This volume includes additions and corrections to the original volume and the first supplement. You will also find some cemeteries included in this book that were missed in other editions. I have worked primarily with obituaries from local newspapers, which I have accumulated for many years. Some information has come from family members and friends of the deceased, while part of the other information has been verified by visits to cemeteries. Pages 1 through 88 cover the period from the Fall of 1983 through Sept. 1987 and was compiled several years ago. I later decided to add much more information to this book before printing. However, the index is a combined index for both sections. Such data is difficult at best to transcribe and arrange in final book form..."

Part One: ORIENTAL ART, 7x10 inches (18x25.5 cm), 939 lots, 190 pages. Illustrated with b&w photos of some of the items. Auction took place on May 24, 25, 26 and 27, 1944.

Part Two: ORIENTAL ART, 5.25x9.5 inches (16x23.5 cm), 1172 lots, 119 pages. Illustrated with b&w photos of some of the items. Auction took place on June 14, 15 and 16, 1944.

Part Three: ORIENTAL ART, 5.25x9.5 inches (16x23.5 cm), 1253 lots, 139 pages. Illustrated with b&w photos of some of the items. Auction took place on June 28, 29 and 30, 1944.

Supplement: CHINESE, KOREAN & JAPANESE GARDEN SCULPTURES. Booklet, staple-bound, 6x9 inches (15x23 cm), 55 lots, 10 pages. Illustrated with some b&w photos. Auction took place on June 26.

Each of the three main catalogs has an unused absentee bid sheet laid in at the rear.

On the last page of one of the main catalogs and the supplement catalog is a full page ad stating: "FOR VICTORY BUY UNITED STATES WAR BONDS". I guess they forgot to add: "and seize and liquidate all property owned by Japanese-Americans."

CONDITION: Catalog Part One is in GOOD condition, the covers are toned at the margins and spine, worn at the yap edges and spine ends, and have some corner creases; internally there is a crease to the bottom and top corner of the early pages, otherwise the pages are just lightly used and still bright, clean, clear and unmarked. Catalogs Part Two and Part Three are in VERY GOOD condition, their covers are worn along the yap edges, are toned at the spine and edges, and have some corner creases, spine end wear and light signs of handling, but are still solid, bright and clean; internally the pages of Part Two and Part Three are just lightly used, still tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked.

A solid and very presentable set of the catalogs of this three part auction.

The SUPPLEMENT catalog is only in FAIR condition, it has significant soiling, creasing, some shorelining, and what looks like a footprint on its back cover and maybe the front cover too (maybe stomped on by Uncle Sam), but is nonetheless complete and present. It is almost never found as part of the Yamanaka & Co. set of catalogs.

These catalogs are not only a record of Asian antiques that were bought and sold in New York and in museums throughout America pre 1945, they are also an important historic document of the looting of Japanese-American businesses in the name of Liberty during World War II.

About YAMANAKA & CO. and It's Founder (from Wikipedia):

******Yamanaka Sadajiro, b.1866 d.1936, arrived in the United States in 1894, opening a small antique shop in Chelsea, New York City. He subsequently founded Yamanaka & Company, which in 1917 took over a five story building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

After Yamanaka's death, Yamanaka & Company continued to operate under the direction of his heirs, but saw its inventory confiscated and auctioned by the U.S. Government Office of Alien Property Custodian in a series of auctions in 1944.******

An interesting look at the economics behind the building of the California Missions. This 1985 first and limited edition is quite hard to find.

Contains the laid-in folding map "A PLAN OF BOSTON" by Osgood Carleton [1803], and a tipped-in map: "THE TOWN OF BOSTON" undated facsimile originally printed by John Bonner in 1722. (The folding map is often missing from this work.) Also laid in is a hand drawn map, presumably by a previous owner, titled "this is a rough index to these 16 plates" (plates on odd numbered pages 251-281). Handwritten at the bottom of this drawing is "S.F. Tucker / March 1953", presumably the previous owner's name who drew this map.

Condition: The rear cover is damaged, with areas of old water-staining and missing cloth; the front cover and spine are in good shape with some small scrapes and wear at the spine ends and corner tips; aside from the damaged rear board the covers are solid, well bound, and doing their job. INTERNALLY, the upper corner area of the pages is wavy, likely from the water spill to the rear cover, the waviness is most prominent on the latter pages and diminishes as the pages proceed to the front until there is just light waviness to the top margin. Fortunately only the inside rear cover and the blank endpapers show significant shorelining, otherwise just some shorelining to the front and top margin here and there; the margins are toned, as normal in my experience; a few pages are soiled at the margins, there is a pea-size coffee-colored stain to the blank margin of some pages, two pages have a quarter size food stain to the bottom corner; two leaves consisting of pages 221/222 and 223/224 have a bottom corner that has stiff creases and closed tears (looks like the book was badly shut on that corner). Despite its flaws the book is complete, with all its maps, including the folding map, and the maps remain bright and clear.

About JOHN GROVES HALES, the CARTOGRAPHER (from various Internet sources):

******John Groves Hales, b.1785 d.1832, was a cartographer, civil engineer, and surveyor active in Massachusetts in the early part of the 19th century. He is considered by some to be one of the most influential and important New England cartographers of the early 19th century. He was born in England around 1785. Around 1810 Hales emigrated to Portsmouth, New Hampshire where he began surveying New England cities and towns using advanced and highly accurate European style trigonometric techniques in sharp contrast to the rod and chain system more commonly used in the United States at the time. His first major cartographic work in the United States is an 1812 map of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Around 1813 he relocated to Boston, Massachusetts. In 1819 he was commissioned by the City of Boston to produce city maps, including a vast large-scale map of Boston, the manuscripts for which survive in the Boston city records. He remained an active surveyor and mapmaker until his death in 1832. Hales is buried in the St. Matthews Episcopal Church in South Boston.******

From the Introduction: "As part of the 1995 commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Milwaukee Jewish Archives created an exhibit which highlighted participation of Milwaukee Jews in the war... Hundreds of people viewed the exhibit throughout the summer... Many people suggested that we preserve this extremely successful exhibit by creating a book which would contain the photos, narratives, and some of the other materials that were on display over the summer... We hope this book has as much meaning for you as it does for all the people who submitted their precious memories. This was truly a labor of love on the part of nearly 300 authors who wrote the stories inside this very special collection of Jewish remembrances." Rare, I have never seen another copy.
