LAID-IN is a HANDWRITTEN LETTER, SIGNED and DATED by RAMMOHUN ROY, written on both sides of a 5x8 inch (12.5x20 cm) piece of paper. The letter reads:

"My dear Sir / Nothing can give me greater pleasure than receiving your note accompanied by two other letters and a parcel of books from America and I beg you will accept my sincere thanks for your kind remembrance of me and for your kind wishes for my health and that of my son. / I hope I shall be able to do myself the pleasure of calling upon you and spending a few happy hours in conversation with you. / With my best compliments to Mr. Foster I remain / Yours very Sincerely / Rammohun Roy / May 2nd 1829."

ASSOCIATIONS in the LETTER and the BOOK:

MR. FOSTER, to whom the LETTER is written, is most certainly REV. JOHN FOSTER, the noted BRITISH ESSAYIST and MINISTER who, in his later years lived in Stapleton, Gloucestershire, making him a neighbor of Raja Ram Mohun Roy who, in his later years, lived at Stapleton Grove. John Foster and the Raja became close and had many discussions. John Foster, along with Rammohun Roy, became involved in the Serampore missionaries controversy. John Foster was one of a small group of mourners invited to the private funeral of Rammohun Roy that took place on October 18, 1933, on the grounds of Stapleton Grove. (See "John Foster Essayist" on Wikipedia.)

The BOOK has the ownership SIGNATURE of SAMUEL JOSEPH MAY on the rear pastedown, and that of his son JOSEPH MAY on the front pastedown. Samuel Joseph May's signature is florid, bright and clear, Joseph May's signature on the front pastedown has been inked out but is still legible. SAMUEL JOSEPH MAY was an important American Abolitionist, Women's Rights Advocate, Supporter of Universal Education, and Unitarian Minister. In America he championed many of the same causes that Rammohun Roy advocated. (See "Samuel Joseph May" on Wikipedia.)

    CONDITION:

The LETTER is in VERY GOOD condition, it has a couple horizontal folds and a couple associated folds likely made to fit it into an envelope (no envelope is present), there are remnants of several pea-size hinge tags on the rear left margin where the book was hinged onto the first "Preface" page (the hinges look like they could be removed with care but I have left them as is), overall the letter is solid and clean with writing that is bright and clear.

The BOOK is in FAIR condition, the covers are disbound but present, the boards have scrapes and are worn through along the edges, the spine cloth covering is toned, peeling and worn at the ends, and has scrapes and creases, the title label is chipped and worn; internally, the front pastedown has white paper remnants likely from a removed bookplate and the signature of Joseph May that has been inked out but is still legible, there is a loose and edge chipped front and rear blank endpaper, the frontispiece and title pages are coming loose at the top 2 inches but holding, the pages have lightly toned, many sections are cracked at the binding but not split (i.e. the text block is shaky but holding), there are scattered pencil margin check marks and lines noting certain passages, and a few relevant pencil margin notes (perhaps by Joseph May?), overall the text is complete with printing that is bright, clean, clear and legible throughout.

RAMMOHUN ROY HANDWRITTEN LETTER in a nearly impossible to find 1825 edition of his book PRECEPTS OF JESUS together with important ASSOCIATIONS.

Though limitation is not stated it is known that these were all printed in limited numbers. SIX of the calendars are SIGNED by RAMSESS on the front cover, some somewhat obscurely with pen, some boldly with black marker; most are also DATED. The eleven calendars are for the years: 2002 (signed and dated 2001 at the bottom, above the printed name of Lester Young); 2003 (signed and dated 2002 at the bottom, just above the printed date of 2003); 2004 (signed and dated 2003 at the bottom white area); 2005 (signed and dated 2004 in the bottom area of the blue jacket image); 2007 Two Copies (ONE copy is signed along the white side margin); 2008 Two Copies (ONE copy is signed along the at the bottom); 2009, 2010, 2012. (The dated copies are each dated in the year prior to the year of the calendar because calendars are always printed well before the year they are marking.) Kisasi Ramsess, known as RAMSESS, was part of the revival, and has become part of the heart and soul, of the Leimert Park area of Los Angeles. Leimert Park has, over the years, become the L.A. center of both historical and contemporary African-American art, music, and culture. From the Estate of Albert Birdsong and Barbara Ruth Richardson Birdsong, of Benicia, California. Barbara Birdsong outlived her husband and died in 2018. She was originally from Shreveport, Louisiana. The Birdsongs had an interesting gathering of African American literature and ephemera. About REBEKA NJAU (from Wikipedia):

******Rebeka Njau (née Nyanjega; born 15 December 1932) was Kenya's first female playwright and a pioneer in the representation of African women in literature. Her writing has addressed topics such as female genital mutilation and homosexuality. Her earliest works appeared under the name "Rebecca Njau".

THE SCAR, a one-act play, is considered the first play written by a Kenyan woman. It was published in book form in 1965 by Kibo Art Gallery in Marangu (after first appearing in a journal in 1963). THE SCAR premiered at the Uganda National Theatre in 1963 and went on to be performed in Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania and the USA. The play centres on the issue of female genital mutilation. The main character is Mariana, a former prostitute who tries to help girls escape female genital mutilation, which she regards as a "brutal custom". She advocates for alternative forms of initiation that can empower girls. Mariana is opposed by other women, who claim to be acting on behalf of the community's elders. The play ends with Mariana being shamed for having an illegitimate child and losing her status. In 1964, a second play by Njau, In the Round Chain, was performed before being banned by the Ugandan government.******

ROSENMAN (from Wikipedia): ******Samuel Irving Rosenman (b. 1896 d. 1973) was an American lawyer, judge, Democratic Party activist and presidential speechwriter. He coined the term NEW DEAL, and helped articulate liberal policies during the heyday of the New Deal coalition. He was the first person to hold the position of White House Counsel. Rosenman was a senior advisor to presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Under their administrations, he was a leading figure in the war crimes issue. He was also the first official White House Counsel, then called Special Counsel. He was a speechwriter under both presidents, helping Roosevelt with his speeches from his days as governor. Rosenman was responsible for the term "New Deal", a phrase in the conclusion of FDR's acceptance speech at the 1932 Democratic National Convention. While he was not heavily involved in speechwriting during Roosevelt's first term, he started traveling to Washington to help out with important talks during the 1936 campaign and was a key speech aide for the remainder of Roosevelt's life. He submitted his resignation as Special Counsel upon Roosevelt's death but Truman asked him to stay on, initially through V-E Day, then through V-J Day, and finally into 1946. Even after leaving the White House, he would periodically return to aid the president with major speeches, including his acceptance speech to the 1948 Democratic National Convention.****** About EDITH LEHMAN (to whom the book is inscribed): ******Edith Lehman (Edith Louise Lehman) was the wife of Herbert H. Lehman who was the first Jewish Governor of New York and later a Democratic Senator from New York. During his tenure as Senator, Herbert Lehman was one of the most liberal Senators in the Senate. As Governor, he and his wife Edith Lehman, were strong supporters of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Both Herbert and Edith Lehman were major philanthropists, sometimes assisting and accompanying Eleanor Roosevelt in her charity endeavors.****** (An amazing woman. There are lots of underlining, circling of text, and margin marks noting various passages, likely made by Curtis Imrie or Rick Schmidt in preparation for one film project or another. A filmmaker's actual working copy of a Brakhage filmmaking book. Nice.

Stan Brakhage is considered to be one of the most important figures in 20th century experimental film. Rick Schmidt is a prolific independent filmmaker and the author of the highly regarded book: "Feature Filmmaking at Used Car Prices". Curtis Imrie was an independent filmmaker, radio personality, and champion burro racer.

The inscription reads: "Rick / One good support book deserves another. B-4 FX2 @ Used Car $ [before Feature Filmmaking At Used Car Prices] there was only one Bible for unrepentant actor filmmakers. This one. Appropriately leather bound [actually leatherette I think]. Either return it sometime or walk the talk writing with an audio visual diamond where we diagram the human heart. I'll be a major color on your palette anytime but hey...face up to your talent. Do it. / as ever, C [initialed]"

It appears likely that Rick Schmidt sent Curtis Imrie a copy of his book "Feature Filmmaking At Used Car Prices", and Imrie reciprocated by sending Schmidt a copy of Brakhage's book. It is unclear to me who had Brakhage sign the book. Rick Schmidt was more in Brakhage's circle, they both were prolific independent filmmakers and went to many of the same film conferences, independent film events, etc.; but Curtis Imrie and Stan Brakhage both spent a lot of time living in Colorado.

What a journey through the hands of independent filmmakers - Stan Brakhage - Curtis Imrie - Rick Schmidt.

CONDITION: A couple small indents to the covers, lots of underlining, circling, and margin marks noting important passages (as detailed above), a pea size stain to the front margin of one page of text; otherwise tight, bright and clean, with signatures and inscriptions that are bright, clear and bold.

Kitamura produced a "series of books with people who firmly believe they have the energy to elevate the feeling of HYSTERIC." Hysteric Glamour"s early photography books laid the groundwork for the collaborative culture that came to define Harajuku in the 1990s.

Published by the Union of Artists of the USSR / Bowles Sorokko Galleries, Moscow / San Francisco, Printed in Torino, Italy by Stamperia Artistica Nazionale, 1989. First edition. Edited by Serge Sorokko. This was the first exhibition in the USSR of an artist exiled from the Soviet Union and banned by the authorities. Large format softcover, illustrated wrappers with French folds, 12.25" x 10", 158 pages of illustrations, most of them in color of Chemiakin's paintings, pastels, bronze sculptures, drawings, watercolors and a portrait of the artist. Text in Russian and English. Additionally inscribed to Tammy by Dr. Jean Audigier (beneath her essay), art history professor at the University of San Francisco where Chemiakin received an honorary doctorate, and the front/rear endpapers and some other pages are also inscribed to Tammy by people who seem to have been involved with this exhibition. VERY GOOD CONDITION: light shelfwear and a touch of sunning but overall the covers remain bright and the spine uncreased, internally, a touch of age toning to the margins otherwise tight, bright, and clean. A respectable copy of this affectionally signed vintage exhibition catalogue by an important radical artist.

Mihail Mikhailovich Chemiakin (American, b. Russia 1943) painter, graphic artist, stage designer, sculptor, and publisher now residing in France. A victim of persistent political persecution, he was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1971, resettled in France and later in New York in 1981. In 1989 Mikhail Gorbachev invited him back to Russia for a retrospective exhibition ending seventy years of isolation behind the Iron Curtain. Chemiakin is one of the most important and controversial figures in contemporary Russian art. A visionary Soviet dissident avant-garde artist who was expelled from art school for failing to conform to Socialist Realist norms, imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital along with other ideological dissidents, then persecuted and ordered into exile by the Soviet KGB. He is a leading non-conformist and surrealist, a radical painter best known for his mystical, supernatural, exotic, grotesque, fanciful, brilliantly colored compositions and iconography.

About THE ASHENDENE PRESS (from Wikipedia):

******The Ashendene Press was a small private press founded by St John Hornby, b.1867 d.1946. It operated from 1895 to 1915 in Chelsea, London and was revived after the war in 1920. The press closed in 1935. Its peers included the Kelmscott Press and the Doves Press. These three presses were part of a "revival of fine printing" that focused on treating bookmaking as fine art. The Ashendene Press was famous for producing high quality works by Dante. Ashendene books were carefully printed with large margins, and despite their lack of extravagant decoration, they were considered spectacular works of art. Two original typefaces were created for the Ashendene Press: Subiaco and Ptolemy. The Press was also known for handwritten, colored initials by Graily Hewitt. The Press' main customers were fine book collectors.******

About CHARLES WENDELL (from a UC Santa Barbara website):

******Charles Wendell, b.1919 d. 1982, Professor of Eastern Languages; Germa nic and Slavic Languages; Religious Studies; Eastern Languages: University of California Santa Barbara.

Charles Wendell was a brilliant linguist, fluent in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Turkish, Latin, and Greek. In 1967 Wendell joined the faculty at Santa Barbara as an Assistant Professor of Arabic. He was later advanced to Associate Professor with a joint appointment with the Eastern Languages Department, where he continued to teach Arabic, and with the Religious Studies Department, where he offered courses in Islamic religion.

A meticulous scholar, Wendell, whose articles were erudite and enlightening, contributed to several important books on Middle Eastern culture and civilization. But his interests were quite broad, ranging from the history of early Islam to intellectual developments in modern Egypt. Early in his scholarly career Wendell's translation of Muhammad Abduh by Osman Amin was published by the American Council of Learned Societies. Later books included The Evolution of the Egyptian National Image: from its Origins to Ahmad Lutfi al-Sayyid and Five Tracts of Hasán al-Banná (both by UC Press). At his death Professor Wendell was engaged in a long range, two volume project on the 8th century Arabic classic The Book of Kalilah and Dimnah. Planned and begun were a new translation of the work and a full volume to "deal as exhaustively as possible with the biography of the author and his historical and cultural ambience." Such thoroughness was typical of Wendell's scholarship.******
