All the items are in generally GOOD condition, folds from mailing, signs of handling, overall solid and bright.
About Czech PF Pour Feliciter greetings (from a knowledgeable Bohemian on the Internet):
******The Czech letters P-F ,"pé-efka", do not stand for Czech words but actually two French words "pour féliciter", which means to congratulate. It is a way of wishing luck in the New Year. In the Czech Republic PF greeting cards are often sent out a month before Christmas as part of a joint holiday (Christmas and New Year) greeting. The PF greeting is almost exclusively Czech; not even the French use it. The origin of this phrase in the Czech language is actually a total mystery and often disputed. One theory says that it was first used centuries ago when Czech noblemen spoke French as part of their "higher education". While French did not survive, the greeting did. One really big problem is that if Czechs use this greeting internationally, especially for business, nobody has a clue what it means.******
About MARVIN LIPOFSKY (from Wikipedia):
******Marvin Bentley Lipofsky, b.1938 d.2016, was an American glass artist. He was a central figure in the dissemination of the American Studio Glass Movement, introducing it to California through his tenure as an instructor at the University of California, Berkeley and the California College of Arts and Crafts. Lipofsky was one of the first American glass artists to travel to Czechoslovakia [now the Czech Republic], where a studio glass movement had arisen in the 1950s. This would be the first of many trips. He became well known and collaborated with numerous artists. Lipofsky's work has been collected by many public museums and institutions worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.******

******Ralph Heatchote, b.1721 d.1765. In 1748 Heathcote became curate of St Margaret's Church, Leicester, and vicar of Barkby in 1749. He moved in June 1753 to London, where he associated with John Jortin, Thomas Birch, Matthew Maty, and others, who met once a week to drink coffee and talk learnedly.
In 1746 Heathcote published a Latin dissertation on the history of astronomy, Historia Astronomiæ sive de ortu et progressu astronomiæ. He produced two pamphlets anonymously: Cursory Animadversions on the Controversy in General (1752), and Remarks upon a Charge by Dr. Chapman (1752); and in the following year wrote a reply to Thomas Fothergill's sermon on the uses of commemorating King Charles I's martyrdom. In 1755 he wrote a controversial work: A Sketch of Lord Bolingbroke's Philosophy. In 1761, he became one of the main writers in the Biographical Dictionary of 1761.
In 1767, Heathcote published an anonymous letter to Horace Walpole on the dispute between David Hume and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, which was attributed to Walpole himself. In 1771, he published anonymously The Irenarch, or Justice of the Peace's Manual; the third edition bore the author's name. The second and third editions have a long dedication to Lord Mansfield. In 1786, he produced a miscellany of anecdotes and dissertations, Sylva.
In August 1750 Heathcote married Margaret Mompesson, a descendant of William Mompesson of Eyam, and attained financial independence.******

The original front and rear paper covered boards are soiled, have some shorelining, creases, chips and tears to the paper covering, and are worn through along the edges and corners; but have a nice and sturdy Hogwarts' Library feel and look. Internally, there is foxing throughout; the pages are toned with age; and there are some tears, edge chips, edge wear, etc. here and there; otherwise the pages are clean and clear, and the printing is legible throughout. A complete, solid, presentable copy.
A RARE and IMPORTANT piece of AMERICANA.
About Thomas Cooper (from Wikipedia):
******Thomas Cooper, b.1759 d.1839, was an Anglo-American economist, college president and political philosopher. Cooper was described by Thomas Jefferson as "one of the ablest men in America" and by John Adams as "a learned ingenious scientific and talented madcap." Dumas Malone stated that "modern scientific progress would have been impossible without the freedom of the mind which he championed throughout life." His ideas were taken very seriously.
In addition to Thomas Jefferson, he was friends with James Madison and several Governors of South Carolina. As a philosopher he was a follower of David Hartley, Erasmus Darwin, Priestley, and François-Joseph-Victor Broussais; he was a physiological materialist, and a severe critic of Scottish metaphysics.
Later in life, Cooper became an ardent and outspoken defender of slavery, and personally owned several slaves.******

GOOD MINUS condition, the covers are lightly toned, have some corner and edge creases, there is a chip to the top edge, and the front spine fold is separating for 3 inches; internally, the pages are toned, especially at the margins, and the binding is a bit shaky but holding. Overall a complete copy, made special with the bitter inscription by Thornton Wilder.
ALESSANDRA SCALERO was an important FEMALE ITALIAN TRANSLATOR who translated many important works, including Virginia Woolf's Orlando, and was considered a feminist scholar who, amazingly was able to capture the essence of subversive novels, including Orlando, in Italy during the repressive 1930's and 1940's. You can read about her online. Here are a couple tidbits:
"Translating Orlando in 1930s Fascist Italy: Virginia Woolf, Arnoldo Mondadori, and Alessandra Scalero // The first full translation of Orlando in Italian was published on 1 October 1933 by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. What made the Italian translation of Orlando such a literary and economic success was not only the brilliance of the novel but also, as I shall show, the lexical expertise of its translator, Alessandra Scalero. In her translation Scalero was able to remain true to the spirit and the style of a subversive novel and what is more remarkable, she accomplished this feat in a climate of repressive censorship."
"Alessandra Scalero worked as a literary translator from English, German, and French for the publishing houses Mondadori and Il Corbaccio, from the late 1920s to the early 1940s. She translated novels by many prominent authors including Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, John Dos Passos and Daphne Du Mauier and often translated works for Mondadori's Medusa series. Scalero translated Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop into Italian in 1936, and Cather was impressed with the quality of the work."

GOOD Condition, the covers have some darkening to the spine and margins, the spine was professionally restored, overall the covers are solid, with bright gilt, and quite attractive. Internally, the front inner hinge has been professionally reinforced, the text pages are toned/browned as normal, there is foxing to the first and last few pages of the text, the first plate has some foxing at the top (a result of facing the foxed blank verso of the last page of text), otherwise the plates, which were printed on good quality paper, are bright, clean and clear. Overall a solid, complete, very presentable copy.
ALFREDO BRUNO was MARIA MONTESSORI'S lawyer and advisor during the years that PEDAGOGIA SCIENTIFICA first appeared and the "Montessori Method" was taking off internationally. As such he was greatly responsible for the early diffusion of Maria Montessori's work. As Montessori states in her inscription to Bruno she entrusted him with "the entirety of this work".
Below are a few of the references to Maria Montessori and Alfredo Bruno found on the Internet (these from the Lilly Library; "America's Early Montessorians" by Gerald and Patricia Gutek; and an Italian Doctoral Thesis from the Università di Bologna):
******From 1911 on, requests for translations came to Montessori from all over the world. The lawyer ALFREDO BRUNO handled all correspondence, and all issues related to finance - contracts, copyright, royalty payments, etc. In the collection held in the archives of the Association Montessori Internationale in Amsterdam, are collected the letters SENT TO HIM between 1912 and 1914 from every part of the globe. The documents show on the one hand the international interest in the Montessori experiment, on the other the criteria Bruno and Montessori used in deciding to whom to entrust her work.*****
******She refused to sign the Montessori Company contract and her lawyer, ALFREDO BRUNO, told S. S. McClure that the proposed Montessori Company was dead: "Dr. Montessori has examined the contract plan prepared by you...relative to...the Montessori Company of America recently established, but she will not in any way feel obligated in such a broad and open-ended way."******
******On May 24, the lawyer Alfredo Bruno, Maria Montessori's lawyer for all matters related to the publications of the texts and the sale of the material, wrote to Heinemann: Dear sir, Doctor Montessori told me about your proposals which reached her via a letter sent to Mrs. Tasker. May I, as Montessori's advisor, request that all communications be sent to ME or to Dr. Montessori personally?******

About ANTONIO BOTTO (from Wikipedia):
******António Botto, b.1897 d.1959, was a Portuguese aesthete and lyricist poet. Botto grew up in a neighbourhood of old shabby houses, the ambiance was one of poverty and promiscuousness. The dirty streets were crowded with workers, housewives shopping, vendors, beggars, tramps, kids playing, pimps, prostitutes and sailors. All of this deeply influenced Botto's work.
His first book of poems Trovas was published in 1917. It was followed by Cantigas de Saudade (1918), Cantares (1919) and Canções do Sul (1920). His book Canções (1921) caused a scandal and gave Botto a notoriety that has lasted until this day. In Canções Botto wrote about same-sex love in a very nonchalant and romantic way; and it featured a photograph of Botto in a languid, partially nude pose.
The journal Comtemporânea praised the author's courage and sincerity for shamelessly singing about homosexual love as a true aesthete. Conservatives branded the book "Sodom's literature" and had it banned. A year later the ban was lifted and Botto became somewhat of a mythical figure.
Botto's mythomania seems to have been a lifelong trait. He talked about unlikely friendships with people like James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Vaslav Nijinsky, Federico García Lorca or André Gide. On the other hand, he never alluded to his modest background or ever talked about his parents or brothers.
He was a regular visitor of Lisbon's popular bohemian quarters and the docks, enjoying the company of sailors, a frequent image in his poems. In spite of a homosexual fame, he had a lifelong and fully devoted common law wife, Carminda da Conceição Silva Rodrigues, a widow, nine years his elder. "Marriage suits every handsome and decadent man", he once wrote.****** (Read more about Botto on his Wikipedia page and elsewhere on the Internet.)

He was at the beginning of developments that helped change and shape the world. In 1944 Tizard won the Royal Society of Arts' Albert Medal for work in aeronautics and services to advanced Technical Education. He joined a glittering roll-call of winners, including Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Sir Frank Whittle, Christopher Cockerell, Barnes Wallis, Stephen Hawking and Tim Berners-Lee.

From the Broadside: "Within a very few years of the publication of my Collected Poems (1938)... I renounced further trying the way of poetry... saying: I would write no more poems - and I wrote no more poems... (however) I wrote for (a close friend), in the 1978 Christmastime, a poem, marked as a poem for him only, giving it the title HOW A POEM CAME TO BE. I kept no copy of this privately written and given poem, and forgot the writing and the giving of it... I chanced, recently, to tell my friend of receiving a request for a poem to publish in broadside form from the Lord John Press, indicating my feeling some surprise that Mr. Yellin, the Press's director, should not have been aware that FOR FORTY YEARS there had been NO NEW POEMS of mine. But my friend reminded me that about a year ago there HAD been a new poem - the one I wrote for him; and he urged me to let him release it to me from its private status of being a poem for him only... I give here the poem, given him, to be out in the world..."
LAURA RIDING JACKSON, 1901-1991, was an iconoclastic American Poet. She left New England at the age of 25 to live with ROBERT GRAVES and his wife, Nancy Nicholson. The triangle did not suit her, and Laura Riding tried to commit suicide in 1927. Thereafter Robert Graves divorced his wife and lived together with Laura Riding in Majorca, France, England and Switzerland, and even went with her when she returned to the United States. They bitterly broke up in 1939. In 1941 Laura Riding Jackson renounced poetry, married Schuyler B. Jackson, and lived quietly with him in Wabasso, Florida, until her death in 1991. In the 60s, 70s and 80s she wrote a number of pieces explaining her reasons for renouncing poetry, but no poetry. This is apparently THE ONLY POEM written by Laura Riding Jackson since 1941.

Though the book can be found with an unsigned "Compliments of the Author" inscription, the actual SIGNATURE, INSCRIPTION and PRESENTATION by Civil War CAPTAIN ALANSON H. NELSON makes this book quite exceptional.
About CAPT. ALANSON H. NELSON (from the Find A Grave website):
******Alanson H. Nelson, b.1828 d.1921. His father, William Nelson, enlisted in the Regular Army and was killed in the Seminole war. On August 1, 1861, A.H. Nelson enlisted in the Fifty-Seventh Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, leaving his wife and seven small children. He and Capt. Chase organized Company K to the number of thirty men and he was made a First Lieutenant. When the Company arrived in Harrisburg, Penn., A.H. Nelson was ordered make up the remainder of the Company, which he did, enlisting fifty-five more men. The company was assigned to the Army of the Potomac. At the death of Capt. Chase on June 17, 1862, A.H. Nelson was promoted to Commander. He led his Company through seventeen hard fought and historic battles of the Virginia campaigns. In the absence of the field officers Capt. Nelson, being the senior Captain, took command of the regiment for a period of eighteen months. He received his discharge in November, 1864.******

About JANE GRAVEROL (from Wikipedia):
******Jane Graverol, b.1905 d.1984, was a Belgian surrealist painter. She started painting between 1920 and 1930, before the rise of surrealism and before she adapted the surrealist style she is known for today. She began to exhibit her work in 1927.
Graverol was closely linked to the development of surrealism in Belgium. She would considered her canvases to be "waking, conscious dreams". Her encounters after the war with René Magritte, Louis Scutenaire, Paul Nougé, and then Marcel Mariën, with whom she collaborated on the periodical "Les Lèvres Nues", reconfirmed her belief in surrealism. Her painting La Goutte d'Eau is a collective portrait of the Belgian surrealists. Her paintings offered an original, dreamy version of feminine sensibility, painted with a figurative technique that was both precise and cold.******

You can read all about the amazing French bibliophile, writer and publisher OCTAVE UZANNE on his wikipedia page and many other places on the Internet.
Here is some information about the lesser known Minnesota bibliophile JAMES CARLETON YOUNG (from the Hennepin County Library website):
******James Carleton Young, b.1856 d.1918, was an internationally known Midwest American
book collector. He graduated with an M.A. from Cornell College in 1876, and in 1909 Cornell presented him with its first-ever Doctor of Literature degree. He became wealthy buying and selling mid-west real estate, and used almost all of it to acquire first edition books.
Young collected first editions of both contemporary and non-contemporary authors, often sending the contemporary books to their authors with a request that they inscribe them. In Europe Young was given the title "Le Roi des Livres". Young was named honorary commissioner to the Paris exposition of 1878, elected as one of the three foreign members to the Société Des Amis Des Livres in Paris, awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1910, made a Fellow to the Royal Geographical Society of London, and received awards from many other important European and American book clubs and societies. The books in his library ultimately numbered in the tens of thousands and required the services of a full-time librarian, bookkeeper, several assistants, catalogers, translators, and agents.
Mounting obstacles to his dream of keeping the collection together and eventually donating it to the Smithsonian forced him to allow it to be auctioned off in installments by the Anderson galleries in New York in 1916. Young took consolation that his books would "pass into the possession of my fellow collectors and enrich hundreds of public and private libraries." He ended up being much better known abroad than in America, and relatively unknown in Minneapolis.******
