    ALBERT ARTHUR ALLEN

EXHIBITION POSTER featuring a RISQUE ROARING 20s PHOTOGRAPH by ALBERT ARTHUR ALLEN. The photograph shows a line of NUDE WOMEN in a stylized pose. The photograph was likely taken in the midst of the Roaring Twenties when Albert Arthur Allen was most active (and at his most scandalous).

Poster, 20x24 inches, mounted onto stiff card backing. Will be mailed flat. Ready to be framed.

Published in 1978. The bottom right corner of the poster states "Copyright 1978 Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Titelman". It is presumed this was a poster announcing an upcoming exhibition of Allen's photographs that took place in 1979.

About ALBERT ARTHUR ALLEN (from Wikipedia):

******Albert Arthur Allen, b.1886 d.1962, was an American figure photographer and film director known for nude portraiture.

Allen was born to a wealthy New England family in 1886, and was educated in Boston. At the age of twenty-one, he moved to California and spent years traveling and studying art. In 1916, he opened the Allen Art Studios in Oakland, California. The studio later became known as the Allen Institute of Fine and Applied Art, before it was destroyed by a fire in 1925. The following year, Allen rebuilt the studio and called it the Classic Motion Picture Corporation, a venture that lasted two years before declaring bankruptcy.

A motorcycle accident in 1923 left Allen permanently disabled, but he continued to work. His nude photographs were considered scandalous by American standards during the Roaring Twenties. He was indicted for sending obscene materials through interstate mail, and spent years in litigation.

Little is known about Allen's later life. His first commercial exhibition did not take place until 1979, seventeen years after his death. Allen died in Hayward, California, at the age of 75.******

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York owns 20 of his watercolors. You can read about Anselm Kiefer and his works on his Wikipedia page.

An interesting side-note about Laura L. Carpenter/Laura Carpenter Fine Art, the previous owner of this book. Laura Carpenter was a fine arts gallery owner in Santa Fe who became very close friends with a wealthy woman. The wealthy woman poured over $1.5 into Laura's gallery. Things didn't go so well with the Gallery or the friendship. Bankruptcy and lawsuits followed. The curious can search Laura Carpenter Fine Art to read the ugly details.

******With this exhibition Museum Ritter is making a small departure from its normal exhibition programme and showing art relating to the subject of chocolate. The reason for this digression is the 100th anniversary of the Ritter company in 2012.

Apart from numerous works made of chocolate, the exhibition also contains a large number of works from a variety of disciplines which revolve around chocolate in the broadest sense. Thus the show with its almost 60 objects, paintings, prints, installations, photographs and videos by almost 40 artists from the 20th and 21st centuries gives insight into art made of chocolate and art done with chocolate as its motif. Historical approaches by artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys and Dieter Roth are every bit as present as "material pictures" or collages from the 1960s and 1970s, along with outstanding examples of cutting edge art done in chocolate. In short, this art has at least as many facets as there are varieties of chocolate

Artists in the Exhibition: Sonja Alhäuser, Peter Anton, Günter Beier, Joseph Beuys, Corrado Bonomi, Stephen Craig, Paul McCarthy, Marcel Duchamp, Maria Dundakova, Ulrike Flaig, Yang Ah Ham, Richard Hamilton, Al Hansen, Thomas Heger, Dagmar Hugk, Klaus Illi & Bettina Bürkle, Ruth Knecht, Karin Kneffel, Lernert & Sander, Anja Luithle, Guido Münch, David Neat, Mel Ramos, Thomas Rentmeister, Hans Peter Reuter, Dieter Roth, Judith Samen, Karin Sander, Roswitha Schaab, Rolf Schneider, Roswitha Schober, Kurt Schwitters, Timm Ulrichs, Cornelius Völker, Wolf Vostell.******

This is a JAPANESE ART MONOGRAPH on a POTTER / CERAMACIST. The monograph consists mainly of his GORGEOUS TEA CUPS, though there are some paintings and calligraphy as well. About JUAN O'GORMAN and his CENTRAL LIBRARY MOSAIC (from Wikipedia):

******Juan O'Gorman's most celebrated work due to its creativity, construction technique, and dimensions, are the four thousand square meters murals covering the four faces of the building of the Central Library at Ciudad Universitaria at UNAM. These murals are mosaics made from millions of colored stones that he gathered all around Mexico in order to be able to obtain the different colors he needed. The north side pictures Mexico's pre-Hispanic past and the south facade its colonial one, while the east wall depicts the contemporary world, and the west shows the university and contemporary Mexico.

"From the beginning, I had the idea of making mosaics of colored stones in the walls of the collections, with a technique in which I was already well experienced. With these mosaics the library would be different from the other buildings of Ciudad Universitaria, and it would be given a particular Mexican character."******

About the CENTRAL LIBRARY (from Wikipedia):

******The Central Library of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) holds one of the largest collections in Mexico. The building is covered with the mural Historical Representation of Culture, created by the Mexican artist Juan O'Gorman. His unique masterpiece has made the Central Library one of the most iconic buildings in modern Mexico. In July 2007, UNESCO proclaimed the Central Library, along with the Central Campus of the University City, as a World Heritage site.

The four thousand square foot mural is made out of thousands of colored stones, something that never had been done at that scale. According to the artist, in each of the four walls that make up the surface of the mosaic, he represented three fundamental historical facets of Mexican culture: the pre-Hispanic era, the Spanish colonial era, and the modern age.******

SIDNEY HERBERT SIME (S.H. Sime), b.1865 d.1941, was an English artist in the late Victorian and succeeding periods, mostly remembered for his fantastic and satirical artwork, especially his story illustrations for Irish author Lord Dunsany. - Wikipedia

JOSEPH CHARLES HOLBROOKE, b.1878 d.1958, was an English composer, conductor, and pianist...Holbrooke was fascinated by the writings of Edgar Allan Poe which deal with the supernatural and the macabre, eventually producing over thirty compositions which he referred to as his Poeana. These included orchestral works (The Raven, Ulalume, The Sleeper, Amontillado, and The Pit and the Pendulum), a double concerto for clarinet and bassoon (Tamerlane), choral works (a choral symphony Homage to E.A. Poe, and a poem for chorus and orchestra The Bells), a ballet (The Masque of the Red Death), a multitude of chamber works (such as the Clarinet Quintet Ligeia, the Trio Fairyland, and the Nonet Irene) and several piano pieces. - Wikipedia

HANDWRITTEN TWO PAGE LETTER by BOOTH TARKINGTON to SILBERMAN (Elkan or Abris of E. & A. Silberman Galleries). The brothers Elkan and Abris Silberman ran a major New York Gallery and were greatly responsible for building and caring for Booth Tarkington's art collection. Tarkington's letter references a number of artworks that are in need of repair. The letter is written in a friendly and jocular tone, reminiscent of much of Tarkington's writing.

The letter is long, written on both sides of a 9x15.5 inch piece of heavy stock paper. The letter has several folds where it was likely folded to fit into an envelope (no envelope is present). It is dated May 12, 1939. The letter comes with a two…

The letter is long, written on both sides of a 9x15.5 inch piece of heavy stock paper. The letter has several folds where it was likely folded to fit into an envelope (no envelope is present). It is dated May 12, 1939. The letter comes with a two page typed transcript on onion skin paper. I don't know who made this early transcript, perhaps Silberman or another previous owner of the book and letter.

The letter is laid-into a special SIGNED, LIMITED, FIRST EDITION of "SOME OLD PORTRAITS", by BOOTH TARKINGTON. The limitation/signature page states this is copy #34 of 247 copies. Published by Doubleday, Doran & Co., New York, 1939. Hardcovers, 7.5x10 inches, xx +249 pages, Illustrated with portraiture plates.

Interesting that Tarkington's letter to his art dealer friend was written in the same year as his non-fiction book about art was published.

Condition: NEAR FINE book, sharp, tight, bright, clean and unmarked, one of the nicest copies I have seen. The letter is in GOOD solid condition, folds and signs of handling but still solid with handwriting that is bright and clear. The typed transcript of the letter has tears, creases and areas of the blank margin are torn away, but it is still textually complete and fully legible.

Booth Tarkington was a collector of art and was quite knowledgeable about the subject. He served for many years as a trustee of the John Herron Art Museum. The New York art dealers Elkan and Abris Silberman (E. & A. Silberman Galleries) helped build his collection and became his friend. Tarkington and the Silbermans corresponded for many years. He even used the brothers as the basis for nis 1934 romantic novel "Rumbin Galleries". In 2016 the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields held an Exhibition of works from Tarkington's collection, titled: "A Gentleman Collector from Indiana: Portraits from the Collection of Booth Tarkington".

About E. & A. SILBERMAN GALLERIES (from Wikipedia):

******E. & A. Galleries was founded in 1938 by brothers Elkan Silberman, d.1952, and Abris Silberman, d.1968, from Austria. In the 1920s, the Silberman brothers owned the E. & A. Silberman art dealership in Vienna. After the 1938 Anschluss their company was expropriated. Fearing persecution the Silbermans left for the United States where they founded a new art dealership in New York under the name E. & A. Silberman Galleries, Inc. They built a reputation as the art dealership "that had helped form museum collections", as well as the collections of G. H. A. Clowes, Dan Fellows Platt, Booth Tarkington, and L. M. Rabinowitz.******

About BOUQUETS TO ART at the de Young Museum of San Francisco (compiled from Wikipedia and the book's Introduction): ******Bouquets to Art is an annual floral exhibition hosted by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Florists, designers and garden clubs are invited to present floral interpretations of works in the museums permanent collections, and the floral displays are presented in juxtaposition with the works that inspired them. Originally begun at the de Young Museum in 1984, Bouquets to Art later moved to the Legion of Honor where it flourished from 1996 to 2005. Bouquets to Art returned to the newly reconstructed de Young in 2006 commencing a marvelous new legacy. Bouquets to Art at the de Young showcases work by approximately 150 of the Bay Area's most talented and renowned floral designers. This select group of artists displays original creations ranging in style from the classical to the avant garde. Their floral designs draw inspiration from art pieces in the de Young's permanent collections, and are presented along with art at the Bouquets to Art event. In addition to pairing floral designs with the museum's artworks, the annual exhibition features an extensive program of floral design demonstrations and activities. Since its inception the event has become a cherished San Francisco tradition for both art and flower devotees and draws an avid following from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.******
