About JUAN ROBERTO DIAGO (from several Internet sources):

******Juan Roberto Diago was born on February 23, 1971, in Havana, Cuba. Diago studied art at San Alejandro Academy. He is a recipient of various awards including: Juan Francisco Elso Third Exhibition of Contemporary Art at the National Museum in Havana, Cuba (1995), the Raúl Martínez National Award (1999), and the Amédée Maratier Award in Paris, France, given for the first time to a Latin American artist by the Kikoine French Foundation (1999). The artist resides in Arroyo Arenas, Havana, Cuba.

A leading member of the new Afro-Cuban cultural movement, visual artist Juan Roberto Diago (b. 1971) has produced a body of work that offers a revisionist history of the Cuban nation. His "history," a term that he frequently inserts in his works using the visual language of graffiti, is not the official narrative of a racially harmonious nation... but a nation built on pain, rape, greed, and the enslavement of millions of displaced Africans, a nation still grappling with the long-term effects of slavery and colonialism. To him, slavery is not the past, but a daily experience of racism and discrimination.

The moving and spiritual work of Roberto Diago draws on elements of his Afro-Cuban religion in treating race, religion and slavery. Blending the old and the new, the rustic and the refined, the primitive and the urbane, Diago reminds of both his roots and his reality.******

******Jess Collins, b.1923 d.2004, known today simply as Jess, was an American visual artist.

He met Robert Duncan in 1950 and began a relationship with the poet that lasted for 37 years until Duncan's death in 1988. The two men lived and worked for decades from their historic Victorian home in the Mission District, "a wonderland of an old house, filled to the roof with art".

Jess's art received international attention with solo exhibitions at the The Museum of Modern Art in New York (1974), the Galleria Odyssia in Rome (1975), the Wadsworth Atheneum[11] (1975), the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts (1977), the Berkeley Art Museum (1980), and The Arts Club of Chicago (1981).

In 2019, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art mounted the show "Mythos, Psyche, Eros: Jess and California", which paired paintings and collages: "that privileged the mystical, whimsical, and absurd" by "one of San Francisco's most enigmatic figures..."

Published by THE LETTER EDGED IN BLACK PRESS, 1968. Limited edition of only 2000.

Six illustrated paper portfolios in their original cardboard mailing boxes. The mailing boxes holding the portfolios measure 14x7.5 inches (35.5x19 cm). Each folded portfolio (containing the artworks) measures 11x7 inches (28x18 cm). The artwork multiples are of various sizes.

The six volumes include 72 of the 73 called for art multiples, each unique to this publication - including the two cassette recordings by La Monte Young and Terry Riley that were made for SMS in 1968 but never included with them, as well as art, recordings, and printed poetry made exclusively for SMS by artists including Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Yoko Ono, Oppenheim, Bruce Naumaan, John Cage, Diane Wakoski, Claes Oldenberg, Christo, Hollis Frampton, Dick Higgins, Arman, Artschwager, and many others, (lacking only the Lichtenstein Folded Hat in S.M.S. #4).

All six of these boxed sets also include their original mailing boxes, a list of the Artists, and a "Sequence Sheet". Volume #6 also includes a "LAST ISSUE" announcement card.

Also included is a 1981 Reinhold-Brown Gallery / New Museum of Contemporary Art catalog that fully describes the items in each of the six original box sets.

CONDITION: The six boxed sets of art multiples are generally in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. The NEON CONSTRUCTION item in SMS #6 is lacking a few of its metal rings and parts but is otherwise present and complete; the TORTURED TUBE assembly kit has all its parts including an original paint tube which has leaked in its plastic bag - however this is the case in every SMS #4 I have seen or have been able to reference. (If you are considering an SMS #4 that contains the TORTURED TUBE, please make certain the condition is described or check with the seller to get a description, it would be unusual if the tube has not leaked (after all it is a "tortured tube").

A nice, complete set (Volumes 1-6) of Shit Must Stop, lacking only 1 of the 73 items, but with the often missing Cassette Tapes by La Monte Young and Terry Riley, the Yoko Ono recording, the Artists Lists and Sequence Sheets, the mailing boxes, and the descriptive 1981 catalog.

Original 1981 Color Photograph. SIGNED and DATED in black the ink by the artist KEN BOTTO on the front mat and on the rear frame backing. Ektacolor print, 8" x 12", double matted in an 11" x 16" metal and glass frame, the photograph is loosely set into 4 photo corners. The photograph is in NEAR FINE Condition bright and clean, the inner signed mat has a shoreline stain in the lower left corner, not affecting the photograph (this can also be seen on the rear backing board), and both of Ken Botto's signatures are bold and bright. A scarce early photograph from his famous Barbie Series.

A darkly surreal image that evokes a nuanced sense of unease and satire with a touch of uninhibited dominatrix energy. An iconic image from an iconic series by a very unique photographer.

Photographer Ken Botto (American, 1937-2008) Bolinas based artist who received his BFA from California College of Arts and Crafts and his MFA from Claremont Graduate School. Botto's photographic work has been widely exhibited and is in the permanent collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

"Men of Leather," was the first American gay male manifesto of leather Identity, a defining four page essay on leather subculture followed by an archetypal collection of photographs from the 1950s and 1960s from six studios, Chuck Renslow's Kris Studio of Chicago, Avery Willard of New York, Bob Anthony of New York, Scott of London, David of Cleveland, and R. A. Enterprises. Guild Press was a pioneering homomasculine publisher of gay oriented physique magazines in the 1950s. In 1962 Guild won an important legal victory to distribute publications with gay erotic content.

Avery Willard (aka Bruce King) 1921-1999, provocative and groundbreaking New York City artist, photographer, experimental filmmaker, writer, publisher, leatherman, actor, pornographer, publisher, drag historian and gay rights activist. In 1967 he created the classic gay film "Leather Narcissus" starring New York leather icon Fernando, following the Stonewall uprising in Greenwich Village in 1968, under the pen name Bruce King, Willard published "Gay Scene" until 1992. A trailblazer of the queer art movement, Willard produced a lifetime of historically significant work that has remained widely unseen for decades.

ALVIN C. HOLLINGSWORTH attracted widespread critical acclaim with his groundbreaking exhibition THE PROPHET SERIES held at the Harbor Gallery in Long Island that travelled to the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1970. Harlem Renaissance Artist and Civil Rights Advocate Romare Bearden lauded the exhibition in the October 1970 issue of the New York Amsterdam News. And in a 1971 Ebony magazine interviewed Hollingsworth who provocatively stated, "I have always felt that Christ was a Black man . a symbol of any of the modern prophets who have been trying to show us the right way. ALVIN C. HOLLINGSWORTH (1928-2000) Leading African American Artist, trail blazing Black comic artist, painter, illustrator, abstract expressionist, best known for his paintings relating to civil rights issues, the experience of Blacks within the urban landscape, Black women's rights, jazz, spirituality, and dance. Founding member with Romare Bearden of the Spiral Group of African American artists who linked their creative expression to social justice, other prominent members included Charles Alston, Emma Amos, Earl Miller, Norman Lewis, Hale Woodruff, Richard Mayhew, and Reginald Gammon. As early as 1945 he was illustrating comic books for various publishers including Cat Man Comics, which were issued under his name and pseudonyms, by the early 1950's he successfully created his own nationally syndicated comic.

THE CHRISTMAS THINGY - ORIGINAL ART by ALAN CLARK, SIGNED & FRAMED.

Alan M. Clark was the Illustrator for the children's book THE CHRISTMAS THINGY by F. Paul Wilson. This is an ORIGINAL ARTWORK by Alan Clark. It pictures the THINGY holding a bunch of Christmas presents. The artwork is signed with Clark's typical monogram signature "AC" at the bottom left corner.

The image measures 4.5 square inches, the frame 11.25 square inches.

Both the frame and art are in FINE condition.

This auction is for the framed piece of Original Art by Alan Clark based on his illustrations for the children's book The Christmas Thingy. It does not include the book.

Alan M. Clark is an American artist and book illustrator. He has won many awards for his illustrations.

Four interesting pieces of California art ephemera:

(1) ART FOR WILSON RILES CAMPAIGN. Flyer announcing an auction in support of Wilson Riles' campaign for California State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Contributing artists included Robert Arneson, Roy De Forest, Ralph Goings, Tom Holland, Manuel Neri, Joseph Faffael, Mel Ramos, Wayne Thiebaud, Peter Voulkous, and William Wiley, among many others. Single sheet mailer, 8.5x11 inches. GOOD condition, toned on the blank backside, folds from being folded and mailed, stamp and address on the backside, folds a bit tender. In November 1970 Riles' upset win over incumbent Max Rafferty was described as "one of the most stunning upsets in California's political history". Riles became the first African American to be elected to statewide office in California.

(2) NORMA G. LEISTIKO DANCER'S WORKSHOP announcement. Card stock, 6.5x9.5 inches, image on the front, info on the back. GOOD MINUS condition, two stiff folds, toning on the backside, very cool photographic image.

(3) SUSAN HALL - Point Reyes Artist - 1969 Exhibition at the QUAY GALLERY, San Francisco. Fold-open, mailed announcement. Paper, 11.25x11.25 inches. One of her first solo exhibitions. Only FAIR condition, toning, foxing, folds, some folds have small tears. Still a scarce announcement, one of the artist's earliest exhibitions.

(4) U.C. DEPT. OF ART ATHLETIC SQUAD. Square 4.5 inch fold open card, only the front panel is printed, the other panels are blank. A group of what seems to be U.C. Berkeley Art Students and Professors who, presumably, also enjoyed sports. Some went on to have professional art related careers, others not. The people are all named, they include Raymond Saunders, Carl Worth, Richard Schuetz, Boyd Allen, Russell Gordon, Stanley Osher (a noted mathematician, perhaps brought into the club for his athletic abilities?!). GOOD condition, light toning, some pin holes to the top edge.

The items are all from the collection of Marvin Lipofsky, b.1938 d.2016, an American glass artist. He was a central figure in the dissemination of the American Studio Glass Movement, introducing it to California through his tenure as an instructor at the University of California, Berkeley and the California College of Arts and Crafts.

Chinese American Artist John Way was a pioneer of mid twentieth century Chinese Abstraction. This is a scarce exhibition catalogue from early in Way's career where he found the essence of his style at the crossroads of east and west. There are no examples of this publication in OCLC collections worldwide.

Published by Joan Peterson Gallery, Boston to accompany Way's solo exhibition. Printed by The Juvenile Press, Taipei, Taiwan, 1967. First and only printing. Softcover, Chinese stab binding, bound with white silk string, 10.25" x 6", 9 folded leaves of thin paper printed on one side only, front cover is an original lithograph on textured Chinese calligraphy paper. Text includes artist statement, previous exhibitions, and reproduced reviews from various publications. Only the cover is illustrated. GOOD CONDITION: complete as issued. There is a shoreline stain in the upper corner affecting all the pages except the front cover, and light edge and corner wear, otherwise bright, clean and unmarked. Scarce.

John Way [Wei Letang] (Chinese/American, 1921-2012) Born in Shanghai, Wei started his artistic studies under the great calligrapher Li Jian (1881-1956). He immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 and studied architecture at M.I.T., he worked in the Boston area until moving to San Francisco in the 1990s. Inspired by both traditional Chinese calligraphy and Abstract Expressionist painting, his work evokes the large gestural work of Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. His artworks are widely exhibited, including a solo exhibition at the Shanghai Art Museum.

The Joan Peterson Gallery was an art gallery in Boston. Peterson was one of the most prominent art dealers in Boston from the late 1950s into the early 1980s. Her gallery showed the work of leading regional modernists. It closed in 1981.

LE FROU-FROU. Paris Journal of Humor and Light Eroticism. 25 issues, #80-150, Avril 1902 through Octobre 1902, including their "Contes Inedits" inserts, all bound together in a contemporary, embossed Simplex Binder. Includes the rare title page to this collection with its embossed gilt Frou-Frou illustration, the statement "1902 2e Semestre" (the second half of 1902), and the price of "6 francs".

Text in French, the humorous and risqué drawings speak for themselves in all languages.

GOOD Condition: The binder has some rubs, scrapes to the folds, and a couple white marks, but is solid and attractive; internally, the issues and pages are toned as normal, otherwise bright, clean and unmarked.

A nice set, includes drawings unique to this publication by some noted French artists of the day.

******LE FROU-FROU was a French magazine published from 1900 until the beginning of WWI. It was known for its humorous and risqué content, including illustrations of can-can dancers, cartoons, and humorous anecdotes of Parisian life.******

Photolithographs, each is 18" x 24". Published by Classic Images, Distributed by Pacific Images, Glendale, California, 1989. Each hand signed in black pen by Bob Seidemann. VERY GOOD CONDITION. Three scarce signed posters, I could not find any in commerce or auction records.

Photographer Bob Seidemann (1941-2017) is famous for his Hippie era rock posters. He was one of the most recognized rock 'n' roll photographers of the 1960s, he photographed Janis Joplin wearing only beads, he photographed album covers for the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, and the infamous Blind Faith album cover. Raised near LaGuardia Airport he developed an early fascination with aircraft that inspired his acclaimed aviation project which began in the 1980s. In 2007 the original Airplanes As Art photography portfolio sold at auction for $216,000 at Sotheby's.

The three posters will be shipped together, safely rolled in a sturdy mailing tube.

BOB SEIDEMANN'S "BLIND FAITH" PHOTOGRAPH, ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE 20TH CENTURY; it was used for the U.K. "Blind Faith" album cover and its title became the name of the band.

TITLED, SIGNED, NUMBERED and DATED by the PHOTOGRAPHER, BOB SEIDEMANN, this being copy #10 of 75, dated 1969 but printed later.

A chromogenic reprint photograph, mounted and framed. Professionally "clip" mounted so that the photograph can safely be removed from the frame if so desired. Image measures 11.25x11 inches on a 14x12 inch photographic sheet.

Signed limited reprint photographs of "Blind Faith" are in major museums in Europe and America, and have shown up at auction from time to time. From what I can find, one sold at Sotheby's in 2014, a Rock 'n Roll History auction, for $17,000; one sold at Heritage Auctions in 2022 for $4,000, and one did not meet its reserve price at Bonhams.

The photograph is in FINE condition, bright, brilliant colors, great. The metal frame has some light scratches.

This controversial but iconic photograph represents an era when Rock 'n Roll was king, and was photographed by the king of rock n' roll photography, Bob Seidemann.

About Bob Seidemann and his photograph Blind Faith (from Sotheby's auction and Wikipedia):

******Robert "Bob" Emett Seidemann, b.1941 d.2017, was an American photographer. He was known for his portraits of musicians and bands from San Francisco's counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s. Many of his images were published by Rolling Stone, by record labels, and in books.

Bob Seidemann's surreal and enigmatic 'Blind Faith' became the album cover of Eric Clapton's first post Cream project. The band consisted of Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech, and took both its name and the title of its only album from Seidemann's photograph. The image, of a young girl holding a futuristic metal plane, created controversy even before its release when Polydor balked at using it as cover art. Clapton insisted, however, and the 1969 UK release of Blind Faith featured Seidemann's photograph. The photograph went on to become his most famous and controversial work. SIXTEEN ORIGINAL FASHION DESIGNER WATERCOLOR and PEN & INK ILLUSTRATIONS,

The illustrations are in Watercolor and Pen & Ink, folio size, 11.75 x 16.5 inches. They are dated 1987 - 1990. Each is SIGNED and dated by SIMON FOSTER. (I cannot determine who this Simon Foster is, though likely a London fashion designer.)

Included are design illustrations for FERRAGAMO SHOES, textile fashion illustrations for WHISTLES and BAZAAR , and a lovely watercolor illustration for LANGAN'S of LONDON (the iconic Brasserie & Members Club) which portrays his designs for formal Waiting Staff Uniforms.

Most of the textile illustrations have fabric samples pinned on them, the shoe illustrations have leather samples glued on them. I love the Ferragamo Shoes leather samples.

The illustrations are in VERY GOOD condition, there is a small tear, tape repair, and some signs of handling, here and there, overall bright and attractive.
