EIGHT Original 1903 FOURTH OF JULY PARADE PHOTOGRAPHS from the San Francisco Bay Area Contra Costa Gold Rush Town of ANTIOCH. Each large photograph is different yet connected, like a parade!

The photographs were taken at the Antioch, California Fourth of July Parade along Second street across from the Arlington Hotel (of true crime fame in 1906 but that's another story) which is next door to the Antioch Shoe Store (R.H. Wall, Proprietor) with the edge of the L. Meyers Store showing farther down the street. From this same vantage point each richly detailed photograph shows different scenes of the parade. Festive horse drawn carriages, Western riders, beautifully dressed spectators, decorated floats, marching bands, flower and flag draped scenery.

Eight (8) original 7" x 10" card mounted photographs circa 1903. One mount has HOIEN, ANTIOCH, CAL embossed on the front, the rest are unmarked.

VERY GOOD CONDITION: The photographs are bright and clean, the card mounts have light edgewear, 1903 is written in pencil on the front bottom margins, one mount has a penned number beneath the penciled date, one has a corner chip, the backs of the mounts have black paper remnants from being removed from an album, and a few have a penned name to the back top margin, and the mounts are slightly warped, otherwise a unique collection of original photographs.

The San Francisco Bay Area town of Antioch is one of the oldest towns in California. Founded in 1850 just after gold was discovered in the region, it was incorporated in 1872 and flourished as a mining, farming, and dairy community tied to the region by the railroad and deep water ports.

CONDITION: The leather covered boards and spine are falling apart, spine mostly gone, boards worn and soiled, spine folds with old tape marks, etc. Internally, there is some foxing and finger soiling throughout, some speeches rather tightly bound in at the left margin, there is some edge wear and small tears here and there, page 146 has some pieces torn off that are laid in, the inner binding has seriously cracked at a number of places. Nonetheless the pages are complete, remain bound together with the string binding, and, most important, the writing is clear and fully legible throughout.

ACCOMPANIED with an ORIGINAL 1883 FIRST EDITION GENEALOGY BOOK written by O(LIVER) T(ROXELL) EVERHART, M.D.

The book is titled: "A HISTORY OF THE EVERHART and SHOWER FAMILIES from 1744 to 1883, Embracing SIX GENERATIONS. Also A SKETCH of MANCHESTER, MD." It is EX-LIBRARY, bound in library hardcovers with the usual stamps, labels, pockets, and shelving numbers. There is a "withdrawn" stamp on several of the labels. Ex-lib aside the book is in GOOD condition, signs of general handling and wear, but still tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. The book was written and self-published by O.T. Everhart, M.D., primarily for family and friends. As such, the first edition is quite rare.

TWO ITEMS by O.T. EVERHART, M.D. - A One-Of-A-Kind Collection of Handwritten Speeches, and a Rare First Edition of the Everhart & Shower Families.

About OLIVER TROXELL EVERHART (from the Franklin & Marshall College Library website, and elsewhere on the Internet):

******Oliver Troxell Everhart (1832-1921) was a Union Army physician, captured briefly after a raid on Chambersburg before being released. While tending to the wounded he contracted chronic diarrhea, which after moving camps would eventually worsen into an inflammation of the spine which left him paraplegic and resulted in an honorable discharge. Despite his injuries, he continued to practice medicine in York and Perry counties in Pennsylvania before settling in Hanover in 1878. He was a prominent physician, eventually joined in practice by his son Dr. George S. Everhart. He practiced medicine until his death in 1921.******

Newspaper, 4 large leaves vertically folded into 8 pages, 16.5" x 11.5". Folded horizontally as issued. This original 1963 newspaper is in VERY GOOD CONDITION: small mailing label pasted to front page margin with penned number beneath, wear and small tears to the vertical fold but holding well, toning as normal and some light signs of age and use, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A scarce JFK Memorial issue of this pioneering woman's labor union journal.

This JFK Memorial Edition features a full page portrait of JFK with a black memorial border on the front page, inside, within a black memorial border is President Kennedy's Inaugural Address delivered on January 20, 1962 with a b&w photograph of him speaking from the White House balcony. This is followed by the text of JFK's speech before the Convention of the American Federation of Labor Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFLCIO) in New York City on November 15, 1963, also with a black memorial border and b&w photo of him speaking. The back page shows a b&w photo of LBJ and a Message of Support in his new role as President of the United States sent to him by union leader David Dubinsky.

Founded in 1900, ILGWU was one of the largest and most significant labor unions in the American Labor Movement and one of the first with a primarily female membership. It's role in the history of women and immigrant Jewish and Italian women continues to be relevant today. Justice was published in English, Italian, Spanish, and Yiddish with much variation in content.

***** About the ILGWU from the Kheel Center for Labor Management Documentation and Archives Cornell University Library:

The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union was founded in New York City in 1900 by mostly Socialist immigrant workers who sought to unite the various crafts in the growing women's garment industry. The union soon reflected changes in the sector and rapidly organized thousands of unskilled and semi-skilled women, mostly Jewish and Italian young immigrants. Exemplifying the "new unionism," the ILGWU led two of the most widespread and best-known industrial strikes of the early Twentieth Century: the shirtwaist makers' strike of 1909 in New York City and the cloak makers' strike of 1910 in Chicago. The union also tried to adapt to the fragmented and unstable nature of the industry. It adopted the "protocol of peace," a system of industrial relations that attempted to ensure stability and limit strikes and production disruption by providing for an arbitration system to resolve disputes.

The ILGWU exemplified the European-style social unionism of its founding members. They pursued bread and butter issues but provided educational opportunities, benefits, and social programs to union members as well. In 1919, the ILGWU became the first American union to negotiate an unemployment compensation fund that was contributed to by its employers. The ILGWU also pioneered in the establishment of an extremely progressive health care program for its members which included not only regional Union Health Centers but also a resort for union workers, known as Unity House. The Union also had an imaginative and pioneering Education Department which not only trained workers in traditional union techniques, but provided courses in citizenship and the English language.

This volume includes additions and corrections to the original volume and the first supplement. You will also find some cemeteries included in this book that were missed in other editions. I have worked primarily with obituaries from local newspapers, which I have accumulated for many years. Some information has come from family members and friends of the deceased, while part of the other information has been verified by visits to cemeteries. Pages 1 through 88 cover the period from the Fall of 1983 through Sept. 1987 and was compiled several years ago. I later decided to add much more information to this book before printing. However, the index is a combined index for both sections. Such data is difficult at best to transcribe and arrange in final book form..."

REAL ESTATE RECORD: A complete transcript of the City Assessors' books relating to real estate, showing name of owner, size of lot, and valuation of every estate in Worcester.

Published by the Drew Allis Company, Worcester (Massachusetts), 1894. This is the original, vintage directory.

Hardcovers, blue cloth covered spine and boards, 6x9 inches, 312 pages, including interesting ads of the day at the rear.

This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, with a Sutro Library bookplate tipped into the front enpapers, and some related library labels and marks here and there. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books originally collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until, in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home at SFSU the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it's just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time.

FAIR CONDITION: The covers are rubbed, scraped, and worn through at the edges and corners; the spine gilt lettering has substantially faded but is still legible upon close examination; nonetheless these original covers are still doing their job. Internally, the rear inner hinge has split but is holding; there are some creases, edge chips, and small spots here and there, otherwise the pages remain bright, clean, and clear.

A Complete, Original 1894 HOUSE DIRECTORY of RESIDENTS and VALUATION of PROPERTIES of WORCESTER.

About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned):

******The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S.

Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.******
