An unusual item titled WAR DIARY. Appears self-published. Bound in plain white wrappers. 318 pages printed on one side only. A week-by-week, day-by-day account of the atrocities being committed in the war in Kosovo. Reads incredibly like what is happening in Ukraine.

I believe the author to be Sefer Jashari, an Albanian. The last five pages are "Accounts From Displaced Women and Children - Internal Refugees in the Centre for Protection of Women and Children, Pristina". All those interviewed in this section were part of the Jashari family, including Sela Jashari, Sefer Jashari's wife".

"13 September 1998: Serb troops with 37 tanks and tens of lorries and other vehicles left for Dushkaje region of Giakove. Thousands of Albanians are living in the open in the region. They all fear of a Serb massacre."

"16 January 1999: Serb forces killed and massacred between 60 to 80 Albanians in the village of Recak village of Shtimje. Bodies of the majority of victims are slain. There are killed and butchered people of different ages starting from a 6 weeks baby to a 90 year old man. Among the victims are women, children and old people...some of the victims have eyes taken out..."

"9 March 1999: The 1,500 people of Ivaje village of Hani i elezit are under siege. The situation is dramatic, where not only residents, but the Refuting people from the attacked village are not able to reach out to safety while the Serb tanks and troops are pounding the village and closing in on it. OSCE KVM is called for help to step in and save the population, most of them women and children, as well as elderly. Serb forces have already torched and destroyed 100 houses of the village."

LENNY BRUCE - handwritten notes and typed letter, regarding HEROIN.

Includes:

Lenny Bruce's HANDWRITTEN NOTES to his SECRETARY, JAN MATTHEWS, with instructions for a letter to be sent to his ATTORNEY, Godfrey Isaac. The notes are written on both sides of four 5x8 inch notepad sheets and both sides of a cocktail napkin (i.e. on ten sides).

A typed, 8.5x11 inch carbon LETTER to his Attorney composed by Bruce's secretary from his notes.

The envelope Bruce used to send his notes to his secretary. The address is HAND WRITTEN by Lenny Bruce. The envelope is stamped and postmarked "Chicago November 13, 1962" then "Los Angeles, November 14, 1962". Interestingly, Bruce sealed the envelope with a "Solomon's Cedar Street Liquors / Chicago" sticker.

The notes and letter concern Bruce's upcoming Los Angeles trial on heroin charges. They contain ideas Bruce believed his attorney could use for his defense, such as: the heroin wasn't tested correctly, no one knows for certain if it was heroin, the lab tests were not done correctly, the powder was unidentifiable, etc.

Lenny Bruce must have come up with these ideas while drinking at a bar, as the cocktail napkin seems to contain his initial thoughts. It's amazing that his secretary was able to form these somewhat rambling notes into a sensible letter, but she did.

The LETTER is a carbon copy of the letter sent to Bruce's attorney, presumably a file copy. It is typed on Lenny Bruce's personal letterhead, and dated November 15, 1962 (the day after the envelope containing Bruce's notes was postmarked as received in Los Angeles). Typed at the bottom is "LB:JM", i.e. Lenny Bruce / Jan Matthews. It is an unsigned carbon.

The letter reads in part: "I was arrested for possession of a substance whose nature is not recognizable to the untrained eye - only an expert can give this report...Ask if there are any other chemicals that are not illegal in their natural state that might cause the powder to show...there is heroin in it...The expert witness, the chemist, didn't test it, else he would know what percent of heroin there was in it...Very truly yours, Lenny Bruce."

CONDITION: The four note sheets and cocktail napkin show some signs of age, handling and use, but are solid and the handwriting is bold, bright and clear; the carbon letter has its lower corner torn off and substantial edge wear, edge tears and creasing, though not significantly affecting the text which is clear and entirely legible.

Bruce's Los Angeles drug charges were dropped before they went to trial, but these notes and letter from November 1962 show the relentless hounding by the legal system that Lenny Bruce was having to bear. He died four years after writing these notes, in 1966, at the age of forty.

Attorney Godfrey Isaac died in 2015 at the age of 90. He represented some of Hollywood's elite in civil and family matters, including Judy Garland and Anthony Quinn. He was also a criminal attorney and, in addition to Lenny Bruce, represented Watergate defendant Charles Colson and RFK assassin Sirhan Sirhan.

Separately bound PAPER of LEONARD STEIN delivered at the 1974 VIENNA CONGRESS of the INTERNATIONAL SCHÖNBERG SOCIETY. His paper is titled FROM INCEPTION TO REALIZATION IN THE SKETCHES OF SCHOENBERG. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by LEONARD STEIN on the cover page: "to Milton and Judy / My paper for the Schoenberg Congress / 4 years late / Best wishes, as always / Leonard". Booklet, stapled pages, cover page plus 16 pages numbered 213 to 228. Title page in German, Leonard Stein paper in English, verso of the last page is the first page of another paper and is in German. If anyone out there thinks the author was proud of this book her inscription should clear that up!

Hardcovers, decorated cloth covered boards, 5x7.5 inches, 123 pages.

GOOD Condition: The covers' spine is sunned and the spine titles have faded, the front and rear boards are sunned and a bit soiled, and the corner tips are worn, nonetheless the covers are solid, their decorated boards attractive, and they are doing their job well, Internally nice, many of the pages remain uncut, the text block is cracked at a number of places but is holding well with the sewn binding. A solid, presentable copy.

About LOUISE IMOGEN GUINEY (from Wikipedia):

******Louise Imogen Guiney, b.1861 d.1920, was an American poet, essayist and editor, born in Roxbury, Massachusetts. She worked at various jobs, including serving as a postmistress and working in the field of cataloging at the Boston Public Library. She was a member of several literary and social clubs, and according to her friend Ralph Adams Cram was "the most vital and creative personal influence" on their circle of writers and artists in Boston. While in Boston she was believed to be in a "Boston Marriage" (the cohabitation of women, sexual or not) with the author Alice Brown, b.1857 d.1948.

In 1901, Guiney moved to Oxford, England, to focus on her poetry and essay writing. Soon after she began to suffer from illness and in 1920 died of a stroke near Gloucestershire, England, age 59. Much of her work was left unfinished. After Guiney died the noted historian and novelist Eva Tenison became enchanted with her works and in 1921 published "Louise Imogen Guiney; an Appreciation", and in 1923 published "Louise Imogen Guiney: Her Life and Works 1861-1920" and "A Bibliography of Louise Imogen Guiney 1861-1920". Tenison also published "The Recusant Poets: An Unpublished Work of Louise Imogen Guiney and Fr. Geoffrey Bliss, S.J."******

******Frederick Woodward Skiff, b.1867 d.1947, was an author, noted collector, bibliophile, expert on Americana and American Literature, and founder of the Acorn Club. Over the course of his life, Skiff amassed one of the most important private libraries in the United States, with particular emphasis on literature and history. After his death in 1947, the library's contents were sold at auction by Butterfield & Butterfield (now Bonham's) in San Francisco. Many of the books made their ways into other important collections. About MARY ELLEN RICHMOND (from Wikipedia):

******Mary Ellen Richmond, b.1861 d.1928, was an American social work pioneer. She is regarded as the mother of professional social work along with Jane Addams. She founded social case work, the first method of social work and was herself a Caseworker.

Richmond was raised by her widowed maternal grandmother, Mehitable Harris, and two aunts. Her grandmother was an active women's suffragist who was well known for being a spiritualist and a radical. She grew up being constantly surrounded by discussions of suffrage, political and social beliefs, and spiritualism.

In 1900, she became general secretary of the Philadelphia Society of Organizing Charity. While there she advocated for legislation for compulsory education, against child labor, and for requiring support for spousal desertion. In addition, Mary believed the government should create a children's bureau and a juvenile court system. These were all radical ideas in her time.

In 1909 she helped establish networks of social workers and a method by which they did their work. This all started when she became the director of the Charity Organizational Department of the Russell Sage Foundation in New York City. While director, Mary E. Richmond worked to improve record keeping, improved training for caseworkers, and helped implement new social works programs. She believed a firm cooperation between social workers, educators and the health care system was crucial to successfully helping those in need. Her career took off from charity organization leadership in Baltimore and Philadelphia to an executive position with the prestigious Russell Sage Foundation in New York City.

Some of the more notable contributions of Mary Richmond were her fight for legislation to help deserted wives, the founding of the Pennsylvania Child Labor Committee, her work to establish a juvenile court, and the creation of a Housing Association.

A large part of her work was dedicated to research in the field of social work. She created methodologies on how to establish contact and conduct information gathering conversations. She is considered to be the first to have established social work as a profession.******

MEL RAMOS Illustrated Catalog for the Exhibition that took place at the Levy Gallery in Hamburg, Germany, in 1996.

Contains 17 pages of reproductions of Ramos's Pin-Up art from the show. The exhibition was titled; "Unfinished Paintings and The Lost Paintings of 1965".

SIGNED and INSCRIBED by MEL RAMOS on the page with a NUDE PIN-UP PAINTING of HIS WIFE LOLITA (aka LETA). The inscription reads:

"To Lolita / The love of my life / Mel Ramos / May 1996".

Mel and Leta fell in love in High School, got married in 1955, and stayed married for 63 years until Mel Ramos' death in 2018. Sweet. Leta died two years later.

The catalog has a yellow post-it note on the title-page that says "LETA'S", which I presume means this was Leta's copy. On the backside of the title-page is a b&w photo of "Leta and Mel Ramos in 1995".

The last card is the Signature / Limitation card which has James Carver's signature and the statement that this is copy 3 of only 12 produced. In the text, James Carver tells about growing up with his brother Raymond and reveals biographical information that has not appeared elsewhere, not even in the last major biography of Carver. There are also 10 5x7 inch b&w photographs taken from Carver's personal family photo album. Some of these photos are shown here for the first time.

Olga Sinclair (born 1957 in Panama City) is a female Panamanian artist. In addition to being an amazing artist, Olga Sinclair has a fondness for sharing her love of art with children (e.g. on January 18, 2014 in Panama City, Sinclair organized 5,084 children to paint simultaneously for three minutes to break the world record; the piece depicted a set of Canal locks as the event commemorated 100 years of the Panama Canal). Olga Sinclair is currently Panama's Cultural Ambassador.

This striking photograph of renowned Bebop Jazz Bass Player Oscar Pettiford is from the iconic 1949 record album THE JAZZ SCENE (Mercury Records, Limited to 5000 copies) and shot by noted Photographer and Filmmaker Gjon Mili (Jammin' The Blues). B&W photo, 12" x 13.25", upper white margin with binding holes as issued (the Jazz Scene album was made in a notebook style binding allowing the owner to move or rearrange the records, artwork, photos and text.) ALSO INCLUDED are FOUR ADDITIONAL RARE PHOTOGRAPHS (unsigned) from the Jazz Scene Album and shot by Gjon Mili: LESTER YOUNG, RED CALLENDER'S hand on his double bass, and two photographs of CHARLIE PARKER. The Five Photographs are all in VERY GOOD CONDITION: some light wear, a touch of age toning, otherwise solid and bright, and Oscar Pettiford's original signature is bold and bright.

OSCAR PETTIFORD (1922-1960) legendary American Jazz Bassist, Cellist and Composer was only 37 years old when he died. Pettiford remains a unique and eminent figure whose musical influence resonates even more today. Born on a reservation in Oklahoma to a Choctaw mother and African American Cherokee father, he came of age during the bebop era becoming a leading innovator of the newly emergent avant-garde jazz scene.

Gjon Mili (1904-1984) Important Jazz Photographer and Filmmaker whose work changed the history of jazz on film.
