    About JESS (from Wikipedia):

******Jess Collins, b.1923 d.2004, known today simply as Jess, was an American visual artist.

He met Robert Duncan in 1950 and began a relationship with the poet that lasted for 37 years until Duncan's death in 1988. The two men lived and worked for decades from their historic Victorian home in the Mission District, "a wonderland of an old house, filled to the roof with art".

Jess's art received international attention with solo exhibitions at the The Museum of Modern Art in New York (1974), the Galleria Odyssia in Rome (1975), the Wadsworth Atheneum[11] (1975), the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts (1977), the Berkeley Art Museum (1980), and The Arts Club of Chicago (1981).

In 2019, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art mounted the show "Mythos, Psyche, Eros: Jess and California", which paired paintings and collages: "that privileged the mystical, whimsical, and absurd" by "one of San Francisco's most enigmatic figures..."

The bitter, anti-woman inscription by Thornton Wilder makes this book special.

ALESSANDRA SCALERO was an important FEMALE ITALIAN TRANSLATOR who translated many important works, including Virginia Woolf's Orlando, and was considered a feminist scholar who, amazingly was able to capture the essence of subversive novels, including Orlando, in Italy during the repressive 1930's and 1940's. You can read about her online. Here are a couple Internet tidbits:

"Translating Orlando in 1930s Fascist Italy: Virginia Woolf, translated by Alessandra Scalero // The first full translation of Orlando in Italian was published on 1 October 1933 by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. What made the Italian translation of Orlando such a literary and economic success was not only the brilliance of the novel but also, as I shall show, the lexical expertise and brilliance of its translator, Alessandra Scalero. In her translation Scalero was able to remain true to the spirit and the style of a subversive novel and what is more remarkable, she accomplished this feat in a climate of repressive censorship."

"Alessandra Scalero worked as a literary translator from English, German, and French for the publishing houses Mondadori and Il Corbaccio, from the late 1920s to the early 1940s. She translated novels by many prominent authors including Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, John Dos Passos and Daphne Du Maurier and often translated works for Mondadori's Medusa series. Scalero translated Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop into Italian in 1936, and Cather wrote she was impressed with the quality of the work."

NEAR FINE condition, a bright and beautiful copy. Would look great mounted and/or framed.

From the Broadside: "Within a very few years of the publication of my Collected Poems (1938)... I renounced further trying the way of poetry... saying: I would write no more poems - and I wrote no more poems... (however) I wrote for (a close friend), in the 1978 Christmastime, a poem, marked as a poem for him only, giving it the title HOW A POEM CAME TO BE. I kept no copy of this privately written and given poem, and forgot the writing and the giving of it... I chanced, recently, to tell my friend of receiving a request for a poem to publish in broadside form from the Lord John Press, indicating my feeling some surprise that Mr. Yellin, the Press's director, should not have been aware that FOR FORTY YEARS there had been NO NEW POEMS of mine. But my friend reminded me that about a year ago there HAD been a new poem - the one I wrote for him; and he urged me to let him release it to me from its private status of being a poem for him only... I give here the poem, given him, to be out in the world..."

LAURA RIDING JACKSON, 1901-1991, was an iconoclastic American Poet. She left New England at the age of 25 to live with ROBERT GRAVES and his wife, Nancy Nicholson. The triangle did not suit her, and Laura Riding tried to commit suicide in 1927. Thereafter Robert Graves divorced his wife and lived together with Laura Riding in Majorca, France, England and Switzerland, and even went with her when she returned to the United States. They bitterly broke up in 1939. In 1941 Laura Riding Jackson renounced poetry, married Schuyler B. Jackson, and lived quietly with him in Wabasso, Florida, until her death in 1991. In the 60s, 70s and 80s she wrote a number of pieces explaining her reasons for renouncing poetry, but no poetry. This is apparently THE ONLY POEM written by Laura Riding Jackson since 1941.

You can read much more about LAURA RIDING on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet.

About the ARNOLD AND GREEN / GREENE FAMILIES of RHODE ISLAND (extracts from various Internet sources):

The Arnold and Greene families are two prominent families deeply intertwined with the history of Rhode Island. The Arnold family, particularly the lineage of William Arnold and his son Governor Benedict Arnold, were early settlers and influential figures in the colony's development. The Greene family, also among the earliest settlers, played a significant role in shaping Rhode Island's political and social landscape. Their histories are closely connected through intermarriages and shared influence in the colony and state.

The Arnold and Greene families were among the earliest settlers in Rhode Island, contributing significantly to the colony's establishment and development.

Intermarriage between the two families, like the marriage of Patience Greene and Welcome Arnold, further solidified their connections and influence.

Both families produced prominent figures who served in various capacities, including governors, senators, and military leaders, shaping the state's history.

The Arnold and Greene families are remembered for their immense contributions to Rhode Island's political, social, and economic landscape.

    About WELCOME ARNOLD (from Wikipedia):

******Welcome Arnold, b.1745 d.1798, was a Colonial American politician and merchant. He was a descendant of William Arnold, one of the founding settlers of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Arnold, a member of the Sons of Liberty, was involved in the planning of the 1772 burning of the HMS Gaspee in Narragansett Bay, which later became known as the Gaspee affair. Occurring three years before the Boston Tea Party, it is considered the first act of civil disobedience against the Crown. A prominent merchant in the New England-Caribbean trade, Arnold was also a leader in the fight to end Rhode Island's involvement in the African slave trade. He served as a trustee of Brown University.

Welcome Arnold was one of twelve children born to Jonathan Arnold and Abigail (née Smith) Arnold. His sister, Elizabeth Arnold, married Samuel Arnold (son of Joseph Arnold), and another sister, Abigail Arnold, married Nathaniel Greene (son of Caleb Greene). SCARCE book, especially so with the Signature and Inscription of the author and forensic witness Francis Camps, and the association to criminologist John E. Murdock.

About FRANCIS CAMPS and the CHRISTIE MURDER CASE (from Wikipedia):

******Francis Edward Camps, b.1905 d.1972, was an English pathologist noted for his work on the cases of serial killers John Christie and John Bodkin Adams. He was professor of Forensic Medicine at the London Hospital Medical College, and President of the International Association of Forensic Scientists. He was the author of many papers on forensic medicine.

Camps gave critical evidence during the 1953 trial of John Christie, providing the court with a detailed report on the bodies found at 10 Rillington Place. Camps' report showed a consistent pattern of attack by Christie. His forensic evidence left little doubt that Christie murdered the victims and that Timothy Evans, who had been convicted and hanged for two of the murders, was innocent.

The Christie case was the most prominent of a series of miscarriages of justice which ultimately led to the abolition of capital punishment for murder in England, Wales and Scotland in 1965.******

About JOHN E. MURDOCK (from an online obituary):

******John E. Murdock, b.1938 d.2025, was Chief of the Contra Costa County Forensic Services Division (crime laboratory) for many years. He was an expert firearm and toolmark examiner. Though Murdock worked on many high profile criminal cases, he was most proud of his work on two cases for the Innocence Project, where his expertise helped secure the release of Patrick Pursley (who had spent 25 years in prison) and Bryan Foshay (who had spent 9 years in prison) following their wrongful convictions for murder based on misleading forensic evidence. The Pursley case was the first in the United States to allow post conviction firearms testing.******

About JOHN CHRISTIE - Serial Killer (from Wikipedia):

******John Reginald Halliday Christie, b1899 d.1953, was an English serial killer who murdered at least eight people - including his wife Ethel - by strangling them inside his flat at 10 Rillington Place, Notting Hill, London. The bodies of three of his victims were found in a wallpaper covered kitchen alcove soon after he had moved out of Rillington Place during March 1953. The remains of two more victims were discovered in the garden, and his wife's body was found beneath the floorboards in the front room. Christie was eventually arrested and convicted of murder, for which he was hanged.

Two of Christie's victims were Beryl Evans and her baby daughter Geraldine. In 1950 Timothy Evans was charged with those murders, found guilty and hanged. Christie was a key prosecution witness in the Evans trial. When his own crimes were discovered three years later, it became evident that Christie's murders included Beryl Evans and her daughter, and that the police mishandling of the original inquiry allowed an innocent man to be hanged and Christie to escape detection, enabling him to commit a further four murders.******

Overall a solid, complete, very presentable copy.

ALFREDO BRUNO was MARIA MONTESSORI'S lawyer and advisor during the years that PEDAGOGIA SCIENTIFICA first appeared and the "Montessori Method" was taking off internationally. As such he was greatly responsible for the early diffusion of Maria Montessori's work. As Montessori states in her inscription to Bruno she entrusted him with "the entirety of this work".

Below are a few of the references to Maria Montessori and Alfredo Bruno found on the Internet (these from the Lilly Library; "America's Early Montessorians" by Gerald and Patricia Gutek; and an Italian Doctoral Thesis from the Università di Bologna):

******From 1911 on, requests for translations came to Montessori from all over the world. The lawyer ALFREDO BRUNO handled all correspondence, and all issues related to finance - contracts, copyright, royalty payments, etc. In the collection held in the archives of the Association Montessori Internationale in Amsterdam, are collected the letters SENT TO HIM between 1912 and 1914 from every part of the globe. The documents show on the one hand the international interest in the Montessori experiment, on the other the criteria Bruno and Montessori used in deciding to whom to entrust her work.*****

******She refused to sign the Montessori Company contract and her lawyer, ALFREDO BRUNO, told S. S. McClure that the proposed Montessori Company was dead: "Dr. Montessori has examined the contract plan prepared by you...relative to...the Montessori Company of America recently established, but she will not in any way feel obligated in such a broad and open-ended way."******

******On May 24, the lawyer Alfredo Bruno, Maria Montessori's lawyer for all matters related to the publications of the texts and the sale of the material, wrote to Heinemann: Dear sir, Doctor Montessori told me about your proposals which reached her via a letter sent to Mrs. Tasker. May I, as Montessori's advisor, request that all communications be sent to ME or to Dr. Montessori personally?******

About CARTER G. WOODSON (from Wikipedia):

******Carter Godwin Woodson, b.1875 d.1950, was an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora, including African-American history. A founder of The Journal of Negro History in 1916, Woodson has been called the FATHER OF BLACK HISTORY. In February 1926 he launched the celebration of Negro History Week, now known as the Black History Month.

In 1911 he began teaching at M Street (Dunbar) High School - An Elite Black

school. One of his colleagues was the mathematics teacher, Mary E. Cromwell. In 1912 Woodson was the second African American, after W. E. B. Du Bois, to obtain a PhD degree from Harvard University. But he continued for years teaching at M STREET HIGH SCHOOL until, in 1919, he joined the Howard University faculty.

Woodson worked to preserve the history of African Americans. He noted that African-American contributions were overlooked, ignored, and even suppressed by the writers of history.******

Read much more about Carter G. Woodson on his Wikipedia Page, in the article: THE BURGEONING 'CAUSE,' 1920-1930 AN ESSAY ON CARTER G. WOODSON (found when searched under that title), and elsewhere on the Internet.
