Though limitation is not stated it is known that these were all printed in limited numbers. SIX of the calendars are SIGNED by RAMSESS on the front cover, some somewhat obscurely with pen, some boldly with black marker; most are also DATED. The eleven calendars are for the years: 2002 (signed and dated 2001 at the bottom, above the printed name of Lester Young); 2003 (signed and dated 2002 at the bottom, just above the printed date of 2003); 2004 (signed and dated 2003 at the bottom white area); 2005 (signed and dated 2004 in the bottom area of the blue jacket image); 2007 Two Copies (ONE copy is signed along the white side margin); 2008 Two Copies (ONE copy is signed along the at the bottom); 2009, 2010, 2012. (The dated copies are each dated in the year prior to the year of the calendar because calendars are always printed well before the year they are marking.) Kisasi Ramsess, known as RAMSESS, was part of the revival, and has become part of the heart and soul, of the Leimert Park area of Los Angeles. Leimert Park has, over the years, become the L.A. center of both historical and contemporary African-American art, music, and culture. From the Estate of Albert Birdsong and Barbara Ruth Richardson Birdsong, of Benicia, California. Barbara Birdsong outlived her husband and died in 2018. She was originally from Shreveport, Louisiana. The Birdsongs had an interesting gathering of African American literature and ephemera. The exhibition features a group of new works that are three dimensional pieces, with some on wheels. Often his works have narrative aspects, and moving parts, and seem light hearted in tone. Upon closer looking, however, darker and deeper themes may emerge. Prince seems to ponder metaphysics and the what-makes-things-tick aspect of life on our planet. Richard E. Prince was born in British Columbia and has exhibited across the country since his first solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1972."

From the Colophon Page: "This book of lithographs by Roger Shimomura is a co-publication project of the Steinbaum Krauss Gallery, New York City and The Lawrence Lithography Workshop, Sundland Park, New Mexico. The images are derived from a series of paintings about the artist's experience as a child in Minidoka Concentration Camp in Hunt, Idaho, during World War II. Condition: There is a bump to the bottom of the spine affecting the bottom blank spine corner of the inner pages, and a slight bump to the top of the spine only affecting that corner of a few preliminary pages. Otherwise bright, brilliant, and very scarce.

ASSOCIATION COPY: This set was previously owned by WINFIELD SCOTT WELLINGTON, b.1897 d.1979, with his bold and florid signature on the front pastedown of volumes 2-9. Wellington was a noted San Francisco Bay Area Architect, Museum Director, Artist, and Professor of Decorative Arts at UC Berkeley. He was also a noted collector of ceramics.

Each volume covers a different period in East-Asian Ceramic History:

    (1) Japan: Pre-Historic, Proto-Historic and Early Historic Periods. (2) Japan: Ceramics in the Nara to Muromachi Periods. (3) Japan: Ceramics in the Momoyama period. (4) Japan Ceramics in the Edo Period (part I).

    (5) Japan: Ceramics in the Edo period (part II). (6) The Edo period (part III). (7) Tea Ceremony Implements. (8) From Ancient China to Six Dynasties. (9) China: Sui and Tang Dynasties. (10) China: Sung and Liao Dynasties. (11) China: Yuan and Ming Dynasties. (12) China: Ch'ing Dynasty and Annamese and Thai Ceramics. (13) Korea: Pre-Koryo and Koryo Periods. (14) Korean Ceramics in the Li Dynasty.

Volumes 15 and 16 which ARE NOT part of this set, were the only volumes not related to East-Asian ceramics. Volume 15 is on the ceramics of "Europe & Others" and. Volume 16 is on Contemporary Ceramics (mainly non-Asian). As a collector of indigenous East-Asian ceramics perhaps this is why Professor Winfield Scott Wellington was not interested in those last two works.

CONDITION: Volume 1 is in GOOD condition: The back cover of has the ghost of a large sticker that was removed, the front and rear covers have some small stains, and there is a bump to the top of the spine; internally, there is some waviness to the bottom margin of the first few pages, and there are small rust stains and light offsetting to the rear endpapers from the laid-in English language booklet, otherwise the book is tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

VOLUMES 2-14 are in VERY GOOD condition, just a bit of soiling to some of the covers; tissue guards have been removed from most of the frontispieces, else tight, bright, clear, clean and unmarked.

ALL THE PLATES (1800+ in the 14 volume set) are brilliant.

A couple of the laid-in booklets are wavy, and a couple have pulled from their staples but are complete.

Considered to be one of the most extensive published works on East-Asian ceramics.

TWO BOUND BOOKS containing Issues from the FLORIST AND HORTICULTURE JOURNAL VOLUMES I, II and III. With numerous HAND-COLORED PLATES.

Two Hardcover Books, leather spines and corners with marbled paper covered boards, spines titled in gilt, marbled page edges, marbled endpapers, 6.5x9.5 inches (16x23.5 cm). Pagination by issue. The spines of the two books are titled Volume I and Volume III, though Volume I actually contains issues from Volume I and II, and neither of the Volumes contain a complete run of the year's issues. It appears that the books were bound with the previous owner's favorite issues.

    PHILADELPHIA: Crissy & Markley, Printers, 1852, 1853 and 1854.

The gorgeous plates are what make these works rare and wonderful. As the Publisher writes on the last page of Volume III: "Our Plates are unsurpassed. There is not a work of the kind published in London whose plates are more beautifully executed, certainly not in this country. There are in the Volume just furnished [Volume III], COUNTING EACH DOUBLE PLATE AS TWO, THIRTEEN PLATES, all colored, and of most beautiful subjects. The paper on which the Florist is printed is much superior to that generally for magazines: it is made for us at one of the best mills in the country..."

PLATES INCLUDED IN THE TWO VOLUMES:

VOLUME I (containing issues from Volume I and Volume II) has TWELVE HAND COLORED PLATES (10 single page plates, and 1 double page plate which the Publisher counts as 2).

VOLUME III: Contains TEN HAND COLORED PLATES (of the THIRTEEN called for), (4 single page plates, and 3 double page plates which the Publisher counts as 6)

    The ISSUES in the book titled VOLUME I (containing issues from V.I and V.II), published in 1852 and 1853, are: V.I N.2 TWO PLATES + pgs 33-64; V.1 N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.I N.6 pgs 127-192; V.II N.3 ONE PLATE + pgs 65-96; V.II N.4 ONE PLATE + pgs 97-128; V.II N.6 ONE PLATE + pgs 161-192; V.II N.7 ONE PLATE + pgs 193-224; V.II N.8 pgs 218-256 (Publisher's incorrect pagination); V.II N.9 ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 257-288; V.II N.10 ONE PLATE + pgs 289-320; V.II N.11 pgs 321-352; and V.II N.12 TWO PLATES + pgs 354-388. The title page for the hardbound Volume II and the Index are bound in at the rear, pages numbered 389-392.

The hardbound VOLUME III has its overall title page, stating Publisher and the date 1854, but the title pages of the bound-in issues do not show their individual issue numbers or months of publication as did the issues of Volume I and II. The pagination of the issues in Volume III Is: iv; ONE PLATE + pgs 33-64; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 97-128; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 97-128; pgs 193-224; ONE PLATE + pgs 225-256; ONE DOUBLE PAGE PLATE (which the Publisher counts as TWO) + pgs 257-288; ONE PLATE + pgs 289-320; and ONE PLATE + pgs 354-380.

All the plates are protected with their original tissue guards.

CONDITION: The covers have scrapes and rubs at the edges, folds and spine ends, but are sturdy, attractive and doing their job well; there is a small previous owner's stamp at the top of a blank prelim of each volume "Pear Hill / J.W."; the early pages and plates of Volume I are age toned; otherwise the pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked, and the plates are BRILLIANT.

RARE, EARLY AMERICAN FLORIST & HORTICULTURE BOOKS with GORGEOUS HAND-COLORED PLATES.

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: These two books will require additional shipping charges. After placing your order you will be notified of the charges and be able to accept or reject them before payment is taken. Thanks!

  • THREE LARGE COLOR PLATES - NEGROS NOVOS, RIO-JANEIRO, CAPITAO DO MATTO THREE LARGE COLOR PLATES - NEGROS NOVOS, RIO-JANEIRO, CAPITAO DO MATTO

THREE LARGE FOLIO PLATES based on Original 17th or early 18th Century Engravings. These Reprints were probably printed in the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

The engravings measure 15x21.5 inches, including margins.

They all appear disbound from the same, large folio book, but I do not know which book. My guess would be a German edition. All the plates appear to have been printed in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, and most appear to be facsimiles of engravings from the 1600s and 1700s.

The plates have stamped information just below the images: "Ch. Milsan Sculp." and "Aubriet del Paris 1763", but I believe that information is incorrect.

Condition: The images all have soiling, some spotting,…

Nonetheless, a wonderful group of 3 large engraved plates, with scenes that are quite lovely. Would look great framed.
