moorer's nomination by President Nixon to be Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (a position Moorer held from 1970 to 1974). The letters are dated from 12 JUN 1968 to 14 MAY 1970. Some excerpts: "Once again the Navy owes you and your fine publications a commendation for the considerate and highly responsible manner in which you have reported the entire PUEBLO AFFAIR. Your editorial treatment has been distinguished from the beginning by sympathetic and sensitive understanding". "Too often, other news media around the nation have damaged the Navy or our men by implication or innuendo. Our job would be much less complicated if some in the news media field would follow the responsible example you have set in this matter." "The Country is indeed fortunate that someone in your position is so well aware of the dangers facing us in the years ahead... I assure you that I will do my best in the years ahead and will take advantage of your offer of help." "I appreciate the kind sentiments... incident to my recent nomination by PRESIDENT NIXON to become the next CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF... Warmest personal regards... would enjoy seeing you here in Washington." CONDITION: The letters all have folds from where they were folded to fit into envelopes (envelopes not present), and some light signs of handling, otherwise bright, clean and clear. A comprehensive photographic record of where Spain bred, healed and prepared horses for use in the Spanish-American War. Locations were primarily in autonomous regions in or near Andalucia, including: Jerez; La Rambla, Barcelona; Baeza; Valladolid; Zaragoza; Trujillo; Ubeda; Cordoba; and Moron.

During the Spanish-American War, Spanish soldiers primarily rode horses of Spanish origin, mostly Andalusian horses, which were renowned for their agility, endurance, and temperament, giving them a significant advantage in battle against American forces who may have had less experience with such horses; these Spanish horses played a key role in the cavalry operations of the Spanish military throughout the conflict, most notably in CUBA.

GOOD condition: The covers have some wear to the edges, spine folds and spine, including some indents and scrapes; the cloth covered boards have some light marks and shelf rubs; there has been some professional restoration to the corners, overall the covers are sturdy and attractive. Internally, the inner hinges have been professionally repaired, the pages have some toning especially to the margins, there are a few spots and smudges here and there, otherwise the inner pages are tight, bright and clear. A solid, nicely presentable copy.

Quite a rare, historic document. OCLC shows only one library worldwide with a copy, in Galicia, Spain. Horse remounting - the end of an era.

Uncommon 1958 Front Strike Vintage MATCHBOOK With ATOMIC BOMB EXPLOSION and U.S. Naval Ship Imagery. Unused and complete with all 30 blue tipped matches. Closed matchbook measures 2" x 2". VERY GOOD CONDITION: match tips and striker surface are clean, cover lightly age toned, an excellent example.

The Secret U.S. Military Nuclear Testing Program, OPERATION HARDTACK was conducted in the Pacific Ocean where a series of huge nuclear detonations were set on the Bikini and Enewetak Atolls in the Marshall Islands during 1958, some high altitude detonations could be seen from Honolulu. Unfortunately, many participants and ecosystems were exposed to lethal levels of radiation. Just seven years later President Kennedy signed the nuclear test ban treaty, banning all nuclear tests in the atmosphere, in outer space, and underwater.

WE WERE THERE... WORLD WAR II : THE MILWAUKEE JEWISH EXPERIENCE. A book of photographs with accompanying brief WWII narratives by and about Milwaukee Jews who served in World War II. Published by the Milwaukee Jewish Archives / Milwaukee Jewish Federation, Wisconsin, 1996. Presumed first edition. Softcovers, metal spiral bound, 8.5x11.5 inches oblong, approximately 80 unnumbered pages containing about 300 brief accounts of Milwaukee Jews that served in WWII. GOOD condition. Metal spirals have rusted, covers show some creases and wear, the last page has some light creases, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A solid, presentable copy. From the Introduction: "As part of the 1995 commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Milwaukee Jewish Archives created an exhibit which highlighted participation of Milwaukee Jews in the war... Hundreds of people viewed the exhibit throughout the summer... Many people suggested that we preserve this extremely successful exhibit by creating a book which would contain the photos, narratives, and some of the other materials that were on display over the summer... We hope this book has as much meaning for you as it does for all the people who submitted their precious memories. This was truly a labor of love on the part of nearly 300 authors who wrote the stories inside this very special collection of Jewish remembrances." Rare, I have never seen another copy.

HANDWRITTEN DOCUMENTS pertaining to "G" Company, 2nd Regiment, of the National Guard of California, and a Court Martial the Company that involved members of the Regiment.

In San Francisco during the late 1870s there were many militias composed of National Guardsmen, the young men of well known families. These infantry companies were uniformed and armed with rifles. They participated in military parades and as a militia were called to quash civilian rioting stemming from anti Chinese sentiment and labor disputes.

The documents are:

A six page manuscript document written on 8.25 x 12.5 inch lined watermarked paper. The document is titled: "Court-Martial / G Company, Second Regiment, N.G.C." It is addressed to Colonel W. R. Smedburg, President of G. Company. The document contains the findings of the "Court of Inquiry". Based on the findings the Court of Inquiry recommended various disciplinary actions and reprimands. The pages are pinned together at the top by an old pin. [1880].

A two page manuscript letter written in old iron ink on very thin onion skin paper. Dated San Francisco, June 1st 1880. Addressed to Colonel W. R. Smedburg, President "G" Co., 2nd Regt, N.G.C. The letter begins; "The Court Martial - enclosed herewith Findings of the Court of Inquiry, as a result of the first Court Martial of "G" Company..." The letter is signed by L. W. Mix, President, and others.

A one page manuscript letter written by members of "Company G" to the Clerk of the Court of Inquiry, dated May 28th, 1880. The letter is signed by 7 members of G Company. The senders are providing written testimony that they "swear" they did not send the anonymous vulgar letter that seems to be at the heart of the Court Martial.

A one page manuscript letter written on watermarked paper with a printed heading "Headquarters G Company, Second Infantry, N.G.C. / San Francisco". The letter is dated May 11th 1881. The letter requests a furlough be granted for one of the members of Company G. The letter is signed by Capt. L. W. Mix, and others.

An 1880 printed announcement inviting members of Company G to go to San Francisco Armory to participate in Company Drills, etc.

A unique group of documents relating to the early days of the National Guard of California, and the San Francisco based Company G, Second Infantry. William Renwick Smedberg was the commander, he was a Civil War Union Army veteran who was wounded and lost a leg at the Battle of the Wilderness. All the documents are in GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION: leaves neatly folded, the onion skin letter has creasing, is tender and the ink is oxidizing but is still fully legible, overall a clean, solid and bright grouping of historic San Francisco Militia ephemera.

PASAY CITY, PHILIPPINES: Eugenio Lopez Foundation, 1971-1973 (Note that all 5 Volumes show 1971 on the title page.) First and Limited edition, as stated in the Publisher's Notes in Volume V: "It took four years to complete the publication of this set. The first volume was finished in 1971 and publication of the other four volumes continued up to 1973. // Only a limited number of copies have been printed for this first edition...This set is among the few remaining copies which are being offered for sale..."

(All five volumes of this first edition state 1971 on the title page, however the Publisher's Note of Volume V states: "It took four years to complete the publication of this set. The Philippine Insurrection Against the United States is a foundational 5 volume collection of captured Philippine insurgent records. Covering 1896-1903, it documents the Philippine - American War, highlighting the struggle of the First Republic against U.S. occupation. Early in the 20th century it was twice withheld from publication by the U.S. government due to its sympathetic portrayal of the Philippine side.

Compiled by Capt. John R.M. Taylor of the U.S. Army, who, from 1901-1906, reviewed and supervised the translation of over 200,000 captured documents to create this archive.

The five volume set contains 1,534 selected documents, including telegraphic correspondence of Emilio Aguinaldo, official reports, and proclamations from 1898 to 1903. While titled an "Insurrection" by the U.S. government, the documents illustrate the intense Filipino resistance and desire for independence.

FIVE HARDCOVER BOOKS, blue cloth covered boards, titled in gilt on the front covers and spines, 6x9 inches.

The five volumes are:

Vol. I: 1571 to May 19, 1898, xxii, 525 pages;

Vol. II: May 19, 1898 to July 4, 1902, xii, 524 pages; Vol. III: May 19, 1898 to February 4, 1899, viii, 672 pages; Vol. IV: February 5, 1899 to November 13, 1899, xiii, 809 pages; Vol. V: November 13, 1899 to July 4, 1902, xviii, 829, 129.

CONDITION: The covers of all the volumes have light shelf rubs and a bit of wear to the spine folds, otherwise they are solid, sharp cornered, and attractive. All the volumes are foxed on their top page edges and only lightly so on the other page edges (page edges of the closed books). Internally, Volume I has the bottom-of-a-coffee-cup size brown stain to its front pastedown that has soaked through to some subsequent prelim pages, growing lighter on each page until it has fully disappeared (at least to my eyes) on page xiv. Otherwise all the pages of all the volumes are bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A very presentable set of this important work.

******In 1906 Taylor ordered the Government Printing Office to typeset proofs, with two volumes dedicated to his history of US - Philippine relations and three other volumes containing 1,340 supporting papers of original documents. Then Secretary of War William Howard Taft deferred its publication for fear of antagonizing both Americans and Filipinos. In 1909 a second attempt was made to publish the volumes when President Taft's former secretary James A. LeRoy wrote a critique objecting to its publication. The Bureau of Insular Affairs then abandoned the project. It was finally first published in the Philippines in 1971 by the Eugenio Lopez Foundation, with an Introduction by Renato Consantino.******

About the author ILLAN PALAT (from the BLAVATNIK ARCHIVE website):

******Illan Palat was born on April 10, 1924, in Ukraine. When he was three, his family had their property confiscated and was forced to move to the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. They lived and worked in Birofeld, a local kolkhoz, until Palat's father learned accounting and relocated his family to Birobidzhan. Palat was drafted in October 1942, underwent infantry training, and was sent to the front. His first combat experience was in the Battle of Kursk, where he fought on the front line in a 45mm anti-tank artillery unit. The battles were brutal, and Palat's unit suffered heavy losses. There were intermittent shortages of food and water, but there was also a strong sense of camaraderie among all soldiers, regardless of their backgrounds. In late 1943, Palat was severely wounded in the leg; he was saved by another solider, who carried him off the battlefield and into a local house. After eight months of hospitalization and multiple surgeries, Palat returned to Birobidzhan on crutches. Of the forty-three young men who were drafted from Birobidzhan with him, only two would come back. After demobilization, Palat worked as a watchmaker in Birobidzhan, until doctors advised him to move to a warmer climate because of his wound. In 1947, Palat moved to Tbilisi, Georgia, where he worked in construction. In 1977, he moved to United States and lived in New York and San Francisco. In addition to working as a contractor, he wrote the books A SOLDIER FROM BIROBIDZHAN and THE WAR AND THE HOLOCAUST.******

FIRST ISSUE of THE XXTH CENTURY MAGAZINE - A SHANGHAI Based NAZI Financed Periodical. Edited by Klaus Mehnert.

SHANGHAI: The XXth Century Publishing Company / Klaus Mehnert, October 1941. First Issue - Vol. I, No. 1.

The XXth Century was an English language, Nazi financed, deceptively scholarly publication about China, Japan, Asia, Germany, and World War II. It had a strong pro-Axis slant, but presented itself as an independent publication filled with articles about Asia and the World. German activities in the War and throughout the world were portrayed in a positive light.

Softcover magazine, 7.5x10 inches (18.5x25.5 cm), 80 pages, illustrated with photographic plates and in-text drawings. Laid-in at the front is a single sheet announcing this "New Magazine".

GOOD CONDITION: the covers have some soiling, light wear to the spine ends and spine folds, a faint signature on the front cover, and paperclip indents and associated creases to the rear cover and the last few pages; internally, the pages are tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

The Berlin State Library called The XXth Century "particularly remarkable because it is completely free of Nazi propaganda." Far from the truth.

About KLAUS MEHNERT and the XXTH CENTURY magazine (from Wikipedia and the University of Hawaii website):

******Born In Moscow in 1906, Mehnert's family left Russia in 1914. He received his PhD from the University of Berlin in 1928. Mehnert was fluent in Russian, German, and English. He married Enid Keyes (d.1955) in California in 1933, and in 1934 returned to the Soviet Union as an author and German newspaper reporter. In 1936 Goebbels ordered German newspapers to stop printing Mehnert's news reports, so he moved to America where he taught at UC Berkeley then at the University of Hawaii.

In June 1941, six months prior to America's entry to World War II, he left for Shanghai, China, where he published an English language journal The XXth Century with financing from the Nazi German Foreign Ministry and Joseph Goebbels' Third Reich Propaganda Ministry.

The XXth Century was an influential promoter of anti-Allied reports and commentary in Asia, The XXth Century was later described by American intelligence as "one of the slickest bits of propaganda work that has been done anywhere". In its four years, Menhert "steered his publication cunningly along a sophisticated path that eschewed overt pro-Axis advocacy", according to the British historian Bernard Wasserstein, with "a wide range of contributors, few of whom were publicly identified with Nazism". The journal was discontinued at the end of the war in 1945, and Mehnert was briefly imprisoned before returning to Germany.

Following the end of WWII Mehnert returned to Germany where he taught, published, and advised the government on Sino-Russian matters. The German historian Norbert Frei described Mehnert as "one of the adaptable Former Ones".

Klaus Mehnert died in 1984 at the age of 77 in Freudenstadt, West Germany.******
