Rare SIGNED copy of an important earth sciences reference work.

About ROBERT G. COLEMAN, who SIGNED this copy (from the National Academy of Sciences website):

******Robert Coleman, b.1923 d.2020, an internationally recognized geologic field mapper and geochemical mineralogist-petrologist, made enormous contributions to scientists knowledge of the geologic evolution of contractional continental-margin subduction zones and to the genesis of the ocean-floor-to-upper-mantle lithosphere (that is, ophiolites-sections of Earth's oceanic crust that have been thrust onto the edges of island arcs and continental margins). During four decades of studying the origin and geologic history of western California and southwestern Oregon, Coleman rose to become a world authority on circumpacific tectonics, petrogenesis of the oceanic lithosphere, and the petrotectonics of Alpine-Tethyan convergent suture zones, chiefly in central and eastern Asia. His Ph.D. thesis on the New Idria (central California) Mineral District was a classic work documenting protrusion, diapiric ascent, of a large, low-density ultramafic complex. Coleman received a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1957. During his doctoral studies, he also worked for the Atomic Energy Commission and in 1954 joined the staff of the U.S. Geological Survey. Departing the USGS in 1982, he became a professor at Stanford until his retirement from academia in 1993, after which he continued productive research until virtually his dying day.******

The Jack L. Davies Napa Valley Agricultural Land Preservation Fund, of which Eisele is president, asked cultural anthropologist Ziegler to record these important first person stories to mark the 40th anniversary of the 2008 adoption in Napa County of the nation's first ever Agricultural Preserve. This historic Ag Preserve deserves both study and celebration, Zeigler said, noting that during the decades when most other Bay Area counties experienced explosive urban growth, paving over farmland, the Ag Preserve successfully safeguarded Napa Valley's historic agrarian identity, allowing farming, especially grape growing, to thrive. Eisele, who provides one of a dozen moving personal narratives included in the book, spoke about the political struggles leading up to the groundbreaking 1968 ordinance, and stressed the need for the community's constant vigilance in resisting current and future development pressures on valuable agricultural land.******

    About AKITSUNE IMAMURA (from Wikipedia):

******Akitsune Imamura, b.1870 d.1948, was a Japanese seismologist. He studied at the Imperial University of Tokyo. In 1899, in anticipation of the later theory of plate tectonics, he argued that the tsunami that struck the Sanriku coast of Honshu island in 1896 (known as the Meiji Sanriku tsunami) had been triggered by movements of the earth's crust under the sea. In a paper written in 1905, he predicted that a major earthquake would hit the Kanto region around Tokyo within 50 years and kill over 100,000 people, and advocated that measures be taken. His worries materialized when the Great Kanto earthquake devastated Tokyo in 1923, claiming more than 100,000 victims. In 1939, while working for the Seismological Observatory of Tokyo University, Imamura made a reconstruction of Zhang Heng's seismoscope (132 CE), considered to have been the first such device ever made.******
