Though there were many dictionaries of and scholarly books on the Hawaiian language published prior to this work, this was the first book published in Hawaii exclusively as a school textbook for the teaching of the Hawaiian language to Hawaiian high school students.

GOOD condition, professionally rebacked making this a solid, well bound copy; the covers have some rubs, soiling, and light wear; internally, there are tiny holes to the gutter edge of the pages from an old sewn binding of the signatures (threads long gone, perfect binding holding well), the blank endpapers are toned and the text pages lightly so; overall, this is a complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked copy.

From the Preface:

******The Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii in the session of 1923 passed Act 243, entitled "an act to provide for the preparation and publication of a school text book in the Hawaiian language." In pursuance of this act, Governor Lawrence M. Judd arranged with the Hawaiian Board of Missions for the publication of the manuscript which had been prepared by Mrs. Mary H. Atcherley. Other documents had been submitted, but it was felt that Mrs. Atcherley's contribution was better fitted for the purpose than similar studies.

It is intended that this First Book in Hawaiian shall be used in the junior high schools and high schools throughout the Territory, but it is hoped that other schools will make use of this material in acquiring a knowledge of the Hawaiian language.

Grateful acknowledgement is hereby made not only of the material submitted by Mrs. Atcherley but also suggestions from a similar work by Messrs. John Wise and F. E. Midkiff, of the Kamehameha Schools, and the work of the late Professor W. D. Alexander entitled, "A Short Synopsis of the Most Essential Points in Hawaiian Grammar." - HENRY P. Contemporary finely-bound hardcovers, vellum spine and spine margins with marbled paper covered boards, 5.5x7.5 inches; THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL WORK including its yellow wrappers is nicely bound within, 285 pages.

VERY GOOD condition: Some light wear and soiling to the finely-bound hardcovers; personal bookplate of Walter M. Weber, a Naval Surgeon and noted Book Collector, on the front pastedown; small initials at the top of two blank front endpapers; the original front wrapper has a couple light stains, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A complete, solid, lovely copy.

RARE 1876 THIRD EDITION - recent reprints can be found, but this 1876 third edition of only 200 copies is almost impossible to find.

About JUAN SORAPAN DE RIEROS (from Wikipedia):

******Juan Sorapán de Rieros, b.1572 d.1638, was a Spanish physician of the 17th century . Expert in paremiology and famous for having published a book with a collection of proverbs about Spanish medicine and gastronomy entitled: Spanish Medicine contained in vulgar proverbs of our language.

He began his medical studies at the Monastery of Guadalupe . He graduated in Arts from the University of Salamanca in 1592 and later studied medicine in 1592-1593. In 1616, he published his work with forty-seven Castilian proverbs. He later became a member of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in Llerena and Granada.******

About JOSÉ MARÍA SBARBI (from Wikipedia):

A MANUSCRIPT COMMENTARY on the HEBREW BIBLE OLD TESTAMENT PSALMS by NOTED AMERICAN THEOLOGIAN and HEBREW SCHOLAR, WALTER ROBERT BETTERIDGE. An incomplete but extensive manuscript work that binds together an 1880 printing of the PSALMS (which have Betteridge's EXTENSIVE MARGIN NOTES ON EVERY PAGE) and OVER 100 PAGES OF MANUSCRIPT COMMENTARY. The handwritten commentary and notes were written by Betteridge ca. 1910-1916. The manuscript was likely being prepared for publication as "Commentary on Old Testament Psalms", but the work was never published because Betteridge died (1916) before it was completed. Nonetheless his wife had his "work in progress" professionally bound and then donated it to the University of Rochester Theological Seminary where her husband had been a Professor of Hebrew in the Old Testament Department.

This professionally bound volume contains the printed work: LIBER PSALMORUM - Textum masoreticum acuratissime expressit... notis criticis confirmavit, by S. BAER, [with] Praefatus est edendi operis adjutor, by FRANCISCUS DELITZSCH. Lipsiae: Ex officina Bernhardi Tauchnitz, 1880. 8vo, 5.5x9 inches. Pagination: [1] f., 82 pp. TOGETHER with over 100 PAGES of INTERLEAVED MANUSCRIPT COMMENTARY NOTES by Bettteridge, interleaved so that every one of the printed pages of the LIBER PSALMORUM has one or more pages of associated handwritten commentary bound-in beside it. There are also manuscript pages at both the front and rear of the book, and clippings from related texts here and there, clippings which Betteridge also annotated.

The printed PSALMS, the 100+ pages of manuscript commentary, and the many other small slips of paper with handwritten notes, are BOUND TOGETHER in recent hardcovers, black moire silk covered boards with leather spine label titled in gilt.

NOTE: Betteridge's handwriting is miniscule with LOTS of words crammed onto every page and is difficult to read without a magnifier, so either have eagle eyes or an illuminated magnifying lamp on standby. Of course by writing in such a small manuscript Betteridge has managed to impart an incredible amount of commentary onto the 100+ handwritten pages. In normal script it would likely be at least 200+ pages.

PROVENANCE: Donated by Mrs. Betteridge to the Rochester Theological Seminary Library. with an institutional bookplate noting this on front pastedown. "Presented to Rochester Theological Seminary Library by MRS. BETTERIDGE / From The Library of WALTER ROBERT BETTERIDGE, D.D. 1863-1916 / On the Faculty of This Seminary in the Department Of Old Testament, 1891-1916".

CONDITION: The recent covers are solid and lovely; internally there is a Seminary bookplate on the front pastedown, as noted above, and a library blind-stamp on the title page; the pages are age toned; all the edges have significantly browned and have varying degrees of chipping and wear, affecting only a bit of marginalia here and there; overall the printing and handwriting is clear and legible (with magnification); all pages, manuscript and printed, are tightly bound. A solid copy.

A UNIQUE WORK that represents an American theological scholar's lifetime of studying and teaching Hebrew and the Old Testament. Deserving of close examination.

About PROFESSOR WALTER ROBERT BETTERIDGE, D.D. (from various Internet sources):

Collated page by page with a copy held in the Bibliotheque Jesuite des Fontaines, Lyon, France.

Previously owned by JAMES LE BOUTILLIER, and donated by him to the Theological Seminary of Ohio, with his ink presentation, signature and date (1869) on the front free endpaper, and his almost completely faded heraldic bookplate on the front pastedown (with magnification his printed name is still visible at the bottom of the plate). James Le Boutillier was a prominent businessman in Cincinnati. He became renowned for his large heraldic book collection.

GOOD Condition: Ex-libris of the Diocese of Ohio with inked call number on spine, bookplate on the front pastedown, and some library marks here and there. The cover's have some wear and soiling to the vellum, and the spine gilt has mostly worn away, but are sturdy and doing their job well. Internally, there is a previous owner's inscription on the front free-endpaper, as noted above; the front and rear hinges are cracked but holding well; there is light shorelining mostly on the early pages, and some foxing here and there; overall a solid copy with pages that are tight, bright, clean, clear and fully legible throughout. Textually complete but with only 10 (of 38) tipped in plates. A nice, presentable copy.

******James Le Boutillier, who died on September 19, was the sole surviving member of the old firm of Le Boutillier Brothers, which founded dry goods houses in New York, Philadelphia and Cincinnati about sixty years ago. He was born on the Island of Guernsey in 1814, and came to New York in 1849, and after living in this city for four years, went to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he founded the Cincinnati branch of the firm He developed the Cincinnati house to great success and prominence.
