ASSOCIATION COPY: This set was previously owned by WINFIELD SCOTT WELLINGTON, b.1897 d.1979, with his bold and florid signature on the front pastedown of volumes 2-9. Wellington was a noted San Francisco Bay Area Architect, Museum Director, Artist, and Professor of Decorative Arts at UC Berkeley. He was also a noted collector of ceramics.

Each volume covers a different period in East-Asian Ceramic History:

    (1) Japan: Pre-Historic, Proto-Historic and Early Historic Periods. (2) Japan: Ceramics in the Nara to Muromachi Periods. (3) Japan: Ceramics in the Momoyama period. (4) Japan Ceramics in the Edo Period (part I).

    (5) Japan: Ceramics in the Edo period (part II). (6) The Edo period (part III). (7) Tea Ceremony Implements. (8) From Ancient China to Six Dynasties. (9) China: Sui and Tang Dynasties. (10) China: Sung and Liao Dynasties. (11) China: Yuan and Ming Dynasties. (12) China: Ch'ing Dynasty and Annamese and Thai Ceramics. (13) Korea: Pre-Koryo and Koryo Periods. (14) Korean Ceramics in the Li Dynasty.

Volumes 15 and 16 which ARE NOT part of this set, were the only volumes not related to East-Asian ceramics. Volume 15 is on the ceramics of "Europe & Others" and. Volume 16 is on Contemporary Ceramics (mainly non-Asian). As a collector of indigenous East-Asian ceramics perhaps this is why Professor Winfield Scott Wellington was not interested in those last two works.

CONDITION: Volume 1 is in GOOD condition: The back cover of has the ghost of a large sticker that was removed, the front and rear covers have some small stains, and there is a bump to the top of the spine; internally, there is some waviness to the bottom margin of the first few pages, and there are small rust stains and light offsetting to the rear endpapers from the laid-in English language booklet, otherwise the book is tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

VOLUMES 2-14 are in VERY GOOD condition, just a bit of soiling to some of the covers; tissue guards have been removed from most of the frontispieces, else tight, bright, clear, clean and unmarked.

ALL THE PLATES (1800+ in the 14 volume set) are brilliant.

A couple of the laid-in booklets are wavy, and a couple have pulled from their staples but are complete.

Considered to be one of the most extensive published works on East-Asian ceramics.

Imrie's signature is dated "San Francisco, 1/9/76". His inscription to Rick Schmidt is dated "9/1/94". ALSO SIGNED by RICK SCHMIDT (as the last owner of the book), and dated "P.T., WA, 2/12/05."

There are lots of underlining, circling of text, and margin marks noting various passages, likely made by Curtis Imrie or Rick Schmidt in preparation for one film project or another. A filmmaker's actual working copy of a Brakhage filmmaking book. Nice.

Stan Brakhage is considered to be one of the most important figures in 20th century experimental film. Rick Schmidt is a prolific independent filmmaker and the author of the highly regarded book: "Feature Filmmaking at Used Car Prices". Curtis Imrie was an independent filmmaker, radio personality, and champion burro racer.

The inscription reads: "Rick / One good support book deserves another. B-4 FX2 @ Used Car $ [before Feature Filmmaking At Used Car Prices] there was only one Bible for unrepentant actor filmmakers. This one. Appropriately leather bound [actually leatherette I think]. Either return it sometime or walk the talk writing with an audio visual diamond where we diagram the human heart. I'll be a major color on your palette anytime but hey...face up to your talent. Do it. / as ever, C [initialed]"

It appears likely that Rick Schmidt sent Curtis Imrie a copy of his book "Feature Filmmaking At Used Car Prices", and Imrie reciprocated by sending Schmidt a copy of Brakhage's book. It is unclear to me who had Brakhage sign the book. Rick Schmidt was more in Brakhage's circle, they both were prolific independent filmmakers and went to many of the same film conferences, independent film events, etc.; but Curtis Imrie and Stan Brakhage both spent a lot of time living in Colorado.

What a journey through the hands of independent filmmakers - Stan Brakhage - Curtis Imrie - Rick Schmidt.

CONDITION: A couple small indents to the covers, lots of underlining, circling, and margin marks noting important passages (as detailed above), a pea size stain to the front margin of one page of text; otherwise tight, bright and clean, with signatures and inscriptions that are bright, clear and bold.

    About STAN BRAKHAGE (from Wikipedia):

******James Stanley Brakhage, b.1933 d.2003, was an American filmmaker. He is considered to be one of the most important figures in 20th century experimental film.****** (An artistic genius imho.)

About the CRANACH PRESS (from various Internet sources):

******The Cranach Press was founded by Count Harry Graf Kessler (1868-1937) with the undertaking to print the finest possible editions of the world's greatest literature in new and important German translations. Kessler employed print-men and illustrators of outstanding ability and produced some of the world's most beautiful books.

In 1913 Kessler commissioned Edward Gordon Craig, an English theatrical designer and theoretician, to make woodcut illustrations for a sumptuous edition of Shakespeare's Hamlet for the Cranach Press. A German translation by Gerhart Hauptmann, with illustrations by Craig, was finally published in Weimar in 1928. The English version, edited by J. Dover Wilson, came out in 1930. This book, printed on fine paper, using different type-faces, with marginal notes with source quotations, and featuring Craig's woodcuts, is regarded by many as one of the finest examples of the printer's art to have been published in the 20th century.******

    PHILADELPHIA: Crissy & Markley, Printers, 1852, 1853 and 1854.

The gorgeous plates are what make these works rare and wonderful. As the Publisher writes on the last page of Volume III: "Our Plates are unsurpassed. There is not a work of the kind published in London whose plates are more beautifully executed, certainly not in this country. There are in the Volume just furnished [Volume III], COUNTING EACH DOUBLE PLATE AS TWO, THIRTEEN PLATES, all colored, and of most beautiful subjects. The paper on which the Florist is printed is much superior to that generally for magazines: it is made for us at one of the best mills in the country..."

PLATES INCLUDED IN THE TWO VOLUMES:

VOLUME I (containing issues from Volume I and Volume II) has TWELVE HAND COLORED PLATES (10 single page plates, and 1 double page plate which the Publisher counts as 2).

VOLUME III: Contains TEN HAND COLORED PLATES (of the THIRTEEN called for), (4 single page plates, and 3 double page plates which the Publisher counts as 6)

    The ISSUES in the book titled VOLUME I (containing issues from V.I and V.II), published in 1852 and 1853, are: V.I N.2 TWO PLATES + pgs 33-64; V.1 N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.I N.6 pgs 127-192; V.II N.3 ONE PLATE + pgs 65-96; V.II N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.II N.6 ONE PLATE + pgs 161-192; V.II N.7 ONE PLATE + pgs 193-224; V.II N.8 pgs 218-256 (Publisher's incorrect pagination); V.II N.9 ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 257-288; V.II N.10 ONE PLATE + pgs 289-320; V.II N.11 pgs 321-352; and V.II N.12 TWO PLATES + pgs 354-388. About THOMAS W. LAWSON (from Wikipedia and other Internet sources):

******Thomas William Lawson, b.1857 d.1925, was an American businessman, writer, and shipbuilder. A highly controversial Boston stock promoter, he is known for both his efforts to promote reforms in the stock markets and the fortune he amassed for himself through highly dubious stock manipulations.

Lawson said he ran away at the age of 12 from his widowed mother, left school and managed on his own until he found work in a stockbroker's office. At 17 he was trading stocks and by the time he was 30 he was a millionaire (billionaire in today's dollars)..

Like many wealthy men of the era, Lawson liked to build things. Not just houses and companies but boats and ships. No matter what the scale, Lawson took a shot. His most well known attempts at building ships reveal the type of man Lawson was. First in 1900, Lawson built the Independence. He put the sloop forward as a contender to defend the 1901 America's Cup. When told by the New York Yacht Club that he needed to be a club member to compete or put the Independence in another member's name, Lawson refused. He would only compete, as the boat's name suggested, as an independent. The Club denied his entry.

In 1902 he built the "Thomas W. Lawson", a seven-masted, steel-hulled schooner which was used primarily to haul coal and oil along the East Coast of the United States. At the time it was the largest schooner and largest sailing vessel without an auxiliary engine ever built. The Thomas W. Lawson was destroyed off the uninhabited island of Annet, in the Isles of Scilly, in a storm on December 14, 1907, killing all but two of its eighteen member crew. Its cargo of 58,000 barrels of light paraffin oil caused perhaps the first large marine oil spill.******

Original vintage photocopied dialogue continuity screenplay, white paper covers, 45 numbered pages, 8.5" x 14", printed on one side only, bound with one staple at the top left corner. The Dialogue Continuity is a shot-by-shot / reel-by-reel breakdown of the script. VERY GOOD Condition: age toning and light wear, 3 pages pulled from the staple but all pages are present, bottom edgewear to one pulled page, in some areas of the page bottoms the photocopying has made the printing difficult to read, but it is still mostly legible, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Scarce, this is the only copy of the Dialogue Continuity Screenplay of The Magnificent Seven I have seen, there are none in the OCLC.

Continuity Scripts were an important part of the film industry in its early days. They were typically created after a film was "in the can", but before it was released, in order to create a written "copy" of the film. A good "Continuity" provided a transcription of every shot and scene in detail as it occurred in the finished film, something that could obviously not be known until a film was completed. Continuities were created both for copyright protection and for a "record" of a film. A true continuity script was therefore often the only archived, scene-by-scene, record of many early films.

The Magnificent Seven, the iconic western by John Sturges, is a celebrated adaptation of the legendary Akira Kurosawa film The Seven Samurai, transferred to the Wild West, and shot on location in Mexico. The Magnificent Seven has only William Roberts credited as the screenwriter, but both Walter Bernstein and Walter Newman contributed significantly to the creation of one of the greatest westerns ever filmed.

THREE LARGE FOLIO PLATES based on Original 17th or early 18th Century Engravings. These Reprints were probably printed in the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

The engravings measure 15x21.5 inches, including margins.

They all appear disbound from the same, large folio book, but I do not know which book. My guess would be a German edition. All the plates appear to have been printed in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, and most appear to be facsimiles of engravings from the 1600s and 1700s.

The plates have stamped information just below the images: "Ch. Milsan Sculp." and "Aubriet del Paris 1763", but I believe that information is incorrect.

Nonetheless, a wonderful group of 3 large engraved plates, with scenes that are quite lovely. Would look great framed.

About THE RHYMERS' CLUB (from Wikipedia):

******The Rhymers' Club, founded in 1890 by W. B. Yeats and Ernest Rhys, was a gathering of some of London's most distinctive poets, who met at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese public house, off Fleet Street, and in the Domino Room of the Café Royal, to drink and read aloud each other's work.

The Rhymers' Club published two volumes of verse. The first, entitled The Book of the Rhymers' Club was published by Elkin Mathews in 1892. The Second Book of the Rhymers' Club appeared two years later in 1894, published by the recently merged Elkin Mathews and John Lane Publishers. They had print runs of 450 and 650 respectively. Those of the group appearing in these two volumes included: William Butler Yeats, T.W. Rolleston, John Todhunter, Richard Le Gallienne, Lionel Johnson, Arthur Cecil Hillier, Ernest Dowson, Victor Plarr, Ernest Radford, Arthur Symons, G.A. Greene, Edwin J. Ellis, and Ernest Rhys.

The Rhymers' Club stopped meeting in 1895.

Yeats later in his autobiography Yeats sought to mythologize the collective, calling it the "Tragic Generation" whose members were destined for failure and, in many cases, early death.******
