ORIGINAL DRAFT FILM SCREENPLAY of THICK AS THIEVES, a 1998 film starring ALEC BALDWIN, Andre Braugher, Rebecca De Mornay, Julia Sweeney, and Janeane Garofalo.

Award Winning MAKE-UP ARTIST ALLAN APONE'S PERSONAL WORKING COPY, with his name at the top of the title page. Allan Apone was the HEAD OF THE MAKEUP DEPARTMENT for the film.

What makes Allan Apone's copy especially rare and wonderful is that it is filled with 105 unique color photographs of the stars, including many of a 1998 Alec Baldwin. The photos are tipped-on to the blank backsides of many pages of the script, facing pages in which the stars have a scene requiring special makeup. The photographs show the stars in various poses, mostly without make-up (a few with some trial blood and wounds), mostly in what appear to be their home or yard settings, in poses and with facial expressions probably called for by Apone in order to help him decide how to make them up for various scenes (what scar goes where, what blood should cover that nice shirt, how should that face look when struck by a bullet, how old should I make that face look, etc.) The photographs are mostly 3x5 inch, all in color, all unique.

A true working copy. There is green highlighting throughout, and blue lines highlighting scenes requiring makeup: "Blood is on his right hand and the right sleeve of his jacket. He takes off the jacket, turns it inside out, uses it to wipe his hand clean." There are also a couple notes written in the margin regarding makeup: "Muscle bleeds from right side corner of mouth down chin".,

The script is a revised draft dated March 25, 1998, with multi-colored revision pages (blue, pink, and yellow) dated to April 13, 1998. There are 113 8.5x11 inch pages, various colors, .photocopied on one side only, 3-hole punched in the left margin, bound with 2 brass brads. The script was written by Scott Sanders & Arthur Krystal, based on the novel by Patrick Quinn. It was directed by Scott Sanders.

GOOD Condition: The script shows general signs of handling and use (it's a working copy after all) with some creases and a bit of soiling here and there; the title page has torn from the brass brads and is laid on loosely, it has tearing and creases around its upper and lower holes, and some edge wear and corner creases; otherwise a complete, bright, clean and clear copy. The photographs are all very bright and sharp, a couple are creased where the script folded on them incorrectly.

A unique insider look into the world of film makeup. With the 105 photographs of the stars, most as blank slates ready to be changed by the makeup artist, this script is truly a wonder.

Text in French, the humorous and risqué drawings speak for themselves in all languages.

GOOD Condition: The binder has some rubs, scrapes to the folds, and a couple white marks, but is solid and attractive; internally, the issues and pages are toned as normal, otherwise bright, clean and unmarked.

A nice set, includes drawings unique to this publication by some noted French artists of the day.

******LE FROU-FROU was a French magazine published from 1900 until the beginning of WWI. It was known for its humorous and risqué content, including illustrations of can-can dancers, cartoons, and humorous anecdotes of Parisian life.******

THREE LARGE FOLIO PLATES based on Original 17th or early 18th Century Engravings. These Reprints were probably printed in the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

The engravings measure 15x21.5 inches, including margins.

They all appear disbound from the same, large folio book, but I do not know which book. My guess would be a German edition. All the plates appear to have been printed in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, and most appear to be facsimiles of engravings from the 1600s and 1700s.

The plates have stamped information just below the images: "Ch. Milsan Sculp." and "Aubriet del Paris 1763", but I believe that information is incorrect.

Condition: The images all have soiling, some spotting, and are creased, chipped and worn at the edges and margins; some have edge tears, some have marks, all have general signs of age. Nonetheless, a wonderful group of 3 large engraved plates, with scenes that are quite lovely. Would look great framed.

THREE ORIGINAL PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAVURE ENGRAVINGS of BREST (France) by ARTAUD ET NOZAIS, Nantes, undated but circa 1915. Fold-open panoramic plates - photo engravings, numbered 1 - 3, originally of a set of such engravings. Each photogravure is 22x9.5" (56 cm x 24 cm). Each has printed information at the bottom right corner: "ARTAUD ET NOZAIS, IMP.-EDIT., NANTES." One of the plates is hand-tinted. 1. BREST - LE PONT DE RECOUVRANCE (Though this bridge was Officially the "Pont National" prior to its being destroyed, rebuilt, and renamed "Le Pont de Recouvrance" after World War II, this is an early image of the Original Bridge circa 1915. The bridge, even in 1915, was often referred to as the Pont de Recouvrance because it connects to the Recouvrance District of Brest.) 2. BREST - LE PORT DE COMMERCE ET LA RADE. (This Photogravure is beautifully HAND-TINTED.) 3. BREST - LE PORT DE GUERRE. Only FAIR CONDITION. The photogravures each have a stiff vertical fold down the middle as issued; there are also numerous vertical creases, probably from being rolled-up numerous times; there is edge and corner wear; there is light foxing; and there are general signs of handling. The postcard images by Artaud et Nozais are easily found, but these ORIGINAL PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAVURE PLATES circa 1915 are VERY SCARCE.

The descriptive sheet has some ink underlining and an ink line that marks a paragraph. The portfolio folder has two ink stamps on the front cover that read: AH PAMPHLET FILE (American Heritage Pamphlet File). The portfolio also has some wear to its edges, including some small closed tears, and some light stains and soiling, but is still doing its job well. As these have been stored folded in half, they will be shipped folded.

ALVIN C. HOLLINGSWORTH (1928-2000) Leading African American Artist, trail blazing Black comic artist, painter, illustrator, abstract expressionist, best known for his paintings relating to civil rights issues, the experience of Blacks within the urban landscape, Black women's rights, jazz, spirituality, and dance. Founding member with Romare Bearden of the Spiral Group of African American artists who linked their creative expression to social justice, other prominent members included Charles Alston, Emma Amos, Earl Miller, Norman Lewis, Hale Woodruff, Richard Mayhew, and Reginald Gammon. As early as 1945 he was illustrating comic books for various publishers including Cat Man Comics, which were issued under his name and pseudonyms, by the early 1950's he successfully created his own nationally syndicated comic.

******Angelo Cesar Cardoso de Sousa, b.1938 d.2011, was a Portuguese painter, sculptor, draftsman and professor, known for continuously experimenting with new techniques in his works. He was seen as a scholar of light and color who explored minimalism in radical new ways.

Angelo de Sousa, along with Armando Alves, Jorge Pinheiro and José Rodrigues, became part of a group known as "Os Quatro Vintes" (The Four Twenties).

Angelo de Sousa had his first solo exhibition in 1959 and since then his works have been shown worldwide. In 1975 he received the International Prize of the 13th Sao Paulo Art Biennial and in 2007 the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation presented him with the Gulbenkian Prize.******

This was Kiefer's third artists' book. It was published on the occasion of his exhibition in the Groningen Museum in an edition of 500 copies, instead of an exhibition catalog. The book shows the installation "Hoffmann von Fallersleben auf Helgoland" in 82 full-bleed b&w photographic illustrations.

A solid, very presentable copy.

ANSELM KIEFER, b.1945, is an important German-Austrian artist. His works are in the collection of many major museums in the U.S. and throughout the world. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York owns 20 of his watercolors. You can read about Anselm Kiefer and his works on his Wikipedia page.

An interesting side-note about Laura L. Carpenter/Laura Carpenter Fine Art, the previous owner of this book. Laura Carpenter was a fine arts gallery owner in Santa Fe who became very close friends with a wealthy woman. The wealthy woman poured over $1.5 into Laura's gallery. Things didn't go so well with the Gallery or the friendship. Bankruptcy and lawsuits followed. The curious can search Laura Carpenter Fine Art to read the ugly details.

GOOD condition: the covers have shelf rubs, scratches and some soiling; internally nice, "NFS" is written at the top corner of the title page, otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and clear, and the Laszlo Balogh inscription is sharp and bright.

This is a JAPANESE ART MONOGRAPH on a POTTER / CERAMACIST. The monograph consists mainly of his GORGEOUS TEA CUPS, though there are some paintings and calligraphy as well. I do not read Japanese and can not figure out who the potter is, but perhaps you can do both. He seems to me to be a somewhat recent ceramicist making teacups in a traditional style. Softcover book, 8.5x10.5 inches. There are 80 COLOR PLATES of CERAMIC WORKS, either 1 or 2 to a page, plus 24 PLATES of CALLIGRAPHY and PAINTINGS, mostly 1 to a page. There are also some pages of text at both the front and rear of the book, text entirely in Japanese. VERY GOOD condition, a bit of shelf rubbing and signs of light handling, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A very nice copy.
