SIGNED & INSCRIBED by Photographer MIKIO MATSUO in blue pen on the first page of his section. His photographic works are in SFMOMA's permanent collection.

The third book published by Hysteric Glamour, Tokyo, Japan, 1992. Edited by Nobuhiko Kitamura. First edition, first printing. Large format softcover, photo illustrated glossy wrappers, 14.25" x 12.25", 120 unnumbered pages, beautifully illustrated with photographic works by each artist in b&w. It features the work of 12 photographers: Osamu Wataya, Taishi Hirokawa, Eiichi Kashimura, Mikio Matsuo, Yasuo Matsumoto, Nicolas Tucker, Ikko Narahara, Kouhei Ohnishi, Seiichi Furuya, Kimie Hata, Hiroshi Yoda, and Kiyoshi Tatsukawa. Text in Japanese with some English. VERY GOOD CONDITION: covers have shelfwear, a few scratches, scrapes, and creases, internally light age-toning to the margins, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. An excellent example of this groundbreaking Japanese Harajuku brand foray into art publishing.

In 1991, Nobuhiko Kitamura published his first photograph collection through his fashion brand Hysteric Glamour. Kitamura produced a "series of books with people who firmly believe they have the energy to elevate the feeling of HYSTERIC." Following similar pioneering works that blur the line between fashion and art such as Comme des Garçons SIX magazine. Hysteric Glamour"s early photography books laid the groundwork for the collaborative culture that came to define Harajuku in the 1990s.

Published by the Union of Artists of the USSR / Bowles Sorokko Galleries, Moscow / San Francisco, Printed in Torino, Italy by Stamperia Artistica Nazionale, 1989. First edition. Edited by Serge Sorokko. This was the first exhibition in the USSR of an artist exiled from the Soviet Union and banned by the authorities. Large format softcover, illustrated wrappers with French folds, 12.25" x 10", 158 pages of illustrations, most of them in color of Chemiakin's paintings, pastels, bronze sculptures, drawings, watercolors and a portrait of the artist. Text in Russian and English. Additionally inscribed to Tammy by Dr. Jean Audigier (beneath her essay), art history professor at the University of San Francisco where Chemiakin received an honorary doctorate, and the front/rear endpapers and some other pages are also inscribed to Tammy by people who seem to have been involved with this exhibition. VERY GOOD CONDITION: light shelfwear and a touch of sunning but overall the covers remain bright and the spine uncreased, internally, a touch of age toning to the margins otherwise tight, bright, and clean. A respectable copy of this affectionally signed vintage exhibition catalogue by an important radical artist.

Mihail Mikhailovich Chemiakin (American, b. Russia 1943) painter, graphic artist, stage designer, sculptor, and publisher now residing in France. A victim of persistent political persecution, he was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1971, resettled in France and later in New York in 1981. In 1989 Mikhail Gorbachev invited him back to Russia for a retrospective exhibition ending seventy years of isolation behind the Iron Curtain. Chemiakin is one of the most important and controversial figures in contemporary Russian art. A visionary Soviet dissident avant-garde artist who was expelled from art school for failing to conform to Socialist Realist norms, imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital along with other ideological dissidents, then persecuted and ordered into exile by the Soviet KGB. He is a leading non-conformist and surrealist, a radical painter best known for his mystical, supernatural, exotic, grotesque, fanciful, brilliantly colored compositions and iconography.

TWO BOUND BOOKS containing Issues from the FLORIST AND HORTICULTURE JOURNAL VOLUMES I, II and III. With numerous HAND-COLORED PLATES.

Two Hardcover Books, leather spines and corners with marbled paper covered boards, spines titled in gilt, marbled page edges, marbled endpapers, 6.5x9.5 inches (16x23.5 cm). Pagination by issue. The spines of the two books are titled Volume I and Volume III, though Volume I actually contains issues from Volume I and II, and neither of the Volumes contain a complete run of the year's issues. It appears that the books were bound with the previous owner's favorite issues.

    PHILADELPHIA: Crissy & Markley, Printers, 1852, 1853 and 1854.

The gorgeous plates are what make these works rare and wonderful. As the Publisher writes on the last page of Volume III: "Our Plates are unsurpassed. There is not a work of the kind published in London whose plates are more beautifully executed, certainly not in this country. There are in the Volume just furnished [Volume III], COUNTING EACH DOUBLE PLATE AS TWO, THIRTEEN PLATES, all colored, and of most beautiful subjects. The paper on which the Florist is printed is much superior to that generally for magazines: it is made for us at one of the best mills in the country..."

PLATES INCLUDED IN THE TWO VOLUMES:

VOLUME I (containing issues from Volume I and Volume II) has TWELVE HAND COLORED PLATES (10 single page plates, and 1 double page plate which the Publisher counts as 2).

VOLUME III: Contains TEN HAND COLORED PLATES (of the THIRTEEN called for), (4 single page plates, and 3 double page plates which the Publisher counts as 6)

    The ISSUES in the book titled VOLUME I (containing issues from V.I and V.II), published in 1852 and 1853, are: V.I N.2 TWO PLATES + pgs 33-64; V.1 N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.I N.6 pgs 127-192; V.II N.3 ONE PLATE + pgs 65-96; V.II N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.II N.6 ONE PLATE + pgs 161-192; V.II N.7 ONE PLATE + pgs 193-224; V.II N.8 pgs 218-256 (Publisher's incorrect pagination); V.II N.9 ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 257-288; V.II N.10 ONE PLATE + pgs 289-320; V.II N.11 pgs 321-352; and V.II N.12 TWO PLATES + pgs 354-388. The title page for the hardbound Volume II and the Index are bound in at the rear, pages numbered 389-392.

The hardbound VOLUME III has its overall title page, stating Publisher and the date 1854, but the title pages of the bound-in issues do not show their individual issue numbers or months of publication as did the issues of Volume I and II. The pagination of the issues in Volume III Is: iv; ONE PLATE + pgs 33-64; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 97-128; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 97-128; pgs 193-224; ONE PLATE + pgs 225-256; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 257-288; ONE PLATE + pgs 289-320; and ONE PLATE + pgs 354-380.

All the plates are protected with their original tissue guards.

CONDITION: The covers have scrapes and rubs at the edges, folds and spine ends, but are sturdy, attractive and doing their job well; there is a small previous owner's stamp at the top of a blank prelim of each volume "Pear Hill / J.W."; the early pages and plates of Volume I are age toned; otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked, and the plates are BRILLIANT.

RARE, EARLY AMERICAN FLORIST & HORTICULTURE BOOKS with GORGEOUS HAND-COLORED PLATES.

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: These two books will require additional shipping charges. After placing your order you will be notified of the charges and be able to accept or reject them before payment is taken. Thanks!

About The Great Morgani (from Wikipedia): ******The Great Morgani (aka Frank Lima) is an American street performer and performance artist from Santa Cruz, California. Although he is an experienced accordionist with 60 years of experience, he is most noted for his spectacular costumes. Frank Lima was born in 1942 in Los Banos, California. His family moved to Santa Cruz in 1946. Lima started performing at age 11, mostly in trios at Portuguese events. He enjoyed success in his first career as a stockbroker, but retired when he was 35. Almost two decades later in 1995, he embarked on a second career playing accordion as a street performer. In the first few years of his street performing, he performed with his face uncovered. Gradually, he developed more elaborate costumes, relying on the sewing skills he learned from his mother, a master seamstress. Although he performs barefaced privately, he performs in public with face covered, often by the material used in the rest of his costume. He has collected 42 accordions and assembled more than 130 costumes. In February 2014 Lima announced his retirement from street performing in downtown Santa Cruz due to city ordinances that regulate artists.******

THREE LARGE FOLIO PLATES based on Original 17th or early 18th Century Engravings. These Reprints were probably printed in the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

The engravings measure 15x21.5 inches, including margins.

They all appear disbound from the same, large folio book, but I do not know which book. My guess would be a German edition. All the plates appear to have been printed in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, and most appear to be facsimiles of engravings from the 1600s and 1700s.

The plates have stamped information just below the images: "Ch. Milsan Sculp." and "Aubriet del Paris 1763", but I believe that information is incorrect.

FINE condition, tight, bright, clean and unmarked; looks and feels unused.

From the English language introductory Message:

******The present exhibition places on display a selection of outstanding ukiyoe paintings and woodblock prints, including Hiroshige paintings never before shown publicly, from the collection of Aoki Tosaku (1870-1946), a businessman from Tochigi prefecture.

For many years (the collection) remained inaccessible to the general public, but in 1997 it attracted nationwide attention overnight when it was donated to the town of Bato in Tochigi prefecture by Aoki Tosaku's son. The town is at present proceeding with construction of an art museum to house the collection, but we have been given special permission to exhibit a part of the collection before the official opening.

The forty-odd paintings by Hiroshige that are the collection's major attraction constitute the largest such group in the world. The exhibition brings together some two hundred carefully selected items from the Aoki Collection, including, in addition to these Hiroshige paintings, woodblock prints by Kunisada, Kuniyochi, Kobayashi Kiyochika, Innoue Yasuji; and oils by Kawamura Kiyoo.******

Typographic design was by El Lisickij. The contributions were mostly in Russian, with a few in French and English.

VERY GOOD condition, the slipcase has some light sunning, still solid and doing its job well; the internal 3 books are in near fine condition, look and feel unused, a very presentable copy.

The publisher, lars-muller-publishers, is selling copies of this item for 850 Swiss Francs - $975 at the current exchange rate. Say what?!

    About VESC/OBJET/GEGENSTAND (from the Publisher):

******Although it lasted for only two issues (double issue 1&2 and issue 3) and was written mostly in Russian, the Russian Emigrant magazine "Vesc" exercised an enormous influence on other periodicals of that time. Today, the avant-garde art journal is considered a modernist landmark. Now, for the first time, the extraordinary contents of this short-lived magazine are made accessible in annotated translations and summaries.

This portfolio slipcase includes reprints of the original two issues of "Vesc Objet Gegenstand" from March/April and May 1922, edited by El Lissitzky and Ilja Ehrenburg with contents designed by El Lissitzky. A third volume features commentary and translations in both German and English.******

    About ILYA EHRENBURG (from Wikipedia):

******Ilya Ehrenburg, b.1891 d.1967, was a Russian journalist, revolutionary, writer, and historian. With around one hundred published titles, he is one of the most prolific and notable authors of the Soviet Union. In the 1920s, Ehrenburg moved to Paris and later Berlin, where he published the magazine Vesc/Objet/Gegenstand together with El Lissitzky.******

    About EL LISSITZKY (from Wikipedia):

El Lissitzky, b.1890 d.1941, was a Russian architect and painter, who from 1919/20 onwards was involved with Suprematism. Between 1919 and 1927 he produced a large body of paintings, prints, and drawings that he referred to by the word Proun, an acronym for "project for the affirmation of the new" in Russian. The term Proun was conceived by Lissitzky in 1919 specifically to signify his turn to non-objective art. Lissitzky's versatile body of work includes poster and theater set design, typography, and architecture.******
