NINE ISSUES of THE JOURNAL OF WEATHER MODIFICATION. Published by the WEATHER MODIFICATION ASSOCIATION "WMA", various locations (Altadena, CA; Norman, OK; Fresno, CA), 1970-1978.

These issues detail what various state governments and meteorologists did, tried to do, and wanted to do, to manipulate our weather in the 1970s (how did it go?).

These issues were owned by JOSEPH B. POWERS, at the time a Senior Meteorologist in the California Dept. of Water Resources (Meteorologist III), and an officer of the American Meteorological Society. His Signature and statement "Personal Copy" are at the top of each issue.

The issues are: Vol 2 No 1, May 1970; Vol 3 No 1, April 1971; Vol 6 No 1, April 1974; Vol 7 No 1, April 1975; Vol 7 No 2, Dec. 1975; Vol 8 No 1, April 1976; Vol 8 No 2, Sept. 1976; Vol 9 No 1, April 1977; Vol 10 No 1 April 1978.

The Weather Modification Association exists to this day. Its "Vision Statement" is: "Free exchange of accurate information regarding the efficacy, safety, methodology and cost effectiveness of weather modification activities."

The journals are all in generally GOOD condition, the May 1970 issue has clear tape reinforcement to the spine, the covers have light soiling, there are rusty paperclip ghosts on some pages and a margin notes here and there, otherwise all are just lightly used and still tight, bright, clean and clear.

Manipulating weather? Hmmm. Nothing could go wrong, right?

There were questions regarding the initial 1968 LAPD forensic results of the testing of the bullet, so in 1975 a new forensic examination panel was appointed consisting of some outside forensic bullet experts, including Charles Morton.

Charles Morton, one of the lead investigators in the reexamination, sent this to a colleague, John Murdock. John Murdock was Chief of the Contra Costa County Forensic Services (Crime Lab) for many years, and was often brought in by outside police departments as a forensic expert. Charles Morton and John Murdock both worked in the San Francisco Bay Area, and often consulted each other.

The following is hand-written on the frame's paper covered backside:

"BULLET removed from the body of ROBERT KENNEDY - shot by / SIRHAN SIRHAN - rec'd by / John Murdock from / Chuck Morton - 1976".

NEAR FINE condition, a small push to the paper covering on the frame's backside, otherwise great. The photograph looks fine, but has not been inspected outside of the frame.

Comes from the estate of JOHN MURDOCK, Chief of the Contra Costa County Forensic Services Division.

About JOHN E. MURDOCK (from an online obituary, and elsewhere on the Internet):

******John E. Murdock, b.1938 d.2025, was Chief of the Contra Costa County Forensic Services Division (crime laboratory) for many years. He was an expert firearm and toolmark examiner. Though Murdock worked on many high profile criminal cases, he was most proud of his work on two cases for the Innocence Project, where his expertise helped secure the release of Patrick Pursley (who had spent 25 years in prison) and Bryan Foshay (who had spent 9 years in prison) following their wrongful convictions for murder based on misleading forensic evidence. The Pursley case was the first in the United States to allow post conviction firearms testing.

John Murdock was an Emeritus Member of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD), a Life Member of the California Association of Criminalists (CAC), a Distinguished member of The Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE), and a member of numerous other forensic science organizations. He also authored over 30 scientific articles and taught many classes and workshops on the subjects of crime scene investigation and firearm and toolmark examination.*****

About the ROBERT KENNEDY ASSASSINATION GUN FORENSICS REEXAMINATION (from the LA Times and Wikipedia):

******"There is a nickname in our profession," one specialist said, for mistakes in which an investigator is too quick to "make" a gun. It is "Wolferism," a reference to DeWayne Wolfer, a one-time LAPD criminalist who misread evidence in the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in Los Angeles in 1968.

In 1975, a Los Angeles judge convened a panel of forensics to examine ballistic evidence. Among them was CHARLES MORTON, a criminalist from Oakland. The panel found that the three bullets that hit Kennedy were all fired from the same gun, but could not find a match between these bullets and Sirhan's revolver. They accused DeWayne Wolfer, the lead crime scene investigator who had testified at trial that a bullet taken from Kennedy's body was from Sirhan's revolver, of running a careless investigation. The forensic experts urged further investigation. An internal police document, which was later released, concluded that "Kennedy and Weisel bullets not fired from the same gun" and "Kennedy bullet not fired from Sirhan's revolver."******

Binder of Noted Engineer, HARVEY BIRCHARD TAYLOR. Filled with Blueprints of his (and a couple by members of his team, including Lewis F. Moody) Manuscript Specifications, Calculations, Mathematical Formulas, and Drawings for the DESIGN and BUILDING OF POWER GENERATING HYDRAULIC TURBINES for the NIAGARA FALLS HYDRAULIC POWER COMPANY, Washington Power Company, Great Western Power Company, St Lawrence River Power Company, and others. Some of the hydraulic power turbines were in final stages of construction, others in early theoretical stages.

Undated, but likely 1920s and 1930s.

These detailed engineering specifications of H. BIRCHARD TAYLOR, were created using a blueprint/diazo process wherein all the notes were likely written out on cellophane and then prepared as multiple blueprint sheets. These were perhaps produced as permanent records for H. Birchard Taylor, and others in his team. (Thanks to colleagues for their help determining the printing process.)

Three ring binder, filled with 176 three-hole punched 8.5x11 inch blueprint pages containing manuscript holograph engineering mathematical specifications, etc; illustrated with mathematical equations and drawings. There are also 12 fold-open blueprint drawings. The pages are grouped together by project, concept, etc; each is titled, most are a few pages long. They show the theoretical engineering design formulas that were developed for each project. One of the major projects was for the NIAGARA FALLS HYDRAULIC POWER COMPANY. Though gathered together in titled groups by project, the sheets are all numbered consecutively in the upper corner. There are 176 numbered sheets (though sheets 26 and 27are either misnumbered or lacking, I can't tell which), printed on one side only (the blueprint side), plus 9 laid-in and 3 bound in fold-open blueprints.

CONDITION: The binder's covers have lost their paper overcoat but are holding together kind of like the Terminator after he lost his flesh, the three inner metal rings are working fine; the first blueprint page has a long closed tear, some whitish stains, and shorelining; otherwise the blueprint pages are in generally good condition, bright and clear text, with some water shoreline staining, edgewear, creases, and pulling from the rings, here and there; the laid-in fold-open blueprint drawings have wear and small tears to the edges, shorelining, and some scrapes at the corners.

The works are by H. BIRCHARD TAYLOR, with a couple by others including Lewis F. Moody, those being noted.

SCARCE gathering of holograph blueprint engineering specifications, formulas and drawings by a noted American hydraulic engineer. I have never seen one before and doubt I ever will again.

1869 FILTRATION OF RIVER WATERS FOR THE SUPPLY OF CITIES AS PRACTISED IN EUROPE, by James P. Kirkwood. Published by D. Van Nostrand, Publishers, New York, 1869. First Edition.

Copy of HIRAM BISSELL who was President of HARTFORD'S WATER COMMISSION from 1854 to 1873 and OVERSAW THE CONSTRUCTION OF HARTFORD'S WATER WORKS SYSTEM.

The book is SIGNED by Hiram Bissell at the top of the title page: "Hiram Bissell / Hartford, Conn." Also, laid-in the book is a MANUSCRIPT LETTER by Hiram Bissell on "Office of Water Commissioners" letterhead. The letter reads in part:

"Hartford Jany 28 1856 / To the Mayor Aldermen, and County of Common Council of The City of Hartford / The Water Commissioners...recommend to the Hon. Court of Common Council the payment of The Woodruff & Beach Iron Works bill of extras...$3851.57. / Respectfully Submitted / Hiram Bissell / President Pro Tem".

(Woodruff & Beach Iron Works of Hartford built many items for Hartford Water Works, including some massive iron pumps.)

Hardcover book, 9x11.5 inches, 178 pages of text followed by 30 PLATES, many double-page, one in color. The plates are drawings of a variety of European city water works systems, including: London, Liverpool, Dublin, Hamburg, Berlin, Marselles, Lyons, Genoa, and others.

Condition: The covers are disbound (loose but present), the cloth spine edges and spine ends are scraped and chipped, nonetheless the covers are original. Internally nice, the endpapers have a few small scrapes, the pages are lightly toned, there is some foxing to the plates mainly on their blank backsides, overall the pages are complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A nice, complete copy in disbound but present covers.

RARE TRUE 1869 FIRST EDITION with all the PLATES. Unique with the SIGNATURE and LETTER of HIRAM BISSELL, who oversaw the construction of Hartford's Water Works in the mid 1800s.

This was a stunning announcement with far reaching scientific implications. The brief letter announcing their research findings is on page 5349. It was a "Big Bang" announcement, so to speak, that led to incredible developments in the scientific and medical fields.

Also contains a paper by Linus Pauling, Philip A. Baughan, and J. H. Sturdivant titled: THE DETERMINATION of the STRUCTURES of COMPLEX-MOLECULES and IONS from X-RAY DIFFRACTION by THEIR SOLUTIONS: The STRUCTURES of the GROUPS... This paper is on pages 5477- 5486.

Hardcovers, burgundy cloth covered boards, gilt titling to the spine, 8x10 inches, thick with over 2000 pages (numbered 3835-5891). The complete Volume 72. Filled with MANY scientific papers and letters in addition to those by Linus Pauling and his group, but none as IMPACTFUL.

Laid-in is a note by a previous owner that reads: "NOTE : This is Linus Pauling's first work on structure of Proteins. Very Important."

NEAR FINE condition: The initials "J. E. R." are gilt embossed at the bottom of the cover's spine (perhaps a previous owner who had the work professionally bound), the title page has a 1 inch closed tear, otherwise the volume is just lightly used, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A very nice, solid and presentable copy; rarely found in this condition.

ASSOCIATION COPY - Copy of EDMUND CALLIS BERKELEY, with his SIGNATURE on the front free-endpaper. Above his signature is a date stamp "Rec'd Jul 11 1940". It is interesting to note that the three other Berkeley signatures I have seen over the years all had a rubber date stamp as well, I guess that was something he did. There are some minor handwritten pencil notes, marks and corrections on pages 102-105, and a small notation "Errata p 44" written on the rear pastedown, all of which appear to be in his hand. Nine years after he "received" this book, Berkeley's book GIANT BRAINS OR MACHINES THAT THINK was published (John WIley, New York, 1949). Giant Brains or Machines that Think was an influential work that helped popularize computers. Perhaps this copy of Rudolf Carnap's ABRISS DER LOGISTIK was the work that influenced Edmund C. Berkeley.

VERY GOOD condition, The covers have wear to the spine and edges; internally, there is a rubberstamped date on the front free-endpaper and some minor notes and corrections within the text, as noted above. Overall a tight, bright, clean and clear copy.

******Mathieu Joseph Bonaventure Orfila, b.1787 d.1853, was a Spanish toxicologist and chemist, the founder of the science of toxicology.

If there is reason to believe that a murder or attempted murder may have been committed using poison, a forensic toxicologist is often engaged to examine pieces of evidence such as corpses and food items for poison content. In Orfila's time the primary type of poison in use was arsenic, but there were not any reliable ways of testing for its presence. Orfila created new techniques, refined existing techniques and described them in his first treatise, TRAITÉ DES POISONS, Paris, 1813, (TREATMENT OF PERSONS WHO TOOK POISON first American edition, 1819).******

GOOD condition, the covers have a bit of wear to the spine ends and corner tips, the page edges (page edges of the closed book) have some light stains and soiling, internally there are some relevant margin notes in pencil here and there, otherwise the book is tight, bright, clean and clear. The SIGNATURE and INSCRIPTION are on the title page. The inscription reads; "To John Asherhurst / with best wishes and thanks for his help in proofreading! / Carl G. Hempel / 10-16-65". The hardcover first edition of this book is scarce (the later 1970 paperback is rather common). The first edition is almost impossible to find signed and inscribed.

GOOD MINUS condition, soiling to the covers, front spine fold is tender but holding, some margin marks and underlining here and there throughout, stamp of "University of Pennsylvania Libraries" (where Hempel was a Professor starting in 1977) at the bottom of a blank prelim page, the stamp has been lined out in black and there are no other ex-library marks in or on the book, otherwise a respectable, complete copy of this early book by Carl G. Hempel and Paul Oppenheim, with an ex-lib association to the University of Pittsburgh where Hempel was a Professor.

About CARL G. HEMPEL (from Wikipedia):

******Carl Gustav "Peter" Hempel, b.1905 d.1997, was a German writer, philosopher, logician, and epistemologist. He was a major figure in logical empiricism, a 20th century movement in the philosophy of science. He is especially well known for his articulation of the deductive-nomological model of scientific explanation, which was considered the standard model of scientific explanation during the 1950s and 1960s. He is also known for the Raven Paradox, aka "Hempel's Paradox".

After moving to Berlin, Hempel met Rudolf Carnap and became involved in the Berlin Circle of philosophers associated with the Vienna Circle.

In 1937 Hempel emigrated to the United States, where he accepted a position as Carnap's assistant at the University of Chicago. He later held positions at the City College of New York, Yale University, and Princeton University, where he taught alongside Thomas Kuhn and remained until made emeritus in 1973. In 1977 he became the University Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1989 the Department of Philosophy at Princeton University renamed its Three Lecture Series the "Carl G. This copy was presented to Donald G. Crosby, with the author's handwritten note on the title page: "Dear Dr. Crosby, / Better late than never. / Thanks for being a part of my life journey. / Greg / 2.24.2000". Donald G Crosby is a UC Davis professor emeritus in environmental toxicology. (There is now an endowed chair at UC Davis named after Donald G. Crosby.) He was also on the Committee that approved this thesis.

Investigations on how "fog-preventing forests" can help capture dense, low-humidity, high salinity, sea fog, and thus limit its harmful effects on health and agriculture.

From the Preface: "The investigations took place in Ochiishi and Akkeshi Japan in 1951 and 1952, sponsored by the Forestry Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and by the Forestry Department of Hokkaido. The studies were made by members of the Meteorological Observatory, the [Hokkaido University] Faculty of Agriculture, the Forest Experiment Station, and the Research Station of Agriculture. The members who took part in the field investigation amounted to more than forty in number. The results of the investigations are collected in this book."

Paper wrappers, 6.5x9.5 inches (17x24 cm), 399 pages.

CONDITION: The paper wrappers have creases, splitting at the spine folds (repaired/reinforced with clear tape), spine and margin toning, and some stiff vertical creases at the spine. Internally, the binding is split between signatures at a number of places where the book was over-opened (and a couple of those splits are tender - a good tug could split the book in two); the pages have a crease to their upper corner; the front free endpaper has the rubber stamp of "Atmospheric Research Group, Pasadena, California" and the signature of Joseph W. Joy, (an oceanographer); otherwise the pages are bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

The photos are loosely inserted in plastic holders and held in a three ring binder. There are two introductory leaves, the second of which states: "Several Products Resulting from Research and Development / Reed Research Inc. / Washington 7 D.C.". Put together by Reed Research Inc., circa mid 1950s.

The photos are all in VERY GOOD condition, bright, sharp, clear; the binder is solid and functioning well, with a few minor scrapes.

About the FOUNDER of REED RESEARCH INC., Stanley Foster Reed (from Wikipedia):

******Stanley Foster Reed, b.1917 d.2007, was an entrepreneur, inventor, and publisher who founded Reed Research Inc. in 1940, the journal Mergers & Acquisitions in 1965, and the magazine Campaigns & Elections in 1980.

In 1940, at age 23, Reed started a scientific research company, renting a two story building next to a junkyard in Georgetown. Over the next 20 years he built "Reed Research Inc." into a multi-million dollar company. He worked on issues ranging from safe land mine removal to electrocardiography to language learning laboratories to designs for shipping containers for missiles, obtaining scores of patents in the process. Based solely on his work experience he was admitted to membership in the Society of Naval Architects and received certification as a Professional Engineer.

In 1962, after selling Reed Research to Log-Etronics, Inc., he started Tech-Audit as well as the Reed Research Institute for Creative Studies in the RCA Building on K Street in Washington, where he ran a number of publishing businesses.

In the 1960s, he was actively involved in social issues, including sponsoring programs to encourage inner-city entrepreneurship, writing about the poor of Appalachia, and lecturing on ethics.******

******Robert Coleman, b.1923 d.2020, an internationally recognized geologic field mapper and geochemical mineralogist-petrologist, made enormous contributions to scientists knowledge of the geologic evolution of contractional continental-margin subduction zones and to the genesis of the ocean-floor-to-upper-mantle lithosphere (that is, ophiolites-sections of Earth's oceanic crust that have been thrust onto the edges of island arcs and continental margins). During four decades of studying the origin and geologic history of western California and southwestern Oregon, Coleman rose to become a world authority on circumpacific tectonics, petrogenesis of the oceanic lithosphere, and the petrotectonics of Alpine-Tethyan convergent suture zones, chiefly in central and eastern Asia. His Ph.D. thesis on the New Idria (central California) Mineral District was a classic work documenting protrusion, diapiric ascent, of a large, low-density ultramafic complex. Coleman received a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1957. During his doctoral studies, he also worked for the Atomic Energy Commission and in 1954 joined the staff of the U.S. Geological Survey. Six issues bound in one volume, hardcovers, leather covered boards, gilt coat-of-arms embossed on the front and rear covers, six spine bands, gilt decorations on spine, marbled page edges, marbled endpapers, 12 mo., 4.5x7 inches (10.5x18 cm), 658 + [14] pages. Illustrated with one folding plate, engravings on the title page of each issue, and tail pieces.

The Hamburgisches Magazin was a scientific journal containing essays, letters to the editor, etc., on the natural and physical sciences, often highlighting work from foreign scientists translated into German.

GREAT ASSOCIATION COPY. There is an OWNERSHIP BOOKPLATE of JOHANN FRIEDRICH BLUMENBACH, b.1752 d. 1840, on the front pastedown. Blumenbach was one of Germany's most important and influential early anthropologists. The bookplate has his PRINTED SIGNATURE on its face. I feel the Signature is PRINTED even though others claim it is HAND SIGNED / AUTOGRAPH. The two copies I found online, one held by a noted HISTORY OF SCIENCE bookseller and another held by the important Herzog August Bibliothek (Herzog August Library), claim that the signature on Blumenbach's bookplates is HAND SIGNED. However, the signatures on both the examples presented online, and mine, are EXACT in even the minutest details, and convince me that this is a printed signature. I have seen his signature on documents in the past and, like all signatures, they all had noticeable, even if sometimes small, deviations. These three examples have none that I can detect. A RARE BOOKPLATE and IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY.

GOOD MINUS CONDITION: The front cover is detached but present, the rear cover is just holding on with the cord bindings, the leather spine title labels are missing and the spine gilt has substantially worn off, the leather covered boards are rubbed and scraped, the gilt coat-of-arms on the front and rear covers is bright but scratched and rubbed; the marbling on the top edges has faded away but is visible on the front and bottom page edges; internally, there is light browning and spotting throughout but the text is always clear and fully legible, overall the pages remain tightly bound, clean and unmarked. A complete, presentable copy with a detached front cover.

This publication is often found disbound with the various articles sold separately. It is hard to find a complete volume (i.e. 6 bound issues).

About JOHANN FRIEDRICH BLUMENBACH (from Wikipedia):

******Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, b.1752 d.1840, was a German physician, naturalist, physiologist, and anthropologist. He is considered to be a main founder of zoology and anthropology as comparative, scientific disciplines. He was also important as a race theorist.

He was one of the first to explore the study of the human being as an aspect of natural history. His teachings in comparative anatomy were applied to his classification of human races, of which he claimed there were five, Caucasian, Mongolian, Malayan, Ethiopian, and American. He was a member of what modern historians call the Göttingen School of History.

Blumenbach's contemporaries considered him one of the great theorists of his day and a leading light of German science. Kant and Friedrich Schelling both called him "one of the most profound biological theorists of the modern era". The main text is in English, but includes some original Spanish texts in their original Spanish, as well as selected English translations from various travel logs of explorers along the Mexican coast during the years 1527-1791.

GOOD Condition: The bindings of both volumes have some shelf and edge wear but remain solid and are doing their job well, internally, Volume I has ink stamps stating: "Department of Geography / The University of Texas / Austin 12, Texas" on the blank endpapers, title page, and the folder at the rear (these are stamps of the department that produced and published the book and are not ex-lib stamps) otherwise the pages of both volumes are tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. The folder at the rear of Volume II that holds many folding maps is creased along the edge where it overhangs the book's text block. All the fold open maps and charts are present and are in VERY GOOD condition.

Typed Carbon Copy, typed on 8.5x11 inch thin paper, 110 pages plus a 4 page abstract at the end. Bound in a hardcover binder that pinches the pages together at their blank left margin.

Approved and SIGNED at the bottom of the title page by ZYGMUNT A. PIOTROWSKI, Murray Bilmes's Ph.D. Research Adviser.

(Zygmunt A. Piotrowski, b.1904 d.1985, was a Polish born American psychologist who worked on the Rorschach test. He received the Bruno Klopfer Award in 1971 and the Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions from the American Psychological Association in 1980. Piotrowski developed a method of analysis for the Rorschach test he termed perceptanalysis, which emphasized perception of the images rather than secondary associations.)

GOOD condition, the pages are lightly age toned, the typescript is best read with a bright white sheet placed beneath the page being read else these thin sheets allow the type of the underpages to come through making legibility difficult. The hardcover binding shows some wear but is doing its job well.

******The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect on personality of group influence. The following experiment was conducted: Thirty subjects received three Rorschach tests. The first was intended to provide an initial estimate of personality variables. The second, a two member group test, required subjects to compare impressions to the blots, ostensibly in order to establish as group responses those percepts they could agree on. The third was again an individual test. By comparing the first and third Rorschachs it became possible to determine how the group experience modified the Rorschach variables. By evaluating the personality referents of these variables, inferences were drawn concerning the personality modification. Subjects obviously did not themselves change; only their Rorschachs did. Unknown to each subject, his partner in the group test was the examiner's confederate and "saw" only responses he had been instructed to see...******

Interestingly, Fraulein Tamm (Herta Irene Tamm) studied dairy bacteriology under Dr. Henneberg in Kiel, then later emigrated to Los Angeles where her first job was as a bacteriologist at a local dairy. There is a nice obituary on Herta Irene Mock (née Tamm) on the SF Gate website.

VERY GOOD condition booklet, just lightly used and still tight, bright, clean and clear. The two laid in pamphlets have been folded, are toned, and both have a bit of handwriting at the top in German which I cannot translate.

******Wilhelm Hermann Henneberg, b.1871 d.1936,

was a German bacteriologist and first director of the Bacteriological Institute at the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy.

From 1897 he was employed in the vinegar department at the Institute of Fermentation in Berlin. From 1906 he headed the bacteriological department of the technical scientific laboratory of the Institute of Fermentation. In 1922 he was appointed to Kiel to head the Bacteriological Institute of the Prussian Experimental and Research Institute of Dairy Farming. In the eleven years as a university professor in Kiel, he supervised more than 80 dissertations and wrote several textbooks on the bacteriology of milk. Henneberg initiated the founding of the Federation of Technical Bacteriologists .
