THREE ORIGINAL PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAVURE ENGRAVINGS of BREST (France) by ARTAUD ET NOZAIS, Nantes, undated but circa 1915. Fold-open panoramic plates - photo engravings, numbered 1 - 3, originally of a set of such engravings. Each photogravure is 22x9.5" (56 cm x 24 cm). Each has printed information at the bottom right corner: "ARTAUD ET NOZAIS, IMP.-EDIT., NANTES." One of the plates is hand-tinted. 1. BREST - LE PONT DE RECOUVRANCE (Though this bridge was Officially the "Pont National" prior to its being destroyed, rebuilt, and renamed "Le Pont de Recouvrance" after World War II, this is an early image of the Original Bridge circa 1915. The bridge, even in 1915, was often referred to as the Pont de Recouvrance because it connects to the Recouvrance District of Brest.) 2. BREST - LE PORT DE COMMERCE ET LA RADE. (This Photogravure is beautifully HAND-TINTED.) 3. BREST - LE PORT DE GUERRE. Only FAIR CONDITION. The photogravures each have a stiff vertical fold down the middle as issued; there are also numerous vertical creases, probably from being rolled-up numerous times; there is edge and corner wear; there is light foxing; and there are general signs of handling. Nonetheless, these panoramic plates remain clear and the images are wonderful. The postcard images by Artaud et Nozais are easily found, but these ORIGINAL PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAVURE PLATES circa 1915 are VERY SCARCE.

Deaccessioned from the American Heritage archive collection. Four Gorgeous Prints Reproducing Original Hand-Colored / Illuminated Family Histories. Each print measures 14x18", including the white borders. The prints have a caption in their bottom border. There is also a 14x18" descriptive sheet that accompanies the prints. The 4 prints and the descriptive sheet are housed together in a paper portfolio. The four prints are: (1) Register of WILLIAM DEGROOT'S FAMILY. Provides Names, Births, Marriages, Deaths, with dates ranging from 1751 (the birth dates of William and Ann Latourrette Degroot) through 1835 (the death of Henry Degroot). (2) Birth and Baptismal Certificate of JOHANES MILLER of Pennsylvania. Text in Pennsylvania Dutch / German. Dates of 1788 and 1811. (3) Birth, Baptismal, Confirmation, and Marriage Certificate of JOHANN NICHOLAUS LOTT. Text in Pennsylvania Dutch / German. Dates of 1769 and 1786. (4) Birth, Baptismal, Confirmation, and Marriage Certificate of MARGARETHA SCHLOSSER SCHWARTZ. Text in Pennsylvania Dutch / German. Dates of 1773 through 1790. GOOD CONDITION: The Prints and their Portfolio have been folded in half, each now has a folding crease across its center; the prints also have a lighter diagonal crease. The Prints are in otherwise Very Good condition, bright and clear. They would look beautiful mounted and/or framed. The descriptive sheet has some ink underlining and an ink line that marks a paragraph. The portfolio folder has two ink stamps on the front cover that read: AH PAMPHLET FILE (American Heritage Pamphlet File). The portfolio also has some wear to its edges, including some small closed tears, and some light stains and soiling, but is still doing its job well. As these have been stored folded in half, they will be shipped folded.

EXHIBITION POSTER featuring a RISQUE ROARING 20s PHOTOGRAPH by ALBERT ARTHUR ALLEN. The photograph shows a line of NUDE WOMEN in a stylized pose. The photograph was likely taken in the midst of the Roaring Twenties when Albert Arthur Allen was most active (and at his most scandalous).

Poster, 20x24 inches, mounted onto stiff card backing. Will be mailed flat. Ready to be framed.

Published in 1978. The bottom right corner of the poster states "Copyright 1978 Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Titelman". It is presumed this was a poster announcing an upcoming exhibition of Allen's photographs that took place in 1979.

VERY GOOD condition, there is a very light 1x2 inch water stain at the bottom margin, otherwise bright, clean and clear.

This poster is much more uncommon than the "Chorus Line" poster that appears for sale from time to time.

About ALBERT ARTHUR ALLEN (from Wikipedia):

******Albert Arthur Allen, b.1886 d.1962, was an American figure photographer and film director known for nude portraiture.

Allen was born to a wealthy New England family in 1886, and was educated in Boston. At the age of twenty-one, he moved to California and spent years traveling and studying art. In 1916, he opened the Allen Art Studios in Oakland, California. The studio later became known as the Allen Institute of Fine and Applied Art, before it was destroyed by a fire in 1925. The following year, Allen rebuilt the studio and called it the Classic Motion Picture Corporation, a venture that lasted two years before declaring bankruptcy.

A motorcycle accident in 1923 left Allen permanently disabled, but he continued to work. His nude photographs were considered scandalous by American standards during the Roaring Twenties. He was indicted for sending obscene materials through interstate mail, and spent years in litigation.

Little is known about Allen's later life. His first commercial exhibition did not take place until 1979, seventeen years after his death. Allen died in Hayward, California, at the age of 75.******

About ANGELO DE SOUSA (from Wikipedia):

******Angelo Cesar Cardoso de Sousa, b.1938 d.2011, was a Portuguese painter, sculptor, draftsman and professor, known for continuously experimenting with new techniques in his works. He was seen as a scholar of light and color who explored minimalism in radical new ways.

Angelo de Sousa, along with Armando Alves, Jorge Pinheiro and José Rodrigues, became part of a group known as "Os Quatro Vintes" (The Four Twenties).

Angelo de Sousa had his first solo exhibition in 1959 and since then his works have been shown worldwide. In 1975 he received the International Prize of the 13th Sao Paulo Art Biennial and in 2007 the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation presented him with the Gulbenkian Prize.******

HOFFMANN VON FALLERSLEBEN AUF HELGOLAND. An ARTISTS' BOOK by ANSELM KIEFER.

This was Kiefer's third artists' book. It was published on the occasion of his exhibition in the Groningen Museum in an edition of 500 copies, instead of an exhibition catalog. The book shows the installation "Hoffmann von Fallersleben auf Helgoland" in 82 full-bleed b&w photographic illustrations.

Hardcover book, stiff card boards and cloth covered spine, black lettering embossed on the front cover, spine and back cover, 8.5x12 inches (21.5x30 cm), no dustjacket as issued.

VERY GOOD condition, the covers have a bit of corner tip wear and some rubbing to the spine ends, there is a small label of "Laura L. Carpenter" (aka Laura Carpenter Fine Art) on the upper corner of the front free endpaper, and an associated small label at the bottom spine corner of the rear cover, otherwise tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. A solid, very presentable copy.

ANSELM KIEFER, b.1945, is an important German-Austrian artist. His works are in the collection of many major museums in the U.S. and throughout the world. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York owns 20 of his watercolors. You can read about Anselm Kiefer and his works on his Wikipedia page.

An interesting side-note about Laura L. Carpenter/Laura Carpenter Fine Art, the previous owner of this book. Laura Carpenter was a fine arts gallery owner in Santa Fe who became very close friends with a wealthy woman. The wealthy woman poured over $1.5 into Laura's gallery. Things didn't go so well with the Gallery or the friendship. Bankruptcy and lawsuits followed. The curious can search Laura Carpenter Fine Art to read the ugly details.

This is a SCARCE poster, especially so with ARNO WERNER'S INSCRIPTION to LYNNE VEATCH (see Veatchs - Arts of the Book).

The broadside will be safely shipped in a sturdy mailing tube.

About ARNO WERNER (from his New York Times Obituary):

******Arno Werner, a German-born master bookbinder who was credited with keeping the craft alive in the United States, died on July 28, 1995, at his home in Hadlyme, Connecticut. He was 96.

His work, often executed in painstakingly hand-tooled morocco leather, was marked by a sturdy yet elegant simplicity. Until 1982 he was chief bookbinder for rare editions at the Houghton Library at Harvard University. His association with the library went back almost to its opening in 1942. In the catalog of Houghton Library's 1981 Retrospective of Werner's work, James E. Walsh, the keeper of printed books, wrote: "There is scarcely a shelf in the Houghton Library that does not contain one or more pieces of Arno's work."

Arno Werner was born in 1899, in Mylau, Saxony, one of 10 children of a weaver. He was apprenticed to a bookbinder at 13. He came to New York in 1925 with $25 and his tools in a cigar box.******

ASPEN MAGAZINE #8 is commonly referred to as the Fluxus Issue because of the involvement of George Maciunas and other artists who were part of the 1960s and 1970s Fluxus art movement.

CONDITION:

The folder is in only FAIR condition, it has toning, offsetting, creases from handling, and a dark spill to the bottom corner of the rear cover that affects the fold-open middle section of the inner recto page and, to a lesser extent, the bottom front corner of the front cover and its verso; nonetheless the folder is solid, with text that is fully legible, and is doing its job.

The 13 loose items in the folder are in VERY GOOD condition, just some toning and light signs of handling to a few items, overall they are bright, clean, clear and unmarked; lovely.

About LASZLO BALOGH (from Wikipedia):

******László Balogh, b.1930 d.2023, was a Hungarian painter from Szentendre. Since 1956, his works have been shown both in Hungary and abroad, and his paintings can be found in private and public collections in Hungary, Germany, the United States, Switzerland, France, Austria, Sweden, Finland and Spain.******

This is a JAPANESE ART MONOGRAPH on a POTTER / CERAMACIST. The monograph consists mainly of his GORGEOUS TEA CUPS, though there are some paintings and calligraphy as well. I do not read Japanese and can not figure out who the potter is, but perhaps you can do both. He seems to me to be a somewhat recent ceramicist making teacups in a traditional style. Softcover book, 8.5x10.5 inches. There are 80 COLOR PLATES of CERAMIC WORKS, either 1 or 2 to a page, plus 24 PLATES of CALLIGRAPHY and PAINTINGS, mostly 1 to a page. There are also some pages of text at both the front and rear of the book, text entirely in Japanese. VERY GOOD condition, a bit of shelf rubbing and signs of light handling, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A very nice copy. I tried to provide enough photos to give you a good idea of the book.

SCARCE, this limited edition of only 1000 copies quickly went out-of-print. It has become very hard-to-find.
