Two Volumes, hardcovers, leather spines and corners with marbled paper covered boards, the spines have five raised bands and are decorated in gilt, black leather title labels on spines, 5x9 inches. Pagination: Volume I: XIV, [2], 198, [2]. Volume II: [VI], 192. GOOD condition. The covers have scrapes and rubs to the boards and edges, including the loss of the paper covering in various places; the spine title labels are mostly worn away; nonetheless the covers are sturdy, attractive, and are doing their job well. Internally very nice, some light foxing and offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise the pages are lovely, bright, tight, clean and unmarked. A solid, nice, two volume set.

Part Two, paginated separately, is complete including its title page. There is foxing on the first and last few pages, otherwise the pages remain tight, bright, clean and unmarked. CONDITION: PART 3 is in GOOD MINUS condition. Lacking its wrappers. The title page is disbound (i.e. laid on loosely), toned / browned, and has some edge wear including small edge chips. The title page has the SIGNATURE of TOMÁS THAYER OJEDA, Chilean Scholar and Author of Los Conquistadores de Chile. The first 20 pages are foxed at their upper front margin area. Latter pages are pulling from the staples. The pages are toned, especially at the margins. The fold open maps and the fold open table all are in solid shape. CONDITION: PART 5 is complete, including its wrappers, but is in only FAIR condition, the wrappers are splitting at the spine folds and coming loose, have water staining and shorelining, are soiled, and have edge wear; internally, there is some waviness / old water damage to the bottom margin and corner area of the inner pages, the bottom front corners are bent, there is red staining to the bottom corner of a few pages, some pages are soiled; nonetheless the pages remain bright, many pages are uncut, and the printing is always clear and fully legible.

Published in Beijing, China, 1979. Hardcover Book, no dustjacket as issued, 5x7.5 inches, 396 pages. GOOD condition, the covers' corners are bumped and worn through, the covers' edges are scraped and worn through at places, there is a small scrape and a couple scotch tape remnants at the bottom of the spine, the front free endpaper has a rectangular red stamp with English and Chinese lettering, there is circular blind embossed stamp on each of the first few pages ("Library of JPA Inc.", a landscaping firm I believe), the pages are lightly toned, otherwise a solid, presentable copy that remains bright, clean, clear and unmarked. Condition: NEAR FINE book, a touch of wear to the spine ends and corner tips, overall sharp, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. In a GOOD MINUS dustjacket that has wear and chips to its spine ends, rubs and scrapes to its edges and folds, and general signs of handling and use; nonetheless the dj is doing its job well and retains its original $4.95 price at the top of the front flap.

The true First Printing of this book is hard-to-find.

From the Preface: "The investigations took place in Ochiishi and Akkeshi Japan in 1951 and 1952, sponsored by the Forestry Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and by the Forestry Department of Hokkaido. The studies were made by members of the Meteorological Observatory, the [Hokkaido University] Faculty of Agriculture, the Forest Experiment Station, and the Research Station of Agriculture. The members who took part in the field investigation amounted to more than forty in number. The results of the investigations are collected in this book."

CONDITION: The paper wrappers have creases, splitting at the spine folds (repaired/reinforced with clear tape), spine and margin toning, and some stiff vertical creases at the spine. Internally, the binding is split between signatures at a number of places where the book was over-opened (and a couple of those splits are tender - a good tug could split the book in two); the pages have a crease to their upper corner; the front free endpaper has the rubber stamp of "Atmospheric Research Group, Pasadena, California" and the signature of Joseph W. Joy, (an oceanographer); otherwise the pages are bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

******Robert Coleman, b.1923 d.2020, an internationally recognized geologic field mapper and geochemical mineralogist-petrologist, made enormous contributions to scientists knowledge of the geologic evolution of contractional continental-margin subduction zones and to the genesis of the ocean-floor-to-upper-mantle lithosphere (that is, ophiolites-sections of Earth's oceanic crust that have been thrust onto the edges of island arcs and continental margins). During four decades of studying the origin and geologic history of western California and southwestern Oregon, Coleman rose to become a world authority on circumpacific tectonics, petrogenesis of the oceanic lithosphere, and the petrotectonics of Alpine-Tethyan convergent suture zones, chiefly in central and eastern Asia. His Ph.D. thesis on the New Idria (central California) Mineral District was a classic work documenting protrusion, diapiric ascent, of a large, low-density ultramafic complex. Coleman received a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1957. During his doctoral studies, he also worked for the Atomic Energy Commission and in 1954 joined the staff of the U.S. Geological Survey. Departing the USGS in 1982, he became a professor at Stanford until his retirement from academia in 1993, after which he continued productive research until virtually his dying day.******
