NASHVILLE, Original Film Release Dialogue Script dated July 11, 1975. A Robert Altman film. Screenplay by Joan Tewkesbury.

A RELEASE DIALOGUE SCRIPT is a special version of the screenplay, a post production version that provides a log of every visual action and every audible sound for each of the frames and footage on the reels of a film. Basically a written copy of a film. One could conceivably create a duplicate of a film based on its Release Dialogue Script.

Basically a written copy of a film. One could conceivably create a duplicate of a film based on its Release Dialogue Script.

COPY of and SIGNED by the film's Title Designer, DAN PERRI, a highly regarded film title designer

who worked on the films Star Wars, Taxi Driver, All The President's Men, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Exorcist, and many, many more. It is his personal copy, with his SIGNATURE and his ownership NAME/TITLE LABEL on the first page.

Black textured paper covers, inner pages photocopied on 8.5x11 inch light green paper (photocopying was, and still is, how original copies of screenplays were quickly produced and distributed to actors, producers, directors, editors and others involved in a film production), pages printed on one side only, 3-hole punched and bound with 3 brass brads. Approximately 200 pages (pages are numbered by reel, there being 8 reels, each reel with a part A and B).

VERY GOOD condition, the covers have some light general wear, the three brass brads have oxidized, the inner pages are lightly age toned, the first and last page have creases and light soiling, there is a stiff crease to the bottom corner of the last few pages, "NASHVILLE" is written in black marker on the spine page edges, otherwise the inner pages are just lightly used, tight, bright, clean and clear.

RARE ORIGINAL, SIGNED, RELEASE DIALOGUE SCRIPT of one of the greatest American films of the 20th century.

About Robert Altman's Film NASHVILLE (from Wikipedia):

******Nashville is a 1975 American satirical musical ensemble comedy drama film directed by Robert Altman. The film follows various people involved in the country and gospel music businesses in Nashville, Tennessee, over a five-day period, leading up to a gala concert for a populist outsider running for President on the Replacement Party ticket.

Nashville was released by Paramount Pictures in the summer of 1975, and opened to critical acclaim. Patrick McGilligan of The Boston Globe wrote that it was "perhaps the most talked about American movie since Orson Welles' Citizen Kane." Nashville was nominated for a total of 11 Golden Globe Awards, to date the highest number of nominations received by one film. It was also nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Altman), and Best Supporting Actress (both Lily Tomlin and Ronee Blakely). Selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1992, it is now considered Altman's magnum opus, and by many critics to be one of the greatest films of all time.******

    About DAN PERRI (from Wikipedia):

******Daniel Richard Perri, b.1945, is a film and television title sequence designer, responsible for the main titles of many films including: The Exorcist (1973), Nashville (1975), Taxi Driver (1976), Star Wars (1977), Raging Bull (1980), Airplane! (1980), and Suspiria (2018).

Possibly Perri's best known title sequence project came about in 1976 when he was introduced to director George Lucas, who invited Perri to Industrial Light & Magic. Perri eventually developed a concept for presenting a textual introduction to the film in which the credits are shown distorted by a sharp perspective and rolling along towards a distant vanishing point. Lucas approved the idea and Perri produced sketches and prototype mechanical artwork that gave birth to the now familiar opening crawl sequence that appears in the Star Wars films.

Perri has stated that Lucas offered him a share of royalties from the film in lieu of his ordinary fee; Perri rejected the offer and has regretted his choice ever since.******

The inside rear cover has the number stamp "855", which probably indicates this is copy #855. Great ASSOCIATION COPY. The previous owner was the actor JACK PALANCE, with a "JACK PALANCE COLLECTION" BOOKPLATE from the 2006 auction of his personal property that took place just months before his death. What makes the PALANCE association most interesting is that JACK PALANCE STARRED AS FIDEL CASTRO in the 1969 film CHE!, about Latin American revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara. Softcovers / Wrappers, pocketbook size 4x7", 165 pages. Condition: The title page has been trimmed for 1/4" at its front (or perhaps gutter)edge, leaving it 1/4" shorter at the front than the other pages.

It is possible that the title page was excised and sent to Cintio Vitier for his signature and then reattached upon its return with signature, because the page looks a bit like it was tipped in, though very well done. Perhaps this was done by Palance himself, wanting a memento of his role as Fidel Castro. Otherwise the book, including the title page, is in FINE condition, tight, bright, sharp and clean. The spine is not creased, the book looks and feels unread. 1978 FIRST EDITION, LIMITED EDITION, SIGNED by AUTHOR, with JACK PALANCE ASSOCIATION. Rare as such. About CINTIO VITIER (from Wikipedia): ******Cintio Vitier (1921-2009) was a Cuban poet, essayist, and novelist. Vitier won the Cuban National Prize for Literature (1988), the Juan Rulfo Prize (2002), and the medal of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. He also received the title of Official of Arts and Letters of France. Upon winning the Juan Rulfo Prize, the award jury called him "one of the most important writers of his generation".****** About the Jack Palance 2006 Auction (from a 2006 article found on the Internet): ******Movie cowboy empties his saddlebags. Jack Palance's collection up for auction at his farm. October 10, 2006|By Diana Morse Of The Morning Call. Auctioneers will put more than 3,000 items collected over a five-decade career by veteran actor Jack Palance on the block Thursday. The auction will be held at Palance's Holly-Brooke farm near Hazleton. Palance, 87, is perhaps best known for his Oscar winning role as Curly in 1991's CITY SLICKERS and his chilling portrayal of the hired gunslinger Wilson in the 1953 western SHANE. The retired Palance is now living in California. Jim Chamberlin of Keystone State Auctioneers reports a lot of interest in the three-day auction.******

NEAR FINE condition, a bright and beautiful copy. Would look great mounted and/or framed.

From the Broadside: "Within a very few years of the publication of my Collected Poems (1938)... I renounced further trying the way of poetry... saying: I would write no more poems - and I wrote no more poems... (however) I wrote for (a close friend), in the 1978 Christmastime, a poem, marked as a poem for him only, giving it the title HOW A POEM CAME TO BE. I kept no copy of this privately written and given poem, and forgot the writing and the giving of it... I chanced, recently, to tell my friend of receiving a request for a poem to publish in broadside form from the Lord John Press, indicating my feeling some surprise that Mr. Yellin, the Press's director, should not have been aware that FOR FORTY YEARS there had been NO NEW POEMS of mine. But my friend reminded me that about a year ago there HAD been a new poem - the one I wrote for him; and he urged me to let him release it to me from its private status of being a poem for him only... I give here the poem, given him, to be out in the world..."

LAURA RIDING JACKSON, 1901-1991, was an iconoclastic American Poet. She left New England at the age of 25 to live with ROBERT GRAVES and his wife, Nancy Nicholson. The triangle did not suit her, and Laura Riding tried to commit suicide in 1927. Thereafter Robert Graves divorced his wife and lived together with Laura Riding in Majorca, France, England and Switzerland, and even went with her when she returned to the United States. They bitterly broke up in 1939. In 1941 Laura Riding Jackson renounced poetry, married Schuyler B. Jackson, and lived quietly with him in Wabasso, Florida, until her death in 1991. In the 60s, 70s and 80s she wrote a number of pieces explaining her reasons for renouncing poetry, but no poetry. This is apparently THE ONLY POEM written by Laura Riding Jackson since 1941.

You can read much more about LAURA RIDING on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet.

Bound together with a "Bio-Bibliography" by Haas himself, that includes a complete bibliography of his printed works - Books and Monographs, Articles and Prefaces, Editorships, Translations, Professional Writings, Lectures, etc. VERY GOOD condition, a bit of wear to the covers' spine ends and corner tips, overall tight, bright and clean. A lovely copy. Comes with the original mailing envelope, with the handwritten address of Donald Gallup and the Rubber Stamped Return Address of Robert Haas. The envelope was sent from Germany, where Haas resided at the time. The envelope is stamped. The envelope is well worn, but a great addition to the history of this particular copy. About DONALD GALLUP (to whom the book is Inscribed) - from his NY Times Obituary: ******Donald Gallup, the Yale literary bibliographer who in 1968 confirmed the discovery of the long-lost manuscript of T. S. Eliot's Waste Land, died in Branford, Conn., on Wednesday. He was 87. Mr. Gallup spent more than 30 years as a curator in the Yale Collection of American Literature. Patricia C. Willis, the current curator of the Yale Collection of American Literature, said she considered Mr. Gallup, who retired in 1980, "the premier bibliographer for both Eliot and Ezra Pound, specializing in finding the first appearances of their work and documenting their creativity."******

Sean Bailey, Ted Griffin (Afonson Payort)

SOLACE. A Screenplay by Sean Bailey and Ted Griffin. Dated August 19, 2008. This is an Early Working Draft Screenplay. Solace was released in France in 2015 and in the United States in 2016, long after this 2008 draft was written. In the years since this draft, the film went

through numerous changes, including major changes to the script, the replacement of the planned Director, the replacement of various Cast members, etc. The Film was originally envisioned as a SEQUEL to the film SEVEN, but that eventually was changed too. Perhaps this early script was the screenplay for the planned sequel, I don't know. This DRAFT SCREENPLAY was presumably owned by someone intimately involved in the film, though I have…

Perhaps this early script was the screenplay for the planned sequel, I don't know. This DRAFT SCREENPLAY was presumably owned by someone intimately involved in the film, though I have no idea who he/she might be. The title page is filled with handwritten notes in pencil, including the names of potential actors who might play various characters (e.g. Laura Finney, Naomi Watts, Hilary Swank, Samuel Jackson, etc.). 45 pages have at least a bit of yellow highlighting, and most of the highlights are accompanied with brief relevant handwritten notes. All the sections that have highlighting have been highlighted by hand on this copy (i.e. the highlighting is unique to this copy - as are all the notes in pencil). Black paper covers. Inner pages are photocopied on plain 8.5x11" paper, printed on one side only. (Photocopies were, and still are, common for draft scripts.) The pages are 3 hole punched and bound with 2 brass brads. 119 pages plus the title page and a final page that states "This Script Was Prepared by Warner Bros. Pictures Script Processing Department".

VERY GOOD condition, the pages are lightly toned, overall solid, bright, clean and clear. SCARCE, this is the only copy I have or have seen. About the Film SOLACE (from Wikipedia): ******Solace is an American mystery thriller film directed by Afonso Poyart. It was written by Peter Morgan and Sean Bailey from a story by Ted Griffin. The film stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Abbie Cornish, Matt Gerald, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Kenny Johnson and Sharon Lawrence. A psychic doctor, John Clancy (Anthony Hopkins), works with an FBI special agent (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in search of a serial killer (Colin Farrell). Solace was initially intended to be a sequel to the film Seven. However, that idea was later scrapped and Solace was then developed as a stand alone feature. On May 10, 2012, it was announced that Brazilian director Afonso Poyart was attached to direct. Filming began in the last week of May 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia. The film was released in France in 2015, and in the United States on December 16, 2016.******

    Metropolitan Opera

OPERA CAVALCADE - STORY OF THE METROPOLITAN. Published by The Metropolitan Opera Guild, New York, 1938.

Doubling as an AUTOGRAPH ALBUM, the book contains SIGNATURES of 55 OPERA SINGERS collected by a fan over the OPERATIC SEASONS 1943-1948. The signatures are on opera program covers, cut pages, and clipped sheets, that have been glued on (most at the corners) to the pages and inside covers of the book. The signatures are in ink and pencil.

On the title page the previous owner lists some of the operas he/she attended, and the dates they were performed.

On page 63 there is a list of all the members of the "current" Metropolitan Opera Company (i.e. 1938 when this book was published). There…

On the title page the previous owner lists some of the operas he/she attended, and the dates they were performed.

On page 63 there is a list of all the members of the "current" Metropolitan Opera Company (i.e. 1938 when this book was published). There are check marks by twenty-one of the names. Those names make up part of the 55 signatures collected in this album/book.

Signatures include: Karin Branzell, Thelma Votipka, Edward Johnson, Bidu Sayão, Nicola Moscona, Patrice Munsel, Ezio Pinza, Rose Bampton, Frances Greer, Richard Tucker, Zinka Milanov, Lily Pons, Astrid Varnay, Florence Quartararo, and many, many more.

The book - Opera Cavalcade: The Story of the Metropolitan, is a history of the Metropolitan Opera. It is filled with b&w photographs of stage productions and singers, and includes a nice frontispiece photograph of Edward Johnson by Steichen.

Condition: The book is in GOOD MINUS condition, worn through at the edges and corners, with rubs, scrapes and scratches to the boards; but is solid and has a cover image that is bright and attractive. The inner pages have some age toning and foxing, and two pages have offsetting likely from a newspaper page laid in at some point; otherwise the inner pages are tight, bright, clean and clear. The signatures are mostly sharp and clear though some of the pencil signatures are fading, but even those are easily legible with only one that has faded into near illegibility, at least according to my aging eyes.

A wonderful look at the world of Opera as it was in the mid 1940s, filled with signatures of those who were part of that world.

A unique treasure for the lover of opera in your life or soul.

Published by Boosey & Hawkes, undated but likely circa 1970, a later printing. (First published by Birchard & Company in 1937, the rights to this work were transferred from Blanchard to Boosey & Hawkes in 1957. Any copies showing Boosey & Hawkes as the publisher were published post 1957.)

Musical score, softcovers, 7x10.25 inches, 112 page score plus 8 introductory pages, including a facsimile of a program for the original 1937 production which was titled: "The Second Hurricane: A Play Opera for High School Children". (I like how "Children" was changed to "Performers" in later editions.) There is a long tradition of great composers writing operas to be performed by young performers.

VERY GOOD condition, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A lovely copy.

RARE with the SIGNATURE and INSCRIPTION of AARON COPLAND from 1972, and the Association to the notable NY Philharmonic supporter Martin Riskin.
