The relative isolation of the Three Gorges due to complexity of terrain and difficulty of communications ensured a comparative absence of major upheval and calamity during the historical period. As a result. the region enjoyed extended periods of stable development, and moreover, was blessed with unusually favorable conditions for the preservation of cultural relics. According to the surveys carried out coordinate with the Three Gorges Dam Project there are over eight hundred localities with cultural relics below ground that will be either submerged or otherwise affected by the reservoir. These remains buried below the surface consist mostly of sites and tombs spanning a range from the Palaeolithic to the Ming and Qing periods. The sites are highly diverse in nature and include examples of settlements belonging to agricultural and fishing communities, walled towns and regional centres of administration, industrial sites such as salt wells and kilns, ancestral temples and other centres of religious activity, staging posts and trade routes, and defensive structures and fortified passes at strategic locations. The tombs are no less varied in date and form..." INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This book will require additional shipping charges. This is a JAPANESE ART MONOGRAPH on a POTTER / CERAMACIST. The monograph consists mainly of his GORGEOUS TEA CUPS, though there are some paintings and calligraphy as well. I do not read Japanese and can not figure out who the potter is, but perhaps you can do both. He seems to me to be a somewhat recent ceramicist making teacups in a traditional style. Softcover book, 8.5x10.5 inches. There are 80 COLOR PLATES of CERAMIC WORKS, either 1 or 2 to a page, plus 24 PLATES of CALLIGRAPHY and PAINTINGS, mostly 1 to a page. There are also some pages of text at both the front and rear of the book, text entirely in Japanese. VERY GOOD condition, a…

About BAMBOO AND WOODEN SLIPS (from Wikipedia): ******Bamboo and Wooden Slips were the main media for documents in China before the widespread introduction of paper during the first two centuries AD. (Silk was occasionally used, but was prohibitively expensive.) The long, narrow strips of wood or bamboo typically carry a single column of brush written text each, with space for several tens of visually complex ancient Chinese characters. For longer texts, many slips may be bound together in sequence with thread. Each strip of wood or bamboo is said to be as long as a chopstick and as wide as two. The earliest surviving examples of wood or bamboo slips date from the 5th century BC during the Warring States period. However, references in earlier texts surviving on other media make it clear that some precursor of these Warring States period bamboo slips was in use as early as the late Shang period (from about 1250 BC). Bamboo or wooden strips were the standard writing material during the Han dynasty and excavated examples have been found in abundance. Subsequently, paper began to displace bamboo and wooden strips from mainstream uses, and by the 4th century AD bamboo had been largely abandoned as a medium for writing in China. The custom of interring books made of the durable bamboo strips in royal tombs has preserved many works in their original form through the centuries. An important early find was the Jizhong discovery in 279 AD of a tomb of a king of Wei, though the original recovered strips have since disappeared. Several caches of great importance have been found in recent years.******

VERY GOOD condition, tight, bright, clean, clear and unmarked. I found a Chinese description online, the following is a rough translation of it by Google: ******Hong Kong Yindu Agency Co., Ltd. was established in 1982. It was mainly formed by the merger of three old film companies, Great Wall Film Production Company, Phoenix Film Company and Xinlian Film Company (collectively known as Chang Feng Xin). The Southern Film Company, which is engaged in domestic film distribution, as well as the Qingshuiwan Film Studio and Yindu Entertainment, have made Yindu a film organization with a comprehensive film and television system for production, film, theater, distribution and advertising. It has been sixty years since the predecessor of Yindu, the Great Wall Film Production Company and the Southern Film Company (founded in 1950). In the past 60 years, the Yindu system has produced 480 movies and 11 TV series, and has released nearly a thousand domestic films. The mysterious history of light and shadow created by countless shining stars and filmmakers has become a common memory that fans of generations will never wear out. This book is the predecessor of Yindu (Great Wall, Phoenix, Xinlian, South, Qingshuiwan Studio) and even the 60 year history of Yindu, including the purpose of each company, the development of each stage, and the introduction and release of the company. The film, the editorial director's articles and interviews, as well as important film reviews, and finally ended in a large scale film The Master of the Generation (Director Wang Jiawei) to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Yindu. The book is divided into four chapters the ideal age, the rough years, the reconstruction days and the revival period. 11 experts and scholars from the Mainland and Hong Kong were invited to write an article to discuss the characteristics and positioning of Yindu and its predecessors. The authors include: Lefu, Huang Ailing, Shi Qi, Li Weitao, Lin Jinbo and Zheng Chuanqi. Mainland authors include: Zhao Weifang, Sha Dan, Zhang Yan, Li Xiang, Si Ruo. The book has a total of about 1,000 photos. The appendix includes a list of the film and television works of the Yindu system, a list of staff and an interview summary of the industry. "Material on Japanese communes was compiled from personal experience and interviews in the communes themselves with added material and insights from other writers and visitors, including Meyer Steinbach, M.D.; Noboyoshi Tezuka, Michael Howden, and staff of the Japan Kibbutz Association."

Japanese Communes in this book include: Itto-en Community; New Village; Ohoyamato Ajisai; Shinkyo Commune; Yamagishi-kai Association; Hokkaido Yamagishi-ism; The Tribe; and more. (I wonder if Haruki Murakami based the commune in his book 1Q84 on one of these?)

About the Ezo collection of Takaka Chuzaburo (roughly translated from the Japanese by Google):

******Ethnologist and Aomori native Tanaka Chuzaburo spent his life researching and documenting the culture of his home. This book features implements and clothing from the collection Tanaka spent his life amassing and introduced the culture and lifestyles developed by the people of Aomori to survive the region's long, harsh winters. In an age of rampant cheap and disposable consumption, this book provides an opportunity to trace the handicrafts and way of life of people who truly cared for their belongings through tireless maintenance and repurposing.******

    About EZO (from Wikipedia):

******Ezo is the Japanese term historically used to refer to the lands to the north of the Japanese island of Honshu. It included the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, which changed its name from Ezo to Hokkaido in 1869, and sometimes included Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.******
