    Amsden & Clark

1891 Photo Album with 26 Original Albumen Photographs Depicting Two Significant Mountaineering Expeditions Summiting both Mount Rainier in 1890 and Mount Baker in 1891, and Early Images of the Cascade Mining District circa 1890. The pioneering photographers were William Oscar Amsden (1862-1942) and Hobart Clark of Seattle. These photographs are of historical importance for a number of reasons: the Mount Baker Series were the first photographs taken at the top of the summit; The Mount Rainier Series was crucial in marshaling support for establishing Mount Rainier as a National Park (this expedition included Fay Fuller who was the first woman to summit Mount Rainier); the Cascade Mining Series depict one of the oldest mining districts in Northern Washington, discovered by…

These photographs are of historical importance for a number of reasons: the Mount Baker Series were the first photographs taken at the top of the summit; The Mount Rainier Series was crucial in marshaling support for establishing Mount Rainier as a National Park (this expedition included Fay Fuller who was the first woman to summit Mount Rainier); the Cascade Mining Series depict one of the oldest mining districts in Northern Washington, discovered by the Rouse brothers who made the first major discovery of ores on the edge of Doubtful Lake.

Photograph Album. Oblong, textured brown cloth covered boards, 12.75" x 10", lace bound, embossed gilt printing on the cover, 26 board leaves, the photographs range from 9" x 7" to 9.75" x 7.5", mounted on 11.5" x 9.75 cream board, 25 of the photographs are mounted on one leaf, one is mounted on a verso. Captions at the bottom in the negative. GOOD CONDITION: wear/staining to the covers, spine covering tearing at the margins but still holding, gilt remains bright, internally, waviness, light shorelining and light foxing to the boards. The photographs are mostly clean, clear and legible, some toning, fading, a few small stains/abrasions. Scarce.

MOUNT RAINIER SERIES: Photographs documenting the glaciers, summit, and natural scenery of the 1890 Mt. Rainier summit bound expedition led by Reverend Ernest C. Smith. The party included Fay Fuller, Leonard Longmire, William O. Amsden, and Robert R. Parrish. Fay Fuller was the first woman to ascend Mount Rainier. Amsden had a heavy 8x10 camera. Shortly after the climb Amsden produced his series of Mount Rainier photographs. Expedition leader Smith wrote of the series "Amsden's photographs have a historic interest. Without them there would have been no illustrated lecture in Washington at the crucial time for the proposed park."

this underscores how the Mount Rainier National Park idea was rooted in the physical and aesthetic experience of climbing the mountain. The arguments that were marshaled in support of Mount Rainier National Park during the 1890s helped shape the national park idea at a crucial time.

CASCADE MINING DISTRICT SERIES: Photographs document the mines, miners, and natural scenery of the mining district. The Cascade Mining District is one of the oldest mining districts in northern Western Washington, dating its formal organization to September, 1889. Prospectors George Rouse and John Rouse, traveling from the west over Cascade Pass made the first major discovery when they located ores on the edge of Doubtful Lake.

MOUNT BAKER SERIES: Photographs document the ascent of Mt. Baker led by Valentine V. Lowe in June-July 1891. Photos include: men with alpenstocks amongst trees; men waving flag and hats on summit. The expedition party included photographer William O. Amsden, Henry Lowe, Ed. Whitstruck, Percival J. Parris, G. W. Smith, Tom Scatbo, and photographer Hobert Clark. These photographs are the first ever made with a camera on the top of Mt. Baker.

Copy of HENRY N. CASTLE, with his SIGNATURE on the title-page. Henry N. Castle was an important figure in the overthrow of Queen Lilinokalani and the formation of the New Republic of Hawaii. He was owner of The Honolulu Advertiser, the oldest and most influential paper in Hawaii. HIS BROTHER WILLIAM R. CASTLE was a WRITER and SIGNER of the 1893 DRAFT ANNEXATION TREATY. He is referenced in a number of places in this book

In 1895 while returning to Hawaii to support the Islands' revolutionaries he and his four year-old daughter were on the ship Elbe which crashed and sank. They both drowned. His wife and infant daughter, Elinor, were not on the ship.

Subsequent to the death of Henry N. Castle, his wife, MABEL WING CASTLE, SIGNED and INSCRIBED this book to his daughter, ELINOR CASTLE NEF. The book is inscribed on the front free-endpaper: "To Elinor Castle Nef / Henry Castle's daughter / M.W.C. [Mabel Wing Castle]".

Subsequent to that the book was donated to the University of Chicago by Elinor Castle Nef and her husband John U. Nef. There is a University of Chicago bookplate on the front pastedown with the following printed information: "FROM the LIBRARY of / ELINOR CASTLE NEF / and / JOHN U. NEF".

Also, on the verso of the title page, is the printed statement: "Gift of / John U. Nef".

Hardcover book, leather spine and corners with marbled paper covered boards, 6x9 inches, 69 and 192 pages. There is a bookbinder's label at the bottom the front pastedown: " Haw'n Gazette Co. / Publishers, Printers and Binders / Honolulu, H.I."

Contains two important Senate reports from the 52nd Congress, 2nd Session, relating to the Annexation of Hawaii.

The first report is subtitled: "A treaty of annexation concluded on the 14th day of February 1893, between the United States and the Provisional Government of the Hawaiian Islands". Dated February 15, 1893. 69 pages.

The report begins: "To the Senate / I transmit, herewith, with a view to its ratification, a treaty of annexation concluded on the 14th day of February, 1893, between Hon. John W. Foster, Secretary of State...and Lorrin A. Thurston, W. R. CASTLE, W. C. Wilder, C. L. Carter, and Joseph Marsden, the commissioners on part of the Provisional Government of the Hawaiian Islands." The introductory remarks are followed by the FULL DRAFT ANNEXATION TREATY.

The second report is subtitled: "Correspondence respecting relations between the United States and the Hawaiian Islands from September, 1820 to January, 1893". Dated February 17, 1893. 192 pages.

Condition: The covers are well-worn, the front and rear boards are disbound (i.e. laid on loosely), worn through at the corners and edges, scraped, and the leather is chipping and peeling at places; the spine covering is chipped at the ends, scraped, and has a horizontal split; nonetheless the covers and spine covering are present and bright, and certainly worthy of rebacking / repair. EX-LIBRARY, deaccessioned from the University of Chicago Library (which holds the archives of Henry N. Castle), with a library bookplate on the front pastedown (as noted above) and a library stamp on the verso of the title page, both over-stamped WITHDRAWN; the front free endpaper (with the presentation inscription from Mrs. Castle to Elinor Castle Nef) is split for 3 inches at its gutter edge and is very tender but holding; the second report has margin marks and a bit of underlining here and there throughout noting passages, perhaps made by Henry N. Castle; the pages are lightly age toned, there is some edge wear here and there, overall the inner pages remain bright, clean, clear and fully legible. A complete copy deserving of rebinding.

This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, with a Sutro Library bookplate tipped into the front enpapers, and some related library labels and marks here and there. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books originally collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until, in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home at SFSU the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it's just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time.

FAIR CONDITION: The covers are rubbed, scraped, and worn through at the edges and corners; the spine gilt lettering has substantially faded but is still legible upon close examination; nonetheless these original covers are still doing their job. Internally, the rear inner hinge has split but is holding; there are some creases, edge chips, and small spots here and there, otherwise the pages remain bright, clean, and clear.

A Complete, Original 1894 HOUSE DIRECTORY of RESIDENTS and VALUATION of PROPERTIES of WORCESTER.

About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned):

******The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S.

Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.******

Three Page Handwritten Draft Letter by a Politically Progressive Texas Man re: Reforming the Texas Republican Party: "I am one of the progressives who is in favor of co-operation with you in trying to restore the Republican Party to its former prestige and usefulness..." The draft letter is written by W. E. Singleton (Captain WILLIAM E. SINGLETON) of Jefferson, Texas, and addressed to "Hon. C. A. Lyon" (Honorable CECIL ANDREW LYON). The draft letter is dated "Jefferson Texas / Feb (17th and 18th), 1916". It is interesting to note that Cecil A. Lyon died two months after this draft was written, and William E. Singleton died within a year after this draft was written. Both deaths marking the end of "Progressive Republicans" in Texas. This draft letter is handwritten, it is the same text written out twice, once in pencil and once in ink, as if in practice for a finished letter that would (presumably) be sent. Three pages written on one side only of three sheets of watermarked laid-paper 5x8". The text is as follows: "I am in receipt of your circular letter of date February 4th (?) and will say: I am one of the progressives who is in favor of co-operation with you in trying to restore the Republican Party to its former prestige and usefulness. I am very much in favor of a conference of the leading Republicans and Progressives to try and adjust their differences and will be glad to meet with you and assist in any capacity in bringing about harmony and party discipline. I am very sincerely yours, W.E. Singleton". POOR condition, thumbprint size chip on the right side of the sheets, lesser chipping at the bottom right corner, all sheets have two horizontal folds from where they were folded to fit into an envelope, one sheet has insect holes all along its upper fold, almost splitting the sheet into two parts, another sheet has some insect holes across its top fold, the chip and holes affect some text, all sheets have some toning and foxing; NONETHELESS, the writing is clear and the text legible. An interesting historic letter regarding PROGRESSIVE REPUBLICANS in TEXAS in the early 20th century. About the PROGRESSIVE REPUBLICAN ERA (from Wikipedia): ******During the 1910s and 1920s, progressives formed a faction in the Republican Party. They typically held center-left views on most issues, supporting broad government involvement in business, particularly breaking 'trusts' and limiting the size of corporations, reforms in government, income taxes, universal health care, and other forms of 'social justice'. This faction gradually shrank, with many joining the Democratic Party as it shifted to the left. Prominent progressive Republicans included Theodore Roosevelt, Hiram Johnson, and Robert La Follette.****** About CECIL ANDREW LYON (from the Texas State Historical Association website): ******On the heels of the Republican convention, when Roosevelt bolted the party to run as the candidate of the National Progressive Republican League, Lyon led the state Progressive convention, which met at Dallas. He served as this party's state chairman and as a national committeeman from 1912 until his death. After Democrat Woodrow Wilson's victory Lyon worked to unify the Republican party in the state. He called for a meeting of reunification that convened in Dallas in March 1915 and served as the first step in healing political wounds. Lyon, however, played only a small role in that reunification, for he died on April 4, 1916. At the time of his death, in addition to his political activities, he was president of the Lyon-Gray Lumber Company, vice president and general manager of the Hardeman County Irrigation Company in Sherman, and a member of the board of directors of the Great Southern Life Insurance Company of Houston.****** The Jefferson Texas Home of CAPTAIN WILLIAM E. SINGLETON is a Historic Landmark.

Along with these lecture notes are 3 sealed envelopes with "HENRY DINGLEY COOLIDGE / CONCORD, MASSACHUSETTS" printed on the envelope flap (the envelopes are sealed, but there is nothing inside, and they are unopened); a piece of unused printed stationery; and a letter addressed to "Mr. Henry D. It is in response to a recommendation by Coolidge for the appointment of Henry J. Walcott to some position or other. The letter is dated August 1, 1910. CONDITION: The recent Sutro library covers have a shelving number etched on the spine, otherwise they are in near fine condition. Internally, there are ex Sutro and related library stamps and marks on the endpapers, title page, and here and there, as noted above; the pages have light toning to the margins; one page has a quarter size edge chip that has been repaired with clear tape and white paper, otherwise the pages remain bright, clean, and clear. A Complete, Solid Copy of this Hard to Find 1920 Directory of Charleston, West Virginia. About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned): ******The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S. Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.****** INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This thick book will require substantial additional shipping charges. JOHN MORGRIDGE is in the Class of '57. He was the CEO and CHAIRMAN of CISCO SYSTEMS. His portrait with a few lines of bio are in the yearbook. My question to him is: How could someone with such a goofy haircut and funny looking ears become such a kind and generous philanthropist? Maybe it has something to do with the last word in your bio: "TASHIA".

The letters are all on official CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS stationery of various sizes (3 are 7x8.5 inches, 2 are 7.5x10.5 inches, 1 is 6x7.5 inches). The letters are all typed and hand signed.

The letters reference a couple of notable events, THE PUEBLO CRISIS and INVESTIGATION, and Moorer's nomination by President Nixon to be Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (a position Moorer held from 1970 to 1974). The letters are dated from 12 JUN 1968 to 14 MAY 1970. Some excerpts: "Once again the Navy owes you and your fine publications a commendation for the considerate and highly responsible manner in which you have reported the entire PUEBLO AFFAIR. Your editorial treatment has been distinguished from the beginning by sympathetic and sensitive understanding". "Too often, other news media around the nation have damaged the Navy or our men by implication or innuendo. Our job would be much less complicated if some in the news media field would follow the responsible example you have set in this matter." "The Country is indeed fortunate that someone in your position is so well aware of the dangers facing us in the years ahead... I assure you that I will do my best in the years ahead and will take advantage of your offer of help." "I appreciate the kind sentiments... incident to my recent nomination by PRESIDENT NIXON to become the next CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF... Warmest personal regards... would enjoy seeing you here in Washington." CONDITION: The letters all have folds from where they were folded to fit into envelopes (envelopes not present), and some light signs of handling, otherwise bright, clean and clear.
