    (2) NORMA G. LEISTIKO DANCER'S WORKSHOP announcement. Card stock, 6.5x9.5 inches, image on the front, info on the back. GOOD MINUS condition, two stiff folds, toning on the backside, very cool photographic image.

    (3) SUSAN HALL - Point Reyes Artist - 1969 Exhibition at the QUAY GALLERY, San Francisco. Fold-open, mailed announcement. Paper, 11.25x11.25 inches. One of her first solo exhibitions. Only FAIR condition, toning, foxing, folds, some folds have small tears. Still a scarce announcement, one of the artist's earliest exhibitions.

    (4) U.C. DEPT. OF ART ATHLETIC SQUAD. Square 4.5 inch fold open card, only the front panel is printed, the other panels are blank. A group of what seems to be U.C. Berkeley Art Students and Professors who, presumably, also enjoyed sports. Some went on to have professional art related careers, others not. The people are all named, they include Raymond Saunders, Carl Worth, Richard Schuetz, Boyd Allen, Russell Gordon, Stanley Osher (a noted mathematician, perhaps brought into the club for his athletic abilities?!). GOOD condition, light toning, some pin holes to the top edge.

The items are all from the collection of Marvin Lipofsky, b.1938 d.2016, an American glass artist. He was a central figure in the dissemination of the American Studio Glass Movement, introducing it to California through his tenure as an instructor at the University of California, Berkeley and the California College of Arts and Crafts.

1 limited signed print 28/100, inscribed to Marvin Lipofsky in English but the signature is again too difficult to figure; 1 Pour Feliciter 1987 card signed.

All the items are in generally GOOD condition, folds from mailing, signs of handling, overall solid and bright.

About Czech PF Pour Feliciter greetings (from a knowledgeable Bohemian on the Internet):

******The Czech letters P-F ,"pé-efka", do not stand for Czech words but actually two French words "pour féliciter", which means to congratulate. It is a way of wishing luck in the New Year. In the Czech Republic PF greeting cards are often sent out a month before Christmas as part of a joint holiday (Christmas and New Year) greeting. The PF greeting is almost exclusively Czech; not even the French use it. The origin of this phrase in the Czech language is actually a total mystery and often disputed. One theory says that it was first used centuries ago when Czech noblemen spoke French as part of their "higher education". While French did not survive, the greeting did. One really big problem is that if Czechs use this greeting internationally, especially for business, nobody has a clue what it means.******

    About MARVIN LIPOFSKY (from Wikipedia):

He was a central figure in the dissemination of the American Studio Glass Movement, introducing it to California through his tenure as an instructor at the University of California, Berkeley and the California College of Arts and Crafts. Lipofsky was one of the first American glass artists to travel to Czechoslovakia [now the Czech Republic], where a studio glass movement had arisen in the 1950s. This would be the first of many trips. He became well known and collaborated with numerous artists. Lipofsky's work has been collected by many public museums and institutions worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.******

"I am searching / for an art form / which shows / the feeling of / powerfulness and subtlety, / the infusion of controlled /and uncontrolled images, / and / the sensations of / order and disorder, / perfection from imperfection." -- John Way 1967.

John Way [Wei Letang] (Chinese/American, 1921-2012) Born in Shanghai, Wei started his artistic studies under the great calligrapher Li Jian (1881-1956). He immigrated to the U.S. in 1956 and studied architecture at M.I.T., he worked in the Boston area until moving to San Francisco in the 1990s. His artworks are widely exhibited, including a solo exhibition at the Shanghai Art Museum.

The Joan Peterson Gallery was an art gallery in Boston. Peterson was one of the most prominent art dealers in Boston from the late 1950s into the early 1980s. Her gallery showed the work of leading regional modernists. It closed in 1981.

From what I can find, one sold at Sotheby's in 2014, a Rock 'n Roll History auction, for $17,000; one sold at Heritage Auctions in 2022 for $4,000, and one did not meet its reserve price at Bonhams.

The photograph is in FINE condition, bright, brilliant colors, great. The metal frame has some light scratches.

This controversial but iconic photograph represents an era when Rock 'n Roll was king, and was photographed by the king of rock n' roll photography, Bob Seidemann.

About Bob Seidemann and his photograph Blind Faith (from Sotheby's auction and Wikipedia):

******Robert "Bob" Emett Seidemann, b.1941 d.2017, was an American photographer. He was known for his portraits of musicians and bands from San Francisco's counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s. Many of his images were published by Rolling Stone, by record labels, and in books.

Bob Seidemann's surreal and enigmatic 'Blind Faith' became the album cover of Eric Clapton's first post Cream project. The band consisted of Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech, and took both its name and the title of its only album from Seidemann's photograph. The image, of a young girl holding a futuristic metal plane, created controversy even before its release when Polydor balked at using it as cover art. Clapton insisted, however, and the 1969 UK release of Blind Faith featured Seidemann's photograph. The photograph went on to become his most famous and controversial work. The rarity of the original cover has made the album highly collectible, and its notoriety has raised Seidemann's photograph to icon status.******

A Mexican post revolutionary modernist photobook that brilliantly reveals the struggles and triumphs of the 1937 anti fascist revolution in Mexico. Gutmann's photographic work promotes Mexico as a progressive nation and is itself a high point of working class mobilization and artistic collaboration that reveals the fundamental role artists had in constructing a new national identity. Artists and worker movements were mobilized and radicalized during the six year presidency of Lázaro Cárdenas (1934-1940). The solidarity of the Mexican working class catalyzed a democratic and socialist order out of which Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios, LEAR (League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists) an important artists collective arose in 1934. Gutmann promoted a socialist concept of Mexico, his photography provided a modernist discourse to promote the nation as modern. Featured in Horacio Fernandez, The Latin American Photobook. Despertar Lagunero is considered one of the finest Latin photobooks produced in the revolutionary spirit of the times. Gutmann, a German Jewish exile who came to Mexico in 1934 immediately joined LEAR. During the 1930s he was an influential journalist and editor with direct access to the president. Gutmann published photographs in the LEAR journal Frente a Frente (Face to Face), in various newspapers, as well as in Gustoavo Ortiz Hernan's novel Chimeneas (another standout photo book of the period).

Photographer Enrique (Heinrich) Gutmann (b. Lithuania 1906-1950 d. Mexico City) Jewish German exile, anti fascist activist, propagandist, journalist, editor, photographer and photo montage artist whose work conferred nationalism and promoted Mexico as progressive nation. Fleeing the Nazi regime in Germany, Gutmann emigrated to Mexico in 1934 a year after the book burnings and Reichstag fire in Germany. He emigrated with his wife of Mexican heritage, who had been compelled by the Reich Ministry to prove she was a pureblood German. His arrival in Mexico was marked by Lázaro Cárdenas's quest for a socialist democratic Mexico, a perfect refuge from European fascism and totalitarian regimes. Gutmann died in Mexico City at the age of 44 after being struck by a car.
