About JOAQUIN NIN (from Wikipedia): ******Joaquín Nin y Castellanos (September 29, 1879, Havana - October 24, 1949, Havana) was a Cuban pianist and composer. Nin studied piano with Moritz Moszkowski and composition at the Schola Cantorum (where he taught from 1906 to 1908). He toured as a pianist and was known as a COMPOSER and ARRANGER of POPULAR SPANISH FOLK MUSIC. Nin was a member of the Spanish Academy and the French Legion of Honor. He was the father of Thorvald Nin, composer Joaquín Nin-Culmell, and writer Anaïs Nin with singer Rosa Culmell. In her diaries and fiction, his psychoanalytically oriented writer daughter Anaïs Nin often attempts to explain her own personality and problems by recalling how her father treated her as a child. She was also close to him off and on as an adult. Her "unexpurgated" diary volume Incest: From a Journal of Love describes an adult incestuous relationship with him. He also appears in her fiction. She describes him as an egotistical Don Juan, and she imitated him at times by being a "Doña Juana".******

About William Butler Yeats (from Wikipedia):

****** William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865 - 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, in his later years he served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival and, along with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn, and others, founded the Abbey Theatre, where he served as its chief during its early years. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature as the first Irishman so honored for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation." Behrman's handwritten inscription begins just after the printed "by S. N. Behrman", and it reads: "and / Eddie Morse. / S.N. Behrman / N.Y. Jan 19, '32". The NINE CAST MEMBERS and the DIRECTOR'S SIGNATURES are all on the "Characters" page. The Director was GUTHRIE McCLINTIC.

The Nine Cast Members were: Robert Douglas, Alexander Woollcott, Frances Rich, Paul Harvey, Francine Larrimore, Boris Marshalov, Louis Calhern, Edwin Morse, and Helen Walpole. (Note: This was one of the few plays in which ALEXANDER WOOLLCOTT, the famous writer and wit, acted. Paul Harvey was the actor who died in 1955. Helen Walpole was an actress active in the 1930s who went on to be a noted writer for radio and eventually a prominent figure in the Daughters of the Confederacy.) Tipped in on a blank prelim page is a TELEGRAM to EDWARD MORSE at the BELASCO THEATRE. The Telegram is dated NOVEMBER 9, 1931, the date of the OPENING NIGHT PERFORMANCE. The telegram reads: "DEAR EDDIE YOUVE BEEN A SWEETHEART IN A NICE WAY OF COURSE LOVE AND KISSES SAM." Presumably this was a telegram sent by S.N. Behrman (Samuel Behrman) to Edward Morse, the Stage Manager for the theatrical production (as well as one of the actors), who was also, according to the inscription by Behrman on the title page, a co-author of the play. Someone hand wrote McCLINTIC at the bottom of the telegram, perhaps meaning that the telegram should be shown to Guthrie McClintic, the play's Director. The play was the basis for the 1933 film of the same name, starring Carole Lombard. Hardcover Book, no dustjacket, 5x7.5", 235 pages. Published by Farrar & Rinehart, New York, 1931. First Edition, with the date 1931 and the Publisher's Colophon on the copyright page with no additional printings noted. GOOD condition, the front and rear covers have staining / discoloration near the spine and a bit on the spine, some scrapes here and there, lightly bumped corners, and some wear to the spine ends, but are sturdy and still doing there job well; internally very nice, pages lightly toned with age offsetting to the first few pages, including the title page, from something that had been laid in but is no longer present (newspaper article?), otherwise the pages are tight, bright and clean; and all the signatures and inscriptions are bright and clear. The tipped in telegram is has a chip at its top edge and is worn and creased from handling, but remains solid and clear. Wonderful with the ELEVEN SIGNATURES and TELEGRAM, and BEHRMAN'S Generous Inscription giving authorship credit to Eddie Morse.

A solid copy. An interesting intersection of John Holmes, John Ciardi, and Ruth Pitter, all in one place. About RUTH PITTER (from Wikipedia): ******Emma Thomas "Ruth" Pitter, CBE, FRSL, b.1897 d.1992, was a 20th century British poet. She was the first woman to receive the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1955, and was appointed a CBE in 1979 to honour her many contributions to English literature. In 1974, she was named a "Companion of Literature", the highest honour given by the Royal Society of Literature. She was a good friend of C. S. Lewis, who admired her poetry. He often invited her critique of his poems. Pitter is considered by many Lewis scholars to have had an effect on his writing in the 1940s and 1950s. W. B. Yeats, Robin Skelton and Thom Gunn also appreciated Pitter's work and praised her poetry. Lord David Cecil once remarked that Pitter was one of the most original and moving poets then living. Despite some praise Pitter has been mostly overlooked. It is only in recent years that there has been a renewed interest in her work.****** About JOHN HOLMES (from Wikipedia): ******JOHN HOLMES, b.1904 d.1962, was a poet and critic. He was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, and both attended and taught at Tufts University where he was a professor of literature and modern poetry for 28 years. His students included Anne Sexton, Richard Wilbur, May Sarton, John Ciardi, Maxine Kumin, and many others. He wrote ten volumes of poetry, but it was his influence on a generation of poets that was his greatest contribution to poetry.****** About JOHN CIARDI (from Wikipedia): ******John Anthony Ciardi, b.1916 d.1986, was an American poet, translator, and etymologist. While primarily known as a poet, he also translated Dante's Divine Comedy, wrote several volumes of children's poetry, pursued etymology, contributed to the Saturday Review as a columnist and longtime poetry editor, and directed the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in Vermont. In 1959, Ciardi published a book on how to read, write, and teach poetry, How Does a Poem Mean?, which has proven to be among the most used books of its kind.******

Softcovers, booklet, side stapled, 5.5x8 inches, 77 pages.

GOOD condition, some light soiling and signs of handling to the covers, otherwise tight, bright, clean and clear. A nice copy.

Helen W. Wood was a lifelong white activist working to defend the rights and save the souls of African Americans. In the 1930s she was a Communist Party organizer. She converted to Christianity while working in the defense of an African American youth in Iowa charged with murder. The Iowa Communist Party opposed her work, but her efforts were supported by the local evangelicals. This began her conversion from Communism to Evangelical Christianity, a process completed in a Los Angeles skid row mission where she continued to work to better the lives of African Americans in need of help.

Though an Anti-Communist tract, it is also an interesting autobiography that envisions evangelical Christians as people who would not tolerate racism (especially from a President).

    Scarce, especially so SIGNED.

The writing on the note begins at the very top of the piece of paper, indicating that the note may have been the last part of a longer letter with only this last part clipped and kept by the previous owner, I have no way of knowing for certain. The note is laid in the following book: CHRISTIANITY AMONG THE RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD, by ARNOLD TOYNBEE. Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, 1957. First Edition, First Printing, with the first printing code A9-57[H] on the copyright page and the letter A printed below the text on the rear dustjacket flap. Hardcover Book in Dustjacket, top page edges stained blue, 5.5x8 inches, 116 pages. VERY GOOD book, slight slant to the spine, a bit of shelf wear to the spine ends and corner tips, overall just lightly used and still tight, bright, clean and unmarked; in a GOOD dustjacket that has scraping to its folds, creasing and some chipping to its edges, spine ends and corner tips, and some rubbing, but is still bright and doing its job well. The dustjacket retains its $2.75 printed price at the top of the front flap. The handwriting and signature of Arnold Toynbee are bright and clear. The paper his message is written on has a couple folds.

SCARCE with the SIGNATURES of CEDRIC HARDWICKE, GERTRUDE BERG and ELEVEN OTHERS. About A MAJORITY OF ONE (from Wikipedia): ******The play is a drama concerning racial prejudice involving Mrs. Jacoby, a Jewish widow from Brooklyn, New York, and Koichi Asano, a millionaire widower from Tokyo. Mrs. Jacoby is sailing to Japan with her daughter and foreign service officer son-in-law who is being posted to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. She still considers the country the enemy responsible for the death of her son during World War II, but her feelings change when she meets Mr. Asano on board the ship. When she advises her family of Mr. Asano's desire to court her, Mrs. Jacoby's daughter, whose loyalty is to her mother rather than her husband, objects to the possibility of an interracial marriage. The 1959-60 Broadway production was directed by Dore Schary and ran for 3 previews and 556 performances, with Gertrude Berg and Cedric Hardwicke. In 1961 Spigelgass adapted his play for a Warner Bros. film starring Rosalind Russell, Alec Guinness, Madlyn Rhue and Ray Danton and directed by Mervyn LeRoy.******

(The first quote in the inscription "I am doing nothing, so I read old books!" is a play of words on one of Bly's translations in the book that reads "I am doing nothing, so I read old poems." I suppose Bly is referring to the fact that he is rereading his old book The Lion's Tail and Eyes. The second quote in the inscription is Robert Bly quoting one of the lines from a Bill Duffy poem in the book.) There is also a laid in postcard SIGNED by ROBERT BLY and with the return address label of Robert Bly. About ROBERT M. HARTWELL, b. 1932 d. 1995 (from a Harvard University website): ******From the beginning of his career at the University of Chicago and continuing during his tenure at professor of Chinese history at the University of Pennsylvania and into his retirement in Wyoming, the late Robert M. Hartwell was intensely concerned with the study of social and economic change in Chinese history. Working mainly with middle-period sources (mid-Tang into Yuan), he produced a number of unusually helpful research aids and a series of influential research articles. Readers of Hartwell's work will immediately notice that his research involved the citation of an unusually large number of sources on any given point and the collection of a considerable body of supporting data. Hartwell preferred to rely upon the preponderance of evidence; he rarely argued from the isolated example. He was in fact devoted to the collection of large sets of data and, finding a lack of this kind of research in the scholarly literature, he set out to create a body of extensive data sets himself. By the mid-1970s he had defined a program to amass the most extensive prosopographical data set ever created for the study of Chinese history for any period, and he continued his work with the help of students and especially his wife and collaborator Marianne Carlson Hartwell until his untimely death in 1995. The Hartwells willed their estate to the Harvard-Yenching Institute, in the conviction that Harvard would see to the preservation and dissemination of their research.******
